[DDN] blocking newspapers and TV
I had a teacher from New York write me today because she wanted to have a copy of the winning essay from the Genetics Essay Contest held recently. She couldn't access the essay through regular channels because we are blocked from registering on a newspaper or TV site due to school policies. I know that many newspapers require you to register before you can read an article they have published, but I had no idea that students and teachers cannot access newspapers and tv internet websites because of having to register. I gave her the address of GenEdNet, which I hope she can access. How can we to change such policies? [DDN] Interviews/Discussions
Hi Everyone: I just started a site called TrainersPod.com We interview people that have special educational needs e.g. in Africa and we also interview people that have found solutions e.g. in the US (or S. America where they may have some similar problems or S.E. Asia). Basically, we try to get those that have found solutions in the areas of e-learning, e-healthcare and e-business - but primarily in e-learning to share their solutions with those that are in need of such solutions. We feel such an exchange is vital if developing countries need to leapfrog into the 21st century as opposed to crawling through all the developments the developed country has been through. In this respect I am looking for people across the globe (which this listserv has) to let me know if they can be interviewed - (or better - to discuss) - so as to either to describe their needs or describe solutions they have found to their needs - e.g. how are they transforming or conducting e-learning where they are? What tools do they use (Open Source?) - what have they found in terms of LMS and CMS solutions that works best for their students? How did they transform from basic lecturing to a hybrid or straight to e-learning? These are the questions that people (your colleagues across the globe) have and would like to ask or have a answers to - so, please offer your assistance in helping us deliver this message. If you are interested (and we do everything via Elluminate - and if you don't know Elluminate I will teach you) please contact me - I don't want to make this sound like an ad but rather a call for you to serve your colleagues. You may write to me at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we will arrange a date and prepare questions ahead of time - so you feel comfortable with the process. It's all for a good cause. Hope you will reach me. I need to schedule people across the year or beyond. I would be doing at least two interviews per month. Thank you so much. Hope to hear from you or even if you have questions, just write to me - we are getting ready to start our blog and we could also have you put your input there. So there are many ways you can contribute. Please write to me your level of interest and topic area or your expertise or interests. Thank you so much. Asif. Re: [DDN] Suggestions for Nonprofit Free Open Source Software CD
Hi Andrew, Miguel already pointed out one concern about 'no cost' and 'free software', two different terms that are, unfortunately, different. Would that marketers stopped misusing free... free stuff? Free of what? :-) Anyways, take a closer look at the licensing... and I suspect you're doing this for Microsoft Windows, so you may want to specify that. Some suggestions. (1) I would add Seamonkey, for people who want an integrated email/browser. Not everyone buys into the Firefox and Thunderbird hype, and many organizations can benefit from Seamonkey. http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/ It's the *community* continuation of Mozilla. I'm not terribly pleased with the Mozilla Foundation for abandoning the integrated solution, but the community has kept it going and will continue to do so. IRC, HTML editor, Address book, browser, etc. Why go with stripped down versions? And despite what may be said by Firefox junkies - Seamonkey is just as fast. (2) PDF Creator is not really needed if OpenOffice.org is being used. OpenOffice creates PDFs on the fly. (3) Ganttproject might be worth looking into for project management: http://www.icewalkers.com/Linux/Software/519680/ganttproject.html (4) Wikipad: I don't know how I lived before it. http://www.jhorman.org/wikidPad/ Of course, you could probably just look through The Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society's OSSWIN CD: http://www.ttcsweb.org/osswin-cd/ I had nothing to do with it. I just use some of the same applications, and I'm not a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society (odd, isn't it?) Have fun! [DDN] Ghana - Follow up on study of Adolescents and the Internet
