but I will check with N7NG and NN1N.

Thanks Dave for your positive input.

Absolutely... contesters are more in touch with electronic submissions.
They're used to the process. On the other hand, I have 50 qsls from w3lpl -hi!

  Any positive suggestions?

I think something that has not been mentioned much is the recent
feature of certain dx clusters now indicating which spotted callsigns
are LoTW users. By using the un-official callsign list at -

http://www.hb9bza.net/lotw/

...and integrating it with VE7CC's ar-user program, I can now search
and pounce on dx that I'm relatively sure will qsl via LotW. I'll still
pay the price for the exotic cards for the shack wall, but when it comes
to qsl'ing specific band/modes, I'm all for LotW. This new cluster feature
really improves my time management when it comes to pursuing DXCC.

This is not a sales pitch for VE7CC's program (besides, it's free), but
I recommend it.

Charles,

How many of those certs do you really need right now? I believe what you
need most is the ONE cert that you will be using. If you renew one, you
maintain your electronic identity. Then, obtaining additional certs as
needed (if at all) is simple.

Given some of the PKI implementations that I have seen in my work,
this one is pretty easy. The best thing that I have seen that has
been done is the extension from 1 to 3 years...noticed that when I
renewed last week.

Also, with more and more companies, educational institutions,
government agencies, etc moving in this direction, it is a good thing
to know anyway.

Re: [DX-CHAT] Logbook of World

2006-03-24 Thread John Carobine - WB8RFB
I've been licensed for nearly 35 years and only took
up chasing DX seriously about two years ago.

In my situation, LoTW is an indispensable tool for me
to get beyond the basic DXCC award. At roughly $3.00
each (sometimes more) to snag a confirmation, having
the choice of being able to get a card, use a LoTW
confirmation, or get both is wonderful.

Simply put, my budget does not support mass mailings
for all the entities I need to achieve 5 band DXCC
just as one example. When I work a new one, I DO like
to get a card, but after that, for other bands and
modes, a cost-effective LoTW confirmation is just
fine.

I have confidence that any remaining growing pains
with LoTW will be ironed out, but my overall
experience with it has been nothing short of positive.
The QST article published about a year or so ago on
how to set up an account was just the guideline I
needed to get me started. If there is any way to
encourage more DX stations to sign up and submit their
logs, I'm all for it. Perhaps some kind of incentive
offered by the League???

Chuck:

What you got was a notice that you have to renew your certificatation for your
call(s) which has to be done once per year. Likely they have a valid reason for
doing this. I have done it twice so far and haven't found it difficult to do. I
update my log for my one call sign a couple of times per year, and so far LOTW
hasn't turned out to be a good resource for me for getting contacts confirmed.
When I work a station, I usually QSL via the bureau if I want a QSL, and most
people who use LOTW also are good QSL'ers via the bureau.

I have no way of knowing if they will sumbit their logs to LOTW, so I go ahead
and send the card. I usually get their card via the bureau which negates the
need to get credit via LOTW. I have never gotten a single credit for a contact
via LOTW. I have all but 2 countries confirmed now so I don't do a lot of
QSLing any more. The important thing to me is that I am helping a lot of others
get a contact with me confirmed via LOTW. I believe LOTW is a good program for
a lot of people, particularly if they are just getting started. I hope people
will continue to support it.

No seriously I think this will get more
DXers involved. Many overseas stations will now be able to get their WAS awards thus
more DX stations for those of us chasing DX and using LOTW.

Another way to encourage more DX participation would be for the
League to maybe sponsor some kind of yearly competition. Maybe giving awards to
this station working the most DXCC Countries and getting them confirmed on LOTW
in a one year period.

Surely there must be other ways to
encourage more overseas DXers to participate? Any ideas?

By the way I suspect there are more
contesters using LOTW that actual DXers. I think the main reason for that
is they are all using computers and computer logs and it is so easy for them to
submit their log to the contest sponsor and then to LOTW. Whereas some of
the old time serious DXers are not using computer logs. It would be
interesting to take a look at the age of those using LOTW vs those not. My guess is it would show
the younger (HA) guys are using computer logging and the older ones are
not. Unfortunately Im afraid it would take a lot of work to back
this theory up.

Anyway I suspect as time goes on more and
more people will start using LOTW. The real question is what can be done
to speed up the process? Any positive suggestions?

I'm a stamp collector. To use the usual LOTW arguments, it would certainly be easier, cheaper, quicker, just to collect jpeg's of the stamps, rather than the real thing...paraphrasing W3UR, "It would get more stamp collectors involved...would encourage more participation..." Right?

In the time it took to write an e-mail complaining about LoTW, you
could've renewed at least 2 or 3 of those calls. You don't have to love

that the level of security that the ARRL desires comes at a price and
that price is some convenience and simplicity.

My feeling is that if people put as much energy into getting acclimated
