[Elecraft] SSB Net for Sunday September 26. 2021

2021-10-01 Thread Eric Lanzl
Here is the list of stations checking in to the Sunday net for 9-26-2021. Thank
you to the relay stations who always help pick up additional stations not heard
by net control.

SSB Nets on Sundays: We welcome everyone regardless of the type of radio they
are using. Hope to see you on one or more nets.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 kit tips?

2021-10-01 Thread Julia Tuttle
Hi folks,

My PX3 is up and running! The manual was a delight to follow, and
everything went together swimmingly. Thanks for all the tips -- I had
everything small neatly laid out in an egg carton, and assembling this was
probably the most peaceful hour of my day.

Here is a lousy phone picture of the finished product:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/NsXTLNo2zZPcuM4p9

One question: I performed the sideband nulling procedure, and found that my
ideal phase values were similar to the factory ones, but that my ideal
amplitude values were consistently about 25 lower than the factory ones. Is
this indicative of an issue with my equipment, build, or calibration? Or is
it within the expected range of calibration values?

Thanks and 73,

Julie

[Elecraft] KPA-1500 problem

2021-10-01 Thread RVZ via Elecraft
Hi Guys,
My KPA-1500 is having an issue: with the internal ATU tuned "OFF" or in
"ByPass" mode, when transmitting the KPA-1500's relays occassionally chatter
like a machine gun while transmitting.  It sounds just like the relays do when
the ATU is turned "ON" and it's tuning an antenna for minimum SWR.  Are there
any KPA-1500 configuration settings that could cause this to occur even though
the ATU is turned "OFF"?  Any ideas why this is happening? Thanks!  Dick- K9OM

2021-10-01 Thread Jim Brown

On 9/22/2021 6:40 PM, Phil Kane wrote:
I second what Jim Brown posted earlier.  It's a problem of front-end
overload and/or audio rectification within the affected devices, not of
the transmitter.

Yes, it's audio rectification, but I'll go to the mat about "front end
overload" NOT being a primary cause of RFI (and I went to the mat with
ARRL ten years ago and lost). Rather it's "the Pin One Problem," first
noticed in the world of pro audio by a ham, the late Neil Muncy,
ex-W3WJE. That's the failure to terminate cable shields to the shielding
enclosure at the point of entry. EVERY rig I examined the last time I
was at Dayton had Pin One Problems at their accessory connections.
Nearly all computers, computer accessories, and consumer equipment has
this manufacturing defect.

This is why proper bonding in our stations and ferrite chokes on wiring
connected to victim equipment solve RFI problems.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 - does it earth antenna connections

2021-10-01 Thread Andy Durbin
"You don't need to manually choose an antenna on startup. It remembers what
was last used on each band (assuming you are using an Elecraft or Kenwood
rig with it). I think it will still remember the last used even in a dumb
situation without knowledge from the radio; it just needs the radio support
to have "per-band" memory."

No radio support is needed for antenna per-band memory. All the KAT500 needs
to know is the TX frequency. It then decides which antenna to select based on
"band" and the antenna preferences defined by the KAT500 PC Utility.

A weakness of this design is that, if only RF sensing is used for frequency
determination, the KAT500 may fault due to a mismatched load before the
appropriate antenna has been selected for the new band.

Antenna selection can be performed by serial command but, even though my
controller is capable of that, I have seen no reason to replicate the antenna
selection logic already built into the KAT500. There is a caveat though -
the internal antenna selection logic doesn't work correctly when KAT500 is in
BYP mode. (The workaround for that defect is to never use BYP mode. MAN mode
with Byp active is electrically the same and antenna selection does work
correctly in that configuration).

[Elecraft] KAT500 - does it earth antenna connections

2021-10-01 Thread Bob McGraw
I would suggest a dummy load be connected to antenna port #1 and your
antennas to #2 and #3.   As to grounding, I suggest one review the ARRL
book "Grounding and Bonding for the amateur station".

I've seen many ham stations that ground ground ground and still have
issues, in some cases they attribute to a dangerous condition,
regarding lightning protection and RF grounding. There is a LOT of
incorrect and incomplete information passed around with regard to
grounding.  It is mostly originated as  "old ham lore" with no
scientific basis found or applied.

And yes, the KAT500 has 3 antenna ports and port #1 is the default
selected when power is not applied.

Interesting idea.
I have two antennas, so I could connect my ground to #1 and antennas to #2
and #3?
Just manually choose an antenna on start-up. Hm-m-m-m-m.

Do a complete inventory of all parts before you begin. It isn’t unusual for a
small piece or two to go astray.

Simply call Elecraft and they’ll send it to you. Though it may be a little
slower than in the past with the challenges of late.

Most important- have fun!
