[Elecraft] K1 goes QRO !
Hi folks, the K1 is my only rig (I've been licensed only 18 months) and I have been enjoying the delights of HF QRP and CW, however I do have an old TS520. It is very sick and I don't have the time or inclination to fix it (the K1 is more than good enough for me) but the bomb proof driver and PA is fully functional. So over Xmas I have made various mods to the driver and control circuits and now have the facility to either run the K1 on it's own or at the flick of a switch use it to drive the TS520 up to 100W. QRO on the cheap hi. I'm quite chuffed at having modern micro p equipment working with the old valve (tube) amps a real hybrid. I have to sacrifice auto CW break in but I'm not too fussed about that. One question though, do I need to worry about any increase in harmonics or alteration of the keying waveshape by running the K1 signal through the TS520? I've looked at the output on a scope and it looks clean to me but I don't have a spectrum analyser. Bill, K3UJ sez: Drats! They now seem to be out of the Celrons. Their P4 SC420 w/ 1G ram is $699 I said you had to be very careful about the selections or the price comes out funny. Example: Default: $630 with 512MB DDR2, 400MHz, 2X256MB, Single Ranked DIMMs 3 Year Basic Plan Onboard SATA, 2 Drives connected to Onboard SATA Controller First Hard Drive 40GB, Serial ATA, 1 inch, 7.2K RPM, Hard Drive Second Hard Drive 40GB, Serial ATA, 1 inch, 7.2K RPM, Hard Drive Change it to: FREE UPGRADE to 512MB DDR2, 400MHz, 2X256 Single Ranked [subtract $99] $531 This is very interesting, because you are changing the memory for identical memory but saving $99. Go Figure. Change it to: 1 Year Basic Plan [subtract $119] $412 It's a $200 machine. If it breaks, buy another. Change it to: Onboard SATA, 1 Drive connected to Onboard SATA Controller First Hard Drive 80GB, Serial ATA, 1 inch, 7.2K RPM, Hard Drive [add $10] Second Hard Drive, None [subtract 89] $333. If you need a second drive, $89 for 40G is horrible. Try TigerDirect. So, you are paying $100 extra for a better chip. The P4 will run 800MHz frontside buss, so you might (think carefully about this!) want faster memory. Your call. rtfm. Someone mentioned they required a Tax ID number. I did not use my tax ID, nor did it ask, and I used a Personal Credit Card to pay. That information appears to be incorrect. About the Desktop vs Server question, Dell does not support does not mean it won't work. It does mean there is no AGP slot, but a PCI graphics card is fine for everything except Gaming, DVD viewing and CAD. Heck, the onboard Video is probably fine for hi-res, non real-time applications. The SC420 does have two PCI Express slots, whatever those areg. END OF THREAD FROM GEORGIA. Use the web, Luke! [Elecraft] KPA-100 CaltPA?
I have a question concerning the KPA-100 and temperature issues. Took the rig to VP2VVV during cq ww cw contest in Nov. Ambient shack temp was between 70 and 85 degrees F. We were running big pileups @40 wpm during late afternoon on Sat and boy did the top of the rig get hot! Later that evening when tempo slowed down, was doing SP on 80 and 40 and had one last big run around 11pm. Shut the rig down for some sleep and other op got up around 2am and rig would not auto tune (using long wire thru KAT-100) and he could only run rig below 10w. That pretty much shut us down til I got up and hooked up spare FT897 but by then we had picked up some knarly line noise and we pulled the plug and played watersports w/YLs. At first I thought that I had not effectively tightened down the PA thermal pads but after sending email to Mr. Don, W3FPR, he suggested looking at the CALtPA. I found that it had reset itself to 255C! Once I set the temp to 30C, everything worked fine. My question is: Why did the rig jump up to 255C? Any thoughts and has anyone else experienced the same thing? 73 Tom K6CT ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. The simplest rule is don't increase the output of the K1 past the point at which the output of the 520 stops increasing or past 100 watts, whichever is less The 520's amplifier stages are supposed to be linear, so you simply want to avoid overdriving them. If you drive one of them into class C, you will see a sharpening of the keying and of course more harmonics will be generated. The scope can tell you about the keying, and I would assume that if you follow the rule above you will be OK with harmonics as well. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Pete: Hello everyone! I'm just toddling along with my build. The major problem so far has been fixing the bail to the bottom panel! What a beast! It's probably too late now, but the easy way to install the bail is to (temporarily) use longer screws to affix the bail and then to replace them, one at a time, with the shorter screws, once the bail has been secured. Anyway, it occurs to me (and has often occurred to me) why do we have to reform the pins on ICs? How come they aren't manufactured the right shape? I go into ESD-panic mode every time I have to re-form them and some have been a complete pain to match up to their socket. I wish I could respond as to why they must be manufactured with the pins 'sprung out'... seems they could just as easily be bent properly from the factory. But I'll bet some one WILL be able to offer a logical reason. Anybody got a fool-proof, first-time technique for this? Follow the instructions in the manual. Grasp the IC by its ends, press one side down onto the desktop (I often place it against a metal ruler, for added ESD protection, though I've NEVER damaged an IC as a result of ESD) and roll the IC inward a bit, to reform the leads. They also make pin straighteners, but they're not all that much better than just doing it by hand. RE: [Elecraft] Re: IC pins
