[Dx4win] Version 9 and CW reader

Downloaded and installed the new version...great !

It would be nice to add a link to a CW reader such as getcw in a future
version.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Question

2017-10-20 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK

Hi RIck,

This sounds like an issue with either the radio, cable, or driver. I
can't think of any reason why D4W itself would stop communicating with
the radio other than if perhaps you changed the address on either the
radio or within the software to not match what the other is expecting.
It appears that the default for the 7851 is 8E, you could check
File->Preferences->Radio and make sure the address is set to 8E there,
then note the baud rate there and go into the menu (on my 7600 it's in
the menu "Others" and would be next to CI-V Baud Rate and Address. Make
sure those match.

Other than checking the cables, the only other thing I can think of is
to test with some other software that controls your radio, if you've got
something.

(Sorry about the blank message to the list, my email client sometimes
decides to send rich text which gets stripped by the list. I think I
fixed it.)

flawless operation.
The radio is connected to the computer via a CI-V cable to a USB

Hi Rick,

Which version of D4W are you using? Can you still control the radio
from D4W? You didn't say what kind of radio you're using or how it's
connected, so it's a bit hard to troubleshoot. Can you provide some
additional information? And while it sounds like everyone always says
this ... did you try rebooting?

Hi Mike,

Yes, I did that, but then found that I had to select QRZ Online from the
drop down menu under Data Source at the top. Now it works great. This is a
very nice feature -- especially how you can update and populate the QSO
fields by clicking on one button. Very nice enhancement. Thank you Paul!

Paul talked about all the new features.

I would like to note some long awaited features which I liked most in 901:

-> Auto connect in clusters

-> xml data with QRZ.com plus alt+f3 opens direct the browser to qrz!

-> Separate DXCC application either via LotW either via paper cards.

-> Auto update for files and dx4win.

-> new modes and reports (for the ft8 funs - I hate this mode... :) )

-> new search! Alt+f8 and you can search for data, phone, cw

-> in QSL methods added OQRSd (direct) and OQRSb (buro)

and much more according Paul's email...

Understand Jim thanks.
I'm sure it's been brought up last 24 hrs, so apologies, only get time to
read my emails between meetings/work during the week, and whenever I have
had a quick look there have been 20-30 to sift through on this reflector,
sorry if I've missed it and doubled up.
Appreciate your quick reply.

The DX4WIN Data Updater is for users of DX4WIN 8.05 and earlier. It is not
needed by DX4WIN 9.01 which has a built-in updater.

I believe there are not changes in code on cat control. Only Paul can
say if these are the same files from Jim's site or new ones, so it is
possible to have bugs. I assume you use files from Jim's site for these
radios. don't you? Also please confirm that you have the same settings
in both versions for the 2 radios? Anyone else who has tried Icoms 7300
or 7600?

2017-10-20 Thread Ricardo Navarrete
Im dissapointed too, in fact I'm looking for another logging programm until
a serious release comes.

That is a minor update for me except for FT8 , but after six years ( not
sure if more ) without any update and any information about one, I'm really
sad.

Thanks anyway for the job.

-> Auto connect in clusters

Open tQSL
Select File ->Display or Modify Preferences
Select the ADIF Modes tab
Select each temporary mapping (e.g., FAX -> DATA, FT8 -> DATA, etc.)
and click Delete

If you had temporary mode mappings and/or used a custom mode, you *will*
want to upload all the QSOs that contained custom modes to LotW again.
If you do not upload using the correct mode, any confirmations will be

good for DXCC (DATA) and VUCC (mixed mode only) but the confirmations
can not be used for WAS mode specific (e.g., FT8, JT65, KT9, etc.)
endorsements.

Using F8, search for the placeholder (substitute) mode you used, for
example, FAX. Now go to QSO | Multiple QSO Operations | Set Mode.
You will be presented with a dialog box that allows you to set the
correct mode or submode as needed for all the selected (found) QSOs.

