The Cinch part number is P-2404. If you want a cable connector like
what is on the cable, the suffix is CCT. If you want a chassis mount
type, the suffix is AB. This is the type with the little angle brackets
to mount to the chassis.

Newark has the chassis (AB) version in Cinch, p/n P5404AB, and Mouser
has the cable (CCT) version in Molex, p/n 385415404.

I have the noise blanker in my R-4C and I find it very effective for
certain types of electrical noise. It does nothing for atmospheric
noise but, somewhere in my neighborhood, is a noise generator that is
very intermittent. The noise blanker knocks it down by two and a half
S-units whenever it appears. It's pretty impressive.

Unfortunately, the noise is so intermittent that I have no clue what it
is or where it is. It comes on a few times per month and usually lasts
for less than an hour. (Well, probably more often -- I'm not on the air
24x7.)

Nonetheless, in this admittedly narrow area, the Drake noise blanker
really works and I wouldn't care to part with it..

Having used the noise blankers in the R4C, TR-7, TR-7A, R-7, and R-7A, I can
say that they were not intended to suppress atomospheric noise, QRM, etc. and
do not in fact do so. They were, however, intended to reduce the effect of
pulse type ignition noise from cars, lawn mowers, etc. but fortunately, I am
relatively free of these.

found any of them to be of much use, if any. Most of these are/were
designed for pulse type noises, which, depending on your location and
application may or may not be needed.

That's what a Noise Blanker is for -- pulse type noise, electric fences,
ignition noise, power-line noise, your neigbors old touch controlled lamp,
and the like. They won't rid your audio of hiss, miscellaneous band grunge,
thunderstorm static, etc. because these tend to be glops of noise rather
that pulses of noise.

The blanker in the TR-7 (NB7A) is very good, and the blanker in the R-4C is
phenomenal.

Practically speaking. Are they worth it? And,...outside of mobile
operating, what noises are they effective?

In my opinion, yes. If you've ever suffered throug the power company
repeated telling you that the s-9 buzzsaw running on your receiver isn't
their fault, you'd understand why :) Again, pulse noises -- ignition, power
transformer arching (not in your radio, at the power pole), unfiltered
electrical devices controlled by triacs, etc. But they won't necessary get
rid of everything -- it depends on the blanker characteristics, pulse width
of the noise, filter width and characteristics ahead of the blanker, etc.

 Someone also may wish to
discuss other noise reduction alternatives such as the ANEM which
 el34guy mentioned.

DSP noise reduction devices tackle a different problem (there are DSP-based
noise blankers, but that's a different beast. It doesn't help much to
blank a noise pulse in the receiver's audio chain -- it needs to be done
BEFORE the noise pulse gets to the AGC). These basically reduce his
and clean up or reduce some other forms of non-pulse noise. They can take a
noisy 75M band at night and (at least on strong signals) give you much
quiter copy. The end objective should always be to improve Signal to
Noise ratio. Sometimes they do that, and sometimes they don't.

Nothing is perfect :)

Those are for the DC connector. You make a good point. The 10 pin
AC connector in the AB version is VERY difficult to find. Cinch
doesn't make it at all any more, and I don't think Molex does
either. The cable version P-310-CCT is available from Newark.

Oh...now I am REALLY confusedI should have known better than stray
into technical areas.

I have a power supply that matched the TR7...so I assume it was the
PS7.I want to use the DC out from the PS7 to run another rigso
that's the plug/jack/recepticle/whatis that I asked about...and
obviously the pin out.

If those are not available, I'm open to suggestions on how to make use
of the supply.

Thom -

Not all that complicated. I have to admit my first answer was a little
discombobulated, making it look harder than it is!!

A. There are three cables out of the PS-7 power supply

  1. AC power cord ending in a three wire plug to plug into a
standard power outlet.

  2. Control cord, ending in an S-310-CCT connector. This is to
plug into the back of the TR-7 and includes two wires that go to the
Power switch in the TR-7 to turn it on or off. Pins 1 and 3 are tied
together in the TR-7, and Pins 2 and 4 are tied together in the TR-7. A
switch to connect Pins 1 and 2 together will turn on the PS-7 Supply.
Other pins are used to control the fan in the TR-7, the and connect the
Mute line and and ALC line from an external linear amp. The mating
connector appears to only be available in the cable type with the
back-shell, Cinch P-310-CCT.

  3. DC output cord, ending in an S-2404-CCT (or equivalent).
Pins 13 and 15 are the Positive (+) 13.6 VDC and Pins 12 and 14 are the
Ground (-). Don't ask me why we have those pin numbers on a 4 Pin
connector.. I have no idea, but that's the way they are numbered.
This connector will mate with either a P-2404-CCT (cable version with
back shell) or a P-2404-AB (chassis mount version with mounting ears).
The pins are not connected together at the connector end. Separate
wires are run from the supply to each pin.

