[Elecraft] K2 SSB problem
Hi group! I have a little problem with SSB it seems. During the contest last weekend someone told me I had frequency modulation on my signal. Not knowing what this should mean I at least thought I would check the signal when bands are quieter. I just did. And although the audio sounds ok there is maybe a little problem. Sending a 1kHz audio signal the receiving station could hear the same signal at +1kHz and -1kHz with -20dB max. These signals should be at least -40dB, correct? Question. How do I fix this? Thanks! Re: [Elecraft] Broken relay in KAT2
Tom and Don, I think the problem has cured itself. Now only the ant1 external meter reads power when ant1 is selected. Before both ant1 and ant2 were reading power when ant1 was selected. There's no indicator on ant1, just on ant2. I was mistaken about that. Tnx for the response. At 07:54 AM 4/1/2005, Tom Hammond wrote: Charles: I'm not aware of ANY 'signaling' in the KAT2 which 'senses' relay position. As a result, even though the relay might be stuck, there's NO REASON I can think of that the indicator would remain on ANT1 unless the logic is not telling the relay to switch... e.g. the logic should still think ANT2 has been selected and it should still illuminate the ANT2 LED regardless of whether the relay switched or not! 73, Tom N0SS At 08:40 PM 3/31/05, you wrote: Hi, One of the relays in my KAT2 is stuck or a relay contact is shorted. When you select antenna 1 it is ok. When you select antenna 2 both antennas are selected (bad), and the indicator stays on Ant1. I guess replacing the relay is necessary. I don't know why it stuck. I first noticed it this morning while running the 5 watt beacon on 14102 KHz testing my EH antenna against my Hustler 6BTV vertical. Both external SWR meters read and the antenna was detuned. The beacon software is not supposed to hot switch, and the SWR on both antennas is less than 1.8:1. I have been running the beacon for over a month, and it switches antennas from 1 to 2 and back to 1 every 5 minutes. We have had only one lightning storm since the summer, and that was about a month ago. My K2 is S/N 462, but it has not seen hard or frequent use. Seems the relays should be good for more cycles than that. Any suggestions which relay is malfunctioning or why? 73, Chas, W1CG ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE: [Elecraft] K2 SSB problem
Gerhard, There could be a problem, or there may be no problem at all. What is the audio source and level that you are driving into the mic jack? If it is not a pure sine wave or the level is too high, it will have harmonics or (if too high a level) can cause harmonics if the balanced modulator is being overdriven. Sorry, but there is just not enough information in your note to allow me to venture even a guess. In any case, harmonics of the modulating audio are not any indication of frequency modulation - frequency modulation would cause a variation in the frequency of the carrier plus/minus the modulating frequency. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Gerhard Schwanz Sent: Friday, April 01, 2005 4:25 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K2 SSB problem Hi group! Tnx for the feedback. Want to make it as seamless as possible. Don't want to have to tune anything. If you have something like the PIC-EL kit from AmQRP already, then the PIC option may be the easiest to work with first. From what I've read a lot of the robot folks seem to like the stamp approach. Please reply off-reflector. I recently had the opportunity to take apart a big old Ricoh copy machine. Google gets nothing on either of these numbers. It has 6 wires coming out of it. On the basis of this, and the 'coggy' feel when I turn the shaft, I think that it is a permanent-magnet unipolar stepper motor. I want to build a remotely tuned very QRO L-network antenna tuner (I already have a large rotary inductor and capacitor). What I want to do is use this stepper to turn the capacitor to preset positions. Once the capacitor is set, I will be able to drive the inductor with a simple geared motor and just tune for lowest SWR. Reading material on stepper motor control systems has my head spinning! Is there some kind of simple off-the-shelf controller that I can get that will do most of the work? What I would REALLY like would be to just turn a local knob to adjust the capacitor (sort of like the way a selsyn acts), but there may be other approaches. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA

I still have the option of switching in fixed value caps to change the band segment to have a decent swr. Tony, You may have already considered and rejected this, but have you considered the old zener diode/relay stacking method to switch in caps/inductances - you control the number of relays switched by the voltage applied. RE: [Elecraft] Re: KAT2: functional without proper power/SWRcalibration?
