Re: Apache OpenOffice Meetup Switzerland

2013-10-15 Thread Guy Waterval
Hi Raphael,

Your suggestion is a good one, but I think we also should try to approach
such technical schools and universities because they have a big potential
and also a great influence in the society.
The principal issue is how to do that. There are, for me two available
approach :
#1 Directly through an official AOO presentation, a solution probably more
complex and heavy which requires means that we perhaps don't really have.
#2 Through an users association, not obligatory limited to OpenOffice,
let's say an association which promotes the use of free software. The
creation of an association classified public utility is simple in
Switzerland, and offers some advantages.

The second solution has clearly my preference, because it allows to
approach the potential users with a more regional color. Volunteers who
have an interest to collaborate directly with the AOO project could be
encourage to do it, others who don't will directly collaborate with the
project, for questions of langage or maybe also cultural differences, are
not lost for the project but have an opportunity to collaborate indirectly
with the sensation of being a little more at home. This solution could
also allow to create more specific layers between the AOO project and the
users, with a better proximity, which seems to me important for push the
use of OpenOffice in the society in a multicultural context.

I will say ethz for 2014 and Epfl for 2015 or 2016.

I'm not sure if we talk about the same thing. I talk about a small meetup
and not about a conference. So a restaurant would probabily be better.

 Hi Raphael,

 Good idea.
I suggest http://www.ethz.ch/ for this year, and
 http://www.epfl.ch/ for
next year. So, a maximum of people should be happy.

I think what Raphael says, this is what we call in the German community
OpenOffice Stammtisch.
Last weekend had e.g. the team of PrOOo-Box (www.prooo-box.org), such a
OpenOffice Stammtisch organized in Lübeck.

A OpenOffice Stammtisch is nothing more than a meeting in a restaurant where
people (community members and others) talk about OpenOffice - they drink and eat
and talk about OpenOffice and free software.

Greetings,
Jörg

Hi Jörg,

OK, many thanks, I didn't know about it.
It's seems effectively a good way to create groups of users without the
need of a big structure.

Back in the early microcomputer days (c 1979/80) when we built our own machines
with a soldering iron and a kit, our local microcomputer club used meet for a
talk, and many of us would go afterwards for a meal. This built a good social
group.

You can combine both: a meeting in a University or a technical schools
with a couple of presentations and then a more social part in a
restaurant. This way, you have a social moment for existing volunteers
but you can also attract some new volunteers.

Apache has an Event in a Box proposal that is now being finalized and
that you might find useful. Some outdated (for example, the Conference
Committee does not exist any longer) information:
