I'm sorry about that Ricardo (lo siento, amigo). The list of summits
starts of with these three fields:

SummitCode, AssociationName, RegionName

"AssociationName" is the name of the DXCC Entity and that is what my
software uses to produce the custom award for DX4WIN. "Crete" is
actually in the next header, "RegionName" under Greece. I will fix
Crete and any others I find the next time I update the awards
database. Please contact me directly (not on reflector) if you need
an immediate fix.

> What about new satellites???

That would require a change to the program itself. I have no control over that.

2020-07-08 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Mike, I just tried F2 on my most recent QSO, pretending that he sent me a QSL.

I have the following settings (checked):

* Mark QSO as Confirmed
* Mark for printing a Label
* Set QSL Date to Today

QSL Method:
QSO Selection: Next QSO

When I typed F2, my QSO changed as follows:

Label -> Y
Cnfm -> Y
Method ->

So it seems to work as expected here.

Ricardo, I apologize to you and everyone else waiting for this.

all my spare time, and some time that wasn't spare. I'll copy the

I need to push out a country file release tonight. I'll update the

Type F8, then type any text you want to search for in either the

the QSOs whose notes match.

[Dx4win] Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing (6/23 test version)

2020-06-22 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
I uploaded a new version of the "Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award
Listing" program:

http://dx4win.ad1c.us/VUCC/VUCC_v3.1_20200623.exe
http://dx4win.ad1c.us/VUCC/ - documentation etc. (not updated)

You can find my original message here:

http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/dx4win/2020-June/025751.html

This is what the default output now looks like:

http://dx4win.ad1c.us/VUCC/ad1c_2020-06-20.pdf

The program looks slightly different. Here are the main changes:

* Removed Output selection. The .csv file from the DX4WIN Listing can
now be anywhere, but you'll still have to navigate to find it

* Fixed a bug if the listing uses Frequency instead of Band. This
would happen if the "Show band in MHz" box is checked on the QSO tab
of your DX4WIN preferences. As a side-effect of this, I had to remove
support for the 4cm (70MHz) band. If you need this, let me know.

* Added two new check boxes:

  1. Needed/worked (default = checked). When checked, the output
will have darker NEEDED grids and lighter CONFIRMED/CHECKED grids.
This will emphasize the grids you need to work, instead of the ones
you have already confirmed.

  2. C=S=* (default = checked). When checked, grids that are
confirmed will be the same color as grids that are checked. In other
words, there are only three different colors: unworked, worked and
confirmed

I also found a way to move the individual fields (10x10) to be
adjacent to each other, without gaps.

I renamed the "Field" field to be "LL Field", meaning Lower-left
Field. This is how you specify what geographical area you want the
output to cover. It can be a 2-letter field or up to a 6-digit grid,
but only the first two letters of the field matter.

I fixed a couple of other things that would cause the program to crash.

Please give it a try and let me know what you think. One thing I
would like to do, but is a bit of work, is to save the check box and
print format settings. So the next time you run the program, you will
get the same settings as the last time. I could potentially save the
LL Field as well.

> Confirmed = Light Gray

OK, it seems you want to INVERT the colors.

I think what I can add two more check boxes:

1. Confirmed/Checked same color
2. Emphasize Needed grids (or something like that)

It sounds like you would want both boxes checked.

I'll try to push out another test version later today or tomorrow.

[Dx4win] Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing

2020-06-20 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Hi Folks,

I started to work on this utility again after several years. This can
be used anywhere in the world, not just USA. You can see an example
of the current output here:

http://dx4win.ad1c.us/VUCC/ad1c_2020-06-18.pdf

The coloring is slightly different than before:

- Black means Checked (credit given by ARRL)
- Green means Confirmed (but not yet submitted)
- Red means worked but *not* confirmed

You may also notice a blue outline. I just added this option
yesterday. It is for the Fred Fish Memorial Award from ARRL (FFMA):

https://www.arrl.org/ffma

I like to keep a printed copy near my operating position. For me, it
works better than using F8 all the time. There is one problem that I
need help with. As you can imagine, color works *great* if you have a
color printer, but what happens if you only have a monochrome
(black/white) printer? I printed the color result on a monochrome
printer we also have in the house. The problem was that both the red
(not confirmed) and green (confirmed) squares appear to be the same
color (sort of a light black or dark gray).

