The moment one of these scam artists start mailing their sad little beg for gold

the connected E-Gold Fraud Squad will instantly start DDOS attacks on their servers...

You would be playing with fire here. How can you be against spam, against
scams and be pro DOS attacks in the same breath?

Who will you DOS? Addresses culled from the header? They are routinely
forged and routed through blind relays

Will you DOS the spamvertised URL? They may be sitting on a shared
server with a bunch of innocent sites which you will take down with it

Once you initiate the DOS attack, *you* are the bad guy from the
perspective of every sysadmin and network administrator whose day
you louse up. You undermine your own credibility and nobody will care
why you are doing it.

You're the one who will get blackholed and probably turfed from your
own ISP for AUP violations.

Bad idea.

[e-gold-list] Re: Scam postings...question

2001-05-02 Thread CCS

Concerning the nature of OSGold...

It seems that OSGold is aimed at serving various scams and their
customers. It is good that these people have some other place
to go rather than e-gold so that the development of e-gold is not
distorted by their activities.

 2) They don't describe how they are holding the gold in reserve,
 other than in vague generalities.

Quite possibly they don't have any gold. And for their purposes
it probably does not matter if they don't care about sound money.
What their customers do need is just an untraceable way to
quickly transfer ordinary money so that the scamsters can get
away with their loot. The gold part of e-gold is not what made
e-gold useful to the scamsters.

they said that they handle about 40,000 transactions a week, and
several inconsistencies come up: 1) It took E-Gold 5 years to
reach 40,000 transactions a week, but only seems to have taken
 OSGold 2 months;

I don't find this implausible as the two cases are not the same. A
substantial number of scammees were already using e-gold and they
conducted a large volume of transactions. A large part of this
accumulated group could have just moved to OSGold; no need for
slowly attracting customers like e-gold.

Why is it that E-Gold has not experienced a noticeable drop in its
weekly transactions during the past couple of months when OSGold
 has reportedly picked up so many;

That is a good question. Note however that e-gold's velocity IS
MUCH lower than than it was last fall when a number of scams were
in their growth phases. Perhaps there are new scams running on
OSGold now and e-gold is no longer being yo-yoed by them. And the
e-gold volume is a bit lower now. Maybe healthier growth has made
up for some of the lost scammers.

I'd also point out that e-gold's reserves have hardly budged (and
have some large decreases at times) in the last 5 months; this is
quite a change from last year.

However, if OSGold had that kind of money,

I would not discount the likelyhood that OSGold has substantial
capital: the scams obviously get away with a lot of money.

[e-gold-list] Re: Scam postings...question

2001-05-01 Thread SnowDog

Why is everyone so afraid of OSGoldit seems to be
a valid way to exchange funds ... new as it is they
seem to not have missed a beat.. E-gold was new at one

time also. What is the deal...please explain in plain
english as I really want to understand here.

Several red flags:

1) No one knows who they are; meaning that they are not known in gold-bug
circles.

2) They don't describe how they are holding the gold in reserve, other than
in vague generalities.

3) They make wild claims, like the one where they said that each account was
backed by 150% in gold. Combine this statement with another statement where
they said that they handle about 40,000 transactions a week, and several
inconsistencies come up: 1) It took E-Gold 5 years to reach 40,000
transactions a week, but only seems to have taken OSGold 2 months; 2) Why is
it that E-Gold has not experienced a noticeable drop in its weekly
transactions during the past couple of months when OSGold has reportedly
picked up so many; 3) E-Gold does about 40,000 transactions a week now, with
about $12,000,000 in reserve. If OSGold has a similar amount in reserve,
then they would need about $18,000,000 in reserve to be backed 150%. If they
have this much gold, then someone would have had to have put up $6,000,000
in investment capital. However, if OSGold had that kind of money, we would
have heard about them long ago. So, it's highly unlikely that they are
backed by 150% in gold, and that they turn-over anything near 40,000
transactions per week.

