Of course if you do that, you'll no longer be able to go click on a spot
and have your radio automatically tune to the frequency and correct mode of
the spot ( if you have your radio linked to your computer).

Go to your preferences, Packet 2 tab. Look for a box called "DX
spotting patterns". Remove (erase) this one:

f|c|d|tZ|q|

Then Save Changes and Exit.

No, it's the 25 spots that refreshes. You can make any line auto refresh
by appending a | and the number of minutes.

However, you should *NOT* auto refresh large numbers of spots as this
would be an inconsiderate waste of the spot server's bandwidth.

If you want history, initially download 1000 spots then switch to the 25
spot feed.

Frankly, unless you are behind a firewall, you should use the telnet
clusters not the web server.

Why should I use a telnet cluster instead of the server?

Re: [Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2011-08-15 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
The spots that you get from a cluster come in as a steady stream, in
essentially real-time. Most, if not all, cluster systems on the Internet
are interconnected so the old concept of connecting to one close to you
to pick up locally spotted DX doesn't apply. Some clusters do have
filtering on them so that they only display spots from a particular
country, though I don't think that the one on K1TTT does that.

I'd turn your question around and ask why you'd want to use a web-based
one with only periodic refreshes? The one possible reason would be if
you were behind a firewall that blocked access on the ports required for
use by the cluster nodes themselves. While I don't normally use the
K1TTT node I do use it as a backup for when my primary one goes down.
I've never found that it's missing spots so I'm not sure why you are
having issues.

I had initially suggested that you use the K1TTT node because I use that
myself (occasionally, as noted) and I know that it's well connected with
a steady feed, but you might want to pick another one and see if that
seems to work better for you. I'd just pick one off the list that seems
to be close to you. As I mentioned, most these days are very
interconnected and you should have no trouble receiving spots.

On the other hand, if you're happy with the spots from DX Summit then I
can't really think of any reason to change.

One disadvantage of using DX Summit with for DX4WIN spots is that frequency is
only accurate to the kHz. A spot that shows up on 14200.4 on a browser will

Re: [Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2011-08-15 Thread Mel
You might consider using something other than K1TTT. It's an extremely
busy cluster, best to spread the activity around. Using telnet you will
receive each spot exactly once. With a Web server, you are receiving
them in fixed batches. If activity is low, you will receive spots
multiple times. If it gets busy... more than 25 per minute, you may miss
some. I would turn the question around... I would is ask is why use HTTP
(DXSummit)? It's a sub-optimum solution. The only reason I can think of
is if you are behind a firewall such as at work where telnet access is
restricted... but I wouldn't think that is the case for most of us. Who
gets to operate at work? ;-)

Re: [Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2011-08-13 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Assuming that you're seeing spots coming into the packet window (if not,
then the problem is with the cluster you're connecting to), you need to
make sure that the DX Spots window is sorting by arrival time. In that
window, right-click and select Sort then click on Arrival. (You can also
look at the window title, it should say something like DX spots [DXCC]
sorted by Arrival.

Also, make sure that you haven't accidentally held the window, it'll say
(HOLDING) if it is. If it says that, press the Insert button on your
keyboard when you've got the window in focus.

Re: [Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2011-08-13 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Keep-alive is only an issue if the cluster you connect to requires it.
Basically, some clusters will disconnect you if they don't see anything
from your system within a certain amount of time. If that's the case,
you'll need to have a keep-alive set, but you'd still see spots coming
in for the first few minutes until the time-out kicked in.

Which cluster are you connecting to, and do you see spots coming into
the packet window?

You might want to try something like the K1TTT-1 cluster which is tied
to a skimmer, meaning that you'll get a pretty much constant flow of
spots, especially now with the WAE CW contest in progress.

Re: [Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2011-08-13 Thread Mark K3MSB
DX Summit will not refresh in DX4WIN, but it refreshes if I am parked on
the web site.

Been using DX Summit for years, and it works fine for me, but (for me) it
will not update in DX4WIN.

K1TTT (non skimmer setting) updates, but looking at the DX4WIN site, it's
missing a lot of stations.

How do you have your DX4WIN configured so that DX Summit updates?

DX Summit is supposed to refresh every minute, at least the latest 100
spots one does. There are others, they may not refresh.

I just tried this in both DX4WIN and the web and the new spots were
 coming in as expected.

It just works out of the box, always has.

Do you have the latest DX4WIN.TCP file?

Which of the three DX Summit entries did you select? I believe only
the first one auto-updates (100 spots).