You may also want to clear the LoTW upload date and set the LoTW
upload flag for these QSOs as well. The next time you Export for
LoTW, these QSOs will also be included, the mode field having been
corrected. This is just in case you made an error uploading these
QSOs to LoTW the first time.

If you added mode mappings to the Trusted QSL software, you may want
to remove those too. How to do this is beyond the scope of the DX4WIN

Thanks Paul and the dedicated team - it's all installed perfectly here on W10
with DropBox hosted log-files. All the country totals are correct too.

There has already been mention of the next release - now that the basics are
sorted out, can we expect some real enhancements next time around?
(and the packet filtering bug fixed, too?)

It would be good to understand the road-map, if there is one?  In my mind, the
enhancements offered do not particularly warranty a version upgrade, they're
'point upgrade' features that should have come out a long time ago. I'm really
disappointed by it - the only real benefit for me is the ability to log FT8
QSOs, the rest is superficial. Others may view it differently of course.

I do like DX4WIN for its multiple groups functionality, stability, interface,
speed and powerful searching but we're now in 2017 and people use MMVARI,
FLDIGI, WSJT-X, Clublog etc... I'm sure there is more to come. Modern day
logging software needs to interface with these tools; for a 'paid for' product
I would expect much more than what has been delivered.

I've paid and I'll stick with it because I know it. But probably not for much
longer, I feel I'm being taken for a ride here.

I forgot to mention:

You *will* have to run the "Check Custom Awards" function under
Multiple QSO Operations in order to covert the old DOK award to the
DLD award. See the message I sent out earlier today to the reflector:

[DLD] Deutschland Diplom (German DOK)

Hi Henri,

Sorry for the problem. For some reason, the DOK award isn't in the
Custom Awards database for either DX4WIN 9.01 or earlier versions! I
do not know how this happened. I was planning on updating the
database this weekend. I will make sure it's fixed.

Thanks Paul and the dedicated team - it's all installed perfectly here
on W10 with DropBox hosted log-files. All the country totals are correct
too.

There has already been mention of the next release - now that the basics
are sorted out, can we expect some real enhancements next time around?
(and the packet filtering bug fixed, too?)

It would be good to understand the road-map, if there is one?  In my
mind, the enhancements offered do not particularly warranty a version
upgrade, they're 'point upgrade' features that should have come out a
long time ago. I'm really disappointed by it - the only real benefit for
me is the ability to log FT8 QSOs, the rest is superficial. Others may
view it differently of course.

I do like DX4WIN for its multiple groups functionality, stability,

You can download the installer here: www.dx4win.com/files/dx4w901.exe

The improvements in this release would not have been possible without the
suggestions and bug reports from the beta testers:

Jim, AD1C
Paul, F6EXV
David, K2DBK
Bud, N7CW
Lee, N7NU
Guy, ON4AOI
Kostas, SV1DPI
Mike, W0VTT

With a very special thank you to Jim for his tireless efforts to get the
new data in shape to feed the country database and related files.

Important Note:
This version does not implement the editors for the various databases; this
is planned for the next update.

Callsigns
Support for on-line callsign lookups for QRZ and Buckmaster (HamCall)
Separate menu option to lookup a callsign using a web browser
Callsigns can be up to 16 characters long (up from 12)

Country Database
The country database is now split in two files; country.dat contains the
callsign mappings, country information etc. A second file, usrexcpt.dat
contains the exceptions (overrides) entered by the user. This applies to
prefix/zones/date exceptions for a callsign, QSL manager information and
QSL manager address.
Callsign exceptions and mappings in the country database have now a start-
and end-date allowing multiple date ranges to be specified.
Counties have now coordinates

Custom Awards
Custom awards have been updated to allow for more flexibility in naming
awards and better error checking.
Awards 'codes' can be 6 characters in length (up from 4). The longer values
allow for a more logical organization of the awards avoiding splitting a
single award into multiple awards.
Award 'values' can be 12 characters in length (up from 8)
The abbreviation for an award is shown in the QSO Window; pressing F1 will
show the list of valid entries and their description. The list shown takes
the restrictions for Prefix, Date, Band and Mode into account
When selecting a custom award, an information page can be displayed which
may have an URL for the home page for the award
A new menu option is available to verify and convert the custom award
setting for each QSO; see QSO Window | Multiple QSO operations | Check
Custom Awards.
A new file, awdmap.txt, has been introduced to convert awards and award
values to the new custom awards.

