[DX-NEWS] RE:Tracking vessels at sea?
Hello Leo. Is my understanding that the Cavendish Sea is not at sea yet, it is docked at Ushuaia and is do to set sail tomorrow (Feb 18 2005), also note that the site will only list vessels that has submitted a weather report, so if the Cavendish Sea does not submit a report will never be listed. 73/DX de Joe, YV5LIX. http://www.yv5lix.org.ve -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Leon M Foot Sent: Thursday, February 17, 2005 11:50 To: dx-news@njdxa.org Subject: Re: [DX-NEWS] Tracking vessels at sea? [DX-NEWS] Peter I to be postponed till next year
3Y0X Peter I DX pedition Press Release I am afraid we have bad news. At 1 AM local time today we learned that our charter vessel, the Cavendish Sea, had not yet sailed from the port of Comodoro Rivadavia. The Cavendish Sea was to sail to Ushuaia to pick up the Dxpedtion team and their equipment on Friday, Feb 18th. We were to sail before noon. Because they have delayed their arrival until Sunday, and with a projected Monday departure, we have simply run out time. This latest delay on top of numerous previous delays, simply makes it impossible for us to spend a sufficient amount of time on Peter I to justify the DXpedition this year. So, we have no choice but to postpone the DXpedition until 2006. We believe it is essential to allow enough time on Peter I to justify the monetary investment made by the team members, our sponsors, individual contributors, DX Clubs, DX Foundations. After having the first vessel, the Antarctic Dream, default on their contract with us, then the helicopter company default on their contract and then after putting everything back together with an new boat and helicopter on this past Tuesday, the team has been on quite an emotional rollercoaster. Our sincerest thanks to everyone for the encouragement and support you offered us during this time. [DX-NEWS] More on KP1/5
From today's ARRL news bulletin Access to Navassa, Desecheo may require Act of Congress (Feb 16, 2005) -- A bill calling on the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to permit public access to Navassa (KP1) and Desecheo (KP5) islands has been introduced in the 109th Congress. Both islands are under FWS jurisdiction. US Rep Nick Rahall (D-WV) introduced HR 298 January 25, To require the Secretary of the Interior to provide public access to Farallon National Wildlife Refuge, Navassa National Wildlife Refuge and Desecheo National Wildlife Refuge. Such action would open the islands to future DXpeditions. US Rep Richard Pombo (R-CA) co- sponsored the measure, which has been referred to the House Committee on Resources. Rahall sponsored identical legislation in the last Congress. Citing unexploded ordinance and potential danger from drug traffickers in the area, the FWS recently denied a group of Ohio DXers permission to land on Desecheo. The agency has not issued Amateur Radio permits since 1993. Navassa and Desecheo are among the top 10 most-wanted DXCC entities, according to the 2004 The DX Magazine survey. The KP1/5 Project Team, in conjunction with the Lone Star DX Association, is encouraging members of the DX community to contact their congressional representative to urge co-sponsorship and support of HR 298. (Correspondents can look up their nine-digit ZIP Code on the US Postal Service Web site.) The KP1/5 team recommends following up e-mail or USPS correspondence with a telephone call and to establish a point of contact for any followup calls. The KP1/5 Project Web site includes a sample letter to a member of Congress, news updates and additional information about the KP1/5 Project. Representatives of the KP1/5 Team will travel to Washington April 8 to brief lawmakers on the measure. For further assistance, e-mail the project, [EMAIL PROTECTED] The full text of HR 298 is available via the Library of Congress Web site. -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] Who uses the CTY.DAT file?
CTY.DAT is the country file database that is used by various contest logging programs. It lives at http://www.k1ea.com/cty/ I am planning on changing the data source I used to generate the file. This will result in a number of new entries, and will allow me to save some work in not having to maintain two separate databases. There are some possible enhancements I would like to explore. Some of these are already supported by CT and Writelog, but I have not yet thrown the switch in order to maintain backward compatibility. I'm most interested in non-contest logging software that makes use of this database. This could be DX Packet software, general purpose logging, etc. I know that Peter Jennings, VE3SUN uses CTY.DAT in his DX Monitor program (http://www.benlo.com/dxmon.html). I'm sure there are others. Please respond to me privately if you use the CTY.DAT file in your software, or know of software that does use it. I will summarize the information on the K1EA web site. 73 - Jim AD1C = Jim Reisert AD1C, 7 Charlemont Court, North Chelmsford, MA 01863 USA +978-251-9933, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.us -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. Press Release 15th February 2005. Day 17, Feb 15th Cyclone Nancy hit Aitutaki Island late last night, winds were not as severe as Cyclone Meena, so little damage was done, just fallen trees again blocking our exit of the lodges. Yesterday we had a team meeting and decided that due to the cyclonic depression covering the Cook Island area we must think about the safety of the team and after browsing weather charts of the South Pacific it was agreed to cancel the Manihiki Atoll Expedition. A very disappointing decision but safety comes first. The Cyclonic depression has been caused by cold air moving north from Antarctica meeting the hot humid air towards the equator this has caused a huge depression emitting cyclones in the Fiji to Cook Island area. The last cyclone to hit the Cook Islands was 6 years ago and in two weeks we have experienced 2 cyclones with another one approaching us from Samoa. Are we the most unlucky DX Team? 3 cyclones to hit during the time here! It is unfortunate that we could not come here in November the best time to avoid cyclones but money and time off work is not so easy to schedule. I know this will disappoint many who are waiting to work ZK1 North, but I am sure you will understand the reason for our decision. We also received information that many of the Manihiki Islanders were evacuated last week before Cyclone Meena and do not want to go back until the all clear is given for the cyclones. Our antenna systems were taken down last night but will be put up again after Cyclone Olaf has passed by possibly on Wednesday or Thursday. Air Rarotonga evacuated their aircraft up to Aitutaki this morning to avoid the Cyclone on Rarotonga. 73 de ZK1 Team on Aitutaki Island.
