Re: [Dspace-tech] why vanilla?
I think there is a big difference between projects and installations. So thats way to vague a category to be of use to people needing info on DSpace installation procedures. I think that there should be a clearly defined location on entry to the site that contains tutorials and presentations on dspace installation/customization that go on in DSUG meetings, including those that are located at other sites. But something like this already exists http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Adspace.org+tutorial On Dec 14, 2007, at 9:16 AM, Mark H. However it might be useful to show some of the range of possibilities, so that people can get a realistic idea of which kinds customizations are easy, which are costly but readily doable given sufficient resources, and which are downright difficult. Also, is there a central directory page of popular (finished) patches that add visible functionality? That would be another way to help people evaluate DSpace w.r.t. their requirements, by (among other things) showing how much work is involved in different kinds of alterations. I don't visit the wiki often enough, but my impression has been that work-in-progress and completed projects are jumbled together, probably because when projects are completed they just stay on the page and stop getting updates. Regularly moving released mod.s to a released projects page would help to make it clear what you can just plug in now and what you may be able to help develop, which is an important distinction depending on your needs and resources. -- Mark H. This is a good application of Categories in the wiki -- brand project pages with either Project-In Progress or Project-Released, e.g. Then the summary pages would be automatically generated. See http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Category to learn all about categories. The use of categories looks somewhat haphazard right now; we really need a meta-page explaining how the tags are supposed to be used and offering guidelines to creating such things as project pages. Re: [Dspace-tech] why vanilla?
I get many requests from organizations evaluating DSpace wanting to know the level of effort to install right out of the box, without making any customizations. Ah, I see. That makes sense. Given your experience, passion and know how it would be great if you could work with us in a positive fashion. I may not be quite the right person, as when I was a DSpace newbie I was running on a somewhat nontraditional setup (Mac OS X Server). However, I'm happy to offer what I can. (On the other hand, it may turn out useful to know that a librarian without sysadmin training can learn to do this, so...)
