Seeing is believing, thank you!
LibreOffice is affected too.

For strings it seems to work correctly when using
- a named range (Insert ⟶ Names ⟶ Define)
or
- a database range (Data ⟶ Define Range).

>
> Is that a bug?
>

I do think so.

Calc Help topic "Recognizing Names as Addressing" states:
"This function is active by default. To turn this function off,
choose Tools - Options - OpenOffice Calc - Calculate and
clear the Automatically find column and row labels check box."

You will find a similar statement in LibreOffice 7.4 Help [1],
but in LibreOffice 7.5 Help one reads [2]:

"Automatically finding labels is a legacy feature and deactivated by default
as it can produce nondeterministic behavior depending on actual document
content.
To turn this function on, choose Tools - Options - LibreOffice Calc - Calculate
and
mark the Automatically find column and row labels check box.

Using defined labels instead is always possible and behaves similar but in a
defined way."

It looks like the right path for AOO as well.
The user should be warned of the risks involved and
viable alternative(s) should be pointed out.

That's right.

Please give an example of a non-functioning intersection.
AFAICT it works as per specification
(in short: return the value from the cell on the same row or column as the
formula;
otherwise, return an Error).

>
> So why is the ForceArray attribute on the "DataSource" parameter instead of
> the "Lookup" parameter?
>
> Or is ForceArray supposed to do something else?

IMHO the ForceArray works as one could expect based on specification:

"(..) no implied intersection is performed, instead where a reference to a
single cell is expected and multiple cells are provided, iteration over the
multiple cells is performed and results are
stored in an array that is passed on."

For example the formula with MODE:

6.18.50 MODE
Syntax: MODE( { ForceArray NumberSequence N }+ )

MODE(ABS(A1:A4)) - in normal mode - forces ABS(A1:A4) to be evaluated as an
array formula.
ABS() returns an array of the absolute values of A1:A4 from which MODE() selects
the most common value to be returned.

The .ods file available at the link below
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1r0Q5Y1Di6blgirdbul4v-l3S3KEySh0U/view?usp=sharing

contains a few more examples of "ForceArray" in action,
including LOOKUP vs HLOOKUP / VLOOKUP.
(The second parameter of the LOOKUP function, unlike HLOOKUP and VLOOKUP,
is in ODF 1.2 declared as ForceArray).
Examples with HLOOKUP and VLOOKUP return the #VALUE! error in AOO,
but yield a value in LibreOffice releases that support ODF 1.3.

I hope you find this useful.

  Czesław

Wizard for Letter / Fax — unexpected security warning

2023-05-12 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi All,

Version 4.1.14 seems to have gone a bit too far in terms of security
measures.

Prerequisite: "Macro security" set to "Low".

1. Choose File ⟶ Wizards ⟶ Letter (or ⟶ Fax).
2. In the dialog press "Finish".

AOO creates a Writer document and displays a security warning about the
template.

ZIP archive with .gif recordings (Letter, Fax) is available at the

The OOo Help provides similar information.

It works exactly like described above. The version 1.1.5, unlike the newer
versions of the suite,
does not display the "Import" button. It allows you to reset the selected
icon to the default icon
via the "Default" button.
.
A change in the layout of the dialog probably happened in version 2.0
(I failed to find any version earlier than 2.2).

Czesław

Hi all,

While compiling the Bugzilla report about the "Change Icon" dialog, I
learned something that might shed light
on the issue Matthias raised. Nothing conclusive, of course, as I haven't
studied the source code of all versions in detail.

ZIP archive (a .pdf file and .gif file) is available at the link given

Re: Missing Tab function in OpenOffice BASIC

2022-08-08 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi Carl,

user-defined function "StarBasicTab"

Function StarBasicTab(x As Long) As String
   StarBasicTab = Tab(x)
End Function

Calc does not display HT (ASCII 09) in the cell.

Testing:
Cell A2: 1
Cell B2: =StarBasicTab(A2)
cell C2:=REPT(UNICHAR(9);A2)

cell D2: =(B2 = C2)

See the .ods file available at the link

Hope this helps

Hyperlink Warning Message for mp4 file

2022-08-01 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi,

The topic "Macro warning - sometimes" on the English forum, started
yesterday. [1]
An user annoyed by the fact that a hyperlink pointing to an mp4 file (as
opposed to an mp3 file)
raises a warning.

