Re: [Elecraft] KXPD2 paddle not working

2022-03-08 Thread Gary Slagel via Elecraft
Thanks Chris and Mike,
I initially tried a continuity check and had little luck confirming bad or good
continuity.   I spent some time this morning putting it in, taking it out,
adjusting spacing, etc.  Everything was pretty inconsistent.  For a while I had
the left side of the paddle working and the right not working, for a while
everything was fine and now, believe it or not the left paddle is working and
the right paddle is working as long as I don't completely tighten the left
thumbscrew that holds it on to the kx2 hihi!  I'd guess it needs a cleaning.
I've misplaced the smaller allen wrench for the pivot screws so may try to
round one up and see if I can get it apart and cleaned and back together.
Or... maybe leave that left thumbscrew a little loose :)!
Thanks for both of your comeback!

 Hi Gary,
You can disconnect the paddle and do a continuity check with your multimeter.
It seems that the problem is on the paddle.  You can easily disassemble it to
see where the problem is.  I did clean mine, and it is fairly easy.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 temperature

2021-08-22 Thread Gary Slagel via Elecraft
I have trouble with the KX2 keyer malfunctioning when I'm operating with the
radio sitting outside in direct sunlight.  It happens after 20 or 30 minutes of
steady contest style QSO's on SOTA activations.  I haven't spent any time
troubleshooting other then trying to keep it shaded with whatever is handy to
droop over it.
I wonder if the Pro Audio Engineering Kx22 Heatsink kit would help with that
issue?

The Kx22 provides 200% or more key-down time in transmit and there is

of the rig at all.  By this I mean we engineered them to only have fins

the PA FETs are attached.  Any case the KX2 fit in before it will still

We have several distributors around the world which sell them including

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 ATU band/bin operation

2020-11-16 Thread Gary Slagel via Elecraft
Thanks for the good explanation Dick.  It got by me that the bins are storing
the ant port# along with the tuner settings.  That should work well having 2
antennas on every band if needed.  Adding a 3rd might be cumbersome but more
then I need for now anyway... I'll think about that later.
Thanks for all 3 of your comments good food for thought.

If the Xcvr provides freq info (a K3 menu enable is required), the KPA1500
selects new ATU settings as the K3 Tx VFO changes (a bit after VFO motion

recently stored ATU setting in the new “bin”.  On transmission, if SWR exceeds
a threshold, and a KPA1500 config choice for HiSWR retune is enabled, other ATU
settings in the bin are evaluated. This requires a bit of RF. Once the best ATU
setting is found, the bin is reordered and stored, so when you return to this
frequency, the most recent setting is tried first.

If you mostly use your three antennas on the obvious bands, there should be one
or two ATU settings per bin.  If you train your 80 meter dipole on 20 and your
40 meter beam on 15, there may be more ATU settings per bin.  I’d consider
putting the HyTower on the second ant port so that it can be used on all bands
without having to search thru settings for the “other” antenna.

If there are any ATU settings in the bin, only those settings will be tried, so
tune in every bin if you have multiple antennas.

It takes on the the order of 20 milliseconds of stable RF per ATU setting,
which has to do with relay settle delay and reevaluating SWR.  A CW dit at 30
WPM is 40 mSec. ATU relays are changed after bypassing the PA momentarily, and
that also takes a few mSec.

[Elecraft] KPA1500 ATU band/bin operation

2020-11-15 Thread Gary Slagel via Elecraft
I'm thinking of replacing an old SPE amp with a KPA1500.
I have 4 antennas: 10/15/20 yagi, 40M yagi, 80/160 dipole and an all band
hytower vertical so will probably have 3 switched antennas to one antenna port
on the KPA1500 and 1 antenna to the 2nd antenna port.
After 'training' on all freq/antenna combinations I'll tend to have 2 or 3
settings for each freq/bin.   When I tune from one frequency to the next and
one bin to the next bin, the tuner will have to select one of the 2 or 3
settings for the bin.  Does it wait until I transmit (a dit with the key) to
select the new setting or will it track with the k3 and make changes as I move
from freq to freq.   Will I notice the tuner trying each setting (lights
flashing, relay noise) until it finds the correct setting?
My older SPE has a similar freq/bin concept but has 4 antenna ports and 1 set
of band/bins per antenna port.   This allows it to know exactly setting to use
which is nice.   But... maybe not as durable as the KPA1500.
Thanks for any advice.

