Re: [HCDX] 1730 kHz Greek AM MW (X Band ++ Transaltlantic DX)
Do you think this video is showing a Greek station as a certain catch?. Just an indeterminate style music is heard, but no identification or comment. Why do you suppose this is from Greece?, If you don't get an ID state the log as tentative, or presumed. I personally don't believe this comes from what you say it comes. [HCDX] Update on Antartica: LRA36.
This morning I spoke to the Base Esperanza and I talked with Mirta, a station announcer. She told me that the transmissions are sporadic and they are performing maintenance on the station to put it on air in early 2013. I left her with the feeling that even the shortwave broadcasts will not be regular, as broadcasters and technicians are getting ready to leave the ice continent, and budge up a new staff that will be working in the coming month of February in LRA36. The idea is to leave the radio in perfect condition for the next Antarctic campaign. He also mentioned that the station would come out with a power of 1 kW and they currently broadcast in the FM band for the inhabitants of the base and its surroundings. via Jorge Villavicencio, DRM Radio Argentina (www.drmradio.com.ar), in Condiglist YG via Horacio Nigro (translated edited). [HCDX] Radio St. Helena
I have been in touch with the staff down there. They have an Interim Station Manager as Gary Walters went back home to the United Kingdom. Radio Saint Helena will be shutting down, according to Ralph. He says Our Final Broadcast will be on the 25 December to coincide with our opening on the 25 December ’67. This will make us 45 years of broadcasting. The AM signal on 1548Khz with 1KW will be shut off for good. As I understand it, at some point, a government funded radio station, operating on FM will launch. Ralph tells me that the Shortwave broadcasting mast has been dismantled by Cable Wireless, but he's talking to local ham operators to see if they can lash up something for their final broadcast so they can get on Shortwave. NO promises though. That being said, if the Shortwave makes it on December 25th at all, it is likely to last time it will ever make it on air. My voice was featured on the last Radio Saint Helena shortwave broadcast and even if they don't make it on SW this time, I will likely have my voice used on the local MW broadcasts. I just thought I'd pass the word. Feel free to pass this to other DX lists and other folks who might be interested. [HCDX] Online Utwente SDR receiver updated. Now continuous coverage!!!
August 17: Updated the system (SDR firmware and software) for continuous coverage of 0 to 29 MHz! Also the user interface got a few new features: memory channels and a squelch. http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/ On this page you can listen to and control a short-wave receiver located at the amateur radio club ETGD at the University of Twente. In contrast to other web-controlled receivers, this receiver can be tuned by multiple users simultaneously, thanks to the use of Software-Defined Radio. This site, which in 2008 was the very first WebSDR site ever, was finally reactivated in July 2012 after an interruption of more than 1.5 years; see here for the full story on that. It is now using a small Mini-Whip antenna. Unfortunately, there seems to be some strong local QRM on 80m much of the day (although not always). We have not yet found the source. Comments on the antenna's performance are welcome, either by e-mail to pa3fwm AT websdr.org and/or typed into the chatbox at the bottom of the page. (website via Horacio Nigro, Uruguay, Aug 19) Very nice set up!!!, for me this is a major milestone in radio receiving! Now, if I only had one of this type in my area, it would be fantastic. I think these online facilities will be spreading for use in every continent and subcontinent areas or countries. A good idea to implement by radioamateur associations or club in each country. This concept is by far better than Global Tuners. No lags in tuning vs. audio recovery. Better selectivity... No need to load specific software for perusal of remote SDR. [HCDX] Experimental WebSDR 0-19 MHz) at PA3FWM's home has been taken offline.
