[Dspace-tech] change handle-prefix

2009-09-01 Thread Lewatle Phaladi
Hi all

I did updated my old handle prefix from handle database and make changes
to dspace.cfg file as well as handle configuration file just fine.

The problem is, when you check the copy of Dspace web Interface I just
pasted bellow, like

http://hdl.handle.net/1900/7178

http://hdl.handle.net/123456789/7178

can somebody help on changing the URI so it can peak 1900 instead of
123456789

[Dspace-tech] very interesting tomcat caching issue

2009-09-01 Thread Debashree Pati
Hi all,

Recently, we did branding of a site and created browser specific style
sheets (style.css, style_ie6.css, style_ie7.css, style_ie8.css).

File sitemap.xmap contains code that applies the right style sheet to the
site depending upon browser type/version.

Each time we viewed the site using Firefox, style.css gets applied as
expected.

However, the story is different when browsing with different versions of
IE: style sheets are not getting applied as expected.

For example, if we first viewed the site using IE 7, style_ie7.css gets
picked up correctly. Next when we open the site in IE 6 and

IE 8, instead of getting their version specific style sheets they get
style_ie7.css.

Restarted Tomcat and viewed first with IE 6. Guess what? All subsequent
viewing in IE 7 IE 8 get the style_ie6.css.

Decided to experiment this with the stock theme: Kubrick. Results were same
as above.

Please check this out yourself by viewing some existing or test collection
with Kubrick theme in different IE versions.

Found an earlier discussion on this issue in Feb'09 by Eric Luhrs

http://www.mail-archive.com/dspace-tech@lists.sourceforge.net/msg06870.html

No one has mentioned any solution other than the hack suggested by Eric.
Checked with him recently and he still hasn't found an

alternative.

Hoping to hear some expert ideas. We really need to get this fixed for our
user base.

Re: [Dspace-tech] xmlui and itemCounter

2009-09-01 Thread Jason Stirnaman
Hi. Sorry to resurrect this old thread
(http://www.mail-archive.com/dspace-tech@lists.sourceforge.net/msg07602.html
), but based on Stuart's response and our own experience in 1.5.2, the
Collection Strength display in XMLUI is not updated immediately after an
item is added to the collection, i.e. I have to run [dspace]/bin/dsrun
org.dspace.browse.ItemCounter via cron instead of it being invoked at
ingest. Are there plans afoot to change this behavior?

Thanks,
Jason

Hi Wayne,

The xmlui ignores the webui.strengths.show setting in dspace.cfg and
delegates
the decision whether or not to show the strengths to the theme that
you are
using. In the latest version of Dspace, the default theme is enabled to
show
the strengths.

If you have webui.strengths.cache set to true (which it must be for
them to
appear in the xmlui) then you will need to periodically run
[dspace]/bin/dsrun
org.dspace.browse.ItemCounter to have the strengths updated.

Thanks,

Subject: [Dspace-tech] xmlui and itemCounter

I wanted to activate the item counter in the xmlui interface and,
although the
dspace.cfg file claims that the webui.strengths parameters don't apply
to the
xmlui interface I found a post that suggested otherwise.
So, I set show and chache to true and the counts appeared;
however, I then noticed that a recent submission was not reflected in
the
counts.
So I ran ItemCounter to update the totals in cache.
Curiously, I now have an up-to-date count on the community page and the

collection page but when I am at the home page, looking at the array of
all
communities and collections, this particular collection is still
showing as
zero (0) instead of one (1).
All other counts are consistent from home page, community pages and
collection
pages.
Does this make sense to anyone?
Has anyone else experienced this?
Any advice?

This 'caching' mechanism was added because of the time it can take a large
installation to calculate the strengths when the community page listing all
the communities and collections is shown.

If you just have a small installation, you could set the cron job to run
quite often to update the counts.

The situation could possibly be improved by writing an event consumer that
updates the count table when a new item is added or mapped. If anyone wants
to write this, it would make a good addition to the upcoming 1.6 release.

[Dspace-tech] Adding description to batch loaded bitstream

2009-09-01 Thread George Kozak
Hi...

