RE: [Elecraft] Important K3 News
You don't have to be connected to the internet at the time you update the radio. There's a procedure described in the K3 Utility's Help (see Manual File Transfer) that describes using an internet browser or File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client to copy firmware files from Elecraft's server onto some removable device such as USB flash drive or a floppy diskette (or burn your own CD). You then carry that device to the K3 and perform the firmware update there. Elecraft will mail you a CD for a fee, but the normal distribution method is by making firmware available at an FTP server. The K3 Utility can act as an FTP client to copy files from Elecraft to the PC. Its second function is to send firmware from files from the PC to the K3. The first FTP part can be performed by your favorite web browser. The second step doesn't require internet connectivity. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy Sent: Saturday, November 17, 2007 10:06 PM To: Elecraft Discussion List Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Important K3 News Sorry if this has already been asked, am I right to assume that K3 firmware updates are or will be available by means other than downloading via the Internet e.g. by purchasing updated ROM chip(s) from time to time? Wayne has so far fixed bugs the same day they I have reported them. None have been show-stoppers, just CAT-related things. There will be many enhancements, but so far I am more than impressed with the turnaround and with Elecraft's responses here and off-list. It could not be any better. I have made two 'unofficial' hardware modifications (1) To put a beefy headphone jack at the rear and (2) Re-package the High Voltage bias supply in a screened box sitting on the KPA100 pcb with lead filtering to get rid of many of the receiver birdies. If I order a K3 early next year assuming that any serious bugs have been dealt with, I would like to think that I would not need to install updates very often, if at all. In fact, you can access the FTP site directly from within the K3 Utility Help screen if you wish - just click on the link (ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/K3/firmware) given in the Manual File Transfer help topic. An instance of Windows file explorer should appear (framed within the help screen) displaying the files, and then you may highlight them all, right click and use Copy to Folder to put them where you wish. No special FTP client is required in this case, which should work on Windows XP and Vista, but of course the PC must be connected to the internet. The KBPF3 is a band-pass filter PC board. It doesn't have anything to do with the 5 crystal filter slots. You can install a KBPF3 on the RF board and still have room for 5 crystal filters. This applies to the subreceiver, too, in keeping with our goal of identical main/sub receiver performance and functionality. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. If you have stereo headphones and/or two speakers plugged into your K3, you can use the AFX (audio effects) function. This creates a simulated stereo or binaural audio space that is hard to describe -- you'll just have to try it :) For some operators it reduces listening fatigue when compared to monophonic audio, and can even help improve signal copy. To use AFX, simply tap the AFX switch (just above the VFO B knob). You can select different AFX variations using the AFX MD menu entry (MAIN menu). I prefer DELAY 5, which is the default. BIN creates binaural audio via phase shifting, while DELAY1-5 simulate stereo using a short delay between the left and right channels. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I've been playing hunt and pounce sporadically on SS with K3 #23. Re: [Elecraft] K3 operating tip: AFX (audio effects)
I became interested in this feature after reading the binaural receiver article in the ARRL handbook, and at Pacificon it was the first demo I asked for on the K3. Let me say I am not an experienced SSB contester, but I did enjoy this feature in the ARRL Sweepstakes yesterday and today. I used Delay 5, not IQ, because it had a more pronounced effect. Noise seemed more separated from signal with it on, but it didn't make the noise go away, just sound separate. In fact, compared to NR, I prefer it for careful listening, at least so far. I thought I found it tiring after a while and would turn it off, and notice the noise level went down, but then the signal went down too, and signals were harder to distinguish from noise. So I turned it back on. Eventually I realized that either off or on was eventually tiring (here's my lack of SSB contest experience showing), and cycling itoff and on occasionally was what reduced fatigue. All in all, an interesting and useful feature that will take me some time to figure out exactly how it works best for me, but I wouldn't want to be without it. Re: [Elecraft] Newbie Question re: SSB
This may or may not answer the question, and is certainly only one ham's opinion. I operated both Sweepstakes - CW and Phone. Did this on purpose, to compare the K3's operation in both regimes. Contests like this can be intense, and Q's are difficult in the best of conditions because of band crowding. BCI on 40m doesn't help much either. Picking a contest to get one's feet wet with a new rig isn't a half-bad way to go. You are faced with all the normal problems, greatly intensified and magnified in a way that's hard to describe - but it's sort of like a time-compression effect. It's the best way to get yourself acclimated to a new transceiver and make the most of its best features, because you have to make adjustments quickly and have it come out right the first time. I found the K3 easy to use in both CW and Phone contests. After a few miscues, I was quickly dialing in the DSP filter, notches (needed a lot in CW), etc. The AFX set to Delay 3 or 4 helped a lot, both on CW and SSB. Now ease of use is one thing, but what did I accomplish? CW: Operated 2.5 hours - 48 Q's. SSB: Operated 4 hours - 109 Q's. Of the two, I enjoyed the CW contest more. My CW skills need sharpening, that's for sure. But I can tell you that the K3 makes it easy to bring them up to par. I have the plain-Jane K3/10 with only the 2.7 KHz roofing filter. The antenna is a 195 foot long wire, end-fed with an MFJ tuner. It's only up about 30 feet. No amplifier except what's in the exciter. Yeah - we're near the bottom of the sunspot cycle, but so what? If 12 Watts on a Wet Noodle antenna works, the bottom is not as bad as I remember from 1976 or so. I can say now with certainty that he K3 makes even the bottom of the cycle a joy to operate in - and in any mode you care to choose. 73, matt - WA6EGJ K3 #24 On Sun, 18 Nov 2007 15:44:11 -0500, you wrote: I understand that Elecraft transceivers to date have really been a CW ops dream, which leads me to the following question re the K3: Will phone (SSB) operators find this rig as wonderful with regard to voice as CW operators do with CW? That doesn't require the frequency coverage to be restricted (although BR68 certainly did, for certain licence classes, and I believe that is still the intent, even if the way it is now worded is rather opaque. 3 points: 1) The CE Marking is involves self-certification and not approval by a regulator or other third party. 2) Imho, the CE Marking for the K3 would have to apply to frequencies out side of the HAM bands (e.g. KBPF3 is installed) or be invalid in some configurations. 3) The CE Marking does not require band limits on the TX but some countries on the planet Earth do. Afaik some of them check for the band limits on equipment entering the country and confiscate rigs without the correct limiting. I remember reading mails on the reflector from hams who had high hopes for the K3 because Elecraft was implementing band limits for their country. So back to my original question: What happens if my K3, with US band limits, wants to accompany me to such a country? [Elecraft] KSB2 sidetone?
Even though I built and installed a KSB2 a year or so ago, this week is the first time I've actually used it. I have to admit, phone operation is sort of fun, though I'm not likely to spend much time outside contests doing it - altogether too much like a telephone. One question: there doesn't seem to be any sidetone in the headset when I transmit. I made some recordings of my audio output (to play back for W7GH, who was also testing out his KSB2), and we both noticed that there is some ... murmuring when I'm transmitting, but nothing intelligible. I thought the lack of sidetone would be an issue, but it doesn't seem to be. Still, I'm curious - what's the murmuring?
