Gavin;

The mwiki has a file upload function that we use to upload PDF ODT files
of our uder guides. We then link those files to specific pages of the
wiki from which users can can download them.

For example for The Getting Started Guided we first upload the book file
to the wikiAnd then link to the Apache OpenOffice 4.1 User Guides (PDF)
page.

I hope this helps, if not let me know.

Dave,

Because we use the default PDFA-1 to create the PDF files from
OpenOffice, it is not unusual to have chapter files over 5MB. The real
problem comes in when we create the PDF for the complete book. I do have
PDF compression software to compress them.Currently the full book for
the Getting Started Guide is 38MB. I was able to compress that down to
12.7MB.

Considering that the other guides full book files may be larger, at this
point I believe a 20MB limit is a good compromise. How does this sound

A Short History on the Term "Bug"

2023-06-30 Thread Keith N. McKenna

I came across this bit of trivia on a news group I follow:

PS --- don't you love the term "bug". Where I used to work, they had the
late Grace Murray Hopper in to give us a talk every few years. One of
her anecdotes of the early days was how the term came about. One time a
"down" was caused by an insect getting into the machine and causing a
short. Could just picture the glee of those people as youngsters as they
attached the specimen* and pages and pages about its life cycle, etc. to
the hated "problem report" they were required to submit for every "down"
as a sort of protest. So naturally, the next time they came over with a
report on a down the response was "OK, what kind of a bug was it this time".

* They had sent over to the Smithsonian for an ID and as much
information about it as possible, so they had a LOT of pages to append.

The unasked question is the license and you’ll have to choose the Creative
Commons license plus decide if that allows overall license to be AL2 or not.

Sent from my iPhone

Dave;

Thank you for your insight into this. The Guides were always going to be
licensed under cc-by 3.0 or greater, and are a reuse of the 3.3 Guides
by the OOo Authors Team. So the Copyright would be to The ASF with an
Acknowledgement to the 3.3 Guide with its copyright. Does that sound
right to you?

But I would suggest a simpler approach now: we can try and configure

and update the site configuration to use GMail as SMTP. And then, if
it works, we replace it with a more reasonable sender, like an
apache.org address. ...

Configuring a sending account seems like a reasonable idea.
Yes, I am more than happy to help out with any necessary testing.

It took many attempts but I believe it works now. A simple way to test
it is to register a new user at

https://extensions.openoffice.org/en/user/register

or request a password reset mail (that you can simply ignore) at

https://extensions.openoffice.org/en/user/password

Some more details:

- I've only fixed Extensions so far, but Templates should be identical

- I tried with a GMail account created to this purpose, but it didn't
work: while I enabled POP/IMAP (and thus SMTP, I assume) in the GMail
settings, the site cannot connect to it. Port 465 is blocked on the
SourceForge side it seems, so port 587 with STARTTLS is the only viable
option; it connects, but for some reason GMail refuses credentials;
maybe websites must use the GMail API (which would be an issue, as the
application doesn't support it) to connect to GMail? Feedback welcome if
someone has already configured GMail SMTP successfully on a website.

- Then I simply created an account on a personally-owned SMTP server and
retried, with port 587 and STARTTLS. This worked for me. This is the
currently configured option, so if you are testing this is the one you
will test.

- Then I briefly tried with my ASF credentials and the ASF mail server
mail-relay.apache.org still 587/STARTTLS. It worked! But of course I
cannot leave my credentials in the site configuration so I reverted it
to the (working) option above.

Suggested steps forward:

1) We get confirmation that this is fixed not only for me

2) Then I can apply the same fix to Templates and have a fix in place,
where the only drawback is that it uses my server

3) Then I would create a new issue like the abandoned
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-21334 so that INFRA can
advise on whether we have a way to use the ASF mail server but without
storing personal credentials.

Regards,
   Andrea.

I successfully registered an account and received the congraulations
e-mail to my @apache.org address

+1 from me.

The only reason I didn't include them myself, is that back then I
expected

4.2.0 to be out soon, and didn't want to waste time backporting to 4.1.x
which was about to be EOL.