IOTAs
For a new QSO, the IOTA field is set when the IOTA for the entity is
unique. Similarly, the Island field is set for an IOTA when the Island is
unique for the IOTA.
A new menu option is available to check existing QSOs for a valid IOTA and
set the IOTA and Island fields when they are unique; see QSO Window |
Multiple QSO operations | Check IOTAs.
The relation between Prefix and IOTA is stored in a new file: prf2iota.txt
The PopUp menu for selecting an IOTA can be limited to IOTAs by continent
or by Prefix in addition to the full list of IOTAs.
An option has been added to confirm IOTA QSOs using the .CSV file
downloaded from the RSGB; see QSO Window | QSLs | Confirm QSOs using IOTA
file.

Modes
Added many more modes, and a new QSO field to enter a sub-mode. See Modes
for a table of modes and sub modes.
The option to modify the modes for the selected QSOs can also modify the
sub-mode. See QSO | Multiple QSOs Operations | Set Mode.
Added an option, (Alt+F8), to search for generic modes like Phone and
Digital.
A double-click in a summary window uses the generic mode search and
searching using the previous filter will show how that was done.

[Dx4win] Correcting Mode for QSOs made before DX4WIN 9.01

2017-10-20 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Some of you may have used a different mode to log an unsupported mode
in your earlier version of DX4WIN. For example, you may have used FAX
as a placeholder for FT8. If you have upgraded to 9.01, now is the
time to fix these.

How to do this is beyond the scope of the DX4WIN
reflector.

Hi Zoran,

Sorry to hear about your problems. I have DX4W901 installed in
Windows 10 in two different file paths (two computer) and both work
fine:

C:\Users\jr920141\Box Sync\dx4w901\(note the space in the path!)

That is the new Master Callsigns database. It should have been
installed in your SAVE directory. You may need to do the Help |
Update thing in case Paul did not include it in the installation kit.

I have not seen any crashes. DX4WIN 9.01 has a built-in crash
reporter. Send crash reports to Paul, it should be obvious from the
crash reporter how to do this.

[Dx4win] IOTA Checkin DX4WIN 9.01

2017-10-20 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Paul has added a feature to 9.01 to check the IOTA field for all QSOs.
It does a few things:

1. Assigns the appropriate IOTA for QSOs made with a DXCC entity that
is fully contained in a single IOTA group, like Barbados, 8P (IOTA
NA021)

2. Assigns the IOTA Island for any IOTA that has only one island,
like Barbados, 8P (NA021). Note that this will also occur when
importing a log from another program.

3. Checks that the DXCC entity for the QSO is appropriate for the
IOTA assigned. For example, NA021 (Barbados) is not a value IOTA for
a QSO with Puerto Rico, KP4. Note that for USA IOTA, DX4WIN also
checks that the STATE is valid for that IOTA. For example, NA065 is a
valid IOTA for WA, but not for FL.

The IOTA check will not modify any IOTA fields that are already set.
Instead, DX4WIN will report any errors in your log (see below).

You can run the check as follows:

QSO | Multiple QSO Operations | Check IOTAs

You will get a prompt like the following:

Checking IOTA and Island for 153811 QSOs
Are you sure

Click Yes and run the check. Then you may see a window like the following:

80 IOTAs were set
4096 IOTA Islands were set
14 Invalid IOTAs were reported
No Invalid Islands were reported
Look for IOTAMSG: in the QSO notes

Here is an example:

OE4VIE/ANT in Austria, OE
IOTA = AN016, Antarctica
IOTAMSG: Bad IOTA

At one point, the DX4WIN country file thought that OE4VIE was in
Antarctica due to the /ANT at the end. However, he was just in
Austria. At the time, I must have added the AN016 IOTA. Now the IOTA
checker reports that this is in error.

