[Dspace-tech] Dspace Metadata Customization

2012-06-15 Thread Lewatle Phaladi
Hi All

I have added new metadata field and I would like to use them
automatically when I create new collection, currently when I click on
create new collection, the following metadata fields appear Name, Short
Description, Intoductory text, Copyright etc., I would like to add my
newly created metadata field to this list so when I create a collection
it will have additional field I created.

Lewatle

Hi Lewatle,

this is not currently possible in any DSpace version until now because
only items have metadata, not communities or collections. However,
this will very likely change in the upcoming DSpace 3.0, where it

Actually, 8.2 went EOL at the end of last year, so it wouldn't hurt to
make the official 'requirements' be at least 8.3, even if 8.2 happens
to work.

For the next release, I would even be tempted to say that the official
minimum is 8.4 (it's already highly recommended). It may work with 8.3
/ 8.2, but 8.3 will be EOL before the following major DSpace release,
so it would be prudent for people to be on at least 8.4 anyway, with a
recommendation for 9 and above.

That is already so in the 1.8 docs.

I agree with bumping up recommended minimum to 8.4 for the reasons you listed.

FYI, Postgres 8.4 is in both RHEL 5 and Debian Squeeze (the
most-likely-to-be-installed-at-this-time versions of these distros).

[Dspace-tech] Submitting to Dspace by reference

2012-06-15 Thread Wellaway, Ian
Hi,

Does anyone know that if you submit to DSpace by reference, and subsequently
change the file (overwrite it with another for instance) after the item has
been entered into the archive, does this produce an error?

We tried it and it seems OK but we're worried that DSpace may notice that the
checksum doesn't match the file contents at some later point or after some sort
of integrity check.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Cheers

Ian

Hi Ian,

I believe by submit to DSpace by reference you mean registering
bitstreams
(https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC18/Registering+(not+Importing)+Bitstreams+via+Simple+Archive+Format).
I haven't used it in production, but I played around with it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that checksums are
used for anything else other than the checksum checker
(https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC18/Validating+CheckSums+of+Bitstreams).
This is also how you can get a list of these changed files.

In any case, if your file chages, you should deregister it (--delete)
and register it again. You may also look at --replace, it might do the
same.

Helix,

Yeah, it looks like the bug report you filed[1] describes the issue I'm
talking about; the default behavior makes sense to developers, but not
to users.

I guess DSpace is still evolving, and with each release it's getting
more and more user friendly. Hopefully some more polish comes to the
out-of-box experience, possibly by way of some modifications to the
default XMLUI theme, or maybe a default (configurable via dspace.cfg)
collection view. I've seen at least one XMLUI example where recent
submissions were in the side bar, and the main content stressed that you
actually have to choose a browse type in order to see the collection
contents. We don't want to lose users because they're confused and
can't navigate our repositories. Furthermore, Discovery's faceted
search was suggested as a solution, but I'm not entirely sure it
addresses this particular usability problem (though it is a cool way to
navigate repository data).

Cheers,

Alan

That sounds strange. Discovery was merged only in DSpace in 1.7, so if

I don't want to install an older version with an unsupported patch to

Re: [Dspace-tech] recently submission in homepage

2012-06-15 Thread Priya S
Many thanks Helix, its fixed now. But its displaying the individual data
files instead of data packages. I understand from Dryad that one of the
filterQuery settings is location:l2. This specifies the search should only
return items from tne l2 collection(which is SOLR's designation for the
data package collection.)

So in dspace-solr-search.cfg, the settings are like this,

solr.browse.default.filterQuery=location:l2
solr.default.filterQuery=location:l2

Sorting is controlled by some other parameter in dspace.cfg?. I am just
trying to get something from the URL which you sent. But not
succeeding...everything looks fine when I compare the settings. Could you
please point out where I did the mistake.

Should I do anything with this in dspace.cfg?.
#recent.submissions.sort-option = recentpkgs

Thank u once again.

 We've been keeping the core Dryad code reasonably up-to-date. It's
 currently using 1.7.2, and we're preparing to move to 1.8.2. Unfortunately,
 Priya's code is based on an earlier version of Dryad, which is still using
 a non-standard version of Discovery.

 Priya, is there anything unusual happening in the log files when you load
 the home page?

 You should be able to add some logging statements to see what SOLR query
 is being used, to verify that it is searching the correct content. Start by
 looking at SiteRecentSubmissions.java.

Hi Helix,

It worked after making the below changes in dspace.cfg

recent.submissions.count = 0
# it was 5 earlier
event.dispatcher.default.class = org.dspace.event.BasicDispatcher
event.dispatcher.default.consumers = search, browse, discovery, eperson,
harvester, versioning
# the above were commented out earlier

In dspace-solr-search.cfg,

#(with the port number)
solr.search.server = http://localhost:8000/solr/search
# this was commented out and added the same in maven config/settings.xml
without the port number.