This experimental WebSDR at PA3FWM's home, covering 0 to 19 MHz, has been taken offline, as announced a few days in advance. There are several reasons for this: * The nearby system at the University of Twente is finally available again, at http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901. * The antenna at the university seems to be much better, judging by the number of users there and here over the last few days. * Running this system occupied equipment that I would rather use for other things (such as further development of the hard- and software). * I continuously needed to be careful about possible thunderstorms and disconnect the antenna in time. * I never intended to run such a system permanently from my home anyway; I only did so because of the antenna problems at the university site. For now, the frequency range of the system at the university site is limited to 8 bands of 600 kHz each. However, it is planned to change it to general coverage of the HF spectrum in the future, like this site used to have. Thanks everyone for using the test system over the past year or so! Within the QTH: my order to my family was to not connect cellphone chargers to the power at night. [HCDX] Uruguay SW DX news
Hola DX friends,, Here again enjoying my vacation days in the Atlantic coast of Uruguay at Barra de Valizas, Rocha, Uruguay, as I usually do on summer every year. I am carrying my Kenwood R600, 100 m of cable as a longwire, extended in comma shape, for space restrictions towards Europe, and by the moment with unterminated resistor, mostly on bushes.. The highlight in the SW side of my DXing here is, as for these couple of days, the log of 6074 CXA3 LV de Artigas, Uruguay. URUGUAY 6074, CXA3 LV de Artigas, Artigas. 1219-1234 on Jan 11. tks by man about political issues in Uruguay, ads in long strings, with many of them of local origin, also ID as CX118 La Voz de Artigas. According to reliable sources, it appears that the SW b/csts from RNW will be until December or perhaps a little more. They might run a frequency for the Caribbean from a transmitter in Guyana. These decisions will be announced between October and November. Regarding the Spanish section is likely to be smaller, this will be known better in next September or October. Horacio A. of this first era. Finally the first broadcasts as Radio CWOA began, and in 1929 became CX6 Radio Oficial, SODRE. Re: [HCDX] OE10M ON 14255u
I was part of the CW1GM gang who activated Punta del Este,Uruguay. Unfortunately, the condx this time were mostly poor towards the Northern Hemisphere. The DXSummit showed contacts being reported between N.America and Europe and Asia, with no QSOs across the Equator. This effect was experienced during our local evening,1700 to 2000 UT. I remember Index A was reported 11. The strawberry of the cake for me came at the very end of the radio party, when I made QSO with CE3BBC, OM Hugo, from Santiago, Chile a friend from the Latin American group of DXers, also a SWL as we are. Most of the DX performed at CW1GM was made on PSK31. This a nice event, commemorating for us 100 years of Marconi´s visit to Uruguay) in 1910, he had MMO on the air, built in 1908. As usual, these activations are a nice party, not depending of condx to guarantee great moments of friendship and radio activity!! 73 Horacio A. [HCDX] Homenaje a John Bryant, renombrado DXista norteamericano
The Zenith Trans-Oceanic, the Royalty of Radios: The Royalty of Radios (Schiffer Book for Collectors)(1995). Otro sobre el cruce del Polo Norte,Dangerous Crossings: The First Modern Polar Expedition, 1925 (2000); y sobre el gran sabioHeinrich Hertz, the beginning of microwaves: Discovery of electromagnetic waves and opening of the electromagnetic spectrum by Heinrich Hertz in the years 1886-1892 (1988), entre otros de Arquitectura e historia general.
[HCDX] Sign of modern times... audio cassettes ar becoming scarce...