Re: [Elecraft] [P3 panadapter]: rs232 output working with logging software

2018-03-05 Thread Gary Slagel via Elecraft
Thanks for your help Graziano,
I'm using a cable made by Dan Tassel/SPE and I think it is the same wiring as
your diagram shows.
I did finally get it working  this morning.   After comparing your diagram with
my wiring I was looking at software port configuration more closely and I
noticed that N1MM+ recommended having stop bit set to 1.. I had it set to
2.   I changed it and everything started working.  Also started working when I
changed it in the dxlab commander software.
My takeaway is that at the faster baud rates stop bit setting is not so fussy.
At the slower baud rates it IS fussy.
Thanks again,

Re: [Elecraft] [P3 panadapter]: rs232 output working with logging software

2018-03-04 Thread Gary Slagel via Elecraft
That's a good suggestion and it worked!  I tried it at 38400 and 19200 and they
both worked.   When I went down to 9600 and 4800 it quite working.
Unfortunately, I've got an SPE amp that has to be in the same chain of
equipment and that fastest it will talk is 9600.
Funny though, that the k3s will talk to the computer software and the amp at
4800 baud if the panadapter isn't in the chain.
The panadapter will only talk to the k3s at 38400 and enforces the 38400 baud
rate by automatically setting the k3s to 38400.  But even when it is talking to
the k3s at 38400 it lets me set its output baud rate to whatever I want.
So the strange thing is that if I set the panadapter output to 38400 or
19200 it works fb with the computer logging software ( but not the amp cuz it
won't go that high) but if I set the panadapter output to 9600 or 4800 it won't
talk to the computer logging software but it will talk to the elecraft k3
utility at the slower baud rate.  If I take the panadapter out of the chain the
k3 and amp and computer software will all happily talk to each other at 4800
baud.
Now I'm wondering if there is such a thing as a baud rate converter that I
could put inline with the amp to turn the 19200 baud rate into 4800 so it'll
talk to the amp?  I'm off to scour the internet.

[Elecraft] [K3] low audio volume and low s meter readings

2018-02-25 Thread Gary Slagel via Elecraft
I took my k3 to Belize for ARRL DX CW and pre contest worked a few contacts all
of which told me I had a great signal while I could barely hear them.  A couple
I knew were KW stations and I was concerned I wasn't hearing well.  Performance
during the contest seemed to  confirm that I was being heard better then I was
hearing.  I had the af gain at max for most of the time.
At home I've set up my k3 next to my k3s for comparison testing.  The k3
definitely has lower volume and the S meter is reading low.
The K3S has an ambient noise level of about s6 on 20M while the K3 S meter
shows an ambient noise level of 0.The K3S has a comfortable af gain level of
about noon while K3 is comfortable with af gain fully clockwise (both with rf
gain at max)Signals seem to be stronger on the K3S.
I've been through the 'Receive:Receive signal level too low' section of the
troubleshooting guide in the manual and all seems good (didn't try to change
config:REF CAL but its value was very close to the default).
Would appreciate any wisdom before I resort to sending it in for a tune up.
Thanks,

Gary,

You did not specify the cable connections that you are using.  You
should have the KXPACBL for best integration with the KX3.  See pages 14
and 15 of the KXPA100 manual.

If you do have those cables and have them connected correctly, then I
would say that you have a problem with the KXPA100 and that you should
contact Elecraft support.

[Elecraft] K3 macro/cw message key behavior

2015-01-04 Thread Gary Slagel via Elecraft
I've set up the K3 macro keys to set my output power to different levels based
on if I'm using my amp or not.  I use 6 different macros on keys 1, 2 and 3
using both the tap and hold memory.
Recently I recorded a cw message on key 1 which overwrote the macro.  The
manual says I can erase the cw message by hitting the 'rec' key, then recording
the morse sequence '--..' and hitting 'rec' again.  I've tried that but looking
that cw memory from the K3 utility program it still shows a '|' in that memory
and it won't let me rewrite my macro into that key memory.  I write the macros
into the keys using the K3 utility program.
Any suggestions on how to get my macro back into that key 1 memory?  Thanks for
any help! Gary / KT0A

[Elecraft] MH2 mike with a kx3?

2012-10-22 Thread Gary Slagel

Hi guys,

I sold my k3 to finance the purchase of a kx3 but I saved the mh2 mike from th3
k2 thinking I'd use it with the kx3 should have done my research first!  Is
there a simple adapter to go from the 8 pin plug of the mh2 to mike to the kx3?