Just a follow up... Over a year ago, I asked members of this list serve to contribute some background information for a study examining Ghanaian adolescents' use of the Internet. Well - the results are now published in the latest issue of Developmental Psychology. The Hopkins press release is below. Let me know if you would like me to send you the entire article. Regards, Dina Dina Borzekowski, Ed.D. Assistant Professor Department of Health, Behavior and Society Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health May 1, 2006 Internet May Be the Way to Send Youth Health Messages In a study of Ghanaian teens and their Internet usage, Dina L.G. Borzekowski, EdD, assistant professor in the Bloomberg School's Department of Health, Behavior and Society, and her Ghanaian coauthors, Julius Fobil and Kofi Asante, learned that approximately 53 percent of teens from Ghana's capital city of Accra used the Internet to find health information, regardless of their school status, gender, age or ethnicity. The study is one of six articles about teens published today in a special issue of Developmental Psychology. In a world where we can sometimes be quick to point out the negative, this is a great example of the media being used in a positive way. The Internet can be a good educational and public health tool for hard-to-reach populations, said Borzekowski. The authors surveyed a representative sample of 778 15- to 18-year-olds living in Accra, Ghana, who were either in school or out of school. Participating youth completed self-report surveys of their media use. Whether it was for school, work or personal reasons, 52 percent of out-of-school Internet users had tried to get health information, while 53 percent of in-school Internet users had done the same. Of important social significance, said the authors was their finding that teens who were not in school used the Internet as an alternative to talking to their parents, who may have less formal education than the parents of teens in school. A lack of parental education or cultural taboos regarding sexual topics may make it more difficult for many of these [out-of-school] teens to get information on health and sex, said Borzekowski. The Internet is making great strides for youth in developing countries, said Borzekowski. The far-reaching and positive use of the Internet is invaluable for adolescents who want to find out more about personal, sensitive and embarrassing issues related to their bodies, relationships and health. Online Access by Accra's Adolescents: Ghanaian Teens' Use of the Internet for Health Information was authored by Dina L. G. Borzekowski, Julius N. Fobil and Kofi O. Asante. RE: [DDN] healthy people 2010 and the digital divide
April, I think we all agree with the points you make -- Taran made a quite good outline earlier. What I think we are all saying is Handle with great care -- check out the source. And if applying to self, especially internally, be extraordinarily careful-- whenever in doubt, consult with the right professional Errol Hewitt At 16:38 03/05/2006 -0700, you wrote: Thank you for this post, Siobhan. I do not think we can so quickly dismiss Internet access with regards to health or health care - and I hope that DDNers will read on to understand why it is particularly relevant to low-income and underserved children in the United States: While I agree with Taran that there are oftentimes misguided attempts to throw technology at the issue - and that health care merits a much more comprehensive approach - Internet access, and specifically broadband access should not be underestimated in its ability to expand access to important health information and health care, as well as in improving the quality of care for many. For example, teenagers in the U.S. - use the Internet to look for information about sensitive health subjects online (whereas they may be uncomfortable talking to parents, friends, teachers, etc. about them). In addition, there are numerous children and families in rural and inner city areas across the U.S. that experience a lack of physician specialists and sometimes primary care physicians - (there is a particular demand for psychiatry and Ophthalmology for children). Telemedicine has helped many children in these areas get care that they would not otherwise have had, and allow doctors in more isolated areas to get continued training and collegial contact that they might not otherwise have had (distance being a significant obstacle). Videoconferencing using broadband and store and forward technology is significant for these reasons. In addition, web-based electronic applications are being developed and used in some places in the U.S. -to screen families and children for eligibility for a number of public benefits, including public health programs that help to streamline enrollment, and expedite coverage (One-E-App is one such example). For more information about the ways in which technology can improve health for children, please see http://www.techpolicybank.org/TPB/Report/DOMS While I do not think Internet access, or any technology for that matter, is a silver bullet for any one specific or all social problems, it is important not to discount the significant information and services it can provide/improve. Expanding access to information and health care using something like the Internet are not trivial things. AND, we will need to advocate for training and equitable distribution of infrastructure as well as access to medical professionals, health care coverage, and many other resources, both human and otherwise to address such problems. -- April KirkHart, MSW Special Projects Coordinator The Children's Partnership 1351 3rd St. Promenade, Ste. #206 Santa Monica, CA 90401 Phone: (310) 260-1220 ext: 16 Fax: (310) 260-1921 [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.childrenspartnership.org http://www.techpolicybank.org http://www.contentbank.org From: Champ-Blackwell, Siobhan [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: The Digital Divide Network discussion group [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2006 19:01:52 -0500 To: The Digital Divide Network discussion group [EMAIL PROTECTED] Conversation: [DDN] healthy people 2010 and the digital divide Subject: RE: [DDN] healthy