Sign of times... audio cassettes begin to be scarce in shops overhere in Uruguay, So. America. The down side of this is that mp3 recorders with line in input capable of recording directly from the radio set are still very uncommon in the market, and I believe this also happens globally from my search on the Web. I asked in a specialized audio shop for mp3 recorders, yesterday and the model they sell is around USD 500,oo. That's intended for professionals but not for more general use. I used a Zen Creative Nano I bought in 2005 in Spain but it became unusable when it felt from my hands a few months ago. Other Creative mp3 with recording line-in capabilities I know of had problems caused by its display generating noise in the recording. Horacio A. Re: [HCDX] RNW commentary for WRTH 2010
What Andy writes: In the absence of anything significant to review, a mere ten pages are devoted to current receivers this year, and even some of those are low-cost portables that are likely to be of very limited interest to WRTH readers. However, there is a look at ‘Cold War Classics’ – professional receivers of bygone years, which includes the Racal RA17 that I used when I worked at BBC Monitoring. ...may well be a sign of the modern times for DXing in general. But in my opinion, this receiver round-up review has forgotten the Degen DE1103 which has became a good pet for FM SW DXers for at least the past 5 years with an excellent cost-performance relation. Also despite the models mentioned in the low-cost portable, the Ultralight niche among MW DXers is under expansion and currently flourishing, thanks to the work and promotion made by Gary DeBock, all the people gathered in the ultralightdx Yahoo reflector and the support given by DXer.CA and Colin Newell, since its beginning two years ago. Receivers like the SRF 59 (the first ULR revelation), the PL300WT, Sony T615, Grundig G8, D96L and the latest PL380 are encouraging many oldtimers who renewing their interest for MW DX, with a minimal expense. [HCDX] My reception of 11092.5 RSH, Nov 14
Just returned from four familiy's house in the seaside resort of El Pinar, 30 km East from Montevideo, capital city of Uruguay escaping the noise at home. I could get the RSH broadcast beamed to India SEAs fairly well from 2000, but it was tough to get a readable pitch for the music and voice announcements on my Kenwood R600 connected to a wire on the ground 50 metres beamed to the east. I am not -and have never been- good recognizing titles for modern musical themes but there was a song by James Taylor at 2055. I didn't stick to the entire broadcast, checking it from time to time while I was attending other family affairs. The worst signal was for the European target period. At 2333 I could identify a Abba mx theme. At the time I found nice condx to AIR stations on the 60 mb so QSYed there. From 2356 to 0200 4775 Imphal, 4920 Chennai, 4940 Guwahati, 4970 Shillong, 5010 Thiruvunanthampuram booming, 5040 Jaypore, besides listed 15 KW from China 4220 Qinghay PBS, Tajikistan 4765 Dushanbe, made my weekend more interesting than RSH, with very nice signals. 73 Horacio A. [HCDX] portable mp3 player recorder with line in
I am looking from info about mp3 players/recorder with line-in recording, suitable for DX recording . I had an Creative Zen Nano Plus, simple and straightforward and relatively cheap. But it fell to the floor and it didn't worked anymore, despite efforts to revive it reinstalling the firmware. A Web search in general provides somewhat outdated data. [HCDX] St. Helena Is. logged on MW!!! and also on ULR
Wow... what a night St. Helena Is. logged on MW!!! I got very happy when I heard my 16th Department on ULR with my Eton E-100, sitting on my backyard on a warm late evening that resembled more summertime than Fall... URUGUAY. 1180 LV de Artigas, 0113, with play by play soccer and mentioning Oribe (street name)... para todo el Departamento de Artigas (Nigro, Uruguay, Mar 29). The remaining Departments (Uruguay Geographical divisions total 19) that remain to be heard with ULR are: Rivera, Flores, and Salto. -- At 0330, my wife was already at bed, I was preparing to do the same, my listening post is at my bedside. I started to search with my Kenwood R-600 and first got CB118 Radio Corporación from Santiago, Chile. Good! Also checked with the E-100 and positive!. A new Chilean added to the ULR log. I continued and stopped at a carrier on 1548. Great!!!, this is the first time I get a offset European frequency signal in Montevideo. In the dark and with my flashbulb I opened the WRTH 2009... looked at the most powered station in the listing, there appears: R. Sawa Kuwait 600/300 kW and Grigoropol 500 kW... Signal was enough strong to get a woman with talks in English at 0325 I checked on the E-100 and it was there too. But signal was fair and faded out for 5 minutes. On the E-100 it was evident more QRM from a Brazilian station on the R600 the carrier was more evident due to the nice narrow filter on this last receiver. Suddenly a short tune