At least one insertion machine I've seen that stuffs boards grabs the IC from the outside of all the pins and automatically squeezes to make the pins all exactly the right distance apart. It sets the I.C. into the pad holes in the board, then a little ram in the center shoves the I.C. down against the board. It's critical that the pins all be set a bit wide to be certain the pins all press against the grips so no pin gets bent under the IC when it's inserted. The machine only squeezes from the outside to start the insertion. If any pin was slightly bent inward a tad too far, it'd be shoved against the board and bent under the I.C. when the 'ram' pushed it down against the board. I believe the automatic insertion machines used to put I.C.s in sockets do the same. I go into ESD-panic mode every time I have to re-form them and some have been a complete pain to match up to their socket. This is just a wild guess. The IC's are manufactured for direct insertion in pc boards ( no sockets ) by automated machinery. The machines grip the ic's in a way that exactly positions the pins by pinching them inward a small amount. This would not work unless the leads were spaced a little too wide in the first place. *This is just a stab in the dark and I am sure there is someone on the list who actually *knows the reason. I wish I could respond as to why they must be manufactured with the pins 'sprung out'... seems they could just as easily be bent properly from the factory. But I'll bet some one WILL be able to offer a logical reason. This is actually an easy one. The pins are shaped that way in order to allow the placement machinery to grab the chip and properly place it. If the pins were straight, the chips would tend to fall out of the machine, causing lots of problems. It is interesting that some chips are not angled as much - specifically the side-brazed ceramic DIPS used in older EEPROMS. They are still angled, though. Anybody got a fool-proof, first-time technique for this? Follow the instructions in the manual. They also make pin straighteners, but they're not all that much better than just doing it by hand. There are IC insertion devices that clamp around the DIP packages and properly align the pins while you insert them into the PCB. No idea the cost, or even current availability. They used to be fairly common 15 or 20 years ago (remember that far back, Tom? ;-) I use the straighten it against the desk ritual. As far as I know, I haven't lost a chip in 30 years. But then during that time I lived in South Florida, Georgia and Sillycon Valley, where the static levels tend to be fairly low (as opposed to places like Washington DC, which has its own static level, but thats another story... ;-) -Jack Brindle, W6FB === ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] A minor C22 question
Mike, I don't have any measurement data to support it, but I do believe that the oscillators (BFO, PLL, VCO) can be influenced by temperature and the proximity of objects to the frequency determining components - the difference should be slight, but could account for 10 to 30 Hz in the end. Also, remember that CAL FIL must be run to for the results to be correct. Even if the filters are already correct, each BFO must be moved a notch and then moved back for the new values to be written. Failure to do that will look like your calibration efforts 'just didn't work right'. You are correct in saying that once the values are written into EEPROM, the reference oscillator is out of the picture - but those values only represent voltages which SHOULD produce a specific frequency - if the conditions around the frequency determining components of the oscillator are not the same as when the values were written, the resulting frequency may be a bit different. Now, I must admit that the differences are slight - but for those who would struggle to get things 'right on', you should realize that these factors will influence your results. 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - Not really an issue. Get C22 right with the cover off and right away do the cal pll before putting the cover on. After that it doesn't matter what happens when the cover is replaced 'cos it has no effect whatsoever on calibration. [Elecraft] For Sale: KXAT1
