Re: [Dspace-tech] How to configure statistical reports?

2007-03-07 Thread Claudia Jürgen
Hello Nina,

did you follow the instructions in docs/configure.html#statistics?

Do you got log files in your [dspace-install]/log?

To enable statistics

1. change all the perl skripts in your
[dspace-source]/bin
* stat-general
* stat-initial
* stat-monthly
* stat-report-general
* stat-report-initial
* stat-report-monthly

Especially change these lines:

$dsrun = /dspace/bin/dsrun;
$in_directory = /dspace/log/;
$out_directory = /dspace/reports/;

Supposing you got DSpace installed in C:\dspace, you should have
something like this:

$dsrun = C:/dspace/bin/dsrun.bat;
$in_directory = C:/dspace/log/;
$out_directory = C:/dspace/reports/;

2. run ant init_configs

3. run
C:\dspace\bin\stat-general
C:\dspace\bin\stat-monthly
C:\dspace\bin\stat-report-general
C:\dspace\bin\stat-report-monthly

   dspace.log=/dspace/log/

   # the name and url of the service being reported on
   host.name=localhost
   host.url=http://localhost:8080/dspace

   and then from dspace/bin dorectory I have run those perl scripts.

 it seems as if your log files are not evaluated. The item count is done
 via the database.

 Did you change dstat to point to the directory where the log files
 reside (see prior mail, you had an URL there not a directory)?

 first, please use the dspace-mailing lists and not my private address
 for dspace related questions. Otherwise people with the same questions
 are not able to follow up the threads.

 # the log directory to be analysed
 http://localhost:8080/dspace
 this line refers to the directory where the logs of the dspace
 installation are stored.

 And then
 I typed the following commands
 C:\dspce\bin dsrun stat-initial

 But it gives classnot found error. Is it because I have dspace on Windows
 XP operating system?
 Naturally these are perl scripts no java classes. As you can see in the
 documentation, they are simply invoked via [dspace]/bin/name, provided
 that you got perl installed.

 exerpt from dspace docs
 _

 # Run stat analyses
 [dspace]/bin/stat-general
 [dspace]/bin/stat-monthly
 [dspace]/bin/stat-report-general
 [dspace]/bin/stat-report-monthly

 Note that Perl needs to be installed in order to run the statistical
 reports.

 Claudia Juergen wrote: Hi Nina,

 the base documentation for the statistical reports resides in the
 documentation:
 dspace/docs/configure.html#statistics

 For further information run:
 [dspace]/bin/dsrun org.dspace.app.statistics.LogAnalyser -help
 [dspace]/bin/dsrun org.dspace.app.statistics.ReportGenerator -help

 You must edit the scripts in [dspace]/bin
 stat-general
 stat-initial
 stat-monthly
 stat-report-general
 stat-report-initial
 stat-report-monthly

 In order that statistical reports are generated regularly and thus kept up
 to date you should set up the following cron jobs:

 # Run stat analyses
 0 1 * * * [dspace]/bin/stat-general
 0 1 * * * [dspace]/bin/stat-monthly
 0 2 * * * [dspace]/bin/stat-report-general
 0 2 * * * [dspace]/bin/stat-report-monthly

 Hi All,
 In the dspace documentation there is mentioning of statistics. I have
 installed dspace1.4. But when I login as admin and click on the
 statistics link I get a message saying” there are no reports available”

 What should I do to enable statistics report? Is there any documentation
 on how to setup statistical report.

 Thank you in advance
 Nina

Re: [Dspace-tech] Are you using the DSpace History System?

2007-03-07 Thread Richard Jones
Hi Mark,

 This is a survey to see if anyone is actually utilizing the existing
 History System in production. If you are using the history system,
 would you please be kind and respond with a quick sentence on how
 your applying it?

I am not currently using it, but bringing it up is timely because I'm
reaching a point where what I am being drawn towards is the necessity of
an audit tool for certain system activities. I haven't had time to
evaluate what the history system can do for me in that regard, but if
anyone is planning on making changes to it, I'd be interested in being
involved in some way, shape, or form.

Let me give you one or two examples of the kind of auditing that I need:
as users add/remove files over time from their item as they prepare it,
I need to track what was added/removed and by whom when (multiple users
can work on a single item in our system). Similarly for licences.
Also, administrators perform many tasks on items before they hit the
public repository, and a navigable audit trail on item activities which
can actually be interacted with would be of great benefit.

Cheers,

[Dspace-tech] Doubts

2007-03-07 Thread Sonia Almodovar

Hi,
I have some problems.
First, ¿Is addon´s like patch? I understand that addon´s are new
funcionalities for DSpace and I must implement it with patch, mustn´t I?

When I have configure Handle in my DSpace, I follow this steps:
1. I changed in dspace.cfg this line:

handle.prefix = 2316

My boss give me this number because he got it in the past.

2. I ran this comands:
[dspace]/bin/make-handle-config
[dspace]/bin/start-handle-server
[dspace]/bin/update-handle-prefix 123456789 2316
I´ve tried change the comands order but I´ve not gotten my dspace is right.

In the Handle-server log file appears:

2007/03/07 11:55:12 CET 100 class net.handle.server.HdlUdpInterface:
Error setting up server socket: java.net.BindException: Address already in
use
2007/03/07 11:49:53 CET 75 class net.handle.server.HdlTcpRequestHandler:
Exception processing request: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
org/dspace/core/ConfigurationManager

How can I do for handle is right?