melody was heard and I thought... this sound is familiar: it certainly was the ID musical signature for R. St. Helena, the one we usually heard every year at their annual St. Helena Day!!!. The audio degraded for several minutes, but there was still a carrier detectable, while on E-100 there was more activity from the 1550 channel. At 0400 the signal faded-out. While I was in this special thrilling moment I tried -in the dark- to connect my mp3 to the E-100, something I didn't expect to do earlier, a mix of cables from different earphones, line in/out... the flashbulb the logbook, trying to keep the WRTH open... it was too late to get the significative part and it wasn't recorded. I still cannot plug the recorder to the R600 since it has no line out audio level. So I regret to not bear a recorded proof of this St. Helena log. But this forces me to further keep trying on this offset frequency in the future... R. St. Helena on MW and without Beverage in a suburban quarter in the capital city...and also on an UL!?? Yes it's possible ! Incredibly possible. Recap log: ST. HELENA 1548 R. St. Helena (p), Jamestown, 0325. Carrier and English talks by woman, detected with my Kenwood R-600, (+15 m randomwire, 9:1 balun + ferrite balun in series). Faded out till 0335 when back. R. St. Helena well known ID musical signature strikes my ears!!. Also checked with UL Eton E-100 getting the signal. In the interim, the UL had more QRM from 1550 UNID Brazilian. Degraded and faded out at 0400 with a short peak at 0353, with apparent choir music. (Nigro, Uruguay, Mar 30) --- At this time: By now, I feel a sort of bitter hang-over... it was a short but incredible moment, those that DXing fortunately gives time to time and keep us connected with the hobby for the entire life. But I have no no recording to show as proof and it's a pity. St. Helena and me were alone in a hot romantic affair last night, and it was indeed a pretty young lady. But there's no photo to show just the memory. :( Checked the mp3 this morning and there's no recording for St. Helena... just the 1550 Brazilian and one AM 15-50 ID in Spanish surely from Argentina, (this latter was not hrd on the R-600) I am sure I will be every night sticked at 1458 from now on. I hope it wasn't a propagational extreme coincidence and will have another chance. Very recent reports from Brazilian SWers in the Radioescutas YG tell that at that moment all bands were closed, only local Tropical banders were present, not even a single one on 25m or 31m. They report a similar situation didn't take place since last July. And will be better prepared next time. Re: [HCDX] Uruguay: SODRE reactivated on SW --- also 9620!---
Yes...This seems to be their frequency, according to other monitors in Europe who have measured the signal today. Right now, at 2350 -I'm back home - there's a het on 9620, Radio Esterior de España. From their signal strength and the fq offset from nominal 9620 as monitored locally, this seems to be the same transmitter they had been using till their QRT about 8 months ago. Just a mere 350 watts. The only visible change for this resuming also in the 31mb is that they are not simulcasting CX6 (MW 650) here with classical mx as before -a nonsense in SW with such low power-). This also means that sked is not 24h as before, as they close MW 1290 at 0300. s/on should be 1000. Horacio Wolf-Dieter Behnke [EMAIL PROTECTED] escribió: Horacio Nigro schrieb: More... [HCDX] URUGUAY: SODRE, new names for their stns, but nothing about SW.
For the first time in its history, since their foundation in 1929, the radio stations from SODRE will have their own name, logo and defined programming: CX6- 650 AM is to be named Radio Clásica as it is devoted to classical music. CX 26- 1050 AM will be named Radio Uruguay with information and journalism content. CX38- 1290 AM is going to be named Emisora del Sur with their main program being composed of national music in all their genres, with an aperture to the Latin American world, their programs hosted by musicians, palyers and journalist connected to music. 97.1 FM will be named Babel and with their relays in the countryside, will be devoted to the promotion of jazz, the experimental music, contemporary, fusian and avant-garde. The next step (2007-2009) is the territorial expansión, trying to form a National Network of Relays to effectively cover the entire territory, on their assigned FM frequencies. Investment will be made in new AM and FM transmitters, iming at the technical possibilty of including the local participation of the different communities in the country. (translated from their redesigned website http://www.sodre.gub.uy ) Nothing is mentioned about their SW, and word given from his Technical Manager sometime ago their are in this stage unjustified (for economical and strategic reasons) The three radios are (or will be shortly) webcasted from their website. The launch of this plan will be done tomorrow, Oct 10, by national authorities and the SODRE radio director in a public conference.