My proposal is for users who need to print the map on a monochrome
printer, that I will use RED only for unconfirmed grids. Grids that
are either confirmed or checked will show up in the same black color.
This is to make it easier to identify grids you may need to re-work.
Presumably, grids that are already confirmed are of "no interest".

If you have any opinions, let me know. I've put up a beta version of
the current release. You can download it from here:

http://dx4win.ad1c.us/VUCC/VUCC_v3.1_20200620.exe
http://dx4win.ad1c.us/VUCC/ - documentation etc.

You may need to download/install this Microsoft library as well (the x86 link).

Scott, there are several Custom Awards in DX4WIN for tracking these. You
will have to update the QSOs manually from the LoTW report.

eQSL | Confirm eQSL using ADIF file

This will also fill in the State, County, Grid and/or IOTA fields for
those confirmed QSOs if that information is given in the eQSL
download. Many people upload QSOs with the wrong information, so be
careful if you are using these QSOs for awards.

Hola Luc,

There is an easier way.

In the QSO Window, LoTW | Export to LoTW. This function uses the LoTW
and Upload Date fields in the logbook to remember all the QSOs you
have already submitted to LoTW in the past, and creates a new ADIF
file containing only the NEW QSOs since the last export. You can then
upload this same file to *both* LoTW and eQSL (and QRZ and HRDlog if
you so choose). There is no filtering involved, as long as all your
old QSOs have already been marked as uploaded to LoTW.

This same flow applies using eQSL | Export to eQSL, but I never do
this, because the same ADIF file for LoTW can be used for eQSL.

This is an old application note, but most of it still applies:

I wanted to finish off this thread.

QSL managers are stored in the country file. Before DX4WIN 9.0x, the
country file was saved every time you exited DX4WIN. In DX4WIN 9.0x,
that is not the case. The country file is read-only. There is a
separate file in the SAVE directory named "usrexcpt.dat". This file
contains all changes you have made to either callsign prefixes or QSL
managers, and is saved every time you exit DX4WIN. Therefore, once
there is an error in this file, simply installing the latest country
file will not fix the problem.

I told Paul to delete this file, and his QSL manager in error disappeared.

I generally don't ever look at this file. It usually only contains
mistakes I made while logging, for example, assigning the wrong CQ
zone to a USA callsign.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - if you find an error with
either the country prefix associated with a callsign, or a QSL
manager, please let me know via E-mail so I can fix the master
database (country file). Then everyone will benefit from the
correction.

Hi Paul,

The QSL Managaer Editor is not available in DX4WiN 9.0x.

The easiest way would be to download and install the latest country file from:

https://www.country-files.com/category/dx4win/

The country file contains the QSL manager database.

Here are the release notes:

Ver 9.8 - 10 May 2020

Re: [Dx4win] DX4win after the crash

2020-04-19 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
It looks like the problem with Fiji and the others was relatively
short-lived. It was present only in the country file released on
April 5. I was using a new method to create the IOTA list that would
work for both DX4WIN 8.0x and earlier, and DX4WIN 9.0x. Previously,
the file had been edited by hand. Now it's created from the IOTA
database that one can download from the IOTA web site.

Dick, the IOTA for Fiji has had the wrong latitude/longitude for some
time. I fixed this in the most recent country file release on April
18. The issue came to light recently when R207RRC operated from IOTA
AS-207, which also had the same problem. I noticed it because the
sunrise/sunset times did not make any sense. These four IOTA all had
the same problem and were fixed:

IOTA AS-027
IOTA AS-092
IOTA AS-207
IOTA OC-016 (Fiji)

The IOTA database defines a latitude/longitude "box" inside of which
the IOTA lies. In these four cases, the left-hand side of the box was
to the WEST of the International Date Line, and the right-hand side of
the box was to the EAST of the International Date Line. This caused
the calculation of the center of the box to put it near 0 degrees
longitude instead of near 180 degrees longitude.

