[Elecraft] k2 kpa100 fault

2015-02-05 Thread John Cooper
The power input on the kpa100 has a short of around 17ohms from the black to
red anderson powerpoles. I havent used it in a couple of months but the last
time I used it all was fine. I check for solder bridges and for loose items
that could have fallen and shorted something, found nothing. The inner power
connector that plugs into the k2 is not shorted. The basic k2 powers up just
fine but pluggin in the kpa100 immediately kills the power supply. I pulled
the following parts because I followed every which way the positive wire comes
in and these had a connection to ground. (12PA)

D9
D10
C85
C48
C49
C51-57
R38-39
Q1-2 FINALS
C30
C34
R32
Q4
R14
R13
R40
R8

these parts checked good and none raised the resistance reading on my power
input.

then I pulled U7
back to normal. somehow it shorted from pins 2,8 to pin 4 which is ground.

this started off as a I need help email. thought I would post anyway.

Ground them to the sides on both sides.  They stopped doing the tops years ago.
Think it was filter blow by.  I ground all crystals to sides now.

Lane,

I believe you want to ground them as shown in the manual.  I built my K2
using the method of grounding on both sides.  It has been a little while
since I built mine but I seem to recall reading somewhere that this is
an improvement over grounding to the top. Also if you add options such
as the KPA100, grounding to the side helps eliminate clearance issues
with other circuit boards.

I'm at the point of grounding the X7-X11 crystals on page 54 of the K2

single side ground to top of crystal. Manual seems to state grounding on
both sides and slight up from board.

Without anyone going way out of their way to do this, would anyone happen
to have a photo of the proper grounding for these crystals?

[Elecraft] variac question

2015-01-24 Thread John Cooper
I have a 2000VA chinese variac off ebay looks similar to a staco(. No
schematic. It works fine when used normally. Varies my voltage from 0-148V.
But when its switched off and left plugged in I have 0 V between and neutral
and 120V between hot and ground and neutral and ground. Is this normal for a
variac?

I was hooking up a electromagnet @5V with the variac off but plugged in and I
got a 120V bite even when the dial is all the way to 0. That’s why I started
checking it. Ive been running my coil off it with no problems.

[Elecraft] Spark gap hisory

2014-11-21 Thread John Cooper
Sorry for off topic.  Been researching some radio history.  Did old time ship
spark gap transmitters have high voltage on the key itself?  From what I can
tell it looks like they used a battery to the key and then made high voltage in
spark coil or induction coil?  I'm assuming this would  of have been a step up
transformer?  If anyone knows about this stuff I had some questions.

I finished a prototype of the little Bluetooth serial data interface for
my K2.
Just plugs in the back of the K2 on the KIO2's DB9 connector, drawing its
power from there.

The prototype seems to work fine. Have been running for about a week.
I'm presently using it with N3FJP's ACLog, and have tried it out with an
older version of Ham Radio Deluxe.

[Elecraft] k2 balun question

2014-07-19 Thread John Cooper
k2/100 10m beam up 30ft with 50ft of rg58 coax. How many turns and what
diameter core to wind a balun on? Plan on winding it on pvc pipe. If I want to
use the kat100 to tune it from 20-10meters do I need to alter the balun? Ive
read 10 turns on 2inch pipe or 6 turns on a 4 inch pipe and Ive also read that
the turns don’t matter you have to use 21ft.

Bad news...for those who don't have one.

The K1-4 was my introduction to both Elecraft and purpose-built QRP
rigs. It's easily in the top 3 favorite radios I have owned in half a
century. I think Gil called it a cute mini K2 in the link below, and
that's a pretty good description. It's big enough to operate like a
real radio in the shack. It's small enough to take anywhere. It tunes
smoothly and sounds exceptionally good. It has everything you need for
CW and nothing you don't.

The KX1 isn't a good substitute for the K1, in my opinion. It's a very
specialized rig with lots of compromises for those who need minimum size
and weight. After the initial fun of a new rig, my KX1 has been sitting
on a shelf with very little use. Whenever I grab it to go camping, I
pack the K1 as well just in case. Then I end up using the K1 the
entire trip. If I was a backpacker, the roles would probably be
reversed, though.

Anyway, re: K1-4. I got mine, and I'm KEEPING it. (hi)

Whose antivirus software does one use these days?

I'll keep this short since it's off-topic.

I have used Trend Micro Titanium anti-virus for years.  I like it
because it has a small footprint:  it doesn't hog computer resources and
doesn't keep getting in your face like Norton and some of the others.
I've never had it flag a good file as bad, but of course there is no way
of knowing if it is trading off security for convenience.

It's also cheap.

[Elecraft] New k2 ghostlight mod!

