[Elecraft] KX3 Mic input problem
The KX3 mic input uses a multi barrel jack plug which enables up down channel changing using buttons on the hand mic. I an regular stereo jack is placed into the socket, the radios VFO start to change continuously. To use digital modes, I need to use the mic input to connect to my sound card. There appears to be a setting on the Configuration menu to turn off the up/down and PTT but this is non functional. When selected on the menu by VFOB the options on VFO A say n/a. So the question is - how do I provide an input to the Mic socket on the KX3 without having this problem? Does anyone know of a solution to this issue. 73 HughEI9KF __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Mic input problem
Hugh - I would have thought the best solution would be to buy the correct 4-pole 3.5mm jack plug. These are a standard item available from all good component suppliers. In the UK we have them at Maplin.co.uk under part number QT65V. Perhaps a search on eBay might bring up a supplier nearer you. Shorting out connections on a jack socket cannot be a good thing by using the wrong sort of plug. 73 de David G4DMP In a recent message, Hugh Bradley hughbrad...@gmail.com writes The KX3 mic input uses a multi barrel jack plug which enables up down channel changing using buttons on the hand mic. Re: [Elecraft] Trouble with Auto-Spot (K3)
Hi Phil, I have version 4.60 firmware and I used Auto Spot extensively in the ARRL DX contest last month. Perhaps 500 times and it worked every time. It is my favorite K3 feature. I didn't have the finest tuning engaged. I had two digits after the decimal point showing. Perhaps Auto Spot's effectiveness is influenced by the CWT threshold setting. Mine is set to THR=2. You can see this setting by holding the CWT button and you can change it by turning VFO-A. 73, Mike K2MK Phil Hystad-3 wrote I had the same problem the other day. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Build Continuing Reflection Point (Page 6)
Nick, This reflects the sad state of the US psyche. To generations past buy or buy assembled would not even be considered. Their first reaction to a need was to make something from what materials they had on hand. Clearly this is anti-consumerism and not politically correct these days. Today the answer to everything is to buy. Making anything has become lost. Too bad, there is a lot of knowledge and satisfaction to be gained by making stuff. Also the present generation blogs everything. I have mixed feelings on this. It depends upon the quality of the blog and whether or not it has been done 100's of times before. My general impression of blogs is that they are Internet Pollution. Same for 95% of Youtube. Like all generalizations this one is false sometimes. I do know almost all advertising $$ is spent targeting 15-40 year olds. This is because those outside this range don't buy much. Perhaps it is the 40+ category that wear it out, use it up, do without or make it 73 de Brian/K3KO On 3/13/2013 14:02, Nick Palomba wrote: Elecraft K3 Build Continuing Reflection Point Ironically Building the Elecraft K3 has let me to reflect. Re: [Elecraft] Wait For The K4 Direct RF Sampled SDR?
No need to speculate. There is no such project underway at Elecraft. Direct RF-sampling receivers, for all their technology, still lag well behind the K3 in blocking dynamic range, and probably will continue to for years to come. You will never get a positive response from those that have no idea what they are missing. Consumerism (the raw, ugly kind) rules the markets today, not creativity or the need to build. Re: [Elecraft] Wait For The K4 Direct RF Sampled SDR?