As it turns out, the IOTA Web Site at https://www.iota-world.org/ also
had the same problem with their sunrise/sunset calculations. I
notified them and it was fixed within a day.

I did an experiment. I had worked and confirmed ZE5JJ as a Novice, in

December 1974. I did a DXCC Report and selected a Band listing. Sure
enough, I have Z2 confirmed on 15 meters.

The only differences between yours and mine, that I can see are a)
DXCC entity, b) Band.

I don't think it's the CW cutoff date.

I put them in the country file to start on March 7. They actually started
March 2 or March 3. I will fix this in the next country file.

Paul, the simple answer is that it is not possible to do this
automatically inside of DX4WIN. Please read this application note:

  https://dx4win.ad1c.us/appnotes/dxcc.html

At one time, there was an application that would try to do this. I
believe it was written by a station in W8-land, but I can not remember
the callsign. Maybe someone else can recall. It worked, but you
should also do the checks described at the end of the release note
above.

DX4WIN 9.0x does allow the user to take an ADIF listing of
approved/checked IOTA credits and apply them to the DX4WIN log. It is
theoretically possible that Paul could implement something similar for
DXCC, using the ADIF report file that you can download from ARRL
Logbook of the World. Maybe if enough people ask for this...

upgrading from a version released before 2017, make sure to read the
first NOTE on the web page.

Please note that the default installation directory is (still)
C:\dx4w805. If you are using DX4WIN 9.0x, you may want to change that
to match your DX4WIN 9.0x installation directory.

Here are the release notes:

Ver 9.6 - 6 January 2020
Bug Fix: Submode was undefined for ARRL RTTY Roundup
Bug Fix: Callsign was truncated in About dialog box

The default output format is DX4WIN9 format. If you are still using
an older version of DX4WIN, you must select a different output format.
You can *not* import DX4WIN9-formatted DXQ files into DX4WIN 8.0x or
earlier!

Your anti-virus program may report a false-positive during
installation or operation. Please disable it to see if that fixes the
problem. I use the anti-virus built into Windows 10 and have not had
any problems with either.

That only works if you assign the same group # to each and every
single FT4 or FT8 QSO you make. There is no way in DX4WIN to create a
filter selection by MODE, only by DATE or Group #.

But the very first time you do this (ever), right-click on the
Callsign/Mgr Lookup (F3) window and make sure that Automatic Update
(at the bottom) is checked. This allows the window to update as you
scroll through your log, as well as update when you are entering a new
QSO. Once you check this setting, you'll never have to do it again.

This is no automatic way to get that data into the logbook, however.
You must click on the Update QSO button to do that.

[Dx4win] Compare DX4WIN Award Credit Status with LoTW (Logbook of the World)

2020-01-02 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Happy New Year!

Many years ago, I wrote a utility to help you compare the DXCC credits
granted to you by ARRL with the Checked DXCC credits in your DX4WIN
log:

http://dx4win.ad1c.us/lotw/

This is helpful if you have been using the Reports menu in DX4WIN to
make DXCC submissions, following the Confirmed -> Submitted -> Checked
model. For more information on how this works, see this now
10-year-old application note:

http://dx4win.ad1c.us/appnotes/dxcc.html

If you are not using both DX4WIN and LoTW to maintain award credits
for VUCC (VHF/UHF Century Club) or WPX (Worked All Prefixes), you can
stop reading now.

I am also working and submitting VUCC grid squares on 6 meters. Some
time back, I tried to implement a way to compare VUCC award credits,
hoping it would work the same way as DXCC (same utility). However,
whereas ARRL lets you download an ADIF file with all your DXCC
credits, it does not provide this same feature for VUCC. I did look
into using this K1MU utility to download your VHF QSOs from LoTW to an
ADIF file:

http://www.rickmurphy.net/lotwquery.htm

The ADIF file you download does include some VUCC award credits, but
only those made using LoTW confirmations. Any paper QSLs you sent in
for VUCC credit are NOT listed in the downloaded file. If you have
submitted both QSLs and LotW confirmations for VUCC credit, that's not
very useful.

