Re: To receive answers to my posts
Hi Peter, selective/filtered responses are not possible for AOO mailing lists. You can only opt to receive either all or none. If you chose the latter option, me and the other moderators will let your emails through to the list and you will be able to track the replies with the public archive of the mailing list at http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/openoffice-dev/. Another option would be writing a filter rule for you email client. This works extremely well with Thunderbird but the web clients of popular email services are usually very limited when it comes to filtering. Hi Michael, On 24/09/14 19:13, RA Stehmann wrote: On 24.09.2014 10:50, Jörg Schmidt wrote: [...] I don't want to protect trolls, but there are different meanings about how to handle the problem. I only refuse the way of acting Jörg wants to dictate me. I am dictating here nothing. Ok, excuse my poor English. I only refuse the way of acting Jörg wants to instruct me. We discussed that topic on the list. To ban an email address isn't very effective, because that person is able to join the mailing list with another email address. I have been banning a couple of trolls over the years and they had never resubscribed with another email address. If that happens, moderators need to show that the game is many against one and continue kicking the guy out. So some people proposed to ignore his posting and, if that person gives wrong advices to users, to mark them factually as a wrong advice. The result of this is that the email traffic is increasing with many postings that are not useful to the average list reader. Consequently, a couple of those average list readers will unsubscribe which is not desirable. I would strongly recommend to immediately ban the guy who's disturbing the list's peace if he has been properly warned before. /Peter I think, that's a proper way. But the other supporters has to support that way, because I don't know anything better than that person. But some people react very angry. That seems to feed the troll. Now Jörg confides me anymore and that's very irksome for the germanophone community, There are sometimes strong disputes between him and me. I've declared, if the community really wants to have another moderator, I will abdicate, no problem: I've enough other ways to support Free Software. The OpenOffice brand should mean that users can run on any supported platform and have a good experience. IMHO we should not say we support a platform unless we're willing and able to meet that kind of expectation. This is very true also in other areas. I suggest we drop support for OSX 10.4 and 10.5 for Apache OpenOffice 4.1. There are some good points for the proposal: - the latest update of OSX 10.4 was in 2007 and Apple dropped support for it in May 2011 - the latest update of OSX 10.5 was in 2009 and Apple dropped support for it in July 2012 - Mozilla stopped releasing for them after FireFox 16 - Google stopped releasing for them after Chrome 22 - Microsoft stopped releasing for them after MSO 2011 - Adobe stopped releasing for them in 2012 - Oracle only provides Java for OSX 10.6 and up - Adium stopped releasing for them after Adium 1.4.5 - etc. Makes sense: +1 Of course one could say that our development and testing community is way bigger than their counterparts in the above projects and companies even if were to combine their teams. From that supposition we'd have resources to spare to keep releasing for these unsupported platforms. On the other hand the assumption is a bit on the optimistic side and so we have keep reevaluating our target platforms. I assume, that an Average Joe user has not installed a snapshot previously and therefore no config folder \4 exists. Up to now I have always installed the full versions over my old versions, and never got problems (or never notice some.) I'll do some testing tonight. I have two clean VM images, for Windows 8 32-bit and Windows 7 64-bit, that I can install the AOO 4.0 RC on. Since these are fresh images they don't have any residual files from previous AOO installs. I was not able to get a crash with AOO 4.0 RC on Windows 7 64-bit or Windows 8 32-bit. I tested Writer in a document with a mix of objects and formats, doing a lot of editing, formatting, copy/paste and delete operations, including formatting via the Sidepanel. This was the en-US version. So this doesn't look like a shallow crash that everyone will see. But it would be good to narrow it down. For example, has anyone seen it on a non-German version? Is that a clue? Is a particular object involved? I tried also with images, drawings, lists, tables, etc. Was anything more exotic involved? While I was a QA engineer for OpenOffice at Sun, we had: ++ Crashes that were limited to a particular language ++ Crashes that happened only (exactly) once with every installation. ++ Crashes that happened only after the first start of an installation ++ Of course, crashes that were limited to a particular language ++ ... Now imagine even a combination of two or more of those preconditions and you may prefer looking for a needle in a haystack. Virtualbox for example has the great feature of taking snapshots. That should be extremely useful to be able to rollback preconditions. Peter Mine was a clean new install, not an update. But it is hard to imagine a scenario where copy or delete operations behave differently depending on whether the install was an update or not. -Rob -Rob Kind regards Regina Kind regards Regina - Dennis -Original Message- From: Max Merbald [mailto:max.merb...