Just to prevent any misunderstanding:

4.1.x is EOL when a 4.2.0 release is finally published. And even then we
can decide to have both branches in parallel for some time.

But as we have no date for 4.2.0, 4.1.x is and will be the most current
release branch.

Marcus
Based on Damjan's explanation of why he didn't backport them a +1 from
me as well.

While not using PDF-1A may reduce the size because fonts etc. are not
embedded in the PDF we lose the control over the appearance of the PDF
on the user side.

The problem with PDF/A-1A is that it does not allow transparencies and
converts them to a graphic. For the Getting Started Guide, this
results in a 3 page ToC graphic, as well as changes to many of the
graphics used. If we are going to loose control anyway, I would rather
do it and gain smaller file size right now.

You are right regarding transparency... I didn't think of that.

But then we should at least embed the used font(s).

However, this brings up the question is it time to explore other means
of creating the PDF than what we have today? Have we ever looked at
PDFBox?

Depending on your OS you could also test one of these PDF "printer". I
often use PDF24 on Windows...

What I have done for the PDF is to delete the TOC from the ODT and
create the PDF\A-1a and export  the bookmarks as active links. It is
still a bit larger than I would like, but it does embed the fonts as
well give the user usable TOC.

This was a straight install of the RC1 file from SVN over the released

some wonky problems with this system for a bit. Definitely time to get
a knew one.

What I wanted to say, maybe you did an administrative install with
4.1.11? That *could* explain the problem when updating...

I installed it on 4 systems (Windows 7, 11 / VM, Bare Metal) without
problem. This sounds like your system is really "wonky".

The 4.1.11 instance was not an administrative install. I only do
administrative installs for your test versions for QA.

To make it even more wonky, if I run the installer from my NAS drive
it opens and appears to install, but it actually does not even unpack

Is there a way to manually unpack the cab file to be able to run the

7-ZIP should be able to unpack it, but I am not sure if that would make
it installable. If setup.exe doesn't work from the extracted folder,
then something is wrong with your Windows installer.

Why? ;-)

en-US version? Did you check the download, this looks like a broken
binary.

Yes en-US version. File verifies correctly against the .asc detached
signature, and the SHA256 and SHA512 hashes.

Installs without a problem for me on Windows 7...

NSIS complains about the Windows installer? Is it up to date on your
system?

As far as I know, yes. I removed Version 11 and it installed again fine.

Interesting...

I never had a problem with updating to a newer version.
In fact this is what makes the installation via Microsoft Store so easy.

(But I remember that you did an administrative installation at one time?)

Matthias

This was a straight install of the RC1 file from SVN over the released
4.1.11. It simply refuses to access the installer.I have been having
some wonky problems with this system for a bit. Definitely time to get a
knew one.

It looks like I am going to be unable to do any QA work to be able to
vote on this release.

Is the enclosed still true for AOO 4.1.x Impress

2022-03-09 Thread Keith N. McKenna

The Chapter on Impress in the Getting Started Guide
contains the following note for using media files in Linix
based systems:

In Linux-based systems such as Ubuntu, media files do not
work straight out of the box. You need to download the
Java Media Framework API (JMF) and add the path to jmf.jar
to the Class Path in Tools > Options > OpenOffice > Java.

Is this still true for 4.1.x versions of AOO.

I think that would be a good idea Matthias. My only concern would be that
we "Publish" them and not "Release" them. As to the methadology used that
should probably be discussed as we get closer to actually getting the
Getting Started Guide ready to go. Considering I had to do a search to
figure out what a PWA was, I might not be the best person to ask about
that.

What really has me concerned at this point is that we have 253 issues that
are tagged for 4.2.0. This is an unwieldy number of issues to deal with
given the resources that we have for QA.

I am just not sure where we would want to set the bar as far as reducing
that 253 to a reasonable number.

Mathias;
Given the changes in Bugzilla I believe that it is time for a dev 3 build.
We really also need to either start working on the Release Blockers or
seriously look at pushing some of them off to a later release or we will
never get a 4.2 Release.