Here is another example:

K3AEB in PA (Pennsylvania)
IOTA = NA069
IOTAMSG: Bad IOTA

This is a bad IOTA. Pennsylvania does not have any IOTA groups. What
appears to have happened here is that I worked K3AEB in December 1997
when he was on Sanibel Island, FL. When I worked him again during the
PA QSO party in October 2000, DX4WIN auto-populated the IOTA field
from the previous QSO. That of course was not correct for this case,
and I did not notice it at the time of the 2000 QSO.

The IOTA prefix/state database was generated by my software, but I
have had to make some tweaks by hand. For example, EU016, EU090,
EU110 and EU136 were in YU, Yugoslavia before Croatia became a
separate DXCC entity. OC148 was previously in the deleted DXCC entity
of Portuguese Timor, but is now part of the Timor-Leste DXCC entity.
The RSGB IOTA database only has the current DXCC entity for each IOTA,
so I had to add the old prefixes by hand.

If you find any IOTAMSG that you believe are incorrect, please send me:

1. Full callsign
2. IOTA you think it should be
3. DXCC entity (Prefix) that your log says for that QSO
4. If USA, the State that your log says for that QSO

I'll make the necessary changes in the next release of the IOTA mapping file.

Re: [Dx4win] Custom award migration to DX4WIN 9.01

2017-10-20 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
When migrating custom awards, I found it convenient to filter by country and
do them one at a time. Filter (F8) for DL to do all the German DOKs, etc.
That way, the number of AWDERR messages isn't so overwhelming.

Subject: [Dx4win] Custom award migration to DX4WIN 9.01

As Paul mentioned in his release announcement, the custom awards
database has undergone some changes. Some awards were re-named, and
there were some changes to the custom award values. Note that in the
QSO window, the Custom award and Custom award value fields show the
abbreviations, not the full names. You can do a custom award report
to see the full names.

If you are tracking custom awards in DX4WIN, you should probably
perform a migration. This will result in changes to your log, so make
sure to save the changes if you are satisfied with the migration.

QSO | Multiple QSO Operations | Check Custom Awards

You will get a prompt like the following:

Checking Custom Award for 153811 QSOs
Are you sure

Click Yes. When it is done, you may see something like the following:

One Custom Award value could not be converted
Look for AWDERR: in the QSO notes field

These are examples of some of the error messages you see in the "Notes
for this QSO" field:

AWDERR: Awd=WLHA AwdV=0029 Msg=Bad award value2
AWDERR: Awd=ARLH AwdV=GUA 005 Msg=QSO not good for award2

The first message means the abbreviation for the custom award value
was not recognized.

The second message means that the QSO was made before the award start
date, or after the award end date.

If you find any such AWDERR messages in error, please let me know and
I'll update the database.

[Dx4win] Fwd: Finding callsigns that were too long in DX4WIN 8.05

2017-10-20 Thread kostas sv1dpi
This is an email from AD1C to beta testers which will be very useful if
you want to correct mistakes in loong calls. 805 could not keep
calls longer than 12 characters. 901 can do it. So it is time to correct
them. But which were these calls? The answer below from our beloved Jim
AD1C...

Hi Folks,

Another tip:

DX4WIN 8.05 only supported callsigns of 12-characters or less.  DX4WIN
9.01 supports callsigns up to 16 characters long.  So some of the calls
in your old log may be truncated, and you will want to fix them in your
9.01 log.