Andrew, The KAT2 does use the SWR readings for determining the best match, and it uses the power calibration to determine the power output. So, yes it should be calibrated. The K2 will function, but the power output may be very incorrect and the antenna match obtained will not be correct. You can build an RF Probe easily from a diode (preferably germanium - like a 1N34A), a capacitor and a resistor. If you keep the frequency to 40 meters and below (which is perfectly adequate for the purpose), it will be sufficiently accurate by just connecting your DMM probe to the resistor end and ground - no need for the RG174 coax leads. There is a schematic in the back of the K2 manual that will tell you how to connect the 3 parts. Use a short ground and connect it directly across your 50 ohm dummy load. You WILL have to have a good 50 ohm dummy load to do this accurately, but the dummy load can be easily checked with an antenna analyzer, or even a simple 50 ohm SWR meter. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- I just finished building the KAT2 internal auto antenna tuner for my K2. After really beating up some T1's to see what they'd take, it was found the original transformer can run warm enough to cause the bridge of work incorrectly under some conditions on the lower bands. Those two resistors are very easy to get to. Remove T2 first and you'll find one of them right next to the row of inductors near the BNC end on top of the board, and the other one on the bottom of the board near the edge between the BNC connectors. They are well away from any sensitive relays or other such parts. You'll find T2 with two stacked cores a tight fit, but it does fit FB and will run very cool under all normal conditions on any band. Follow the procedure in the errata in which you solder one end of the green primary winding in before installing the transformer and it'll go in easily. BE SURE to wind T2 with EIGHT turns. I understand that a few of the errata sheets may have escaped saying seven by mistake. That transformer gets EIGHT turns just as shown in the picture and the same as in the original T2 you are removing. Now your T1 will be even more robust than ever. [Elecraft] Posting rejection and other facts of life
From: Julian, G4ILO [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have no idea why my reply to another posting looked like spam, but there is no excuse for some brain-dead piece of software rejecting posts to a members-only ... Wow! With all due respect, it sounds like it's a good time to take a walk around the block. I don't think Elecraft ever said anything about guaranteeing the performance of the mailing list, or that there's any obligation for them to even READ the mailing list. I think pounding ones shoe on the table because one posting didn't show up, is a completely unreasonable justification for starting another mailing list (which assureadly will have the exact same chance of rejecting a posting) and certainly not something Elecraft is responsible for. I dare say my comment is no great loss to the group, but perhaps there is some merit in the idea of setting up an alternative list, after all. Because of a missing posting? You've got to be kidding. RE: [Elecraft] Posting rejection and other facts of life
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 I must sound my 2 cents on this. The mailing list is hosted on a sever that Elecraft does not control. Therefore they do not have the final say so on spam filtering of said server. I have had several mailing list post binned by my pop host because of spam filtering, but got it Worked out and everything is fine now. So raising an uproar and talking about setting up an alternate list is a bit much. But if you feel so spited that you must continue ranting about the quality of missing one post Then you could try http://groups.yahoo.com/group/elecraft/ Probably will not have the same quality and quantity of people there (much larger base already on this list) But this is a free choice list and NET so do as you will. As for me, a post goes elsewhere, doesn't get posted, sorted to SPAM, or even gets lost completely, well that Can happen on this wonderful collection of hardware we call the Internet. My advice, take a few breathes, come down from your high horse and realize, this is just a hobby and your post probably Wasn't the end all beat all post of the century. Try to repost if you wish and move along your merry way. Well enough from my spleen And I think I went over 2 cents as well HI HI As for me, this reflector is a wonderful place to have any and all questions I have had answered, even before I need to ask them As the case is most times (plus a great back reference when you have such a LARGE archive as I have here, or if I must