[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2023-05-14 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

Conditions were not good on either band.  QSB was moderate, signals
were weak, and the noise levels were high.  Between that, and the
holiday, I got about as many emails as I did check ins :) While it is
growing drier here in the Northwest Roy said his vertical was performing
better over a deluge soaked ground.  I may have to water my antenna
before it dies of thirst.

  On 14050.5 kHz at 2200z:

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

W0CZ - Ken - ND

K4JPN - Steve - GA

K6XK - Roy - IA

  On 7047.5 kHz at z:

W7JRD - Jim - ID

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

KG7V - Marv - WA

   Until next week 73,

  Kevin.  KD5ONS

Here is a link to a video of a very good description of how to use one
of Feynman's integration techniques.  I wish my calculus professors had
been so clear and enthusiastic.  This guy makes it fun to keep all the
parts in your head as he speaks.  I plan to watch a few more of these to
exercise dormant memories.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Fan Question

2023-05-14 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
Hi Jim!
Hope you are enjoying Idaho. I hear it is a great place to be!

The fan in the KPA500 goes to level 3 at 60 degrees. It goes to full-on at 80
degrees.
The levels are:
level 1 - 50C degrees
level 2 - 55C degrees
level 3 - 60C degrees
level 4 - 65C degrees
level 5 - 70C degrees
level 6 - 80C degrees
The amplifier will fault at a temperature is 90C.

What mode are you operating? And, for those using TS-890s, why would the KPA
behave any differently than it does with a K3? Has anyone checked for spurs or
harmonics coming out of the transmitter? (NOT suggesting there are any, mind
you). I’m looking for reasons the KPA would heat up any faster than with a K3.
Are you seeing anything else, like strange band changes?

But, rest assured that the KPA will run just fine at 60 or 65 degrees. The fan
sound is just telling you the KPA is doing its normal great job at protecting
itself.

73,
Jack, W6FB
p.s. I didn’t want the snow, so I went the other way, going home to Louisiana…

[Elecraft] N6TV Product Announcement - new "K-ON" plugin for K3, K3S, and K4

2023-05-14 Thread Bob Wilson, N6TV
Thanks to circuit design help from K9JB, and after review by Elecraft Chief
Engineer, N6KR, I'm now able to provide a new plugin module for
the Elecraft K3 and K4 that I call the "K-ON".

When connected to the rig's ACC jack directly, or via a 15-pin Y-cable or
Y-BOX , the rig will automatically power up whenever
the rig's DC power supply powers up. This could be useful to remote
stations with Internet-accessible AC power strips. I also find it useful
at my home station where I use a "Master Power On" switch that powers
everything up automatically, including two K4Ds.

If you already have a Y-BOX with an unused connector, the K-ON plugs right
in. I'm also including the same circuit inside the new Y-BOX v4.0 (so the
plugin is not needed). The "Auto On" feature of Y-BOX v4.0 can be enabled
or disabled by a shortened RCA plug, as shown in the third demo video on
the website.

For photos, demo videos, and ordering one or more K-ON plugins, please
visit the new website.

https://bit.ly/N6TV-KON

Unlike some solutions that have previously been suggested, such as
connecting a big capacitor to ACC Pin 8, connecting the K-ON plugin has no
surprise side effects. The rig's POWER switch and PS0; commands continue
to function normally, so the rig shuts down properly while the module
remains connected, as shown in the videos. You can still connect a
RemoteRig box in parallel with no issues either; it will still function
normally.

73,
Bob, N6TV

[Elecraft] P3 FS

2023-05-14 Thread Marty via Elecraft
I have a pristine and working 100% P3 that I can take to Dayton/Xenia. No VGA
or K3 cables (I used it with a non-Elecraft rig.) I did put 1/2 down on a VGA
upgrade for it back when they announced the last chance K3series build years
ago. I’ll sell the P3 and transfer the 1/2 upgrade to you for $425, firm, cash
and carry in Xenia. Please respond to my QRZ.com email address, as I don’t get
all the posts on this list (I filter for the K2) Thanks

PS: If there’s time, I can send pics on request.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Fan Question

2023-05-14 Thread Peter Lascell
My K3 into the KPA500 for over ten years . . . . The FAN REV is 1.54
(this might be software)The resting temp is 27C. When on RTTY I set
the FAN to 4. Otherwise 2 for most of the time. Knowing temperature is
the killer of electronics (short of lightning) I try to keep things cool.
For 10 years I have had a 24 V muffin fan running at 12 V sitting on top of
the amp (and another one on the K3).

To rule out VSWR issues, how about connecting the KPA500 directly into a
dummy load.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Fan Question

2023-05-14 Thread AL7CR
My setup is like yours and the response is exactly the same. Starting use on
fan speed 4 delays the temp rise for a short time. Mine has run many many
hours at temps up to 70 with no problems. Hottest on 20m and requires the
most drive on that band also.

[Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Announcement

2023-05-14 Thread Dave New, N8SBE
Please join us on 3784 kHz (NOTE THE NEW FREQUENCY), 9PM ET Sunday
(0100Z Monday). Note that the net stays on the same local time, when we
switch back and forth to/from Daylight time, so the UTC time changes,
but not the local time.

Now that we have moved into Daylight time and have longer daylight
hours, 80M may not be as strong as during the winter.

Your net control this week will be Eric, WB9JNZ, since I'm camping this
weekend, so my antenna (Eagle One) and power (100W) won't lend itself to
being net control this evening.

Thanks to Eric for agreeing to run the net this evening.

Hope to see you this evening on the net.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Fan Question

2023-05-14 Thread Mike Maloney
Your resting temperature at 42C seems TOO warm to me?   My KPA resting temp
runs about the same as ambient temperature of shack, 25-30C.   With 25-30W
drive from TS-890,my KPA seldom reaches 3rd stage 60 degrees.   Have you
checked SWR or cable between 890 and KPA?

[Elecraft] KPA500 Fan Question

2023-05-14 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Got a question (problem?) regarding the fan in my KPA500. I'm driving the amp
at 29 watts from a Kenwood TS-890S. The amp is connected to a KAT500, which in
turn is hooked to a 30 foot tall Zerofive flagpole vertical. The tuner has
provided me with a nice 1.2:1 SWR, as displayed on the amp. The resting temp of
the amp shows 42C. At 29 watts input to the amp, I’m seeing about 480 watts of
power from the amp. The amp has nothing sitting on top of it, and the wall
behind it is over 12” away. There is about 2” clearance on either side of the
amp, and it is sitting on top of the KAT500.

The issue: The fan comes on in a very short time - less than 20 seconds - and
the temp display runs up to 50+ degrees. If I start calling CQ or get into a
QSO, it doesn’t take long for the temp to show over 60 degrees and the fan is
running at max.

When I had a K3 and more recently, a K4D - this did NOT happen. The fan would
come on but NEVER at the max, loud level. Interestingly, many moons ago I also
had a KX3 and had it connected to the KPA500. I noticed that the fan would also
come on fairly quickly with that rig driving the amp, but I never thought too
much about it. Until now...

But now, I think there is some sort of problem. It seems to me that the temp
shouldn’t get that high that fast nor should the fan start roaring in that
short amount of time. I could understand it if the SWR was really bad, but at
1.2:1

Any ideas why the amp fan should be acting this way with a non-K3 or non-K4
driving it?