To find these long callsigns, search for a string of 12 question mark
characters in the Callsign field of the QSO window.  This will filter
your log to only callsigns that are exactly 12 characters long.  You can
do this in either 8.05 or 9.01, but it's easier in 9.01 because you can
make the corrections at the same time:

You will find a number of calls that are exactly 12 characters long and
are OK, such as these:

 * HB0/DL1GGT/P
 * PJ6/PA3GIO/M
 * 5Z4/UA4WHX/A
 * XF1/F9IE/XF3

Yet here some callsigns from my log that are truncated and will need to
be fixed:

 * XF3/F6AOI/XF (compare to the last callsign above) [*]
 * HF55PKZDARBR (correct call is HF55PKZDABROWA)
 * VE100VIMY/VE (correct call ends in VE#)
 * VE100VIMY/VO (correct call ends in VO#)
 * VE100VIMY/VY (correct call ends in VY#)

[*] busted call, it should be XF1/F6AOI/XF3.  I did not notice the
problem even though I have a QSL card (somewhere)!  Here are the correct
calls from the RSGB IOTA database; the top three are all too long for
DX4WIN 8.05:

 * XF1/F5TYY/XF3
 * XF1/F6AOI/XF3
 * XF1/F6BFH/XF3
 * XF1/F9IE/XF3

Especially take note of any call that ends in a '/'.  It's probably
missing /A or /P at the end.

When editing the callsign in your log, also clear any Upload Dates, and
set either the LoTW or eQSL flags to 'Y'.  This will force the updated
QSO, with the correct callsign, to be exported for your next LoTW or
eQSL upload.

One way to tell if the call is now correct is that there may finally be
a manager listed in the QSL Mgr field.

Hopefully, you took good notes so you know what the correct long
callsign should be.  If you can't figure it out, I have most all DX
spots made since 1997, so I can search the call for you.

73 - Jim AD1C

p.s. here is a list of calls from the DX4WIN QSL manager database that
are longer than 12 characters:

HF55PKZDABROWA
OM2015TITANIC
ON500MERCATOR
PA0GAM/OH0/OJ0
PG540BUFFALO/J
VE100VIMY/VE1
VE100VIMY/VE2
VE100VIMY/VE3
VE100VIMY/VE4
VE100VIMY/VE5
VE100VIMY/VE6
VE100VIMY/VE7
VE100VIMY/VE8
VE100VIMY/VE9
VE100VIMY/VO1
VE100VIMY/VO2

[Dx4win] new features in 901

2017-10-20 Thread kostas sv1dpi

Paul talked about all the new features.

I would like to note some long awaited features which I liked most in 901:

-> Auto connect in clusters

This may or not respond to your question. I save my log to OneDrive in the
cloud, which allows my four separate computers at three different locations
to access and sync to the same master logfile. Works great in Version 8.05
and in the new Version 9.01.

[Dx4win] R: CAT problem

2017-10-20 Thread Tibor M. Blum - IK2SAI -
Kostas i confirm the problem. IC7300 seems works ok.
But in the dx4win frequency window there are erratic values. In any case i can
point and click on the band map and the radio QSY correctly.
Problems are with the IC7600, radio nr 1 for my setup.
I click and it is changed only the mode.
If i click on the band map, the red arrow on the left hand side of the map
remain where is the mouse pointer until i release the mouse button. Then it
returns on the previous frequency. As i said, mode is changed correctly.
If i move the frequency with the vfo knob, dx4win read correctly the frequency.
Problemi s only for the point and click.
In the dxspot window if i click on a dx that is in snother band, the 7600
change mode only but not fequency/band.
Dx4win 8.05 as worked without the minimum problem since day one with my 7600
(and the same with ts2000 ecc ecc)
Something may be happen!

I don't use a network drive for running a log, but I do use one for a

Here's the weird part, though: I closed 8.05, opened 9.01 again and at

Re: [Dx4win] CAT problem

2017-10-20 Thread kostas sv1dpi
I believe there are not changes in code on cat control. Only Paul can
say if these are the same files from Jim's site or new ones, so it is
possible to have bugs. I assume you use files from Jim's site for these
radios. don't you? Also please confirm that you have the same settings
in both versions for the 2 radios? Anyone else who has tried Icoms 7300
or 7600?

frequency and mode i change only the mode.