Still, there is a way to get a list of all the VUCC Grids that have
been credited to your ARRL award account, from the LoTW website, that
includes both paper QSL and LoTW confirmations, but it's not as
straightforward as simply clicking on a link to download a file.

Yesterday, I updated the Compare DX4WIN to LoTW utility to support
comparing VUCC credits. I intend to release this update no later than
the weekend of January 11/12, 2020. I hope that others find it
useful. I have a bunch of VUCC award credits to fix in DX4WIN to make
things match. Of course, there will be detailed instructions on how
to download the list of VUCC credits from LoTW in a form that the
utility accepts.

The reason for this long message is that I could add similar
functionality for the CQ WPX award, because you can use LoTW to submit
confirmations for the WPX award. It would work in a way similar to
VUCC. If no one wants this, then I won't bother to add this
additional functionality to the utility. If you *do* want this,
please let me know. I'll probably need a copy of your log and your
LoTW WPX credits in order to debug the changes, because I have never
applied for a WPX award.

Re: [Dx4win] FT8 - DXCC

2020-01-02 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Hola Raymundo,

There is no easy way to get DXCC status for only FT8 QSOs. You can
use F8 to search for QSOs made using FT8, but a DXCC status report
will still include all QSOs in your log. You will have to export your
FT8 QSOs into a separate log to see what you want.

Using F8, search your log for Mode=FT8. Then use File | Import/Export
to export the search results to an ADIF file.

Use File | New in DX4WIN to create a new, empty log file. Give it a
temporary name, definitely NOT the same name as your main logbook.
Then import those FT8 QSOs from the previous step into this new log.
>From there, you can do a DXCC report to see how many DXCC entities you
have worked on FT8.

The same goes for FT4, but for the F8 search, you need to search for
Mode=MFSK and Submode=FT4.

If you want to see combined DXCC statistics for both FT4 and FT8,
export the QSOs made with those two modes separately, then import both
FT4 and FT8 ADIF files into the same empty DX4WIN log.

[Dx4win] DX4WIN Award database release 19.7 - 28 December 2019

2019-12-28 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
The DX4WIN Award database was updated on 28 December 2019.
It contains 221 awards. This is a link to the release notes:

http://dx4win.ad1c.us/awards/index.html#19.7

DX4WIN 9 users should use Help | Check for Updates from the main menu.
Note that there may be a delay between this announcement and when the
updated custom awards database is actually available.

Users of older versions of DX4WIN should use the DX4WIN Data Updater:

http://dx4win.ad1c.us/updater

The ZIP file also contains a number of membership list files
(plain-text files with a .list extension). These can be used to
identify member calls in the DX Spots window. Please read the
application note on Membership Lists for more information.

Here are the changes:

19.7 - 28 December 2019

[30MD] 30 Meter Digital Group (updated)
[AGCW] Activity Group CW-DL (updated)
[ARLH] Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society (updated)

[SKCC] Straight Key Century Club (updated)
[USIA] United States Islands Award (updated)
[WCA] World Castles Award (updated)
[WFF] World Wide Flora Fauna (updated)
[WWYC] World Wide Young Contesters (updated)

Finally, an apology to DX4WIN9 users. Due to a software glitch on my
end, the POTA award has not been updated for DX4WIN 9.0x users since
September. It was a frustrating problem to find, but an easy one to
fix. My software environment has a lot of dependencies, and I missed
a couple of rules along the way.

Please let me know if there are any problems.

Happy New Year 2020 to you all!

Sorry, a few QSL managers had errors. They will be fixed in the next
country file release in early 2020. Thanks to WA7AA for noticing the
problem.

KC4AAA, KC4AAC and KC4USV are via K7MT, not K7TM.

DX4WIN already has a feature to avoid duplicate QSOs.

File | Preferences | QSO tab, make sure that "LoTW" is checked under
"Label/Upl flag". Each new QSO will have the "LoTW" flag set in your
logbook. When you want to export for LoTW or Club Log, LoTW | Export
to LoTW. DX4WIN will export only those QSOs where the flag is set.
It will then clear those flags, and put today's date in the "Upload
Date" field. This will prevent them from being exported again. You
don't have to use the LoTW flag for this, you could use the eQSL flag
instead if you don't use that service.

