Re: [DQSD-Users] How to install on windows 7 32bit system
If all you see is Quick Search on the bottom, it means the bar is there, but hasn't got room to expand. You need to right click your toolbar and unlock it. Then expand the Quick Search toolbar by clicking on the pebbled vertical bar to the left of Quick Search and dragging it to the left to expand the toolbar. (You can reduce the space required for the toolbar by right clicking Quick Search and clearing the Show Title option.) -Original Message- From: Homam Khoshaim [mailto:hom...@gmail.com] Sent: November-07-09 10:01 AM To: DQSD users mailing list Subject: Re: [DQSD-Users] How to install on windows 7 32bit system yes i did. Resent in plain Text Format for DQSD List Archive purposes Fellow DQSD Users. Like most of you, I've been running DQSD for many years and cannot live without it! It's one of the very first things I install on my Windows taskbar. I finally got it to work flawlessly on my new Windows 7 x64 (RTM) machine and it behaves and looks great IMO! I developed the Vista theme (.css) (with Kim/Charlie) several years ago and now I've finished the Windows 7 Theme. It looks like part of the Windows 7 OS.very clean and auto adjusts to whatever Window Color (The transparent bar color) that you choose using the Personalization Control Panel. Accordingly, multiple themes (i.e. XP's DQSD) aren't really necessary. Please see attached samples. This theme OVERWRITES your current theme.css and is more of a hack than using the traditional theme selection---yes, I was lazy this time. ;) Feel free to adapt it or make it better and resubmit to the list. If the attachments in this post aren't available in your reader, they are here also: http://vysa.net/dqsd.zip Hopefully, Charlie or Kim will put this on the main page soon! It's important to note that this theme is only for Windows 7 running in Smaller 100% DPI mode and not the default 125% DPI.call me old fashion! ;) See Remarks inside theme.css file for more details. The good news is I have it working. The bad news is it can be difficult to remove if the installation screws up in a certain way. See notes below!!! The steps I came up with avoid some Windows 7 security checks without disabling them altogether. I will list the general steps, not every Windows UAC Confirm this step message. Note that I use TweakUAC to suppress most of them anyway. 1) Download the dqsdx64-4100-beta.zip package to a location you will remember. :-) 2) Right click the dqsdx64-4100-beta.zip package and select Properties. At the bottom of the dialog there may be a message Security: This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer Click the Unblock button. Click Apply then close the Properties dialog. 3) Repeat Step 2 above and VERIFY THAT THERE IS NO SECURITY MESSAGE 4) Create a temporary folder for easy Command Window access - I used C:\Temp. Unzip the dqsdx64-4100-beta.zip file (keeping folder names) into C:\Temp. 5) Navigate to C:\Temp\DQSDx64. Check a couple of .JS files and verify that the files do not have the Security message in their Properties (see step 2). 6) Create a new desktop shortcut - Target: CMD.EXE ; Name Command Window 7) CREATE A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT. IF THE INSTALLATION SCREWS UP THE DQSD CLOCK SCRIPT ERROR WILL MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO REMOVE DQSD. THE EASIEST FIX IT IS TO DO A SYSTEM RESTORE. 8) Right click the Command Window shortcut created in step 6 and click Run as Administrator 9) In the command window navigate to the installation folder C:\Temp\DQSDx64 (or where the Unzipped files are). 10) Type SETUPX64.CMD - follow the prompts. 11) When install is complete, with no errors (Hope!) you will have to right click the taskbar and select Toolbars twice before Quick Search appears. NOTES: There is no entry in Programs and Features to remove/uninstall DQSDx64. I could not find one in the install folder either. Also, once you have turned the toolbar on by right clicking the TaskbarToolbars any attempt to turn it off causes Explorer to restart with DQSD still there. Additionally if the installation has javascript errors in the CLOCK.JS (?) for whatever reason, it is virtually impossible to delete the install folder in order to start over/reinstall, even when booting to SAFE MODE. That is the why the RESTORE POINT above is important. If the install fails - you can restore your system. Should an error crop up in the future, the only thing I can think of off-hand is to boot to a command prompt an delete the installation folder manually. Whew I hope I got all that right! Re: [DQSD-Users] Windows 7 RC 64 Bit Install Help needed
Another possibility is some sort of standalone application that could be hot-key activated (that's fairly straightforward), and have a small window that could be parked down in the lower corner of desktop. But a Vista/Win7 Gadget is probably a more obvious fit, though would impose more limitations on what it could do in terms of popping up additional windows, etc. I'm afraid I'm fully committed to Win7 at this point, even though it has meant no DQSD for me. It wasn't an easy choice, I can tell you. I do have DQSD loaded in my Windows XP Mode virtual machine on Win7, but that's not all that helpful when I use applications there in RAIL mode. I wish I could help with the development. I could live with a gadget as long as Windows+S still brought it to the foreground and gave its edit box focus (maybe even pasted the current selection or clipboard contents in there...). I'd also love the searches with popup windows to continue to work. (Like mwd /popup used to, and the newer, unreleased, df search does.) Ideally, though, I'd like to have its edit box always be present so that I could navigate to it via mouse, too, as it is on the Taskbar in current Windows OSes. I realize that that may be too much to ask for, though. This is the *only* thing that makes me hesitant about Windows 7. Oh, there's a readme? I'd forgotten :-) g Crashes feel bad, but they can be caused by some minor glitch. Let's see if we can debug it at some point, and figure out how bad it really is. Be happy to, but it may have to wait a bit. Probably until at least the RC, just so we don't have to worry as much about them doing something to invalidate our work on it. And besides, I'm a bit buried right now. BTW, the problem exists on 32-bit as well, so it isn't 64-bit specific. Re: [DQSD-Users] DQSD Install Problems - Vista 64
