[Elecraft] Elecraft n° 4681 alive and working!
Just a little thing before the chronicles... I've never got involved in HF because there was almost no possibility of build a serious rig (IMHO I think that buy a commercial radio and go to DX haunt is not too much HAM RADIO). Lurking on the Web I found Elecraft, read some stuff and got more and more tempted... Then the Order was sent On February 4th the Package with all the stuff has arrived. Yesterday night the rig became alive and working well inside the specs. What can I say Great RX at the very least Soon I will start with the assembly of the the SSB board, then the noise blanker, the DSP board and at last the 100 W amplifier. BTW the manuals are very precise and no part is missing from the bags (Good Job Cristine!). The construction is straight forward even for a newbie on the HF bands as I am . (But to be honest I've a certain exp. on SMD soldering for microwave transverters so the parts appears to be very big and easy to manage !!!) [Elecraft] K2 - NOISY POLLING
Does anyone else have a problem with noisy polling with their K2 when used with a computer logging program, and is there a cure for it? I have two K2/100s which both have the 160m, NB and DSP options and one has the SSB option. I am using N1MM Logger with an old desk-top (about 300MHz) computer under Windows 98 and when I listen to the SSB K2 on any band with the AF gain at minimum, I can hear a soft pulse every second or so. This does not increase as the AF Gain is advanced and normally the sound of signals, etc masks it, but it is slightly annoying when tuning on a very quiet band. I can just about hear it on my other K2 if I really listen hard for it but I don't think I would have noticed it on this K2 had I not first heard it on the SSB K2. The problem must therefore be something to do with the SSB K2. Gary Surrency suggested moving the ribbon cable between the K2 and K2/100 further away from the KSB2 unit and also try switching off the RTC (in the secondary menu). I have tried both and neither make any difference and Gary suggested I now ask on here. Thanks for any help. 73 de Chris, W4/G4BUE arse just installed the repaired K2 and my own K2 in a SO2R set-up with N1MM Logger for contesting and have noticed that the polling (at least I think that's what it is) is very noisy on the repaired K2 compared with my own K2. I hear a continual soft pulse about every second which does not increase as the AF gain is increased. When I disconnect the radio from N1MM Logger, it goes away. Is there anything I can do to reduce the volume of the polling, please? -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. RE: [Elecraft] K2 - NOISY POLLING
Chris, Just a wild guess, but you may want to check the cable between the K2 and the computer - make certain the cable shield is connected at the K2 end and is NOT connected at the computer end - if the shield is connected at both ends, you can get some induced currents on the cable, but I don't know how it might be coupled into the K2 audio. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- Does anyone else have a problem with noisy polling with their K2 when used with a computer logging program, and is there a cure for it? RE: [Elecraft] Opinions On K2 Sales Price
One good source is eBay. K2 #568 with KSB2, K160RX, KAT2, KIO2, KBT2, and KNB2 and firmare 2.01 went for $650. The auction ended early because the buyer took advantage of the seller's buy it now price. It probably could have sold for more given that it sold in less than a day at that price. K2 #1417 with KSB2, K160RX, KAT2, KBT2, and KAF2 with version 2 firmware went at auction for $860. There were four people bidding on it with the first serious bid at $750 -- another reason to believe #568 could have sold for more than $650. eBay only archives 30 days of completed items I think... Could be 60 days. If you watched over time you'd get a better idea. Maybe someone here keeps track of such things. I suggest selling on eBay rather than offering it for sale directly. My experience is you get a better price. I got $35 for an aviation calculator that you can buy new for $60. I would have sold it for $20 to anyone who asked. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - NOISY POLLING
Hello Chris - I am using my K2/100 with N1MM and do not notice the noise that you are referring to. I use the K2/100 with two laptops - one an old P1 266mhz with only 80 meg ram (yes, it works fine with N1MM as long as you don't have anything else running!). This old computer has a real RS-232 port. The reason I mention that is that my other laptop is a 2.6 gig with 512 meg ram, etc but NO serial port. I have to use a USB to serial converter cable with it. When I use that computer, I can hear the converter creating a slow pulsing broad rf spectrum that is receivable on all the rest of the rigs in the shack. This is true whether the K2/100 is connected to that computer or not. Now the interesting part is that when the K2/100 is connected to the converter, I cannot hear the noise in the K2 - only in the other rigs. BTW - the usb to serial converter works very nicely with N1MM. You might want to check to see if you have any ground loop between the K2 and the computer. I think the cable should be grounded at only one end to kill the ground loop. 73 es gud dx --don n4hh K2/100 #2028 KAT100, etc. etc. - Original Message - From: Chris Page [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, February 17, 2005 8:36 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K2 - NOISY POLLING Does anyone else have a problem with noisy polling with their K2 when used with a computer logging program, and is there a cure for it? [Elecraft] Final comments on # 4476 K2 Build