When i switch to radio nr2 (IC7300) in the first instance, on the Radio
Frequency Control window (of dx4win) appare a frequency like 2.073.352,48

I confirm that with the dx4win 8.05 all was ok.

[Dx4win] DX4WIN 9.01 country file

2017-10-20 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
There were some changes to the DX4WIN 9.01 country file. Most notably:

> Callsign exceptions and mappings in the country database have now a start-
> and end-date allowing multiple date ranges to be specified.

Though I have tested this many times, there could be some subtle
differences in your DXCC totals. The easiest way to identify the
problems is to follow these steps.

NOTE: It's best if both the OLD and NEW versions of DX4WIN are using
the *same* country file release, either from 21-Sep-2017 or
20-Oct-2017.

NOTE: If you have "Pfx=" errors in your original log, it will be more
difficult to find the new errors specific to DX4WIN 9.01.

1. Export an ADIF file from your old DX4WIN version.

2. Create a new, empty log in DX4WIN 9.01

3. Import the ADIF file from step #1 above into the empty log you
created in step #2.

4. Using F8, search for the text "Pfx=" in the "Notes for this QSO"
field. I do not care about ZONE errors, there could be many of these.
However, if the errors are on portable calls in either BY, UA9, VE or
VK, I am interested in those.

Only if you are *convinced* that the old country file was correct, and
the 9.01 country file is incorrect, please send me the following:

- callsign
- date of QSO (please spell out the month, or use the DD-Mmm- format)
- what DXCC entity you believe it *SHOULD* be

I will be happy to make corrections in the next release of the DX4WIN
country file.

Ron, it doesn't update automatically like Windows. We control when we ask for

Download 9.01 and try it.  You can not save or print without a license
key.  This way you can tell whether it works on XP or not before
spending money on an upgrade.  Post your results to the reflector.

Re: [Dx4win] Ordering version V9

2017-10-20 Thread Kostas SV1DPI
Paul sent the list of the new features. I copy and re-send it Cost
is 35$ if you are user of version 8

Packet Cluster
Ability to auto connect to a cluster node. The node is shown in the
preferences and will not change when the clusters.txt is updated.
The redesigned Announce DX Window can automatically include state, county,
IOTA and VUCC grid in a DX spot if specified in the QSO Window.
The clusters.txt is no longer modified after selecting a node and is now a
single file. Previously, two files were used specify a keep alive parameter
or not. The keep alive value is now part of the cluster node configuration.

Radios
A number of new radios were added.

Reports
Progress reports use now three dates for reporting.
Submission report honors the exclusion of deleted countries
Added columns to WPX submission report so it can be used for submissions by
saving the report as a csv file.

RST
rstR and rstS fields can have 5 characters; numerical formatting is no
longer enforced to allow for EME reports etc

System
On-line updating for program and data files. See Main Form | Help | Check
for Updates
Many files have been renamed to better reflect their use; binary files have
the *.dat file extension and text files the *.txt file extension. See
Appendix B for more details.
Cosmetic changes and fixes; most importantly that when using skins, windows
no longer change position and size when restarting the program.
Many small bug fixes; many of them never reported previously!
Reading of ADIF files is substantially faster
Expanded the memory available to the program; log files with a million QSOs
are possible.

Thank you for your recent order via the DX4WIN web site. The DX4WIN license
keys are manually generated and as soon as yours has been generated, it will
be sent to you as quickly as possible.

Your business is appreciated. If you have any questions about your order,
please let us know.

I never get to see that order. GMAIL has issues with AOL when they are sent
from the order form. If you use AOL, contact me direct.

Also, the installer is self contained; you do not need to have an older
version of DX4WIN installed.