Actually, in many ways, Win7 is better/easier than Vista. I'm really looking forward to it being released. But for applications like ours, it's really a challenge. I've had to mostly stop using DQSD. Not what I wanted, I miss it every day. But it crashes explorer in Win7, and I can't run it off the terminal server without running a full desktop session. And I'm using TS RemoteApps for most things these days. I'd really like to see us have a Vista/Win7 gadget for this. It would get us out of the UAC issues, get us off the taskbar (where MS doesn't like anyone else to play), and give us some version neutrality. But while I don't think it is a huge developmental hit, it's way more than I can do any more. Re: [DQSD-Users] DQSD Install Problems - Vista 64
Cool, I didn't know that. I was worried that we might be facing *another* port to AMD-64 :) No, no worries there. There are a very few things that one or the other does slightly differently, and probably only the Intel compiler knows what they are. AMD64 completely caught Intel by surprise, they were trying to push everyone to Itanium. And when AMD came out with a very fast, very compatible, 64-bit processor that MS agreed to support, Intel basically had no choice but to clone it and play catch up. They've done a good job of that, but AMD had seriously eaten in to their server business for a while. No, you don't want to do that; the setupx64.cmd batch file is the 64-bit version of the 32-bit dqsd-.exe installer. They don't complement each other, it's either-or. You're right, I realized that my systems all have weird legacy stuff hanging around from my early testing days of this. The key to Bill's problems were the requirement for full administrative privileges, I'm sure. (I _thought_ that was called out in the readme, but maybe not. Have to look.) And the requirement that the setupx64.cmd file run from the same drive letter as your system drive. (or, more accurately, as your %programfiles% drive.) Sorry to hear about Windows 7. We could look into what's breaking, I wouldn't give up so soon... :) Well, it's going to RC soonish, from the sounds of it. I had it on build 7000 (the widely available public beta build) on a machine that was an update from Vista where it was working. It loaded fine (but the colours are all different again, so we need to deal with that), but as soon as you clicked on it, Explorer crashed. Couldn't even unload it - the attempt would crash it and it would reload with explorer. As I mentioned, the colours are all different in Win7, so we need to either recreate the work we did for Vista (not hard, but might be a bit of a nuisance because the bar is a lot taller by default), or come up with a way to better handle this on the fly, picking up our colours from the environment. This is especially the case in Win7 since the task bar changes colour and transparency along with the window theme. (Oh, and the bar also does the Aero thing just like window boarders do if you have an aero theme selected.) But Win7 is the death knell of the task bar as we knew it. It's changed. A lot. I still think that the way forward is a Vista gadget. This is MS's official way to add this kind of utility to Windows and they're less likely to break it than the taskbar. Also, the server version of Win7 is 64-bit only, and this may well be the last and final 32-bit client version. So we need to move to 64-bit as the core if we're going to run as an Explorer DLL. Re: [DQSD-Users] comx /dilbert access denied
Yes, I've reloaded after changing the comx file. Heck, I've rebooted. But this is Vista, with UAC on, so fussy. It was working until comics.com changed everything, and still works in non-comics.com areas. Shawn - if you can re-write it, I'd certainly appreciate it. The ability to easily add additional comics would be a nice touch. That being said, is the access denied message you're receiving similar to the one I've attached to this message? If so, welcome to my office-based hell. I started getting this message doing any comx query after a windows policy update on my office computer. comx still worked fine on the WindowsXP machine I had at home at the time. Kim -- this may be where you come (back) in to the conversation --- if they're seeing the same thing, it's the issue I was trying to explain I was having several months ago, and could no longer get (for instance) comx to work properly on my machine at work. There's something in the configuration of internet access, Windows XP, or some policy therein that prevents the comx.xml script (and, perhaps, others as well) from working as they should. Instead, I see the error message I've attached to this note. I no longer have a Windows machine at home, so that's why I have no way to test the changes I've made to the comx.xml file. I am fairly confident they work, though, as I made similar changes to my comx.php program, which I specifically wrote to run on my web server so that I could still get a single page with all my comics on it from my machine at work (and, as a bonus, can also get from any non-windows [thus incapable of running DQSD] machine). :) comics.com did change the entire layout of