I'm sort of curious about what Flex is doing with their new radio. The heart of it has to be a very good A/D converter, but the best thing I'm aware of is an Analog Devices 16 bit, 100 Msp/s one that ain't exactly cheap. To approach the dynamic range in the KX3 and the K3, 16 bits may be a might short. I, too, believe that direct sampling and high dynamic range is still a bit off particularly if you want to be able to afford one. I like the magic of my KX3 when used with NaP3 and a 24 bit, ASIO compliant sound card. As a practical matter, it serves for the 95% situations. those last five will include a lightning storm over my house or someone like W3LPL moving next door. 73, Barry K3NDM On 3/13/2013 9:49 AM, Wayne Burdick wrote: No need to speculate. Re: [Elecraft] K2-KAT2
Hans, If you are getting HiCur messages, you may not have a proper connection through the KAT2 to the dummy load. Be certain the crimp pins of J7 are inserted correctly. Looking at the rectangular holes in J7, you should see the crimp pins flat against the inside of the housing (no space), and the latching tabs on the crimp pins should be visible if you push on the wires. If the crimp pins are inserted correctly, you should be able to move the crimp pins slightly and see the ends of the latching tabs. If there is not a small bit of movement, the pins are not inserted correctly. The shield side of J7 must be closer to the K2 right side panel than the center conductor. The 000 indication may be due to no power through the wattmeter (T1 and associated components) of the KAT2 (that will also cause HiCur messages from the K2), and that condition could be due to either incorrect connections at J7 or improper winding and connection of T1. Note, the C55 null adjustment requires that power is flowing through the wattmeter. Check T1 against the diagram in the manual - it must be *exactly* as indicated. Make certain it is not wound in reverse from the diagram and that the leads are in the correct solder pads. The 1 turn winding (green wire) must also be correctly in place. Incorrect winding of T1 is the most common builder error for the KAT2. Try inserting wires into the J7 housing to make contact with the crimp pins and measure the resistance with your DMM. The resistance should be the same as your dummy load. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/13/2013 10:23 AM, Hans Elfelt Bonnesen wrote: K2 - KAT2- Every reading and function seems to be ok UNTIL page 17 – square five in Bridge Null Adjustment (C55): After placing the K2 in CALn and exiting that setting by pressing MENU twice, I’m ready to put the K2 in TUNE mode: With the R1 and R2 set fully clockwise, and C55 positioned parallel to the rear panel edge and pressing TUNE I get: ”000 followed briefly by HI-cur + atu. Ron D'Eau Claire stated: Never be staggered by the ignorance of others, nor allow it to influence your thinking. Well stated. I would add to the discussion, young people in particular are not as fixed in their mindset as some older folks are. It is for this reason I am working Maker Faire this year along with our OCRA (Orange County Radio Amateurs) club, and have been surprised and encouraged by the number of young people actually making all sorts of things! I think it is a great idea to continue to advertise Amateur Radio and kit building, despite the incredulous reaction you will get from the public in general. How many times have YOU been asked: Ham radio? People still do that? Don't they know about cell phones? There is power in actually knowing how things work, and young people sometimes get it. Re: [Elecraft] Wait For The K4 Direct RF Sampled SDR?
Maybe not a K4 but why not a K2A? Not to do a Flex 6000 or whatever but is there a way to replace the current mixer, direct conversion design with an (older, cheaper) direct sampling config? And leave most of the remainder of the design in place. Be a chance to explore some new tech and Elecraft could still keep most of the radio a true kit. Mike W5FTD No need to speculate. There is no such project underway at Elecraft. Direct RF-sampling receivers, for all their technology, still lag well behind the K3 in blocking dynamic range, and probably will continue to for years to come. We're quite happy with our superhet architecture. Also, any advancement we make to the K3 will be retrofittable to existing K3s, so your investment is safe. 73, Wayne N6KR l __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I tuned for them, but could hear only an occasional syllable through S6 noise. Nothing to lose -- I turned on both NB and NR and twiddled the knobs. Lo and behold, I could copy the op! Poorly, but enough to make it worth calling him. And sure enough!! So I owe that QSO entirely to the excellent noise handling of the K3. Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 DC power
Milt, The K3/0 power input is the normal K3 12v power output jack. Because this is an RCA jack, you might want to consider making an adapter cable that has a different jack (APP or other jack). If you leave the RCA plug connected to the K3/0 at all times, there is no problem, but I do not like the prospect of having an RCA plug on my workbench with its exposed +12V pin. As I said, if that plug is always inserted into the K2/0, everything is safe, but if you are in the habit of disconnecting the power plug to the K3/0, make an adapter and leave the adapter connected to the K3/0 - all that is my personal safety consideration. Several QRP kits also use an RCA plug for 12v power input, so the K3/0 implementation is not that unusual. Leave the RCA plug connected and disconnect the power supply end for safety. . 73, Don W3FPR On 3/13/2013 6:26 PM, Milt -- N5IA wrote: All, I was looking at the pictorial diagram of the connections for the K3/0 to a RemoteRig control unit in the K3/0 on line Owner's manual. Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 DC power