Personally, every time I Export to LoTW, I upload those QSOs to Club
Log. Club Log has a feature called "LoTW Sync" where it uploads any
new QSOs to LoTW on your behalf:

https://clublog.org/lotw/

One upload, two consumers. And I don't have to remember which QSOs I
uploaded to which service.

[Dx4win] REMINDER: updates to DX4WIN Calendar, Master Callsigns, Membership Lists, DX Cluster Nodes

2019-11-28 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Hi Folks,

Each Saturday at about 5 a.m local time (1200 UTC), I automatically
generate updates to the following DX4WIN data files for 9.0x users:

- DX Calendar (from 425 DX News)
- Master Callsigns (from Club Log)
- Membership Lists (eQSL, LoTW and OQRS users)
- DX Cluster Nodes ( http://www.dxcluster.info/telnet/ )

After I generate the new data files, it may take Paul a day or two to
upload them to the DX4WIN server. You can then "Help | Check for
Updates" to see if new files are available. The first three files
above change every week, the list of DX Cluster nodes less often.

Prior to today, the list of OQRS [On-line QSL Request System] users
had been relatively small, about 2700 users. It did not include many
of the non-DXpedition users of the Club Log OQRS system
(https://clublog.org/logsearch.php). Starting this coming Saturday
(November 30), the list of OQRS "members" will include all those
non-DXpedition users (over 28K callsigns). This did not actually
increase the size of the membership list data file very much, because
most if not all those users were already included in the list of known
good callsigns from Club Log.

I hope people will find this useful. I was inspired to make the
change because CB1H did not show up as a Club Log user in my own log,
even though he does provide the service through Club Log.

Finally, I was hoping to release a new version of the DX4WIN Data
Updater with this change, for the benefit of the users of older
versions of DX4WIN. However, I am having problems reading the Club
Log data into the program, one of my libraries does not like the file.
Once this is resolved, I will release a new version.

File | Preferences, QSO tab. Look for the box titled, "Label/Upl

File | QSLs. There is an option there to clear the Label flag(s).

Joe, I went through all the preferences but could not find anything.
Maybe this is something Paul can add to the program, as part of the
Rep/Lab preference tab, i.e. fill in default values for "Print QSL
Labels" from the preference item(s).

You can't rely on the file date of country.dat - it gets re-written
every time you exit DX4WIN.

Instead, try this. It has been this way for a long time:

http://www.country-files.com/contest/#Version

The instructions aren't technically correct for DX4WIN, but the same
principle holds:

In your logging program, try to log the callsign “VERSION” (on a
DX cluster node, use the SH/H VERSION or SH/SUN VERSION command). Each
version of the country files will return a different country (except
for Win-Test, see #3 below). That country will be indicated in the
release notes for that version.

I need to add this information to this page, but I have not had time:

For users of DX4WIN 9.01 and later...

This release contains many more callsigns from European IOTA (Islands
on the Air) operations since 2010 (and a few before). For the most
part, I have now completed all callsigns beginning with 2-9 as well as
A-J. I'll keep adding more until I get to the end. LA is the next
group I will be working on. You can see the very long list of
additions here:

http://www.country-files.com/dx4win-cty-19.15-16-october-2019/#IOTA

If you run "Check IOTAs" from the QSO | Multiple QSO Operations menu,
and notice any mismatches where you believe your log data to be
correct, especially when confirmed with a QSL, please contact me
directly and I'll look into it. I believe I have fixed all the errors
that were reported to me after the previous release.

Hi Bud,

Mine does also, but I can indeed find the QSO by double-clicking. I
"logged" a QSO with 1TKZ on 6 April 1990. This QSO shows up in the
QSO window with the Prefix field blank.

Please send me your .DXL file and I'll try to see if there is some

This does seem like a bug in DX4WIN however. That line should not
really be there.