@gmx.de] Sent: Sunday, July 14, 2013 11:01 AM To: dev@openoffice.apache.org Cc: Regina Henschel Subject: Re: Installation on Windows 8, 64bit Hi Regina, I reported the same thing on June 22, but I couldn't reproduce it the next day. However I would focus more on the final QA than the initial access/commit to the code. I'm talking about restricting access for non-programmers, those who have permissions currently, but who have never ever contributed a single line of code. No actual programmer would be restricted. Could I check in code to be build with AOO? I assume yes. If that assumption is correct, I totally agree that such ability should be disabled. I don't need that to moderate mailing lists and observing from the peanut gallery. Peter For the kinds of risks I'm describing QA would accomplish nothing. Any hacker worth the name would delay activation of an attack until after millions of copies had already been installed, and then they would activate the code remotely. -Rob On 4/3/13, Rob Weir robw...@apache.org wrote: We're starting to take a deeper look at what is required to integrate code signing into the OpenOffice build and release process. As you probably know operating systems, especially Windows and MacOS, are now checking for digital signatures and by default prevent users from installing programs that are not signed. We see similar checks being integrated into anti-virus scanners and even web browsers now. One of the things that has come out in discussions is how large a target OpenOffice is, to hackers. We're on track to have 50 million downloads in our first year. If someone is able to get a virus or a trojan into our code, they have the ability to cause a huge amount of damage. And if we are also signing our code, then this damage can propagate even faster, since the OS's let down their guard somewhat when dealing with signed code. (Signed code == trust). Of course, none of this has ever happened with OpenOffice, but with the stature and reach we have, it is reasonable to believe that we could be a target of opportunity for someone wishing to cause trouble. We should always keep this in mind and make sure that we are taking reasonable precautions to prevent this from happening. One vulnerability, in theory, is that we have over 100 committers (123 to be exact) who have permission to modify the source code in Subversion. Each account is protected by a self-selected passcode. It is not clear to me that we even have requirements on password complexity or expiration policies. In any case, the weakness of this approach is not necessarily what you might think -- brute force attack on the password. If someone wants to initiate a spear phishing attack against a committer, it would be something like: 1) Standard phishing: a spoofed note from Apache Infra, with some invented story that asks you to change your password but first enter your old one for confirmation. It leads you to a fake, non-Apache website. 2) If you use the same passcode on multiple web services and one of them is compromised, say by retrieving the passcode hashes, then it is easy to do offline dictionary attacks (rainbow tables, etc.) and figure out your Apache password. 3) If you lose control of your laptop, at a conference, bar, hotel, whatever, even temporarily, someone can gain access to your Subversion account, via applications that cache credentials, like TortoiseSVN. 4) Similar to #3, but by taking control of your laptop via remote means, i.e., via a virus loaded on to your machine via another vulnerability. None of these things have happened to us yet, but all of these things are possible. So how do we reduce this risk? There are a few things we do or should be doing already. 1) Be careful on the machines that you use Subversion from. Treat it like a machine where you access your bank account from. If you are visiting risky sites or downloading and installing software from dubious places, then you are putting your Apache account at risk. 2) Use a high-complexity Apache passcode, one not used by you on any other service. 3) Change your passcode periodically, say every 90 days. 4) On laptops be sure to set a strong login password, but also where available also a separate harddrive password. These should also be strong passwords, not reused, and should be periodically changed. For those who are building binaries for distribution, the above guidance is even more critical. Of course, we also protect the code through our CTR process. All active coders should be subscribed to the commits list and should be reviewing the changes that are made there. Trust the code, not the person. Remember, if we ever are attacked then it

Draft: Guidelines for redistributing (an original) Apache OpenOffice with 3rd party bundles (e.g. books or template packages)
Hi, from time to time there are requests to bundle OpenOffice with 3rd party products. A typical case is that a publishing house wants to release a commercial box in which they bundle an original version of Apache OpenOffice with a handbook (either printed or electronic) and some goodies like a pack of templates. As I'm expecting such cases will pop-up frequently (mostly at private@, hence they're not too visible here), it would be good to have some guidelines in place. I have drafted some, please review and comment. The result is intended to be submitted as a proposal here and should go on our website later. Happy New Year Peter - === Guidelines for redistributing (an original) Apache OpenOffice with 3rd party bundles === 1) You must solely use an unmodified binary version of Apache OpenOffice that can be downloaded by anyone from http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html. If you build your own product from the Apache OpenOffice sources, then you must give your product a different name that must not be confused with Apache OpenOffice. Under certain circumstances, you may then use 'Powered by Apache OpenOffice'. For details, please refer: http://www.apache.org/foundation/marks/faq/#poweredby 2) You must always use the proper name 'Apache OpenOffice x[.y[.z]]' (e.g. 3.4.1) for our product. IMPORTANT: Do NOT use 'Apache Open Office' or 'Apache OpenOffice.org' or 'OpenOffice' or 'Open Office' or 'OpenOffice.org' etc. 3) Do not use any additions to 'Apache OpenOffice x.y.z' with the title of your bundle that imply that you are shipping a product which is superior to Apache OpenOffice, e.g. you must not use a title like 'Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1 Professional'. You may rather use the title 'Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1' with a subtitle like '{YOUR_BRAND} Professional Pack' because you have added value to an original Apache OpenOffice. 