the List Archive on the net) Eric, Wayne and the gang at Elecraft do a wonderful job providing us with great radios and accessories, and do a bang-up job here on the reflector as well answering questions and what not. A few of my net reports have been kicked out of the system. There are certain words which one should not use since they appear Spam like. The one both Julian and I used which is on the list is buy. I asked Eric about the list so I could avoid using the proscribed words but he told me he did not have access to it. The list is further up the chain than him. Once I reworded my sentence to avoid the word buy the net report went through just fine. 73, Kevin. KD5ONS P.S. Buy needs to be in association with some other word (which I have forgotten). The transverter RCA jacks on the rear panel (heat sink) are attached to the 60 meter PC board similar to the way the receiving antenna jack is attached to the 160 meter PC board. On page 43 near the top left a note similar to that for reinstalling the 160 meter PC board should be made for the 60 meter PC board. If the 60 meter PC board is not disconnected from the RF board you are going to break or damage it or it's wiring connected to the transverter RCA jacks. Have a great day! Jim, AB0UK __ Yahoo! RE: [Elecraft] help on alignment and test, part II
LLoyd, How old is your K2 kit? Take a look at the MPS5179s on the Control Board at Q9 and Q10 - if they are blue (rather than black), they are the cause of your problem. Elecraft will supply replacements for you if they are the blue-faced ones. In the meantime, you can use 2Ns in their place if you want to get up and running quickly (borrow the 2 2Ns from the later part of the RF board aseembly). Other than the above 2N5179 problem or an improperly constructed counter probe, I can't think of any reason you should not see proper readings on the CAL FCTR display. Check the connection of your probe to the Control Board - the shield should be closest to the left side panel - should you have it backwards, it will behave as you have described. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- OK, I got to p.60. Anyway I decided I wanted a QRO rig and bought an IC-706MKIIG about a month ago. Installed the FL-100 CW filter and was ready for the DX. I took my K2 out of service to give the new 706 a try. I didn't like the RX from the start. The audio with the CW filter and or the DSP is just annoying. It was very noisy, like S9 noise level almost continually. The only way I could manage the noise was by turning on the attenuator. Then the radio was even more deaf than before. Fellows I gave the radio a real good try. I suffered with it for over a month. Tonight while listening on low end of 40 meters, with the usual S8-9 noise and hearing only a few strong signals, I thought why am I doing this to myself. I took the 706 out and put the K2 in the same spot. NO NOISE...just good clean signals. It's really unbelievable how quiet the K2 RX really is. One lesson learned, if you have a good thing stick with it. The other thing..the 706 has to go. I just wanted to share this with someone. RE: [Elecraft] KAT2 manual: inconsistancy?
Andrew, Yes, I believe the manual is inconsistant on that point. Just make certain there is one lockwasher between the standoff and the PC board (not 2) - and it doesn't matter which end of the standoff has the lockwasher next to the PC board - do it whichever way is better for you. I prefer to put the lockwasher next to the standoff on the conrol board rather than 'fiddlin' with a lockwasher between the standoff and the board when putting the assembly together. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- KAT2 manual, Rev D, March 22 2001: Page 6 instructs me to install standoffs at each end of the Control board -- on the component side -- with the split lock washer between the standoff and the PC board, and screws coming up from the non-component side: I standoff I I -- lockwasher PC board I screw Later, on page 12, when the L-C board is connected to the Control board, the manual says to secure the L-C board to the Control board's standoffs (above), with lock washers going between the standoffs and the PC board, *NOT* between the PC board and screws as on the Control board. --- ...that last bit does not agree with what the manual said to do on p.6. Right? Or am I missing something, maybe cleared up in the errata sheets...? Well, it is 1:12 a.m. after all, maybe I'm just tired. --Andrew ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Reciever
Yeah, I went the other way, from the 706MKIIG - K2 and I thought the K2 was broken until I checked it with a signal generator. :) On Fri, 1 Apr 2005, Brent Sutphin WB4X wrote: I have had K2 #2571 from its birth about three years ago.