Ok, so I goofed: When I took my KX1 out after a number of months of non-use, the antenna tuner wasn't working. I figgered it was a problem with the tuner; I checked, reheated, rewound, checked some more and still no-go. So I ordered another KXAT1 and assembled that -- a lo and behold! it didn't work either. Turns out I had a bum MCU; a swift response by Elecraft and I was back in business. So now I have an extra KXAT1 which, of course, is surplus to my needs. It's for sale at $70 including shipping (USPS Priority Mail) and includes the manual. If you would like to have the benefit of my folly, please email me off list. Tnx es 73, Chris Kf6vci I have the Elecraft-branded version of the Hex-Key and also the BY-2 (and a couple of Vibroplexae). I personally never had any trouble with the BY-2 and was content with its feel, but decided I had to have the Elecraft name (oy!). But it's a really good paddle, the finest I have ever used. I have the contacts adjusted for a very tight feel and a very minimal movement of the fingers is required -- and it can certainly handle speeds which are but a fond memory for me (I'm certified at 35 wpm; alas, that was long ago). Another wierd behavior of the 28020 birdy is that is tunes the opposite of a normal cw signal and changes pitch in large steps. Re: FW: [Elecraft] OT - Way off topic, but Dell is giving away machines
AGP and PCI are going the way of ISA and are being replaced with PCI Express. The latter is a serial bus and comes in a variety of widths. For video you normally get a 16 or 32x PCI Express that has 16 or 32 high speed serial channels feeding the video card. It is at least an order of magnitude faster than AGP. Re: [Elecraft] Re: IC pins
If your local humidity is kept above 50 per cent RH, you can grasp the pins of any IC and gently squeeze them to close them to fit sockets. I usually lay them sideways on the desk top and put pressure on them, holding the plastic or ceramic body. This is the safest way. -Stuart K5KVH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Revisting audio after absence from the reflector
For my GMT logging, at Walmart I bought an LCD alarm clock with big numbers for time and date. Too bad there's no stock number on it. Placing the clock on the K2 top cover just behind the speaker grill, I discovered a couple db increase in audio and a flattening of audio response near the CW tone frequency. It was easier to hear CW. A better acoustic match? Blocked reflections from the wall behind? Experimentally the effect can be replicated with cupped hands or other objects to suggest a design for a simple reflector/horn made of wood. [Elecraft] successful tuning indicator installation in KX1
Tom: K6XX SMD tuning indicator kit arrived today. Started on it around 10PM and had it built, installed, aligned, and working by midnight. My only previous SMD soldering experience was the IC in a Rockmite. Only glitch I ran into was an unsoldered pin on the IC--I got low level LED light as soon as I powered up the rig, which went out when I injected the sidetone. A quick check under the magnifier found the problem. One note on your KX1 installation instructions--on p.3, item 15), the 6.8K resistor says (683) after it, when the part (and the parts list on p.1) is labelled 682. Only caused a minor tremor, well short of panic. Also, I used 24ga wire with a thicker jacket (Wireman 534 antenna wire) than the computer ribbon cable you recommend--worked OK but trickier to snake the wires into the correct orientation to allow the bottom cover/battery cases to fit. Thanks again for kitting this great addition to the KX1! 73 Eric N0HHS KX1 #670 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Fun question - Purchase price if K2/100 with optionsispurchased assembled
I agree with Adi. I'm sitting here with a check for $3,300 that arrived yesterday from the sale of my Orion to K9FLY. A ham in Germany got the Orion speaker, Inrad filter and microphone for $200. I took $280 and bought the KAT100-1 auto-tuner for my K2/100. The Orion has better ultimate selectivity, dual RX, general coverage, pseudo-dual-diversity and better SSB transmit capability and voice keyer. It is also large and heavy. You can fit four K2's inside an Orion. You have to press a button before you can change the RF gain, keyer speed or power level (PITA). I had both rigs side by side for 2 months and there was never a time under crowded contest conditions or deliberate jamming that the K2 didn't keep up with the Orion. Those were real world conditions. Whenever the Orion impressed me by pulling the VU4 out of the noise or a JA on 160 in a pileup I would switch over to the K2 and was even more amazed that I could pull it out on the little box too. A wired version under $2,000 would be reasonable. - Original Message - From: S55M [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, January 05, 2005 2:37 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Fun question - Purchase price if K2/100 with optionsispurchased assembled Do you compare this radio to an FT1000` an Orion, TS950SDX?
