[Dspace-tech] displayed-values in search and browse results

2009-10-06 Thread Virginia Knight
I have customised my DSpace input form to show the user different values
for certain fields from what is stored, using stored-value and
displayed-value pairs. So the cataloguer sees 'English' for the language
but 'en' is stored.

Is there a straightforward way to get 'displayed' rather than 'stored'
values to come out in search/browse results as well as on the input form?
(I don't mind if the 'stored value' appears on the full record - I'm
thinking of the previous screen). Has anyone an example of how they did it
which they would be willing to show me? It would be helpful not only for my
own use of DSpace but also because I may in due course be advising others
on setup.

Jessica Lindholm raised this problem at:
http://www.mail-archive.com/dspace-tech@lists.sourceforge.net/msg02444.html
but she was using DSpace 1.4.1 not 1.5.2.

to the search or browse listing and click on the next record in the

Re: [Dspace-tech] OfficeSWORD

2009-10-06 Thread Debashree Pati
Hi Stuart,

I have two questions:

1. Any idea why an upload to your SWORD demo site (of the template
provided at your blog) using MS Word 2007 Article Authoring Plugin might
fail with the following error message? :

The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error

I had done a successful submission of the same on Sep 21st.

2. How do I resolve an error I get when I attempt an upload of your
template (with URL modified to our DSpace instance containing the patches
for .docx ingestion)? :

The remote server returned an error: (415) Unsupported Media Type

dspace.log:

I have applied both the ds-316.patch and docx-ingester.patch as provided by

Appreciate your timely help.

ERROR org.purl.sword.server.DepositServlet @ X_NO_OP value is null

(found something similar in your post in jira
http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-199 about the error of X_NO_OP being
true and yet the deposit being successful. Why are we getting null instead
of true? Not sure if this affects our deposit and if this leads to the
following error messages or not)

I think this can be ignored, and perhaps should be edited in the DSpace
SWORD implementation. DSpace is complaining that there is no value set for
the X-NoOp header, yet the specification only states that client MAY set
this value. I'd argue therefore that DSpace should not be reporting this as
an error.

No there isn't. The records displayed have no notion of their order in the

Re: [Dspace-tech] SMTP server for mail question

2009-10-06 Thread Larry Stone
Like a lot of things, the answer is that depends. The SMTP server
is usually an MTA (Mail Transfer Agent), or post-office server, that
is expected to be able to receive mail as well as send it. However,
when you're part of a big site like my.edu, you can often get away
with setting up an MTA on your local machine that sends out mail with
a return address of u...@my.edu, so it does _not_ have to be open to
listening to the world at large. It sends the mail out, and if it
bounces, those bounce messages go to the MTA for my.edu.

I like to set up a local service on the same machine hosting DSpace
just so that outgoing mail never gets lost because the other machine
or the network is down. It can be a simple outgoing-only Sendmail (or
equivalent Postfix, exim, etc) that stores and forwards outbound
messages. It fixes up headers so the mail appears to come from
my.edu, bounces go back to my.edu, and thus it wouldn't need to have
port 25 open because nobody should ever be talking to it. In fact,
that's probably a good idea, since if you did have it open you'd have
to know how to configure it so as not to relay SPAM.