Carl;

I believe that would be a wonderful addition to our QA tools. Currently
I am using windows 10, but do not have the disk capacity for a build
environment. If you can get this working it would enable me to
contribute much more to our QA efforts.

I am more than willing to run any tests needed for Windows 10 Professional.

Hi Matthias;

Unfortunately I cannot as Windows 10 is playing stupid as usual. I
cannot unpack it to my test folder, as 4.2.0 Dev Build 2 is on the
system and AOO rejects the Test build as the Dev-build is considered a
higher revision.

With some of the latest updates I can no longer unpack it to my NAS
drive. I am Leaving Sunday for a week at Conception Abbey in Missouri
and will not be back until a week from Saturday when I will have time to
threaten the system with bodily harm and get at least one one method to
work.

Hi Carl;

I mention the link as I prefer to run builds other than the GA Release
without linking it to my release profile. That way if there is a

From a strictly process standpoint. I see a major problem with a "white
list" that depends on a user manually entering data or picking from a
drop-down list or multiple check boxes. The "average user" who may well
not know what ftps or .uno:is and does is likely to go for the "all of

This could be a reasonable solution though I do see potential drawbacks.
1) Is dependent on users taking the time to give constructive
   feedback.
a)Conversely,it could generate serious aggravation from
non-technical users generating a fair amount of
bad publicity not only in the lists and the forum,
but also in social media and word of mouth.
2) Could be a reasonable first step until a more automated
   approach can be explored.

>
> 2- whitelist all ".uno:" targets (but would this open possible
> malicious exploits?)

This could be an excellent solution. The one caveat is that it should be
well researched so that we do do not again fall into the trap of UC
(Unintended Consequences].This is in no way intended as criticism of the
excellent work that went into solving this security problem and getting
the Release out in a timely manner. The UC trap is always waiting to
ambush anybody in any walk of life.

>
> 3- add a generic box "don't ask any more" on the warning window, that

Again I believe that this could cause problems for the non-technical
user getting frustrated and using it, thus negating the reason for the
check. .

The Release Candidate is good for production/GA:

[X] yes / +1

[ ] no / -1

My vote is based on

[X] binding (member of PMC)

[ ] I have built and tested the RC from source on platform [ ]

[X] I have tested the binary RC on platform [Windows 10 Professional]

Also checked the the installer file against the GPG signature file and

As I remember correctly Release Notes for 3.4, 3.4.1 and 4.0.0 were
pretty much free style. Version 4.0 was a major release with big
enhancements, top of the list was the introduction of the side bar. In
the context of a major Release the statements that you reference made
sense as it was a major change to the UI.

Somewhere between 4.0.0 and 4.0.1 I developed the Template the we
currently use to generate release notes to give a consistent look and
feel as to where to find pertinent information.

I believe the information is covered, just in other sections of the
notes. However I am always open to suggestions on what could be added or
changed.

Thanks Matthias, i knew we had made that change just couldn't find it in
a quick perusal of the Release Notes.

As for the Template, it has been available as a Space Template on the
cwiki, and has been used as the basis of the Release Notes since Version
4.0.1 I believe.

The Template is available as a Space Template and can be invoked by
clicking the create button on the cwiki and looking for the Release
Notes template. Now that I think about it I will promote it so that it
shows as the top template in the Space.

It basically has the boilerplate text for the Note and asks you to for
the new version, previous version and what type of release and stores
those and inserts them where needed in the Note.

I am in the process of redoing the template for the Release Notes. Is
there still a problem with building AOO on Windows with Java 8? If not I
will delete the Note in The Known Issues section.

I will be setting aside time tomorrow after church to go through and
redesign the template that is used to generate the release notes. I will
then generate a dummy release note and send to dev@ and hope there is
more feedback on it than there was on the original.

Francis;

Working in Windows safe mode did the trick. I look forward to the
results of your tests on your Linux machine.

when I am checking a bug report.

I tried a quick test with calc with no problem. Then I tried an
unrelated Writer file with no problem. It appears that the problem is
related only from the files in openoffice-docs/Getting-Stared-Guide.

I will do some further tests on that do not appear to be touched yet.