Thanks,

Gary Slagel

[Elecraft] mh2 microphone and kx3

2012-10-22 Thread Gary Slagel
Hi guys,

I just traded in my K2 on a shiny new KX3 and saved my old mh2 mike.  What is
the easiest way to convert my mh2 with the 8 pin connector to use with the
kx3?  Hopefully a simple adapter?

Thanks,

Gary Slagel

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Expert Amp

2012-09-24 Thread Gary Slagel
Thanks for your responses to my earlier question.  It sounds like I don't want
to use ALC to control power output on the Expert Amp.  One more question for
the Expert amp users though.

I'd suppose, if I did use the ALC connection, when I hit the half power button
on the amp it would just cut back the power level on the K3 to generate a 500W
output from the amp.  So, If I'm not using the ALC connection does this make
the SPE full/half power button useless?

I know this might be a better discussion for the SPE yahoo group but I've been
trying for a couple days to get into that group and my membership is still
pending.  Thanks much for any input.

Subject: K3 and Expert Amp

I'm looking at the SPE Expert Amp 1K-FA.  The SPE amps both recommend using an
ALC connection to automatically control the radio's output power thus
preventing amplifier overdrive.

I talked to an SPE rep and I understood him to say that I couldn't use the ALC
connection with a K3 and there was an alternative way to allow the SPE to
control the K3 output power by manually configuring the SPE to set the K3
output power on a band by band basis.  I looked at the SPE manual and it
outlines a method to set up a flex-radio that does not have the ALC connection
but doesn't talk about the K3.  I assume the k3 setup would be the same as for
the flex-radio.

Does anyone have experience with setting this up with the K3 and SPE 1K-FA.
Or, experience using the K3 ext ALC with and SPE?

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] Using the KX3 to control a remote KX3, K3, or K2 (limited and experimental)

2012-09-09 Thread Gary Slagel
Thanks Wayne and everyone else who sent direct responses. I am thinking that
I'd use the remote rig boxes if I tried remoting so audio and cw keying
should work as well as the k3/k3 remote. One of my goals is to do some
remote contesting so the reduced control set and slower rig control may not
fly for that. But it'll be worth experimenting with and if needed I
should be able to use the same remote rig boxes with a k3 terminal. I've
got a month or so for delivery of the kx3 so plenty of time for planning.
Thanks again.

[Elecraft] KX3 - use as a k3 remote rig

2012-09-07 Thread Gary Slagel
I'm about to buy a vacation home that I plan to spend a week a month or so in.
I've also got a kx3 on order.  Because of the vacation home I'm really
interested in the new K3 to K3 remote rig option and I'm wondering if it would
be nearly as easy to set up a kx3 to k3 remote option as it seems the kx3
architecture is pretty similar to the k3.

Anyone have any experience or thoughts on how this would go?

Thanks,

Gary Slagel

[Elecraft] Listening on k3 subreceiver while transmitting

2012-06-04 Thread Gary Slagel
Hi All,

I'm looking at getting the subreceiver for my k3.  I'm trying to figure out if
I can listen on the subreceiver while transmitting. For instance, while
contesting, this would let me look for multipliers on the subreceiver while
running with the main receiver.  Is this possible?

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 #2374 On the air.

2010-04-25 Thread Gary Slagel
Phil... congrats on the KX1.  I hadn't used kx1 for a long time but last nite
was on the deck with a beer after work and got an itch to dig it out.  Grabbed
my little kx1 bag which includes a wire, paddle plus pen and paper.  15 minutes
after the thought crossed my mind I had a wire thrown in a tree (no
counterpoise) and was on the air from my deck chair!  First sig I heard on 30M
was a CQ that I answered and had a 25 minute qso from Oregon to South Dakota.
On completion I got a quick call from an 18 wheeler in Ontario for a short
qso.

The kx1 is an amazing little machine and you'll really enjoy it!

After thinking about if for almost a year, and recently playing with one
again at the Visalia IDXC, I bought a KX1, with the tuner and 30/80 option.

I received the box Friday morning and made the first QSO tonight. Took me
about 15 hours of work to build the basic KX1 (#2374), I still need to
assemble the tuner 30/80 but the basic radio worked perfected after I
completed it.