Hello Don, Thanks for the prompt reply. How strange; and no mention of it anywhere in the manual. I totally understand your explanation. I am looking at the list of cables that are supplied with the cable kits for mating up the RemoteRigs and the K3 and K3/0 and do not see a cable supplied for this application. Do you know if this is left up to the purchaser to construct/provide his own DC power cable? Even more reason for something to be put in the manual if that is the case. Strange. Thanks. Milt, I related my understanding from earlier discussions on the Field Test group. I do recall commenting my concerns to that group about the exposed 12 volts on the RCA plug. [Elecraft] K3 Microphone Choices
Good evening. I have a K3 and really love it. I am looking at purchasing a new microphone pretty soon. I am currently using a Kenwood MC-60 and I get excellent reports on my modulation. But I have been reading alot about the Heil microphones and was wondering what Heil microphone would work good with my system. I basically like to operate for DX though I do chat from time to time on some nets. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!! Re: [Elecraft] K3 Microphone Choices
Hi Mark, I use the Heil HM-12, and find that it works extremely well w/ the K3. It's insensitive to room noise, and the K3's TX EQ, TX Gate, and compression adjustments will enable you to optimize it for DX or easy on the ears rag chews -- or anything in between. If you'd like, we can set up a sked sometime and you can hear what it sounds like for yourself. 73, Dale WA8SRA Good evening. I have a K3 and really love it. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Microphone Choices
Hi Mark, Hi all Good morning from Australia, re the request for recommendations for microphone / headset combo's. Like you I had been using a Kenwood MC60 microphone . I purchased a Koss SB40 headset with dynamic microphone; the mic was very sensitive to position, (seemed very directional and had objectional bass from proximity when correctly positioned), eventually the R/hand driver unit went O/C with a lead fault. I bit the bullet bought a Yamaha CM500, which, as standard has an electret microphone and external battery bias box for gear not electret compatible. Since receiving the CM500 and using it with the K3 (S/No:4520), I am completely satisfied with the CM500 Mic headset combination; after setting the Mic Gain range to low transmit equalisation with plenty of bass cut up to 200Hz and a little treble lift above 2Khz I have been receiving unsolicited reports of superb audio from the K3 with the CM500 headset. I have had the headset for about 2 months so far, it has definitely exceeded all my expectations: sturdy construction, not heavy, good ear pads (cover the ears well as I wear glasses have hearing aids) the headset sits well over both and is OK for hours of use with no discomfort. By the way I do not use the hearing aids in combination with the headset, but, at times, I have slipped the headset on to get in to call a DX station before being swamped by other callers -or- qsy etc, I have been suprised how comfortable the CM500 has been over both the glasses hearing aids. The added bonus is that the CM500 is about 1/4 of the Heil haedset and much better built (I have both) and the CM500 is way in front on both counts (Price construction). My 2 Cents Worth. 73 from Eric VK3AX. On 3/14/2013 11:28 AM, pastor...@verizon.net wrote: Good evening. I have a K3 and really love it. I am looking at purchasing a new microphone pretty soon. [Elecraft] K3 power output instability
I'm experiencing a problem with instability in power output from my K3/100. No word back from Elecraft yet (it's only been a few days), so I thought I'd try here. The problem is that at relatively low power output levels (approximately 10 to 40 watts), the power output does not remain constant. If I engage TUNE, the power will vary plus/minus 3 or 4 watts, then jump up briefly by as much as 10 watts or more before resuming smaller excursions. Although the power variations are brief, they cause the grid protection circuit in the amp to trip. This behavior seems to be independent of mode and frequency. The above problem persists with different feedlines and occurs with the amp out of line and transmitting into a dummy load as well. At higher levels of output, the power level is stable. The radio is of relatively recent manufacture (S/N 5839) and I have the latest downloads installed. I have another K3 that does not exhibit this problem. Any ideas? Re: [Elecraft] K3 Microphone Choices
but if he moves it to a non K3 rig he is back to having the lows... That's why one adds a 0.1 uF capacitor in series with the mic hot lead in the base. Take your time and try 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 uF to find one that fits your voice and the rig. It will roll off the excess bass and provide a rising characteristic through out the entire voice range. The MC-90 actually includes switch selected .22 uF and .047 uF capacitors with 1.2K shunt across the mic line to the rig. These techniques have been around for 40 years or more ... it used to be a .001 uF in series with the high impedance mics to the Collins, Drake and Heath rigs in the day. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] K3 Microphone Choices