I have had K2 4467 completed now for a couple of weeks. I don?t want to take up too much Band Width, but I did want to make some final comments for the sake of potential builders. Before I got my K2 I started to get concerned reading the Elecraft Reflector and reading only problems from several builders. Overall the build went together very well. I ran into some problems that were mostly my inability to properly understand the written instructions in the manual. Additional guidance from Gary Surrency and the fine folks on the reflector got me back on track. During my Final Alignment of the K2, I had problems calibrating the 4 MHz Master Oscillator. I failed to understand that the procedure could and should be conducted several times to fine tune the calibration. The instructions were great and I only had to conduct the procedure about 4 times to get a near perfect match. During the build I also noticed a QSK thumb in the Speaker and Headset. I didn?t do anything to try and fix it and figured that I would get use to it. Well now a couple of weeks later and I can?t detect any QSK thump at all. I?ll write that up to Elecraft Mojo. During the KPA100 build I had a little concern when the resistance measurements for the Q1 and Q2 did not match the values posted in the manual. It turns out that the Finals are photo-sensitive and everything was fine when the measurements were taken without a bright light overhead. I have since added the following modules, K160RX, KSB2, KNB2, KDSP2, KPA100, and the K6XX SMD CW Tuning indicator courtesy of N0SS. Everything is running great. This is only the second kit I have built, my KX1 was the first. This was truly a great experience. [Elecraft] FOR SALE - Elecraft Special Edition HEXKEY Ser # E016
FOR SALE - Elecraft Special Edition Hexkey serial #E016. Key is wired up and ready to plug into a K2 (gold plated Radio Shack 1/8 stereo jack). The key is in like new condition and works great. Why am I selling it? My other key is a Schurr PROFI-2 which was put on the shelf for a few months while I used the HEXKEY exclusive. I really love both keys. Both have almost exactly the same great feel. The HEXKEY is very smooth and quiet with it's magnets in place of springs. The Schurr is as smooth but make a quiet clicking sound when in use. I tried the Schurr again after looking at it on the shelf for a few months and realized that it felt just as good as the HEXKEY. The Schurr looks better in solid brass so I'm selling the HEXKEY. Also I bought a new rig yesterday (sorry, not Elecraft) and am trying to make the price more palatable. Price: $165.- which includes an attached cable and connector and shipping. [Elecraft] Polling noise
I have an up-to-date K2 w/ the 100W amp. In the instructions it says you should slow the CAT update to once every 2-3 seconds to reduce notice of the slight noise you'll hear when it does a RX/TX on the CAT port. Sure enough, I can hear it but only in dummy load or when the band is *totally* quiet. During a contest?!?! Fuggetaboutit! I also hear wideband S3 noise around 14.203-9 MHz with the antenna disconnected I didn't hear before the 100W amp was installed, but I haven't investigated this at all yet. Re: [Elecraft] Polling noise
Depends on the noise. The computer I'm using for logging has no serial port and it uses a USB-Serial converter. Puts a nice signal on 14.195, the DX calling frequency. That's not Elecraft's fault. However, there are some birdies that are. Up at my friend's QTH, the background noise is so low that you can hear all sorts of things, like the spur the DSP puts on the 220 calling frequency when using the transverter. Others have found several in band. Yeah, there are birdies, just like the rest of my radios. -- Hisashi T Fujinaka - [EMAIL PROTECTED] BSEE(6/86) + BSChem(3/95) + BAEnglish(8/95) + MSCS(8/03) + $2.50 = latte ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K1 TX ALC problem
Folks : I just wanted to remind folks that if you run into problems with no TX ALC on the K1, after removing the KAT1, its likely because you forgot to move the two pin header at P3 to short pins 2 3. The symptoms are that you will see full power out regardless of the OUT menu setting and when using TUNE you will see P=0.1. This really threw me for a loop. I had the rig disassembled because I finally decided to change the VFO tuning range on my K1-4 to the narrower setting (ie substitute C2 for C2a and Crystal X3A for X3B. This necessitated the re-alignment of the PREMIX and RF filter settings for 30M and 40M (Note that changes in PREMIX and RF Filter settings for 30M impact 40M as well so it is necessary to also re-align 40m). Everything was going great until I attempted TX alignment on these two bands only to find that somehow my TX ALC functionality seemed to be missing. After looking at the K1 RF board schematic for a while I noticed the note under the RF Output Detector section of the schematic stating * If the KAT1 is installed, jumper P3 pins 2-3. If not jumper P# pins 1-2. Also anytime you remove the KAT1 don't forget the jumper wire between pins 2 and 10 on J2. This one is a bit harder to miss. I'm sure that I am not the first person to run into this but I just thought I would remind folks. Michael VE3WMB P.S. I am much happier with the narrow VFO tuning range. With the wider setting I found that the tuning was just too touchy for my preferences. P.P.S. I also want to warn folks about over tightening the nylon screw that holds the VFO inductor (toroid) in place. I managed to snap the head off of mine and had to order a replacement from Elecraft. You just want it to be snug enough to keep the toroid from moving around, no tighter. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] EPA QRP Club Polar Bear Moonlight Madness Event!