I was very impressed with the loud audio on both 20 40... I didn't even
have a good antenna attached when I did the initial recv tune up, I just
used a piece of scrap wire and I was copying stations 500+ miles away. I was
thrilled.

After completing the transmitter, I wired up a hand key and started banging
out a CQ with only about 25% power... (1W) and on the third call I had a
response from a local. Anyway, don't know enough about the rig to comment on
much else yet, but so far I'm extremely happy and now not sure why I waited
so long.

Thanks for the responses.

I didn't realize these things were so common place and cheap and worked so
well.  I've got a powered hub coming from Amazon as well as a usb keyboard
because I discovered my laptop had no provision for a regular external keyboard!

Hi guys,

I've got my new k3 hooked to the laptop using the KUSB and it worked FB first
time but, I'm going to be out of usb ports.  I've got 2 ports.  I'd like to use
the KUSB to the k3, a USB Winkey keyer and also a USB mouse and who knows
what down the road.

Has anyone used some kind of a usb hub to hook multiple devices to the laptop
simultaneously?

Thanks for any help.

Re: [Elecraft] Older Serial# K3 - Thanks for comments.

2010-04-04 Thread Gary Slagel
Thanks for a lot of good comments.  A new K3 is on the way... who wants to wait
for the right used rig to show up anyway!

It looks to me like the early rigs are essentially the same rig as the new
ones... the small hardware mods that have been made don't look like they'd be a
concern to me even if they weren't applied.  But... the things hold their value
so well that I'd spend a long time waiting for the rig with the right options
installed and then not save a lot anyway.

I did get a couple good tips for options I hadn't thought of.  1) get the extra
prebuilt power cord... I have a bad time getting things like that crimped and
built correctly.  2) if you want the digital recorder do it right away, its one
of the first things in the building process and a little more of a hassle to do
later I was on the edge on that one so that was enuff to put me over the
edge.

I also got 'mouse happy' and added an extra filter at the last minute just cuz
it was so easy to hit that extra checkbox on the order form.  Had been
intending to save some money by going with only one extra filter but added a
250hz at the last minute.

Anyway, thanks again for all the comments.  I should be building soon!

[Elecraft] Older Serial# K3

2010-04-03 Thread Gary Slagel
I want to get a K3 and wonder if I'm as well off buying an older K3 as getting
the latest and greatest straight from elecraft.

If I get an older serial# and make sure all firmware updates are in place is it
essentially the same radio as the newer version?

Thanks,

[Elecraft] K2 troubleshooting help and/or troubled k2 for sale

2010-03-21 Thread Gary Slagel
Hi guys,

I've got a k2/100 giving me fits!  After about 30 minutes of qso time, output
shuts down completely on 20 and 30 meters.  After a period of time (15 minutes
to a couple hours) it will come back on and then run happily for as long as I
want.  For instance, november sweepstakes it shut down, 30 minutes later came
back up and I used it for the next 20 hours with no problems.  Bands other then
20 and 30 are fine.  I've done extensive testing.  It happens whether I'm
running at 5 watts or 100 watts.  It happens whether connected to my antenna (3
ele tribander) or into a dummy load.  It sometimes doesn't happen, but 3 out of
4 times it does under identical test condx.   I've only tested on CW and the
test platform was to record a 90 second message and have it repeat over and
over with a 90 second interval between repetitions.  The only troubleshooting
suggestion I could find in the manual suggested an insufficient power supply
but I figured since I
have the same problem runningn 5watts out that this shouldn't be the problem.

My next step will be to ask elecraft to take a look at it but I thought I'd
throw the problem out here first and see if anybody has seen a similar problem.

If anyone would like to take a wack at fixing the thing and get a really good
deal on a K2 I'd be interested in selling it also.  I bought the rig already
assembled in 2006 for $1400.  Not sure what a k2 with a problem is worth but
I'd sell it for $750 and might consider offers as well.  The thing is fully
decked out with the following options:

K2
KPA100 (100 W module)
KSB2 (SSB  Module)
K160RX (160M option)
K60XV (60M and transverter interface)
KNB2 (Noise Blanker)
FDIMP (Finger Dimple)
KDSP2 (Internal DSP and Clock option)
KAT100-1 (external 100W tuner)
MD2 (Desk Mic w/stand, very nice matching Elecraft Desk Mic)
Foot switch (plugs into mic cable)
Rework Eliminators ( set of 6 plug in boards)

If you're interested I can send pictures and try to give you some more details
over the phone.

Thanks,
Gary