As you all remember, the list of safe extensions was one of the issues
discussed
in the "Hyperlink Warning Message" thread on dev@.

Shouldn't the mp4 extension be allowed?

Best regards,
Czesław

Thanks for the hint. You're right.
On Windows, the Hanya extension substitutes correctly environment variables
(user variables and system variables) displayed in the "Environment
Variables" dialog.

Hi Rory,

Thanks for the information. Just for the record - there is no dev builds
for Windows available at the moment
https://www.openoffice.org/download/devbuilds.html

I checked the Hanya example on Windows 7 & 11 with 4.1.12 and with two
builds by Matthias (4.1.13 and 4.2).
Attempting to install in 4.2 fails (the progress bar stands still in the
Extension Manager).
As to 4.1.12 and 4.1.13 - the "Environment variable" item doesn't work i.e.
nothing gets substituted.

Best regards
Czesław

Can it be changed, please?

Release Notes (pl) - missing letters in the exported .pdf file

2021-10-21 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi,

AOO 4.1.11 Release Notes - Polish version
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=191333544

The "Export to PDF" option produces the .pdf file but some Polish letters
with diacritics
are missing. Export in Word format is correct.

File with screenshots is available at the address:

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Accessing the comment object (annotation) in Draw/Impress via API

2021-10-11 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi,

Recently a user on the English forum inquired how one can change the font
size in a comment box in Draw [1].
He was given the obvious workaround tip and then the discussion started on
how to access the comment object via API.
Though the AOO's IDL reference says nothing in this regard, it turned out
the annotation can be handled
programmatically (at least in OpenOffice Basic).

Hence my questions:
1. Is the API in terms of annotations' handling fully operational?
2. Should the relevant AOO's IDL reference be amended?

Re: AOO41X: Time for RC1?

2021-09-20 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi all,

Something odd (but unimportant) observed in 4.1.11 en-US
(Windows 7, 64-bit).

In Help for Calc I chose the "SUM function" in the Index tab page.
In the Help topic "Mathematical Functions" scrolled the view up to the
description of the SIN function
and noticed sort of a page break.

It happens neither in 4.1.10 nor in 4.2

See please the file with screenshots available at:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1h5XrPZQZs7B7_5Tkn2_H0_VscalrD_rd/view?usp=sharing

Can someone confirm this?

the "Extensions and Templates" webpage - minor enhancements

2021-08-27 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi all,

the "Extensions and Templates" webpage:

https://www.openoffice.org/extensions/index.html

The image "EXTENSIONS" somewhat overwhelms and there is no adequate image
for "TEMPLATES".
Font size for the link "Find out much more on the Extensions Area Wiki"
could be a little smaller.

My draft proposal can be viewed / downloaded at the following link:

.uno:Reload button - a glitch

2021-06-14 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi all,

While doing tests of the 4.1.11 version (on Windows 7 64-bit) I observed an
interesting glitch - kind of misplaced focus rectangle.
It occurs also in versions: 4.1.9 and 4.1.10.

The full description is given in Bugzilla Issue 128460.
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=128460

I would like to take this opportunity to express my particular thanks to
Carl Marcum and Pedro Lino for their insights.

Hi Matthias, all

A preliminary check in Calc (Windows 7, 64-bit)

(1) in-document links beginning with #
test: button with link to other sheet
result: OK (no security warning)

(2) .uno:XXX links
result: security warning

(3) Links to local files
test: the "Hyperlink" dialog, button "WWW Browser"
result: OK (no security warning)

[DISCUSS] 4.1.10 Security Warning (resolved fixed BZ Issue 128451)

2021-05-04 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi all,

In today's post on English forum: "Hyperlink Warning Message" [1]
a _question_ was asked about the possibility of turning off the security
message
"This hyperlink is going to open (...) Do you want to proceed?"

This is the kind of _question_ one would expect from users.