[Dx4win] ADIF to DX4WIN log conversion version 9.5 released 2 September 2019

2019-09-02 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
I have released version 9.5 of ADIF to DX4WIN, you can download it from here:

   http://dx4win.ad1c.us/adif2dxq/

There is no need to uninstall the old version first. If you are
upgrading from a version released before 2017, make sure to read the
first NOTE on the web page. Please note that the default installation
directory is (still) C:\dx4w805. If you are using DX4WIN 9.0x, you
may want to change that to match your DX4WIN 9.0x installation
directory.

NOTE: The previous version was really 9.4, as reported by the
About... box in the program, though I announced it as version 9.3.

Here are the release notes:

Ver 9.5 - 2 September 2019
Feature: Added World Wide Digi DX Contest
Bug Fix: Added support for sub-modes like FT4
Bug Fix: For DX4WIN 9.01 and later, the EA RTTY contest used
the wrong custom award name

The default output format is DX4WIN9 format. If you are still using
an older version of DX4WIN, you must select a different output format.
You can *not* import DX4WIN9-formatted DXQ files into DX4WIN 8.0x or
earlier!

Your anti-virus program may report a false-positive during
installation or operation. Please disable it to see if that fixes the
problem. I use the anti-virus built into Windows 10 and have not had
any problems with either.

[Dx4win] ADIF to DX4WIN for WW-Digi contest

2019-09-01 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Hi Folks,

I would like to update the ADIF to DX4WIN conversion program for the
recently-completed WW Digi Contest. Note that there is no requirement
for anyone to use this program. DX4WIN should be able to import an
ADIF file generated from your contest log without any problems.

https://ww-digi.com/
http://dx4win.ad1c.us/adif2dxq/

I tried converting an ADIF file generated by WriteLog, and for FT4
QSOs, only the Mode (MFSK) and not the Submode (FT4) was converted
correctly. So this is one obvious problem.

If you used any other software besides WriteLog or WSJT-X to log the
contest (for example, N1MM), I'd appreciate a copy of the ADIF file
generated from your contest log so I can add a conversion for it.

Thanks & 73 - Jim AD1C

Re: [Dx4win] upload to LoTW problem from DX4WIN

2019-08-26 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Export to LoTW works perfectly fine in DX4WIN 9.0x.

This is what I do:

1. In Preferences, on the QSO tab, in the Label/Upl flag box, make
sure that LoTW is checked.

2. Import all my QSOs from WSJT-X into DX4WIN using File | Import. I
ignore duplicate QSOs. This means I'm importing only the new QSOs.

3. After #1, LoTW | Export to LoTW. This does three things:

a) creates an ADIF file from all the QSOs that have the LoTW flag
checked in the QSO window.
This is the ADIF file that you will sign and upload to LoTW
using the Trusted  QSL software.

b) sets the Upload Date so these QSOs will not get exported to LoTW again

c) optionally changes the LoTW flag from Y to N (I always do this)

4. Save your log, because step #3 above will make changes to it!

Because I use both Club Log and LoTW, I have Club Log set up to upload
my QSOs from Club Log to ARRL LoTW. This saves me from having to
upload the ADIF file twice. And I don't need to use the Trusted QSL
software either. See:

https://clublog.org/lotw/

Hi Mark,

What logging software/format are you trying to import from? I wrote a
program some time ago to make this easier:

It converts ADIF to ADIF, and staggers the county-line QSOs by 1
second. I've never had a problem with that small an increment.

Please send me the log you are trying to import, I'll see if I can
help make it easier for you, if the conversion program above doesn't
do the trick.

What were the FT4 QSOs originally imported *from*? You need to
identify those QSOs and change the Mode=MFSK, Submode=FT4 for each of
them. Also make sure that "LoTW" is (re-)set to 'Y' and Upload Date
(next to it) is empty. That will force DX4WIN to export those QSOs
for your next LoTW upload.

Did the spot specifically say FT8 in the comment? If not, DX4WIN may
have interpreted it as either CW or Phone based on the frequency. If
you need T77C on one of those modes, the spot would be blue.

Inside the QSO window, search for "DC" in the state field. For every
such QSO, clear out the STATE field and save it.

Save your log, then exit DX4WIN. After you re-start, the problem
should be gone.

Also this...

If you are not in Real-time Add Mode (F9), the bandmap will not track
your VFO changes.
