I suppose we could hold fedora-repos/fedora-release updates in testing
until right before the first RC is requested, but that doesn't really
pin it down any more, as that will happen when all known blockers have
been addressed, which could be anytime...

We could add a note to any RC testing announcements?

For that matter we could suggest a distro-sync with the release
announcement, but I guess that could be confusing to some.

At a quick glance, I don't see obsoletes, provides, or conflicts in
the Fedora spec file, so it wasn't a direct replacement per se. It
was rust-exa being retired and rust-eza being added, which didn't
happen in the same release. It's up to the relevant package
maintainers (Fabio and the Rust SIG) to decide if they want to retire
rust-exa from EPEL 9 and/or add rust-eza to EPEL 9.

If retirement of rust-exa is the chosen route, an unmaintained
upstream can certainly be viewed as the underlying reason why a
maintainer would have "no desire" to keep maintaining the package in
EPEL.

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/epel/epel-policy-retirement/#process_no_time_or_desire

Here is a general guide for requesting packages in EPEL (tldr; file a bugzilla).

Well, yes, that's...expected. Removing -t means you're not generating
automatic build dependencies for the test suite, so the things the test
suite needs don't get installed.

As I said in my mail, if you want to run the tests - which you should!
- you either need to get upstream to make its dependency version
specifiers looser, patch them downstream before the dependency
generator runs, or don't use the dependency generator but specify the
BuildRequires manually based on the text file.

The anchor is "whenever someone remembers we have to do it".

That's because you didn't add (automatic or otherwise) BuildRequires for
the test dependencies.

> Deleting line 61 here: https://paste.centos.org/view/c25fee49, everything

That's very much the wrong solution. Unless the test suite is something
kooky, you ought to run it in %check during the RPM build.
If the test suite indeed cannot be run due to dependency on network
access or a system service or a similar reason,
you should use %py3_check_import / %pyproject_check_import.

Help packaging PyTorch dependencies for Fedora

2023-10-11 Thread Kaitlyn Abdo
Hello everyone,

I hope this email finds everyone well. We are currently packaging PyTorch for
Fedora and we are actively packaging the dependencies. We’re reaching out to
see if anyone is interested in joining the project. If you’re interested in
more information, our meeting notes are in a GitHub repo and we have the AI/ML
SIG discussion page where we’ve hosted all of our post meeting discussions. We
have a WikiPage for our package assignment list if you would like to see what
needs packaging or just to see the status of the project. Our next meeting is
tomorrow, October 11th at 9AM EST and it’s on the FedoCal under the SIG
calendar. All lists are found below. If you’re interested in joining, have any
questions, or want to get a calendar invite for our reoccurring meeting, please
feel free to email me at ka...@redhat.com or Teng at t...@redhat.com.

Maybe we shouldn't even confuse release users with this.

I was just wondering what the "anchor" is, say "right after final
freeze" or "7 days before GA". We could put "updates-testing disabled
in fedora-release GA version" as a remark in there, just like "xy plan
on this" and such.

When the release slips like now the anchor time matters. One could
argue either way. I guess anchoring shortly before GA is safer in the
sense that beta testers receive updates longer while they are not being
pushed to stable during freeze.

You know how it goes: We ask them to test beta, beta is all good and
great, so they stay on branched ... In my case, because our uni terms do
not line up well with our release schedule, and I can't possibly defer
upgrades to the Xmas break ;-)

If the users have not modified the
/etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates-testing.repo manually, then the file
is automatically disabled for them when the GA fedora-repos package
gets to their system. It doesn't downgrade any packages they have
installed from u-t, though. So early adopters *may* want to `dnf
distro-sync` at this point, but in most cases that isn't necessary. It
probably wouldn't hurt to add "At some point during this Freeze, an
update to `fedora-release` and `fedora-repos` will be pushed out,
disabling updates-testing by default and identifying the system as a
GA release" to the Final Freeze announcement.

It works removing -t from %pyproject_buildrequires, EXCEPT if I keep all

Re: Strange(?) build failures for golang package

2023-10-11 Thread Fabio Valentini
The log output from the go compiler is really bad for grepping for errors.
I've learned that searching for ".go:" is a good way to do it. Looks like
this is the error that causes the failure:

"""
# github.com/go-task/task/internal/orderedmap
_build/src/github.com/go-task/task/internal/orderedmap/orderedmap.go:94:24:
type func(i K, j K) bool of less does not match inferred type func(a K, b
K) int for func(a E, b E) int
"""

There might be more errors hidden by this one though.

Strange(?) build failures for golang package

2023-10-11 Thread Mark E. Fuller
I am trying to update go-task for some time now and consistently getting
a build error/failure with no clear indication of what's happened:

https://download.copr.fedorainfracloud.org/results/fuller/test-builds/fedora-rawhide-x86_64/06508072-golang-github-task/builder-live.log.gz

Is it possible that there are build flags are default settings in the
golang macros that might be leading to this?

Thanks,
fuller

There's no exact time defined, but usually this happens shortly before we
start producing Final RC images. Pre-release testers are expected to be
able to configure it. But it's true that giving it more visibility
(announce when we disable updates-testing) would be beneficial for testing
purposes (interested people could toggle it back to enabled right away).

I noticed that we switched off updates-testing by default for F39
installs very recently. Is that something that is tied to the release
date or the final freeze date?

Early adapters should now how and whether to change this locally, of
course. I couldn't tell the timing from the release schedule.

And, of course, it makes sense to give "late early adopters" what will
be in the release, at the expense of a time frame without any updates.

Thank you for noticing this.

We knew those gnome application gets the power profiles from ppd
through dbus. Both legacy API and new API should be provided and
implemented.
So, a bit of engineer overhead is needed for this integration
proposal. (API integration for the client and tuned...etc.)

Yes, sure. Thanks for noticing it.
There are advantages and drawbacks for keeping old and having a new
API. We'll evaluate that and come out with a solution.
Also, I can help with switching to the new API for gnome-shell and g-c-c. :)

Thank you for your feedback. :)

tuned can provide advanced settings for more kinds of applications and
power management technologies.
Moreover, the basic function (ppd) can be kept and integrated with
tuned. Therefore, the user can select between the advanced and basic
modes according to the demands.
The benefits of it are greater than the installation overhead, I think.

It is a good way but it is a bit difficult to expand the power
management function.