So I have a few questions:

- is / will ever be there a way to switch off this message? (at one's own
risk...)
- is there a need to amend the 4.1.10 Release Notes?
(maybe additional information e.g. in the "Security" section)
- should contextual Help topic "Security Warning" be amended?
  (it deals with macro security)

AOO 4.1.10 Release Notes - what about "feedback"?

2021-04-24 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi,

Release Notes 4.0 [*]
section "General Remarks", the 5th paragraph:

--
As always we welcome your feedback:

- Support questions are best directed to our community support forums.
- Bug reports (but not support questions) should go to to our Bugzilla
issue tracking system.
- General questions can also be sent to our public users mailing list.

I know that hardly anyone reads the Release Notes and the issue is trivial,
but I musk ask:

Does anyone know / remember why the said paragraph vanished?
As of version 4.1, cf. the juxtaposition:

Re: If the variable $(username) exists in OpenOffice?

2021-03-25 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi Jörg, Dennis

> file:///%APPDATA%/../../

It does not work. AOO in 'Tools - Options - OpenOffice - Paths' shows
nothing for "My Documents".
(the same in case of LibreOffice).

Regarding "$(username)" - the source file "substitutepathvars.cxx"

AOO, Lines 107 - 128
http://openoffice-vm1-he-de.apache.org/xref/aoo419/main/framework/source/services/substitutepathvars.cxx?r=910823ae

LO, Lines 87 - 109
https://opengrok.libreoffice.org/xref/core/framework/source/services/substitutepathvars.cxx?r=b4ec5a94

AOO does not define "$(username)" - but that might prove nothing.

No need to be sorry whatsoever. I am utterly happy with your decision.
My command of German language feels the same way. ;‑)

May / should I delete the "ENTWURF - AOO 4.1.9 Release Notes (de)" page?

Re: [CONF] Apache OpenOffice Community > AOO 4.1.9 Release Notes (de)

2021-02-27 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi Marcus,

Your 2 notes will be taken with the utmost seriousness.
And perhaps one could take care of an adequate translation of the passage
below (excerpt from "For macOS users"):

"Apache OpenOffice 4.1.9 may be flagged by the Gatekeeper facility in macOS
X. This is a feature to help guard against malware on Mac systems. The
Apache OpenOffice disk images are signed by Apache as required by Apple,
but Gatekeeper may still be triggered. If that happens, please follow the
below steps."

On the other hand: Did someone notice the difference?

download page (and Release Notes): Rev. 56108130a
the About box (menu "Help - About OpenOffice"): Rev. 561082130a

Best regards,
Czesław

And for the word "funky". I was looking for something "eye-catching" to be

Websites: Invalid link (Bugzilla), abundance of elements (Help Authoring)

2021-02-19 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi,

1. Bugzilla, home page
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/

Link provided in the last item of "NOTES" section: "(...) DO read the bug
submission guidelines at

http://issues.apache.org/bugwritinghelp.html

is faulty ("404 Not Found").

2. AOO Understanding and Authoring OpenOffice 2.0 Online Help

https://www.openoffice.org/documentation/online_help/helpauthoring/HelpAuthoring.html

Some elements (banner, announcement, navigation bar etc.) are repeated in
the two adjacent frames.

Hi Pedro,

4.1.9 RC1, Windows 7
English spelling extension:
I can confirm your observation - checking for update of any version
(2020.07.01 - 2020.12.01)
results in a message "No new updates are available.".

+1 for volunteer@

BTW:
Mailing Lists page - section "Recruitment Mailing List (Public)",

There is a typo: "contributer". Any volunteers? ;‑)

Download and Home pages - where is the focus indicator?

2021-01-10 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi all,

When navigating the download page http://www.openoffice.org/download
with the Tab / Shift-Tab key, the focus indicator (outline) is not present.
The same happens on the home page http://www.openoffice.org/

On other AOO pages e.g. "Product" http://www.openoffice.org/product
any element with focus becomes an outline.

What is the reason for that difference? Functional/technical/aesthetical?
(I am using Google Chrome).

Re: Proposed change for download page

2021-01-04 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi Matthias,

Just my 2¢

I have reread the post "Zusammenarbeit Programme von Apache OO-Base und
Java-JRE"

http://de.openoffice.info/viewtopic.php?p=293070#p293070

A user was surprised to find out that (1) AOO hadn't not been installed in
64-bit folder and (2) that there is no easily accessible information on
32-bit/64-bit version.

Earlier in this thread you wrote: "And after the change I expect users to ask,
why they can't find a version for their 64-bit Windows."

That makes me wonder if the title for Windows i.e. "OpenOffice and Java - What
to do?"
will give a clue to issues (1) & (2) above.

Next question:
is the position and colour of the title adequate?
Will an ordinary user ever spot it? Perhaps the colour could be a bit more
discernible
and the title be placed to the right of the "Download language pack" button?

And slightly off-topic:

Using the search term "openoffice 32 bit" I landed on page "Apache OpenOffice
for Windows" (not up to date, plus one typo).

https://www.openoffice.org/product/windows.html

There is a passage:
"Please note: Apache OpenOffice is distributed as a 32-bit application. It will
run successfully in 32-bit
mode on 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows 8. But in those cases a 32-bit
JVM is required for some functionality. Details are here."

Link on the download page "Java and Apache OpenOffice"

https://www.openoffice.org/download/common/java.html

Page with sections:
- "Why Do I Need Java to Use Apache OpenOffice?",
- "Which Java Version Do I Need to Use Apache OpenOffice?"
- "Where Can I Get Java?".

Is that a good starting point?

Hi Matthias,

The same section - "Why get involved with the OpenOffice project?"

https://openoffice.apache.org/get-involved.html#why-get-involved-with-the-openoffice-project

1st paragraph: "There are many motivations for why volunteers (...)"
is superfluous because it is already where it should be i.e. in the 2nd
paragraph (the 2nd & 3rd sentence).

I could have sworn I reported that ages ago. ;‑)

I should have figured that out myself. * facepalm *
Yet your explanation begs the question: is there a need for a unified
approach as to the landing page?

English page (us/gb) leads to the AOO blog page.
Language versions - they fall into 4 categories:

1. to the AOO Release Notes
Most of the language versions:
(ast), (da), (de), (es), (fr), (it),
(lt), (hu), (nl), (no), (pl), (sk),
(sl), (sv), (tr), (vi), (ru), (sr),
(he), (hi), (km), (ta), (th), (zh-cn),
(zh-tw), (ja), (ko)

Note: (fr), (it), (el), (ja) - not directly

2. to the AOO blog page
- Catalan --> Català (ca)
- Czech --> Čeština (cs)
- Basque --> Euskara (eu)
- Scottish --> Gàidhlig (gd)
- Galician --> Galego (gl)
- Bulgarian --> български език (bg)

3. to sort of "Get Involved in Apache OpenOffice"
- Portuguese [Brazilian] --> Português [do Brasil]
http://www.openoffice.org/pt-br/participe.html

4. to a faulty page: "404 - Page not Found"
- Finnish --> Suomi (fi)
http://www.apache.org/dev/service_unavailable.html?site=blogs.apache.org=404

Plus of course "Arabic --> العربية (ar)" - present in the HTML code but
not on the list (language drop-down).

Czesław

Re: Application Start Page Question

2020-11-17 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi,

First, let me state the obvious.
Extended tips are activated - then in the AOO Center hovering mouse over
one of the six items
(Text document, Spreadsheet etc.) displays an entry from the Help:

"The document icons each open a new document of the specified type."

AOO Help for Start Center:

"(...)
You see the Start Center when no document is open in OpenOffice.
Click an icon to open a new document or a file dialog.
The document icons each open a new document of the specified type.
1. Text Document opens OpenOffice Writer
2. Spreadsheet opens OpenOffice Calc
3. Presentation opens OpenOffice Impress
4. Drawing opens OpenOffice Draw
5. Database opens OpenOffice Base
6. Formula opens OpenOffice Math
The Templates icon opens the Templates and Documents dialog.
The Open icon presents a file open dialog."

I second Jörg's and Matthias' opinions - user comfort (UX) and logic shall
prevail.
Yet it is true that the Start Center per se does not emphasize in any way
the names of components of the Suite.
Who reads the AOO Help or activates the extended tips for good?
(should the latter become context-sensitive).

Just my 2¢.