I am having a problem with batch loading descriptions with my bitstreams.
In the contents file I have file.pdf\tdescription:File description

When I do the import, it works fine, but when I view the item display,
the description does not appear. If I go to the Admin function and
bring up the item under Edit, I see the description, but it doesn't
appear on the item display.

Am I doing something wrong?

Hi George,

That issues was just for XMLUI. JSPUI should work fine.

Have you modified much of your DSpace installation? It seems strange that it
must be accepting the description OK as you see it in the edit view, but not
in the normal viewing mode.

[Dspace-tech] Handle Server Process Stays at 100% CPU

2009-09-01 Thread pennington
OK, this is a strange one. I just completed a pretty difficult upgrade of our
DSpace instance from 1.4.2 to 1.5.2 and everything was working pretty well. I
guess it still is. You can see the result here:

http://dlynx.rhodes.edu

My big outstanding issue came after I rebooted the server to give it one last
kick of the tires before calling the whole thing done. After the reboot,
everything came back up, but the Java process that is the Handle Server (the
thing that knows to serve up http://dlynx.rhodes.edu/jspui/handle/10267/2423
when you hit http://hdl.handle.net/10267/2423 to view an object) has stayed at
100% CPU.

Oddly, during the process of getting the 1.5.2 dspace.cfg correct, I was
restarting Tomcat and the handle process over and over again, and the handle
process never did this 100% CPU usage thing. Only after I shutdown the machine
and cold-started it did this 100% CPU issue appear with the handle process.

Currently, if I kill the process and then restart it using our standard
/archive/dspace/bin/start-handle-server it will race up to 100% and stay there.
While the high CPU usage is a concern, it doesn't appear to affect the
resolution of handles or DSpace or anything else, other than just the
unnecessary CPU cycle. I can find nothing in any of the logs (handle server,
tomcat, or DSpace) that would give a clue as to what is going on.

Here is what the handle processes look like with the ps command:

Unless you have manually adjusted pom.xml, you will probably still be using
an older version of the handle server. This has been fixed in 1.6, and you
can make maven use the later 6.2 version by editing the relevant line in
[dspace-src]/pom.xml:

 dependency
groupIdorg.dspace/groupId
artifactIdhandle/artifactId
version6.2/version
 /dependency

This is likely to be the handle bug that hits on the first of the month some
times, where it constantly tries to roll over a log file. Upgrading to
version 6.2 of the handle server usually fixes this. Once you have adjusted
the pom.xml file, re-run mvn / ant etc. You should notice maven download the
new jar file.

AFAIK the hosting company are looking in to this as there have been some
problems with the site at their end.

Author and Subject browse pages seem to work when there is no item in
the system. Once an item is submitted and archived, browse pages for
Authors and Subjects generate this error message
(http://vtext.valdosta.edu/xmlui/browse?type=author) on both XMLUI and
JSPUI. On the other hand, By Issue Date and Title pages display just
fine.

Browse Author page displays when there is a value parameter in the
URL. (http://vtext.valdosta.edu/jspui/browse?type=authorvalue=Oguz,%20Fatih)

I ran index-init but it didn't seem to help. No change has been made
in Browse Settings section in dspace.cfg file.

Dspace (with embargo patch 1.5.2) runs on Solaris.

Any suggestions in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Fatih

Re: [Dspace-tech] Adding description to batch loaded bitstream

Stuart:

We did modify the CSS quite a bit, but manually entered descriptions come
across just fine. If nothing seems obvious to you, then I will experiment
on my test server to see if I can figure this out.

 Hi George,

That issues was just for XMLUI. JSPUI should work fine.

Have you modified much of your DSpace installation? It seems strange that
 it
must be accepting the description OK as you see it in the edit view, but
 not
 in the normal viewing mode.

No, I am using JSPUI. Is this patch specific to XMLUI or does it also

 Hi George,

I am having a problem with batch loading descriptions with my
 bitstreams.

 Are you using XMLUI? See:

This has been included in the upcoming 1.6 release.