On 3/13/2013 6:34 PM, Joe Subich, W4TV wrote: Use the TX EQ - don't waste your money on another mic. I strongly agree. It's very easy to make almost any decent mike sound good with a K3. Many K3 users, especially those who are competitive contesters and DXers, like the Yamaha CM500 boom headset. It's very comfortable, even after a long weekend contesting, and both the mic and the headphones sound VERY good. Not only that, it's very inexpensive -- about $45 delivered from vendors like BH Photo in NYC. You can buy three for the price of one Heil, and it sounds better than the Heils I've heard. The Heil mics are over-hyped and wildly overpriced. You're paying for Bob Heil's advertising budget, which is huge, not for his mics, which are cheaply built and not that comfortable. How competitive is the audio from a CM500 with a K3? Well, as a lark, I worked ARRL DX SSB QRP. (DX contests aren't competitive from California, because it's very tough to work EU, which is where the mults are.) Even running QRP, I worked a dozen EU stations in 9 countries, a total of 41 countries. Believe me, if you can work a SSB DX contest QRP, you've got really competitive audio! BTW -- I also worked TX5K on 80-10 (except 30, of course). This behavior seems to be independent of mode and frequency. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 power output instability
Running the low and high power TX gain calibration via the K3 Utility gave the following result: TX Gain calibration failed because power reading did not converge to a consistent value. 5W calibration failed. TX Gain calibration failed because power reading did not converge to a consistent value. 50 W calibration failed. The low power calibration failed on 40 meters and stopped there. The 50 W calibration failed on 160 meters and stopped there. The radio also gave an error message: ERR TXG (Transmit gain constant out of range). 73, Arliss Arliss, I would suggest that you run the Transmit Gain Calibration and see if that improves the situation. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/13/2013 9:10 PM, Arliss wrote: I'm experiencing a problem with instability in power output from my K3/100. Re: [Elecraft] K3 power output instability
Hi Arliss, I recently had a similar problem with my K3. I contact Elecraft and received this response from Gary: - See if it will produce 12w on 160-10m, and at least 8w on 6m, in Tune, with the KPA3 menu set to Bypass. The VFO should be near the middle of the band. Check the 3 LPA mounting screws on the bottom panel are all tight too. Be sure it passes VCO MD CAL too, and the ADC REF menu is set as shown below: - In my case, running VCO MD CAL cured it. I also asked Gary why this value may have been corrupted - here is his response: It does change sometimes with age or changes in temp, humidity, or altitude. Not a bad idea to redo VCO MD CAL from time to time. Re: [Elecraft] K3 power output instability
Something similar happened with my KX3. Support told me to reset and reload all the firmware, and it worked fine after that. I recommend that you get advice from Elecraft. Their advice worked for me. wunder K6WRU On Mar 13, 2013, at 8:12 PM, Arliss wrote: Running the low and high power TX gain calibration via the K3 Utility gave the following result: TX Gain calibration failed because power reading did not converge to a consistent value. 5W calibration failed. [Elecraft] KSB2 and KAF2
Dear Folks: I thought I'd mention that I successfully installed my KSB2 in my K2 a week ago Sunday, and it works great. I've been getting excellent audio reports from people and have even managed to work some DX on QRP SSB. What fun to have SSB installed in the K2, even though I'm primarily a CW operator. I inventoried the parts on the KAF2 tonight (I've already built and installed the KNB2 and the KAT2) and was absolutely shocked, I mean just shocked, to find that there are no toroids to wind in it. ;-) (Actually, I've never understood the fuss about them. I think the hardest part of them is making sure that you properly solder them during installation, since residue on the leads sometimes makes it difficult to get the solder to flow, so making sure they are properly tinned is the main chore, and that's not that bad). I don't want to jinx myself, but after the closely packed parts in the KSB2 and the KAT2, I feel like I'm building the KAF2 on a board the size of a football field. Sadly, I'm not sure what I'll do after I finish with the KAF2, as building the K2, the first three options to it, and building the K1 (along with its ATU), have been one of the deepest pleasures I've had in ham radio (and I've had many). I've already started roaming around other QRP sites for stuff to build after I finish with the KAF2 (I've also built a couple of the mini-module kits). It looks like I'm going to end up with a number of little QRP rigs sitting around. Thanks to Elecraft for a great experience in building both the K2 and the K1. 73 de Bernie, KF0QS -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KSB2-and-KAF2-tp7571272.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - noise blanker works fine
OK, here is another testament to the NB in the K3. I have been plagued by an intermittent local noise source on 2m which is so strong that it renders contacts 15 miles away nearly impossible to copy (on SSB). I made a digital copy of the audio and sent it to a receiver engineer in Sweden (who created Linrad) for analysis. He told me that it looks like a raw electrical arc and his sw FFT NB was unable to counter the noise. I am running a NB digital mode (MAP65) on 2m-eme and its NB did lower the noise amplitude but with no appreciable improvement in SNR so only super-strong signals are decoded. page two: Having nothing to lose, I decide to try the NB in the K3. I played with the setting and finally with it set to IF-MED-7 I achieved a reduction of about 4 s-units (20 dB) in the noise level resulting in recovering about 70% of my normal eme sensitivity. I am impressed! 73, Ed - KL7UW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