4) If you want to use the Apache OpenOffice logo on your bundle, you must solely use the original, unmodified Apache OpenOffice logo: https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/ooo-site/trunk/content/images/AOO_logos/svg/OOo_Website_v2_copy.svg 5) You must attribute the Apache Software Foundation and it's trademarks with all components of your bundle (e.g. Cover, Box, printed Book, electronic book, CD/DVD etc.). A proper attribution is: --- Apache,[ the “Apache logo”,] Apache OpenOffice, OpenOffice and the “Apache OpenOffice logo” are trademarks of the Apache Software Foundation (http://www.apache.org) --- For the detailed Apache Trademark Policy, please refer: http://www.apache.org/foundation/marks/ 6) You must make clear with all components of your bundle (e.g. Cover, Box, printed Book, electronic book, CD/DVD etc.) that you are providing an unmodified version of Apache OpenOffice with your bundle. A proper way to do that it adding an informative statement like: --- Includes the original Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1 as provided by the Apache Software Foundation under Apache License Version 2 at http://www.openoffice.org/download/;. --- 7) Your setup routine must clearly distinguish between installing Apache OpenOffice and the additional products of your bundle. 8) There may be exceptions to the guidelines as above, but they must be explicitly permitted by the Apache Software Foundation. 9) You must contact the Apache OpenOffice Project Management Committee at priv...@openoffice.apache.org before releasing your bundle so our community is able to review it. Please keep in mind that these are just guidelines and granting you the privilege to use 'Apache OpenOffice' with your bundle is at the sole discretion of the Apache Software Foundation on a case by case basis.

Please state your availability: if we have enough people, it would be nice to request a large stand instead of a normal one. Timeline: proposals due by 28 Nov. We think a normal stand is better than a large one. It's better there are lot of Apache people around a smaller stand than only a few around a large one. And we have no merchandize articles to present (like other projects). What would you want to give out if you could? Is there something that we could use to help the image of the project in the wider open source community? What would you want? (and how many?) In the past I have created T-Shirts for example and we gave them more or less for a small donation to people. They were initially paid by the Community Council (Team OpenOffice). The collected money (minus production costs) went back to Team OpenOffice . We could do something similar and the money would go back to the ASF. We had also other small stuff that we gave away for donations. Always nice are cups, T-Shirts, stickers, flyers,... something like that. Ideally not branded for FOSDEM but more neutral for AOO that it can be used for other events as well. We can also think about AOO branded note pads (~1500-2000) that we can give the organizers to put it in the conference welcome packs. Information on the note pad could be info where to find our DevRoom and the booth for example. We could also benefit some of some banners (roll up banners for example) If we want to do something like this, we need ideas for an logo/image we want to put on shirts, cups, etc. and of course the technical realization that can be used for the production. Other questions: - collecting quotes for the production and volunteers who take care of it - who can carry the material to the event (I booked my flight already and can't carry too much) The time is running and many questions would have to be clarified. Some more info and basic quotes: - rollup banner - 100-150€ - note pad, 1000 pieces, á 50 sheets, 100% recycling paper, 2 color print, glue laminated on one site, first quote I found ~1050 € - stickers, 100mm, 1000 pieces, ~150€ See for some concrete stuff (shirt, banner) http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Conferences/FOSDEM/2009 http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Conferences/FOSDEM/2010 I'm supporting your request. Maybe you should resend it as a separate [Proposal]. As well, I'm not sure about the policies. Maybe it's up to the PMC to decide. From my point of view the PMC. Best regards, Peter Juergen A. So a normal stand would fit. A booth is a place where people can find and meet Apache supporters to talk, get information etc.. People walk around and see: Oh, there is also an Apache OpenOffice booth! And we can encourage them to ask us, get information etc.. We can contact people who don't prospect us specificly. In that way a booth is important even than a dev-room exists. We like to invite other Apache projects to join and support us and to present their project at the booth. Regards Michael

And, from my point of view at least half of the referred items would not cause any IPR issue (at least it's like that in Germany) because they're simple screen shots which everyone can reproduce within seconds so they lack of a threshold of originality.