BTW:

Based on my experience with LibreOffice, I would call it "a degrade". ;‑)

Re: How to create a child page in Apache OpenOffice Community space (cwiki)?

2020-11-17 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi Dave, Andrea

@Dave
I understand your words but when I start here (being logged in):

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+4.1.8

- on the bottom of the left navigation I see only "Space tools"
- just to the right of the breadcrumbs there is no an outline icon
(and what is "the edit page"?)
- I see no "Create child page" to press.

@Andrea
I have already tried the Copy function - got a message:
"You do not have permission to add pages to the space you have selected.
Please choose a different space"

That is why I choose the "Create" button to compose a draft...

Thank you both for your patience.

Czesław

How to create a child page in Apache OpenOffice Community space (cwiki)?

2020-11-17 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi all,

Could someone please explain to me in layman's term how to create a child
page for AOO 4.1.8 Release Notes?

I studied online help and offline manual for Confluence, tried a few times
and ended up with a draft in APACHECON / Dashboard / Home.
I can neither move it to Apache OpenOffice Community space nor create a
blank page therein.

Am I missing something or too dumb?

Question about 4.1.8 Release Notes

2020-11-11 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi,

Release Notes: section "Known Issues" ---> "For Mac Users"
bulleted list, last item of the 2nd level:
"Due to a known bug in Oracle Java installations of Apache OpenOffice on
OSX [...]".

In 4.1.3 and 4.1.4 Release Notes that item was the main level item i.e. not
under "Apache OpenOffice 4.1.x will be flagged [...]".
It was demoted as of Release Notes for AOO 4.1.5.

In 4.1.8 Release Notes (Dutch) one can see it as the main level item.

I am macOS-illiterate. Will "a known bug in Oracle Java installations of
Apache OpenOffice on OSX [...]"
be a reason for the Gatekeeper to flag AOO? If the answer is NO, then the
item in question should be promoted.

A juxtaposition of Release Notes' excerpts is available at the following

AOO 4.1.8 Release Notes - draft

2020-10-12 Thread Czesław Wolański
Hi,

Draft AOO 4.1.8 Release Notes, section "Known Issues" - "For macOS users":

*1. Space*
Space is needed in "password.This".
(space is present in AOO 4.1.7 Release Notes)

*2. "than"*

I suspect that "than" is inappropriate in the sentence:

"If not able to upgrade to Java 9 than install the legacy version of
Apple Java from the following link: Legacy Apple Java 6."

"than" is also in AOO 4.1.7 Release Notes. Could it be changed to "then"? (
Better late then ever ;‑) ).

Thank you!

What Pedro pointed out is exactly my concern.
In screenshots on the left and on the right, the "Default" is checked. Yet
spin field control is enabled/disabled.
I find it slightly inconsistent, though it may be convenient in terms of
UX.
(Similar inconsistency one can observe when playing with the Find toolbar
in AOO Writer).

Thank you for pointing out this mistake.
I can only speak for myself - I am grateful and not embarrassed at all.
My mother tongue (L1 - Polish) makes me wonder if I'll ever understand it,
let alone foreign languages I happen to "speak".

Just out of curiosity (I am not the cat...):
Wording "Since 20 years" is simply not English, unless it refers to a point
in time code-named "20 years"
True or False? ;‑)

Hi all,

My apologies for a delayed response. Due file is available at the following

COMMENT
I studied Jörg's original proposal. It occured to me there should be a way
to gently move the focus from the otherwise important "Apache / Open
Office"
to Jorg's sound suggestion: "Open. For all. Since 20 years"
(short, dynamic, very catchy slogan - like the one by Ritter Sport:
"Quadratisch. Praktisch. Gut.",
in English: "Square. Practical. Good.").

So I added two gray horizontal lines - source of which we all know (the
Start Center).

Position, thickness, type, length and colour of lines may depend on:
- the main block ("Apache / Open Office" OR the seagull logo with "Apache /
Open Office")
- the font size/colour combination for the slogan
- the visual context.

I didn't make my amateurish proposal public because I understood time
constraints, space constraints
and the need for a simple (but not simplistic), universal solution ( About
dialog and/or Splash Screen).

Regards,

Czesław