4) They openly promote 'investment programs' based on pyramid schemes. These
are scams because they don't openly tell those to whom they promote these
'programs', how they operate. All of these programs are doomed to fail
because they return invested capital as income to previous participants.

For the speculation to stop, OSGold will have to become more open about how
they operate, and will have to perform an open, independent, audit.

2001-04-30 Thread OneGroupe International

Actually, Ben only posted a portion of my reply to him.

I never said that e-gold is responsible for the scams
that have been perpetrated using their services.

What I DID say is that it is unfair to call OSGold a scam
because some customers feel their funds are safer there
and advertise as such.

The advertising that Ben referred to did NOT come from
OSGold or its staff, but from our customers.

The point was that it is unfair to judge and call OSGold a
scam just
as it would be unfair to call e-gold a scam based on what
their
customers do.

By only posting a portion of my reply, it is obvious that you
have your own agenda Ben.

So, you question the honor and honesty of OSGold based on
our

it
would bring into play the following:

If OSGold is to be attacked or have their honor questioned
because of what account holders choose to write to their

E-gold is directly responsible for:

1) The scams that have taken place by their account holders
2) The people who have lost money to market makers who

Please advise me (and other members of the e-gold list) what

some

[e-gold-list] Re: Scam postings/Some links to help

2001-04-28 Thread Frank Zuchristian

These links were given to me by Mr. James Ray,
Omnipay. We suggest them to all of our clients, as
well as posting cautions about current scams, as we
hear them. I recognize that the cat is out of the
bag, but you should still take some time to review
them. Apparently, someone must have hacked into your
computer in order to get the passphrases.

Windows users are very susceptible in this area, as
windows retains previous pages. You can clear these
manually via internet options, clear all temporary
files, I do this every time I have gone into my e-gold
account. Use the microsoft utilities to clean your
disk, and a appropriate virus scanner, my system is
set to shut down automatically, in the event that
someone tries to enter it, inconvenient but safer.

http://www.mark-knutson.com/ start with the

then, or have
the immutable laws of economics somehow changed?

http://www.quatloos.com/ a pretty good comprehensive

Or maybe someone entered their password to your account number (I've
made this mistake occasionally). That doesn't therefore follow that
it was an attempt to hack the password.

#1 Did you lose any funds?

#2 How many times did they try your password? Once = someone made a
mistake. Twice = ?coincidence 3+ maybe someone is trying to break in.
As long as your password is reasonably complicated, you don't have
much to worry about.

If you're really worried, keep most of your gold in a 'private' e-
gold account you don't tell anyone the number to, and use your normal
account to pay out and take payments to the public?

2001-04-28 Thread Ben Legume

I seem to have trouble getting messages through to the e-gold list,
and thus, am sending this directly to you.

Well I'll just send it to the list and see if it posts, shall I?

I debated whether to even respond, but since this statement is so
blatant, felt a short response was in order.

This is the 1st I've seen of this statement you quoted, and,
regardless, do not understand how it led you to the idea that
OSGold is a scam. If someone posted that OSGold had security
problems and to move your money to E-gold, would that make E-
gold a scam??

If scammers are running around trying to scare people into moving
their funds from E-Gold (which has been around long enough that it
probably isn't a scam) to OSgold (how long have they been in
operation?).

For you to question the honor and/or honesty of the hard working
people of OSGold due to this is absurd.

I don't think so, I think it's prudent.

Just my 2 cents.

Sincerely,

Laurie Dyke

There is also another one going around. This one comes
from someone claiming to be the crown prince Ibrahim
Barrie. He says he has 15 million dollars in a safe
deposit box that he wants to move out of the country.

[e-gold-list] Re: Scam

2001-03-24 Thread Ben Legume

Simple. Someone is trying to set you up by buying small amounts for a
while then placing a fraudulent order.

Do you operate OzziGold? I think I tried to buy some E-Gold from you
last year, but you didn't have a bank account or something. Or it may
be a different Kelly (Ned?)