people 2010 and the digital divide I left Taran's question below. As a medical librarian, i would like to believe that an increase in a person's understanding about prevention and disease will help them to take better care of themselves and be a healthier person. And it will help them to know what to demand from health care providers. While it is true, that people of lower economic status have less access to high quality or to even adequate health care, it is also true that they have less access to reliable health information. More and more government agencies and nonprofits are relying on the Internet to be their vehicle to distribute the latest news in health research and preventative care. People without access to the Internet cannot get on resources that the National Institutes of Health, including the National Library of Medicine and its excellent web site MedlinePlus http://medlineplus.gov/ provide. Dealing with providing people Internet access to assist them in getting better access to health information is a very important step in assisting them in getting and demanding better access to health care. Information is Power - or at the very least, an important part of getting power. So, in fact, maybe someone would be prevented from getting malaria if they were able to get online and learn that they need to take specific preventative measures to avoid it, and then were able to demand that

Re: [DDN] Ghana - Follow up on study of Adolescents and the Internet
I was just starting to read this report, actually. For those of you who haven't seen it yet, the latest issue of Developmental Psychology focuses on the impact of the Internet on children and adolescents. It's a treasure trove of youth-related Internet research. I just posted a blog entry about another article in the journal focused on the impact of at-home internet access on the academic performance of low-income youth. There's also a link to the full journal articles, including the Ghana study. http://www.pbs.org/learningnow andy Borzekowski, Dina wrote: Just a follow up... Asante. Well, all else being equal, I would always choose free software. That way, nobody can make extortionate demands from you in future. It sounds as though Windows is not really free for you, because there is some learning required, whereas you are already familiar with the other OS. Assuming that that other OS is really free, as in free software, and it's free to host on it as well, it sounds like you will save time and money by sticking with it. Technically there is little to choose. A well-run free software server tends to be more reliable than a Windows one, but poor administration can make a mess of both. I would recommend looking at ThinkHost (thinkhost.com). Been using them for Drupal/CiviCRM sites for some time now and they are amazingly great with service, performance, and support... plus they have a pretty killer deal there right now... If you need to use CiviMail, check out http://www.gaiahost.coop/ While not quite as turn-key at ThinkHost IMHO, they have experience running and have configured their servers to run CiviMail. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Andy Carvin Sent: Thursday, May 04, 2006 11:50 AM To: Sully, Morgan Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Sullivan,Lindsay Subject: [DDN] Re: looking for a Drupal CMS host Isn't this the same message Xavier posted? Re: [DDN] Re: looking for a Drupal CMS host
I can personally vouch for Bluehost.com as a good host for Drupal sites. It's shared hosting, but done quite well and it scales well from 'casual user' to 'geek'. I would also suggest staying away from GoDaddy.com and other hosts which do not allow table LOCK and UNLOCK in MySQL. Drupal will run without the LOCK and UNLOCK of tables, but on a busy site it can be important that this ability is in operation. [DDN] [Resource] Arts Education Online
Hi DDN, Many of you know that over the last year I've been working to develop the International Peace Tiles project as a way to engage youth around the world in exploration of issues that impact their lives through art. The idea is that young people can create and exchange works of art that can be used to create murals in their schools and communities. By creating connections online at http:// www.peacetiles.net young people can share about themselves via a free blog, meet others, and arrange to swap their tiles. This year, I really love to engage more American classrooms in World AIDS Day (December 1, 2006) activities. I am in the process of writing a classroom guide that will make it really easy to integrate a look at global AIDS as a curriculum module, lasting from one afternoon to a full week. In the meantime, I wonder if you would take a look at http:// www.peacetiles.net and let me know what you think: is it easy to use, instructive, and engaging? How can it be improved? Re: [DDN] Fwd: Drupal on a Linux server VS. Microsoft server
As you point out, Drupal works on either. However, it's much easier to deal with Drupal on a *nix (in this case, Linux) server since it's really built for LAMP users; from cron to tar files. If you're going to run Drupal, it may be better to use Linux because of the continuity of training. Right now, I have a client building a Linux server to run Drupal, even though they are presently running an Apache build on Windows (the Saint, from Germany). Granted, I have personal bias to Linux, but I think Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP (LAMP) is the way to go.