their site on November 3, and all of the comics hosted there stopped working (including dilbert, which changed a bit more radically than the rest). As a result of those changes, I rewrote the portion of my php program that fetched comics from comics.com, and it now works. The changes I made to comx.xml mimic the changes I made to my php program... that said, they should work. :) I've also sent the comx.xml to a friend of mine that was able to use DQSD and comx on his computer before, and I'll let you know if he has any problems with this new update. anyway... I've rambled on enough here. attached is the error screenshot from my work machine (where comx.xml doesn't work, nor has it for several months) -- Shawn, Charlie -- I'd appreciate your input on this thread as to whether that's the same message you're now seeing... And if I add in a second or third set of holidays, by adding them to localevents.xml, then they work just fine(well, after I fixed the theme file). But what if I want to add additional events, and have them colour coded based on the type of event. So, for example, I might want to add my wife's birthday to that local events file, and have the xml list it as type birthday. Can I then get it to display in a different colour based on the xml type? And if so, how to do it? Charlie. http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum_id=8601 - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista
Correct. Users running Vista will need to take the provided files and substitute them for localsearch.css and theme.css. Our installation should simply put them into the dqsd directory. Actually, the localsearch.css should be renamed to localsearch_vista.css before we make it available to folks so that it doesn't overwrite their own version. Those who already have localsearch.css will want to merge their customizations in with the provided css file, and then name it 'localsearch.css'. In my working with these, I found it best to copy the files to my own directory, make all the changes, and then copy them back under \program files\quick search deskbar. Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista
Kim - I agree, I thought I should have been able to get this whole thing to work with just theme.css. But some things just wouldn't take right and it ended up looking ugly. Specfically, the button wouldn't change colour, and a couple of other minor things. I'm not at all sure which one overrides the other. Maybe this could be done entirely in localsearch.css? I didn't actually try that scenario. But definitely theme.css alone wasn't sufficient. I confess, this was just me poking around, no real knowledge about what was happening where. And a lot of trial and error (which is a PITA with UAC turned on, I can tell you!) I don't by any means think these are definitive versions. Just my best guess by the time I gave up at 1 AM this morning. g The one thing I'm sure of though is that it is WAY better than any of the existing themes in Vista. Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista
Hi, Kim. Yes, my localsearch was empty before I started. The one thing that simply would NOT change in theme.css was the on the button. It stayed doggedly black, which doesn't work on a very dark grey background. I'll play around a bit more in a couple of days, when I have some time, and maybe I can get it all back to where it is done in theme.css. If I can figure out what is going on with the chevrons. I agree, that would be best. Then we simply ship the theme_vista.css plus the two bmp files, and folks can manually copy the theme_vista.css to theme.css and be done. Weird... I'll try and figure something out, but as I said, CSS isn't my forte. Nor mine. I wonder if there's a decent online reference for it. I'll have to look around. It's all a nuisance, of course, since I don't have a 64-bit dqsd to work with and only have one machine running 32-bit Vista. All others are on 64-bit. Give me a few days to poke around. I can probably sort something. Now that I've gotten pretty much everything looking at least reasonable, I won't have so many variables to deal with. I probably made too many changes at once and lost track of something. Thank goodness for gvim - doing all this editing in notepad would be seriously painful. Charlie. - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. Yeah, that works. But you can't use the right click menu to change themes. But since that doesn't work in Vista anyway, I guess that's not too important. (Permissions problem with UAC turned on.) You're right, it's going against comics.com. But I've cleared the browser cache (both 32bit and 64bit ie), and definitely replaced the comx.xml. And reloaded with !, of course. And via the menu. [DQSD-Users] x64 Edition version 3.1.9.1 available
Please contact me off-list if you would like a version of DQSD that runs on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. Thanks to the outstanding efforts of Kim Gräsman we have a DQSDTools.dll file that is 64-bit and works in x64 Edition. I've put together a crude batch file install for it and I'll provide the whole thing to those who need it. The mid term goal is to create an msi that can be used to do the install, and a longer term goal would be to have a single, platform intelligent, msi that would give us a single install for both platforms. But all that will have to wait while our day jobs get done for a bit. For the moment, this rough and ready batch file is all I could slam out over the weekend. It isn't particularly bright, and doesn't give you a choice of where you want to install DQSD -- it's going in %ProgramFiles% whether you like it or not. ;) Of course, it's just a batch file, with local variables -- change the batch file if you need it somewhere else. RE: [DQSD-Users] x64 Version, please?!