Finally, rebuilt the source, restarted the tomcat, then it started working
fine.

Hope this helps.

 Just for the interest of time-travelers who will come to this thread

Re: [Dspace-tech] Adding advanced-search to collection view in mirage

2012-06-15 Thread Jose Blanco
helix84, Thanks for your help with this. I'm going to show the librarian
here on Monday what we can do with discovery. But I wanted to get your
opinion of actually getting the advanced page in the collection page. I
tried to do it by starting to make some changes to the
CollectionViewer.java and I had to copy a lot of code from
AdvanceSearch.java and did not quite finish, because I'm hoping discovery
will give us what we need, but it did seem like it's not an easy thing to
add the actual advance search option to the collection page. Any thoughts
on this?

Thanks!
Jose

 OK, I'll add it.

  I have another question. When I looked at the interface it gives me a
  widget from which I could add filters. But is there a way to make it
 look
  more like the advance search page. You mentioned doing this:

  You can restrict search by adding a scope parameter:
  /discover?scope=123456789/123

  (Where do I do this?)

 It's an URL, just add it to your server name in your browser.

  So you have 2 options:
  1) Add a link like this
  2) Add 2 radio buttons and a submit button

  (WHere do I do this? )

 Make a link (a href=/discover?scope=123456789/123xyz/a).

 Please keep dspace-tech in CC (Reply to all).

Oh, so you actually want the advanced search _form_ in the collection
page, not just a link to the advanced search form?

I think the code is in SearchFacetFilter.java, but I haven't looked at
how hard it might be.

2012-06-15 Thread Josefina Perez Alvarez
Hi Helix84,
Thank you very much for your answer, and have much success on DSpace!

I forgot to say that:
- www.ourDomain.mainDomain.edu is under IP x.y.z.w and have a specific
content
- our DSpace installation is under IP a.b.c.d,

- tomcat defines default path to xmlui and declares oai, jspui, and so on
in docBase
- tomcat is running on port 80 following the steps here:

http://thelowedown.wordpress.com/2010/08/17/tomcat-6-binding-to-a-privileged-port-on-debianubuntu/

then, if we call http://a.b.c.d we receive our dspace installation in xmlui.
But, my brain doesn't get to visualize what is Tomcat configuration and
what is dspace configuration, or even ourDomain configuration to call
http://x.y.z.w/friendlyNameForOurDSpaceApplication
and receive the content of http://a.b.c.d

Where I declare the directory? Like a virtual host on Tomcat?
But, the test below didn't work:
 Host name=www.ourDomain.mainDomain.edu   unpackWARs=true
autoDeploy=true
xmlValidation=false xmlNamespaceAware=false
appBase=/dspace/webapps
!-- Trying aliases --
AliasourDomain.mainDomain.edu http://www.ourDomain.mainDomain.edu
/Alias
AliasourDomain.mainDomain.edu http://www.ourDomain.mainDomain.edu/
friendlyNameForOurDSpaceApplication/Alias

!-- Define a new context path for all DSpace web apps --
[...]
/Host

Can you help to clear my mind?

Thanks in advance,
Josi Pérez

 Hi Josi,
 if your Tomcat is listening directly on port 80, your dspace.cfg
 should look like this:

 dspace.hostname = www.ourDomain.mainDomain.edu
 dspace.baseUrl = http://www.ourDomain.mainDomain.edu
 dspace.url = http://www.ourDomain.mainDomain.edu/dspaceX

 But it's more likely that you have Apache HTTPD in front of Tomcat, in
 that case you should have the port Tomcat is listening on in
 dspace.cfg:

 dspace.hostname = www.ourDomain.mainDomain.edu
 dspace.baseUrl = http://www.ourDomain.mainDomain.edu:8080
 dspace.url = http://www.ourDomain.mainDomain.edu:8080/dspaceX

  We don't have access to define mainDomain, but we have contact with the
  administrators from ourDomain.
  The initial configuration failed because the URL above stayed fixed and
 we
  lost the handle when navigating by itens.

 Your local handle server is usually referred to by IP, so unless also
 your IP changed, this shouldn't break. If the IP changed, all that
 should be necessary is to change all instances of bind_address in
 your config.dct to the new IP and restart your handle server (if I
 remember correctly).

OK, what I wrote should apply (the first case). Also that part about
updating handle server configuration.

 then, if we call http://a.b.c.d we receive our dspace installation in xmlui.

Nothing so complicated. You can define path in Context path
attribute (just like all the other webapps - oai, jspui etc):

Context path=/friendlyNameForOurDSpaceApplication
docBase=/dspace/webapps/xmlui debug=0
reloadable=true cachingAllowed=false
allowLinking=true/

Makes sense?
