[Elecraft] # 4472 receiver problem

2004-10-29 Thread jerry
Looks like I have a problem with a bad solder connection. Gary from Elecraft
had me do some checks and as soon as my arm rested against the front panel the
receiver came to life. I took the front panel apart and could not find any
bad or missing solder connections on the control, rf, or front panel boards
under inspection with a large lighted mag glass.
Just for GP I touched the solder iron to all the pins for the connectors.
When I put it back together I still had the same problem , dead receiver,
after pushed down on the control , it came to life again.

We are going away for the weekend, when I get back I will take it apart again
and check,, maybe even have fresh eyes look at it.

Gary recommended that I get the Cheap and Dirty Signal Tracing for the K2
off of their site... That is a very good tool for everyone to have.

I will post earlier next week on my results,, hopefully I will be able to find
the bad solder connection.

Tnx for all the help

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie K2 questions

2004-10-29 Thread Tom Althoff
Sorry for the off-topic content.

Wow...it looks like the magic word was Ampex! It is good to know I have
something in common with at least 2 people here besides ham radio.
I had some old HS-100 discs that I hot-glued audio CD's in the middle of to
make them look like giant LP's. They made good mirrors. Also had one with
a clock movement in the middle.

Yes...I miss Ampex.

On topic My AtoB, KAF2 and internal battery arrived today. I took Don
W3FPR's suggestion that I swipe one of the 470pf caps from the 10/12
bandpass filter update and put it in the VCO circuitVOILA I'm on
160M with the K2 again (after first pulling out all the junk caps
parallelled and sucking the solder out of the holes etc.). Now I just need
to order a replacement 470pf for the bandpass filter.

It's great to have a radio that I can fix on top of my washing machine (the
only clear bench space I could find today). And its great to meet such
helpful friendly people... I wish the ham bands themselves were this
pleasant to participate on.

It's nice to see some fellow ex-broadcast types on here. I worked in TV
broadcast and later owned a post-production house. I think I've used or
owned just about every AMPEX product ever made dating back to the model
350 audio tape deck, every VTR from the VR-1000 forward except the AVR-3
and VPR-80 (including the high speed tape duplicator of which I think
only three were made). HS-100 200 slomo disc recorders, AVA paint
system, several ADOs, ACE editors, Century 330 switchers, etc. Never had
a DCT deck or the storage deck based on it though... we went with
DigiBeta, D1 and D5 at that time.

It was a sad day indeed when AMPEX closed up shop. Without question,
Redwood City was the center of the video universe. A lot of those guys
went on to make more great products like Abekas (we also had a ton of
 Abekas equipment).

No power supply, No hum, No birdies, No problem?
Well, the sensitivity goes to Hell in a handbasket.

The solution?
The new K2-PSQ and K2-PSH

K2-PSQ is a 4 amp power supply to power your K2 with a bit of current to spare.
K2-PSH is a 25 amp power supply to power your K2/100 with a bit of current

Both power supplies fit in an enclosure that fits right under your K2 or

Re: [Elecraft] Hum coupling? - A real fix!

2004-10-29 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Actually - after toasting my internal KBT2 by overcharging with an uncontrolled
solar panel (hint hint... words for the wise) - I bought a $50 MityMite 12Ah
battery/charger from Autozone. I plug it in to charge when I'm not on the air,
and then I unplug the charging cord, and turn on the radio and have RFI free
operation (well - at least free of Power Supply related RFI).

I think Elecraft might do well do design a matching UPS/PS for the K2 K2/100.
It could utilize a smaller - well designed power supply that acts primarily as
a charger for an internal 25+ Ah battery that is used to power the K2. It could
go into an EC2 enclosure - and possibly have a forward facing speaker and
digital readout of battery voltage readout and/or charger battery status LEDs
(rapid charge, float charge, low-voltage disconnect). Another option might be a
connection in the back for a solar panel or other 'high voltage DC' input (high
voltage being 15-24V).

[Elecraft] To sell or upgrade?

2004-10-29 Thread Steven Pituch
Hi all,

I am the proud owner of K2 #402 (1.04d - 1.02), with KAT2, KSB2, and KNB2.
I have recently done some tests comparing this rig to some of my other rigs.
The K2 of course won. So now that the K2 design has matured, I would like
to get more options like the 100 W amp, the bigger auto tuner, and the DSP
unit.

So I have been learning about eBay, and PayPal etc, and have started to sell
some of my other equipment to help pay for this.

Now I am thinking whether I should upgrade my K2 #402, OR possibly sell it
and build another one. I do like building, but frankly wouldn't feel good
taking a significant loss on it. So this brings up two questions.

1)
If I keep K2 #402, which I think is in perfect condition, is there any
significant PERFORMANCE disadvantage to upgrading this earlier version and
then adding the KPA100, KDSP2, and KAT100? I guess if I went this route I
could sell the KAT2 and reduce the overall cost of this endeavor. The only
disadvantage I see is cosmetic since I would be soldering the parts on the
board sort of in a dead bug fashion as most of the upgrades to the Rev. A
board are done.

2)
Is it really worth it for me to sell K2 #402? I figured I put about $900
dollars into it. I'm thinking that I couldn't get anywhere near that if I
tried to sell it.

After reading the upgrade material I am leaning towards keeping #402, but
still would like to hear from the list.

Thanks for the input.

horse radios were K2's #2012 #2223. We also had a K1. All HF antennas
were simple dipoles. Oh, better mention that there were some very good
dedicated operators involved also.

