[Dx4win] DX4win updater

The updater is no longer needed, you'll find the ability to check for
updates under the Help menu item.

I just checked for updates and the country update appeared. I did the
update and all is well again. Why???
Checked my other win 10 DX4WIN computer which also wasn't getting the
country update. Checked and Country Files appeared ready for update.
Installed and all is well on that machine.
Checked WP4OXA and it's now USA and not Puerto Rico.

Don't know why others received the update much much earlier.

Now I wonder how far out of date my Countries are since the Updater is not
working.
I also presume this also affects other files, such as IOTA among others for
example, are out of date.

Thanks to Jim, AD1C, who pointed out the error of my ways. Since I didn't
see my specific error message on the DX4Win Updater page, I didn't do the
following:

you must install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio
2015. When prompted, download and install vc_redist.x86.exe (not
vc_redist.x64.exe).

Well, I should have just done it. I downloaded/installed it and all is now
well. Thanks!

Install seemed to go well, but when I click on the desktop icon I get the

Regarding the Norton and Avast issues:

I have located the pages on their web sites to submit a program which
is causing a false positive (for a virus).  I will be submitting the
*next* version (9.1) after I release it.  I am going to submit both
the installer, as well as the Updater program itself.  I will probably
have to do this every time there is a new release of the Updater.

I may have 9.1 in the next couple of days.  There have not been any
reported bugs, but I will be adding a couple of improvements:

1.  Changing selections (only) under Master Callsigns and/or
Membership list will rebuild that database, even if there were no
changes to the source files.  If you change from "some selected" to
"none selected", the Updater will build an empty file.

2.  If a custom membership list is desired, but does not exist, the
Updater will bring up an empty file in a text editor so you can create
it.

Not sure if this might help or be a red herring but I was almost about to
send a sorry it doesn't work.

Win7 here.  The Microsoft run-time library was not on the computer.   My
first attempt at installing the Microsoft run-time library failed, I knew it
failed because it did not complete.  It was however now in the list of
programs on the computer so I uninstalled it, rebooted the computer and with
no other programs running ran the install again, this time it completed and
now v9 of Jim's updater runs fine.  I have also installed Microsoft run-time
library and v9 of Jim's updater on an old XP laptop and it all works fine
there too. 

So am wondering if the first failed attempt installing Microsoft run-time
library was because I had other programs running on my computer.  Certainly
after the reboot and on an idle computer it installed without a problem and
that is all I did different.  No expert, could be a red herring, all I know
is now I am a happy camper again.

Not opening *how*?

1.  Did you disable your anti-virus software during installation?
2.  Did you install the Microsoft run-time library?
3.  Is the Updater allowed to access the Internet (check your firewall)

Not opening *how*?

1.  Did you disable your anti-virus software during installation?
2.  Did you install the Microsoft run-time library?
3.  Is the Updater allowed to access the Internet (check your firewall)

[Dx4win] DX4WIN Updater bug with ARRL NPOTA

Hi Folks,

I just discovered a bug with the ARRL NPOTA and the DX4WIN Data
Updater.  The updater did not download the latest list, because the
first event on the calendar spans many days:

Death Valley National Park
NP15
AI6KU
2016-02-26 23:00:00
2016-03-06 14:00:00

As a work-around, go into your DX4W###\UPDATE folder and remove this file:

get-10-day-activations-api.php

You will also have to remove the Membership list and Calendar files
from these folders:

SAVE => DX4WIN.CAL
DX4W### => DX4WIN.MAS2

When you re-run the Updater, you should see it download the ARRL NPOTA
file, and also re-build the Calendar and Membership lists.

I will try to come up with a bug fix this weekend.

[Dx4win] Updater Program

I would like to thank 

Jim and all who gave me suggestions.

 

To resolve my problem was to download v7.10 of the program and install it.

I was using V6

Now all seems to operate as expected.

I did not know, by installing the program it would create all the needed
directories

That is a bug in 7.01 that is (will be) fixed in 7.02:

Bug fix: fixed installer so the program doesn't try to update
itself the first time you run it

It affects anyone in times zones to the EAST of Colorado, all the way
to the Int'l Date Line.  The bug, as it were, is  actually in the way
the installation program was configured, not in the program itself,
and should only happen the first time one runs 7.01.  It will (should
not) happen with 7.02.

Hi Jim,

Fair enough on keeping notes in the version history, good idea and I did
notice there was no link.  I wouldn't have asked about it if 7.01 didn't say
it was downloading a new version and that it would be installed next time it
ran.  I have installed it on 2 computers one XP and the other Win7 both said
the same thing.  Other than that 7.01 seems to be doing it's job just fine.

7.02 has not been released, which is why there is no link to in the Version
History.  I try to keep notes as I'm making changes, rather than trying to
remember all the changes at the end.  The Version History seems like the
best place to do that.

Just a question about the updater.  I just installed 7.01, I see there is
7.02.  When I ran 7.01 it said a newer version would be installed next time
it was run.  I have run it again and it still says 7.01.  Any thoughts?

The file dx4wupdexe must be in the same folder as the file dx4win.exe I am sure 
you have tested that.

If you have created a short cut, please right click on it and choose 
properties. In the run line could that be set to minimized? (sorry if I have 
put in the wrong names, I am running a DANISH Windows)

And have you tried to right click on the  updater program and choose run as 
administrator?

And did you remember to close DX4WIN before you ran the update?

Have you tried to get  a new copy of the updater from 
http://dx4win.ad1c.us/updater/index.html

[Dx4win] Problem Installing the DX4WIN Updater program

I am having a problem installing the DX4WIN Updater program.