Yes, Kim, I have tried it. :( The problem is that explorer.exe, and thus the desktop and task bar are 64 bit. You can't use a 32-bit extension to a 64-bit app -- 64-bit apps can't call 32-bit dlls, and 32-bit apps can't call 64-bit dlls. So even if the hooks are there, they're 64-bit hooks, and can't talk to the 32-bit DQSD. If DQSD were a standalone app, it would work. As you say, the vast majority of 32-bit applications work just fine. There's a known workaround for context menu extensions (right mouse click stuff like WinZIP) that allows one to run the 32-bit explorer.exe, but it doesn't replace your desktop, only opens a separate window for Windows Explorer that runs in the WOW64 subsystem (the 32-bit subsystem, IOW). If you need references/pointers to appropriate developer level docs, I can probably help, but I am NOT a developer, though I have written C code when I absolutely had to. But it was a long, long time ago. You might find some info that will help.. http://www.mail-archive.com/dqsd-users@lists.sourceforge.net/ Got it in one, Monty, thanks! Changed OneNote to autostart for this particular project I'm on that I'm using it a lot for. And it got itself loaded before DQSD got there. I only saw it after the crash, since that was the first reboot after the change to OneNote. So I changed the hotkey to Win-Q for QuickSearch in preferences.js, and all is well and happy. --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: New Crystal Reports XI. [DQSD-Users] 64-bit version?
With the pending release of the x64 version of Windows XP and Server 2003, is there any chance of a version of DQSD that will run on x64 Windows? I confess, I'm not willing to move to x64 Windows as my primary workstation until I have DQSD working there. --- SF email is sponsored by - The IT Product Guide Read honest candid reviews on hundreds of IT Products from real users. Actually, you can prove this to yourself. Click Allow Active Content to enable dqsd. Now, type ? into the search window, to bring up help bingo, it prompts you, again. RE: [DQSD-Users] DQSD 3.1.9 BETA-1
Something else going on there, then. Thats the way it 3.1.8 behaves here, certainly. I admit, I have downloaded but not yet installed the 3.1.9 beta. That would have been exactly what I wanted, except it didnt work. First of all, as soon as I approved dqsd, I got an error about being unable to load the enhanced keyboard or something. It said that some combinations of hotkeys might not work. Then, when as you suggested, I entered just a question mark as the search, I got an IE Script Error message. -- Paul From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Charlie Russel Sent: Thursday, December 02, 2004 2:59 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [DQSD-Users] DQSD 3.1.9 BETA-1 Actually, you can prove this to yourself. RE: [DQSD-Users] Fix for XP SP2 Problem
The Rev Chuck Baker states: I downloaded the comx and racetv searches and they both worked for me. and my calendar works too. and I do have SP2 installed. so if other people are having problems with these searches it is probably because activeX is disabled by default in SP2. But you can enable activeX through the internet options panel. No way would I consider enabling ActiveX on my desktop globally. Especially since it's nearly impossible to run as less than local admin. That's a recipe for quietly having a zombie some day, or even a root kit installed. I'm willing to let a specific application (ie, DQSD) run one or more ActiveX components on my desktop, but it stops there. If we can't find a more long term solution to the problem, I'm quite willing to either give up the calendar (a minor loss, for me personally), or click twice during logon, and if/when I open help. An annoyance, but hardly life altering. A root kit on my machine would quickly become life altering. So count me in favour of releasing a version with rolled up fixes, with or without a more long term solution to the SP2 problem.