[fpqrp] Tossing a wire out of the window,

2004-10-29 Thread Lloyd Lachow
I was ready to set up my Amateur Radio Station. I was
in Oakland, CA, on business, and my second-floor room
had been chosen for its proximity to a one-story shop
across an alley next-door, where I had tossed my
weighted wire last Fall, and had been rewarded with
some nice QSOs up and down the Left Coast. The wire
was 24 feet of #26 'silky' wire, and the rig was my
KX1, known as Kixie.

Unfortunately, as it turned out, for me and the local
avian populace, the proprietor of said shop had since
installed some nasty-looking wire thingies on the
roof's edge in what looked to be a successful attempt
to keep his awnings red, rather than spotted white. No
way was I going to toss my wire over that, and risk
the loss of the discarded razor handle I use a a
weight!

So I just lowered away into a willing bush nearby, to
keep the wire away from the hotel a bit, and laid a 33
foot RF ground on the floor of my room. I heard
FP/VE7SV on twenty meters pretty well, but could not
make my two watts heard through the din. Really, I
just wasn't patient enough.

Then I tuned up the band a little, and heard VP2ETG
working a group, split. Got him! Anguilla, 3784 miles.
Didn't work the FP/ station until last night, from
home, with the loop and five watts. Be a good place
for a Flying Pigs Pigspedition...

[Elecraft] My K2/100 wan't regulate down power on 40/80

2004-10-29 Thread Tom Arntzen
Hi again fellows!
Last mail I said my K2/100 want regulate down power on lsb ,but usb sounds fine.
After some investigations I found this not to be true.
Here is what actually happens.
And Eric or Wayne!
I would like your thoughts on this also.

First !
My setup is :
K2/100 #3829
Butternut HF9V Groundmounted with radials in ground.
Alinco power 80cm below K2 at 14,1V.

All bands 10-20meters ssb and 10-160cw is working as it should.
No hum or ripple at all.
Audio OK. Not hifi , but no one report bad so for me all except bad is OK.
(I just one of the guys that want to get understood!) (Married??? YES!)
40/80meter ssb?
Well! Audio partly OK.
40meter audio OK.
80meter audio on antenna OK ,with dummyload it is broken up.
If I set 50 watts on 80 meter and switch to 40 the rig put out 100watts anyway.
If I then wistle high pitch loud in mic. power goes to 170-180 watts.
It wan't regulate down power.
If I set power to max and wistle low tone and pitch and the regulate down the
rig will respond and regulate power.
It will then remember powersetting until bandchange again , and if I switch to
80 that memory is lost and an setting of 50watts is not remembered.
It wan't regulate down until I wislte low tone/pitch while I regulate from max
and down again.
I tried to split the K2 and KPA100 and the result was the same.
I don't think the KPA100 is straying over to the K2.
For me it seems like the KPA100 is strying to it's microcontroller.
Why?
Because when I whistle , sometimes the fan tries to turn during whistling.
When I stop whistling , the fan stop.
I had done the refastening of hardware on the KPA100.
It had get loose after 10 hours of fun.
Did not get things better.
Is this a grounding problem or something else.
If I was advised to check that and this I would do it and report back.
Also the KSB to carrier balance is rechecked and adjusted.
It is no difference on usb/lsb other than usb puts out a litle lower gain than
lsb , but problem is the same.
I can live with this now ,but not if I was to run a 1KW PA with the K2 witch is
my intensions for later.
HELP
Have a nice weekend all!

Hi guys!
Many of you have spoken of K2 mojo.
I have never seen K1 mojo!
Why?
About a week ago I was at my weekend qth.
I just brought my K1.
At 24oct2004 01.05utc I worked k2vv with 5 watts with my K1.
I was using a full size groundmounted 40meter quarter wave vertical at

Re: [Elecraft] Hum coupling?

2004-10-29 Thread Stuart Rohre
The bottom line on placement of rigs to avoid hum for Elecraft, or any other
brand, is to place the transformers and switchers as far from the rigs as
possible within reason. Use twisted pair leads from DC supplies external to
the rigs, and shield them if possible.

Alternatively (and at great cost) one could buy MuMetal to line a power
supply cabinet on the side toward the rig, but then you have a massive metal
piece blocking venting and cooling of the power supply.

As BPL trials have shown us, Power sources are sources of noise.

Rigs need low noise to have best sensitivity on receivers to work the DX.

DX means distance so keep those supplies at DX.

[Elecraft] K2 #4487 up and running on CW but SSB...

2004-10-29 Thread Tom Rune Breivold
My K2 works great both on RX and TX in CW. Also RX on SSB is splendid, but
my SSB TX sounds like a built in unfiltered switchmode supply. During
alignment I can listen to my voice in the headphones and it sounds ok. But
during normal mode in SSB TX has a whining sound. It increases at the
upper part of the band and decreases I frequency at the lower portions of
the band. I have tried running my K2 from a car battery - but the sounds are
still there. I have checked all components for misplacements and values and
are correct. Weher do I look?

RE: [Elecraft] To sell or upgrade?

2004-10-29 Thread Steven Pituch
Hi all,

I did some research. The last two K2s on eBay sold for a 30% discount based
on their estimated original cost. That's quite a loss.

It seems that the evolution of the K2 design has been such as to avoid
obsolescence of earlier serial numbers, making it, so far, a timeless and
incredible design.

So it looks like I will be keeping #402, and will start the basic upgrades
soon.

Thanks all for the input.
