[Elecraft] KX1 with 30/80 option - band cycling now limited to 7/10/14

2011-04-19 Thread JONES, George
I have had this KX1 for a while. This fault was noted (maybe arose)
during a recent garden op. session.
Bands 7/10/20 are all operational selectable as normal, but 3.5 is skipped
completely.

I acquired this little gem ready built fully working, so am a bit wary of
taking it apart.
Before I do, I am wondering if there are any stock faults to look out for ?

[Elecraft] KPA500 ventilation clearance

2011-04-19 Thread Jim McDonald
I appreciated the opportunity to see the KPA500 at Visalia last weekend but
forgot to ask about the clearance required for ventilation. I have a shelf
above my K3 (and soon P3) that is used to support monitors, etc. It has 7
of space under it, so I'm wondering if that's adequate to properly ventilate
the KPA500.

2011-04-19 Thread Don Wilhelm
  George,

Check the menu - Scroll to either the b30 or b80 (you will only see
one or the other), if it is b30 tap the rightmost button to change to
b30. Then HOLD the Edit button. If the parameter is off, turn the
VFO knob to On and tap the MENU button twice to exit. You should now
have all 4 bands.

That information is in the KXB3080 manual.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Manual Updates

2011-04-19 Thread Fred Townsend
Gentlemen it would seem there are two issues here. Hard copy and soft copy. Let
me address soft copy first.

The software industry has a similar problem where it deals with dynamic code
and its documentation. Bug lists are maintained but not generally published.
Instead new code and documentation is released weekly. The user can download
the latest code and documentation 24/7. There is no need to chase a problem
through the bug lists (errata) because the docs are never more than a week old.
Also, it is much easier to use the computer search function on a PDF than
scanning a paper copy of an obsolescent doc. If hard copy is needed the end
user can print it off the PDF.

Question: Is there any reason why corrected docs can't be immediately made
available for download instead of publishing errata lists?

As far as hard copy manuals to be supplied with purchased hardware goes there
are on demand printing services where an e-message notifies the printer of the
document type and the customer's snail mail address upon sale. The printer
automatically downloads the latest docs and prints a one off copy and addresses
the snail mail envelope, prints the postage, and sends the bound document off
by snail mail at USPS library book rate. Usually the manual will arrive before
the hardware.

I suspect this type of service is too expensive for this type manufacturing but
it does have the savings of not needing to maintain a manual stock at the
factory.

One man's opinion.

Bill - If Elecraft had printed off 1000 copies of the manual, it would have
been a waste of paper and the rain forest for the manuals to have been pulped
and new ones printed when a couple of sheets of updates could be produced
instead. OTOH, a new manual could be produced and the price of the P3 could be
increased accordingly - I think not.

If anyone is able to assemble a P3, surely it's not beyond their capability to
make the appropriate changes to the manual.

[Grumpy mode off]

Enjoy your P3, Bill.

In a recent message, Bill Henderson b...@brofcally.plus.com writes
Why on earth did it come with a manual and a list of errata that is
supposed
to be cut and pasted to bring the manual up to date? Surely, it wouldn’t have
been much more time consuming for you to have made the changes to the manual
itself.

[Elecraft] K3 - Value on the used market?

2011-04-19 Thread Keith Darwin
Hi folks,

After many years of owning my K3, I'm considering selling it. What is their
value on the used market? Mine is one of the early factory-built units (SN
711) with zero HW mods. Has a 1 KHz and 400 HZ 8-pole CW filters and the
KPA-100 power amp. It is in mint condition, having spent the vast majority
of it's life powered off and stored under a cover.

I think new cost for my rig is $2400 or $2500. Are these rigs fetching 90%
of new cost? 80%? 70%?

Yes, this will require greater resources on the part of Elecraft at the
expense of supporting and the introduction of new products.

The present system of updates has worked well since 1999. If it beyond
the capability of any qualified radio amateur to go through the manual
and make the relevant changes, I despair.

Figure how to have the AMP exhaust behind the monitors.