Thanks.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Doubts

2007-03-07 Thread Richard Jones
Hi Sonia,

 2. I ran this comands:
 [dspace]/bin/make-handle-config
 [dspace]/bin/start-handle-server
 [dspace]/bin/update-handle-prefix 123456789 2316

 In the Handle-server log file appears:

  2007/03/07 11:55:12 CET 100 class net.handle.server.HdlUdpInterface:
 Error setting up server socket: java.net.BindException: Address already
 in use

This suggests that your handle server (or some other process) is running
on the ports that the handle server is intending to use. These are 2641
and 8000 by default. You want to check to see if the handle server is
running:

ps -ef | grep handle

(in linux)

and see if there is anything already bound to those ports:

netstat -l

(again, for linux only)

 2007/03/07 11:49:53 CET 75 class
 net.handle.server.HdlTcpRequestHandler: Exception processing request:
 java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/dspace/core/ConfigurationManager

This looks like a classpath problem, but it's not immediately obvious as
to why this might happen. I would be inclined to fix the first error
first, and see if this one just goes away.

 How can I do for handle is right?

Also, have you sent the sitebndl.zip file generated by
make-handle-config to CNRI? This won't affect your problems here, but
you won't be able to resolve handles locally until CNRI have updated
your record.

Cheers,

OK, so you have several instances of the handle server running already.

kill `ps awx | grep -i 'net.handle.server.Main' | grep -v grep | awk

There is no hard limit. The only limitation will be in the amount of
hardware you have available. The largest known DSpace repositories hold
in the order of hundreds of thousands of items.

Hi Claudia,

the items viewed..e.t.c I think the stat-general is not reading the dsapce log

Claudia Jürgen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello Nina,

did you follow the instructions in docs/configure.html#statistics?

Do you got log files in your [dspace-install]/log?

To enable statistics

1. change all the perl skripts in your
[dspace-source]/bin
* stat-general
* stat-initial
* stat-monthly
* stat-report-general
* stat-report-initial
* stat-report-monthly

Especially change these lines:

$dsrun = /dspace/bin/dsrun;
$in_directory = /dspace/log/;
$out_directory = /dspace/reports/;

Supposing you got DSpace installed in C:\dspace, you should have
something like this:

$dsrun = C:/dspace/bin/dsrun.bat;
$in_directory = C:/dspace/log/;
$out_directory = C:/dspace/reports/;

2. run ant init_configs

3. run
C:\dspace\bin\stat-general
C:\dspace\bin\stat-monthly
C:\dspace\bin\stat-report-general
C:\dspace\bin\stat-report-monthly

 And then
 I typed the following commands
 C:\dspce\bin dsrun stat-initial

 But it gives classnot found error. Is it because I have dspace on Windows

 Naturally these are perl scripts no java classes. As you can see in the
 documentation, they are simply invoked via [dspace]/bin/name, provided
 that you got perl installed.

 exerpt from dspace docs
 _

 # Run stat analyses
 [dspace]/bin/stat-general
 [dspace]/bin/stat-monthly
 [dspace]/bin/stat-report-general
 [dspace]/bin/stat-report-monthly

 Note that Perl needs to be installed in order to run the statistical
 reports.

 Claudia Juergen wrote: Hi Nina,

 the base documentation for the statistical reports resides in the
 documentation:
 dspace/docs/configure.html#statistics

 For further information run:
 [dspace]/bin/dsrun org.dspace.app.statistics.LogAnalyser -help
 [dspace]/bin/dsrun org.dspace.app.statistics.ReportGenerator -help

 You must edit the scripts in [dspace]/bin
 stat-general
 stat-initial
 stat-monthly
 stat-report-general
 stat-report-initial
 stat-report-monthly

 In order that statistical reports are generated regularly and thus kept up
 to date you should set up the following cron jobs:

 # Run stat analyses
 0 1 * * * [dspace]/bin/stat-general
 0 1 * * * [dspace]/bin/stat-monthly
 0 2 * * * [dspace]/bin/stat-report-general
 0 2 * * * [dspace]/bin/stat-report-monthly

 Hi All,
 In the dspace documentation there is mentioning of statistics. I have
 installed dspace1.4. But when I login as admin and click on the
 statistics link I get a message saying” there are no reports available”

 What should I do to enable statistics report? Is there any documentation
 on how to setup statistical report.

 Thank you in advance

 I am not currently using it, but bringing it up is timely because I'm

 I need to track what was added/removed and by whom when (multiple users

 Also, administrators perform many tasks on items before they hit the
 public repository, and a navigable audit trail on item activities which

A decent version control system for DSpace is a must. Not only should
one be able to track the changes over time to each document, but one
has to be able to consult and revert to previous versions. This
functionality is taken for granted with any decent Enterprise Content
Management (ECM) platform. In the hope that they might provide some
pointers, I have uploaded a couple of screenshots of a document's
`Status History' available within the IeB ECM system (powered by
CPS-3.4/Zope):

(http://indica-et-buddhica.org/sections/repositorium/desired-features/versioning-system)

The current incarnation of CPS -- Nuxeo 5 -- is an open source Java
app.. It is possible that some of the version control code could be
modified by the DSpace community:

Re: [Dspace-tech] Are you using the DSpace History System?

2007-03-07 Thread Larry Stone
Have a look at the wiki page about the new history system:
http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/HistorySystemPrototype

It's already written, and in fact the project is over so I won't be
doing any more work on it. If the Event patch gets adopted, it will
remove the old history system, but open the way to let sites install
this one as an add-on. Right now it only exists in the wiki and on the
patch queue.

The old history system wrote some very dodgy records; some outright errors,
other records that cannot be correlated to actual events, and it used
database IDs as identifiers instead of anything persistent. (iirc, one of its
worst sins was using Handle-like identifiers with database-IDs in the suffix).
So, if you're actually going to use the data you're better off with the new
system. It also includes an RDF database (Sesame2) so you can make
custom queries, which sounds like it would help your use case.