Full Moon Names: Harvest, Hunter, Wolf and . Sturgeon? By Joe Rao mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Special to SPACE.com posted: 07:00 am ET 14 February 2003 While the Harvest Moon rings a bell in most heads, some of the other monthly lunar names are nowhere near as well known. Think pink. And worm, and strawberries and wolves. Or how about Sturgeon? Full Moon names in the United States date back primarily to Native Americans who lived in what is now the northern and eastern United States. Those tribes of a few hundred years ago kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There were some variations in the Moon names, but in general the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England and westward to Lake Superior. European settlers followed their own customs and created some of their own names. Since the lunar (synodic) month is roughly 29.5 days in length on average, the dates of the full Moon shift from year to year. . Full Snow Moon - February Since the heaviest snow usually falls during this month, native tribes of the north and east most often called February's full Moon the Full Snow Moon. Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult. EPA QRP Club Polar Bear Moonlight Madness Event - February 22nd, 2005 Rain Date -- 2/23/2005 Time--- estimated times 6pm to 9pm (subject to change) A hardy bunch of EPA QRP members will brave the winter cold and head up to Pulpit Rock, PA on the AT on 2/22. Some will drive up and others will hike the two-mile trail straight up the mountain in the dark! Yes, a few of us will hike by the light of the Snow Moon. We will set up our radio gear and operate from the AT during a full moon in the dead of winter. If you make a contact with any of us (Polar Bear Operators), you can receive a beautiful award from us. Weather report for our journey is partly cloudy with temps in the 20s. On top of a mountain even worse! We'll do the hard part, but we need you to contact us! More to come later. 72, Ed, WA3WSJ Polar Bear Operator ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE: [Elecraft] K2 - NOISY POLLING
My radio was unusable until I added an isolation transformer between the mike input and audio output (1 each). Just used junk box transformers with no idea of the input/output impedance. The PC Sound card is very high impedance so no need to assume you need to have a 1:1 or 20K to 4 ohm, picked for their size (SMALL ) Signal level was such that I had to add a 100K/1K divider feeding the Sound card. Got rid of all noise except the noise from the oscillators in the PC and monitor. Since you end up adding the CAT-IO interface it is kind of hard to eliminate any ground return (and associated ground-loop) unless you also add an optical isolator. [Elecraft] Mic for sale
Hi all, I have for sale an Elecraft MD2 mic and TB1 stand. These are new (no boxes). The **only** reason for selling is they're just too big for my operating desk. Asking $50.00 plus 5 bucks to ship conus. Thanks, Lou - W6UR No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. [Elecraft] Re: K1-4 trimmer cap confusion -- an idea
I realize that you may not have seen my original post in its entirety as you may have read a cut version within someone else's reply to me. I did use the DMM and in my overtired stupor managed to actually misinterpret what I saw. I even made a phone call to Gary, and while on the line, I realized the error of my ways. Check, double check and check again. Thanks for taking the time to advise me, though. I always appreciate it. Re: [Elecraft] Polling noise
Todd: It doesn't sound like a bird to me, more like crickets Fortunately, it only happens when you display the DSP status, probably from serial bus activity... if it were there all the time, I'd be mad, since I spend a lot of time listening to 222.1 ;-) 73 DE WB7RSG Greg On Thu, 2005-02-17 at 09:28 -0800, Hisashi T Fujinaka wrote: Depends on the noise. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