[Elecraft] Engraved Brass Plates for Attachment to K3

Recently, as I was surfing the net, I saw that someone in the amateur radio

for some unknown reason I failed to do so. My K3 kit with P3 Panadapter is on
its way to papa, and I would surely love to put my “Mark” of proud ownership on
it with a shiny brass plate of authenticity.

At your earliest convenience, I would appreciate anyone’s assistance in
recovering the website for me. Thank you and...

Hi

normally try to keep errata down to a maximum of 1 page. That’s good enough

I will wait for the updated PDF file to appear on their web site and I’ll
print it off.

However, it would be better if the online version could be updated more
often

[Elecraft] KPA500 First run sold out?

2011-04-19 Thread Bruce Beford
The order form for the KPA500 indicates that after the first run sells out,
the next batch will begin shipping in July. Has there been an announcement
that we are at that point yet? Curious if I ordered today, if it would be in
the first production run or not.

[Elecraft] The Good Kind of IMD for CW buffs

2011-04-19 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
For CW enthusiasts interested in an unusual contact, K6KPH, the amateur
station of the Maritime Radio Historical Society, will be on the air for
this year's International Marconi Day on Saturday 30 April.

K6KPH will use the transmitters of ex-Marconi, ex-RCA coast station KPH at
the 1913 Marconi site in Bolinas, California. Operators will be at the 1929
ex-RCA receive site at Point Reyes, California.

Several volunteer operators, will be manning the K6KPH operating positions.
Among these will be ace operator Rick Wahl, ex-NMC, ex-KPH.

Hours of operation:

1700 - 2359GMT

Frequencies:

3550.0
7050.0
14050.0
21050.0

Transmitters will be Henry commercial HF5000D units except for 7050.0 which
will be using a 1950s vintage RCA transmitter. All transmitters will be
throttled back to 1.5kW.

Visitors are welcome. The receive site is located at 17400 Sir Francis Drake
Blvd., Inverness, California (the station is actually well past Inverness
but that's the town name that works with most on-line mapping programs).

Coast station KSM will also be on the air with the usual press and weather
service on all Morse and RTTY frequencies.

For details on IMD see:

http://www.gb4imd.org.uk/

For details on K6KPH and KSM including the Morse press/weather and RTTY
frequencies see:

KFS was in the SF Bay area too. I used to bump into reps from KFS coming
aboard ships in the S.F. bay promoting their station.

Here's a link to a story about the shut-down of the Globe Wireless stations
including KFS:

I don't know about station WPD.

[Elecraft] OT: The Good Kind of IMD for CW buffs

2011-04-19 Thread Ken - K0PP

FCC site says the WPD license expired in 1996. Would have
expected it to been gone long ago. Google Earth shows an
asphalt lot at 1330 McKay St where it was. Had two self-
supporting towers and a ship's console for a station.

[Elecraft] P3

2011-04-19 Thread Marc
For experienced users, I am interested in learning
the stability of the P3. I can visualize a 10 hz move.
Mine moves appx 10-25 hz from cold startup. It
is currently tied to the K3.

At first I thought it was the K3, but it does the
same thing with an nist source.

Would like to center a CW carrier on the center line
in the 2khz BW position.

This position is useful on CW and narrow SSB.

Any thoughts? Marc, KE2BP

[Elecraft] Trying to get LP-100 PLOT to make K3 output carrier

2011-04-19 Thread Jim Stafford
Anyone done this. I did it a long time ago with an ICOM but have
never gotten the K3 to key. It changes the frequency and mode, etc
so I know the connection is good but I've tried DTR RTS and RTS DTR on
the PTT-KEY
option but to no avail. There is only a K2 method of interfacing between
rig and software so that may not be the best for the K3.

I have also tried using the Kenwood interfacing to the rig. It appears to
key the K3, the red light comes on, but does not KEY the rig to get
output power. I can at that point during the 1 second intervals, key
the rig manually and get a data point for each and a plot for the band.
Just can't
get it to work all automatically.

Thoughts?