Bottom line is, if you short Pins 1 and 2 of the Control connector
together with a piece of paper clip, you'll have ~30A of 13.6VDC at Pins
13/15 (+) with the return via Pins 12/14 (-).

OK?

what is the AB version?
Never heard of that. I've seen these with backshells
that allow wires out from the back or the side

The AB version is the chassis mount with Angle Brackets, the little

Re: [drakelist] Noise Blanker discussion

2007-05-11 Thread LeeCraner
The comments on the TR4_/R4_ blanker also apply to the TR7_/R7_ blanker:
great for pulse noise, ineffectual for atmospherics. The TR7 blanker was
designed during the days of the Russian Woodpecker and was amazingly effective
against it. The best classic rig for noise control I've used was the Atlas
350XL;
had a blanker for impulse noise and a limiter for atmospherics (at least
that's my recollection; haven't used one since switching to the TR7 twenty some
years ago, hi).

I read the review, interesting. Have been using the gap.. same as the ant
co...Hear It in line module for 2 years now. It is made by BHI, also and
brought into the us ,via gap. With the early rigs, drake ,Collins, etc this
module is fantastic. Both on ssb and cw operation It performs as well as the
dsp on my proIII. The in line module has all its preramitors adjustable and you
can tailor it so sharply its hard to believe what it can do to a audio signal.
BHI has been the leader in this field for a number of years, would like to try
it up against the ANEM module, can't imagine the ANEM doing a whole lot more
than the hear it. ,and for 200.00, hard to beat. Using the twins with the
hear it ,is any day as good as the pro, using the Icom dsp.
I just thought I would mention about the gap, cause Iam so satisfied with
it.the best adition I have made to the twins.
 thanks for reading.

Sounds good Dale,

Your comments are some of the information I was looking for. I have the
noise blankers in both my c Lines and the tr7 I own, but to get the
most dramatic effect in noise reduction it seems like the next level
upgrade is one of these dsp devices.

For 150-200 bucks it does sound worth it.

Thankyou, 73

David,
I can honestly say that at my QTH, I can not live without the TR7 NB. I
get racket from who knows where in the summer. Without the noise blanker
a good signal is lost in the crud. Every NB that I have had (TR3 with
34-NB, B twins and TR7) have done good for me. BTW the noise is not in my
house or it would be fixed.

Hi all,
I would like to start a thread regarding the various noise blankers
Drake produced over the years. I think I've had most of them. One in a
TR6, R4C and a TR7A. Never put one in my Tr4C since I never found them
usefull. The TR7a has one, and I never use it. I have to say, I never
found any of them to be of much use, if any. Most of these are/were
designed for pulse type noises, which, depending on your location and
application may or may not be needed. These blankers usually sell for a
lot of money or Epay, and seem to be coveted items to many.
Practically speaking. Are they worth it? And,...outside of mobile
operating, what noises are they effective? Someone also may wish to
discuss other noise reduction alternatives such as the ANEM which
el34guy mentioned.
Thanks to all for your anticipated responses !!

I would say for impulse type noise, like my neighbor's electric fence, the
Drake blankers are superior. In fact, I am on the hunt for one for my TR7
so I can use it out here. Without the blanker (which I always sold with the
rigs I used to buy, fix, and sell, not so with most nowadays), this one I
have is a bother to listen to. Anyone got one to sell?? I have several of
the dummy boards, and should have kept one of the noise blankers, I know,
but I didn't need one in town and let them all go. Now that I have gotten
to move to the country, I find a need for one again.

Bottom line is, if you short Pins 1 and 2 of the Control connector
together with a piece of paper clip, you'll have ~30A of
 13.6VDC at Pins
 13/15 (+) with the return via Pins 12/14 (-).

Since those two pins have 120v on em I use a 6pin male plug,The two
end pins are shorted internally. Those two pins go into the 2 pins
needed to turn it on,on the 10 pin plug.
The two pins that need to be closed on the 10 pin plug and the 6 pin
plug, shorted pins are on the ends so the plugs only have those two
connections between them...hope thats clear?? Mark the two plugs with
some whiteout so you get em in correctly. To get the DC out I
soldered a#10 insulated wire to a tab that slips in the end of the DC
out put plug and thence to the load...

I read this three times and it may or not make sense..If it doesnt I
will draw a pic and scan it for whoever needs it..

The file is a PDF document that lost it's .pdf extension along the way
somewhere. IE7 seems to open it fine, but if you're using Firefox as your
browser, you need to save this file, then add the .pdf extension back on.
Once that's done, Acrobat Reader will be able to open the file. To do that
in Firefox, you right-click on the My March 07 QST Review for BHI DSP
link, choose save link as, choose a place to save it, and modify the file
name from ANEMReview.htm to ANEMReview.pdf.