Here's what I have done

I have gone to this page: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/updater/index.html#install and 
followed the information in this paragraph:

* If you have not installed the Updater program, click on this link to 
download a ZIP file containing the Updater Program and configuration files, and 
follow the installation instructions below.
Quick Start
* Download the ZIP file from the link above (where it says, Click on 
this link to download a ZIP file).
* Unzip the entire contents of this file into your DX4W### directory, 
so the dx4wupd.exe program is in the same directory as dx4win.exe
* There will three new directories: dx4win6, dx4win7 and dx4win8. Copy 
the dx4wupd.rc file from the directory that corresponds to your version of 
DX4WIN, into the DX4W### directory (that contains dx4wupd.exe).
* Double-click on the dx4wupd.exe icon to run the updater.

Following the instructions provided in the Quick Start paragraph I clicked on 
the link and the following file was downloaded::


dx4wupd_v6.07_20130729  

Next, I followed the instructions in this next paragraph:

Installation
After downloading the ZIP file from the link above, extract (unzip) the 
DX4WUPD.EXE file (program) to your DX4W### directory. This is the directory 
where DX4WIN.EXE can be found (when viewed in Windows, there will be a dx4win 
Application and a dx4win Icon in that folder). Do not put it in your SAVE 
directory or anywhere else. When the Updater Program runs, it will check to see 
if it's installed in the correct directory.


When I extracted or unzipped this file to my DX4WIN directory I got a file 
labeled only as Setup, not DX4UPD.EXE as in the paragraph above and this was 
the only file included in the zipped file.  I tried to delete this file and the 
following warning information (asking if I was sure I wanted to delete this 
file) was displayed that gave the name of this file as DX4WIN Data Updater 
Setup; File version 0.0.0.0; date created 7/28/13; 4.6 mb.

I ran this file and it placed a new (Updater) icon on my desktop but clicking 
on that icon had no effect.  Nothing happened.

I'm not sure why I can't find DX4UPD.EXE using the links provided in the 
instructions.

I am using Win 7 Home Premium, 64 bit version and using DX4WIN v8.05. 

Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

Try clearing your browser caches - both IE and Firefox.  The web
pages, etc. seem fine here.

This thing happens sometimes with other programs. Just switch-off and re-start 
the PC and normally it should work.

Thanks for the tip but still no luck.  The links on the DX4WIN Updater page 
don't seem to get me where I need to go.  For example, clicking on the 
following link:

Version 6.09 the Updater Program was released on 6 April 2014. Go to the 
Version History to download the installation program.

takes me to the Compare DX4WIN DXCC Credit Status with LOTW page instead of the 
Updater page.

Clicking on this next link:

* If you have not installed the Updater program, click on this link to

takes me to the following file: dx4wupd_v.6.07_20130729.zip but when unzipped, 
it only contains a setup application and no other files.

dx4wupd is installed in the dx4w805 directory.

Anyway, not to worry.  I'm fine as long as DX4WIN keeps logging correctly.

Is there another copy of the updater already running? If it's running but
not showing up on your desktop it's possible that you just need to open the
window running the updater.
I'd try alt-tab to see if you can open it, followed by a reboot to see if
it works afterwards.

It's a progress indicator showing how much of the download has
finished.  First 50% is green, then next 25% is yellow, then last 25%
is red.  If it's not moving, then something is wrong with the site
hosting the files.  I've asked my provider if he knows of any problems
this afternoon. It's working for me right now.

We're looking into the issue.

The default timeout in the program is way too long (180 seconds).  I
have a pending change to make it 10 seconds, but that obviously
doesn't fix the root problem.

John, are you running the updater program as minimized?  Check the
properties of the shortcut icon.

Or the console is off-screen, but I can't help with that.

Something funny is going on.

Since I upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium, my DX4WIN updater no 
longer shows me what files have been updated.  The updates work and is 
does tell me how many files, but I'd like to know which files have been 
updated.


Anyone have any ideas.

I had the same issue with a new update. It is the fullist.xml file that 
is causing the problem. Delete the file in the save directory and the 
program should run ok again.

Jim,

I do run the computer on LOCAL time so no issue there. Everything I see is that 
I am **running** the current version of 4.6. I did just try and deleted the 
file from the UPDATE directory and run the program again. Still the same thing. 
Always asks to update the Updater program.

I think what I will try next (I'm running out of time right now) is to just 
delete all the updater files and start again with a fresh download of the 
DX4WIN Updater to see what happens. I'm guessing somehow I got something mixed 
up with the older 4.4 version in the newer 4.6 version. I'm not a computer 
person so it would not surprise me if I messed up something there :(

I do have one other question right now, When asking about wanting to update the 
updater .exe file it gives you three options. Y | N | R. What does the R mean?

gainst over-writing or renaming the file.  That would cause the
ymptoms you see.  You could try deleting it from the UPDATE

Also make sure the version you're *running* is actually 4.6.  Remember
hat the older versions required you to copy the file from the UPDATE

If it is not, try installing it and see if the problem goes away.

I just ran the update on my Windows 7 Enterprise laptop at work and it
said that my version of the updater program was current.

I just installed Jim's updater program and it keeps asking me to update the 
program itself when I run it again. I recall there being some issue with 
daylight savings time effecting this last fall and Jim did a correction to the 
program.

It seems to be working ok other than asking to update the program every time I 
try and run it. I did have version 4.4 on the computer though I was having 
problems running it due to computer problems back last fall so never used it. 
Those are know fixed and I did do the update to 4.6 and it all seems to be 
working just fine other than that one issue.

Is anyone else having this issue again or do I have something set wrong?

Sounds like a file permission problem.  Change you change the file
permissions of the DX4W503 directory so that anyone can write it?  Or
run the updater as as Administrator.