2014-05-26 Thread John Cooper
My k2 already had the five keycap leds for xit rit split, zerobeat, transmit,
audio filter and Recieve antenna.  Now I've gone and added some leds to the
inside of the front panel. Alpena lights I got from Autozone.  It lets you see
where the buttons are in the dark.  Its a totally useless mod but the effect is
neat.  I sourced power from underneath the rf board where you plug in the
battery or amp depending on what you have.  They come on when you turn on power
supply before you turn on radio.  The instructions say they draw .08 amps, I
have not confirmed this. I have 2 youtube videos one is a picture slideshow and
the other is a short video.  My youtube name is A390652.  The videos are titled
k2backlit in action and k2 backlight details.

I understand your frustration.  However, Elecraft has no control of the
package once it is delivered to UPS.  If you request ground shipment, and
UPS says it will take 7 days to get the package to you, they will take the
full seven days.  I've seen cases, on my own packages, where UPS will
actually hold the package at their distribution facility if it gets there
ahead of what they deem is the appropriate delivery schedule, rather than
just delivering the package.  Please don't blame Elecraft for this one, they
can't control it.

[Elecraft] K2dsp

2014-03-20 Thread John Cooper

Well I changed out firmware in k2dsp.  Still have to put it in bypass to hear
any audio.  In the manual pg40 dc voltage chart for U1-5 I get 5v instead of 0.
U1-14 I get 0v instead of 5v.  I dont have noise blanker or ssb options.  But
all otger conditions met.  Also D3 C is 5v not 0v called for but in schematic
D3 is going to U1-3 which is supposed to be 5v.  Not sure if that was a typo.
All other voltages were right.  Removing R19 allows dsp to work but with
ungodly popping noise the mute circuit is supposed to stop. I've replaced
firmware all diodes and transistors. Clock functions fine leds comes on goes
off auxbus sees firmware controls work when u have r 19 removed.  Reheated all
solder pads.  Could one of the electrolytic capacitors be causing this there
bout the only thing left to change.

[Elecraft] K2dsp

2014-03-13 Thread John Cooper

So I removed r19 it gives a noisey pop as expected.  Dsp works great all the
adjustments make a difference and the audio is there.  Now I just need to know
if there is anything that tells the firmware to stay muted or is it just the
firmware?  I can get u1 from elecraft for $29.   But that won't fix it if
there's something else.

[Elecraft] K2 dsp audio muted

2014-03-11 Thread John Cooper

Won a dsp built kit for k2.  It was bought knowin it was bad.  Double check
part values orientation.  Everything checks out in menus.  I can make
adjustments set clock but there's no sound unless u put dsp in bypass then I
can hear a signal again.  I did voltage checks in manual and found that on u1-5
i get 5v where it calls for 0.  U1-14 I get 0 where it calls for 5v.  According
to schematic this is the muting circuit. I'm thinkin that I need a new firmware
chip at u1?  The seller thought it was the dspx board.  But since I'm not
gettin the right voltage without dspx board installed I ruled it out.  Is there
a menu setting that would trigger the muting?

[Elecraft] kpa100 toroid changes

2014-02-12 Thread John Cooper
Over the years the type of toroids in the kpa100 have changed. Is this because
of availability or other reasons? I have a prewound set of toroids for the
kpa100 but its old enough to not have rfc1. Plus the the ones I have don’t
match descriptions from the latest manual Im working off of. I don’t have the

leave them in there versus butchering them out. Unless there going to cause

John,

The way I handle it is to use the channel-hopping function.

Adding an asterisk (*) at the start of a label designates a channel-hopping
memory (pg. 40).

I set up the 5 channels starting with memory 60 (subtle, eh?) and put the
asterisk in front of them.

Now, if you select any one of them, tuning with the main knob will loop
around all 5.

I decided after the fact to order the paddle and mic.
Since I was ordering a K3, I asked if they could be included with that
order,
rather than waiting for the KX3 to ship.

At that time, probably 60 or so days ago, I was told that the mic would
ship with the K3, but they were saving the paddles to ship with units
ready to go. That situation may have changed.

Why not give the nice ladies at Elecraft Sales a call or send an e-mail?

What is not clear is if the time-tag is AK time or CA time. I wonder
if anyone recalls the exact time that ordering was started. Just to
give me time to guess how far back in the pack I am. I am thinking I
made the order at 9pm AKST (10pm PST).

[Elecraft] K2 Heil mic/boom for sale

2012-03-26 Thread John Cooper
Sorry for the off topic,

I have the Heil ICM microphone and PL2T boom for sale, this was used with my
Elecraft K2. It does need a new shock cord as the one on it is worn out.
Other than that it worked great with the K2. I have sold my K2 because Im
waiting on the KX3 and this will not be needed anymore. Asking $130 shipped to
your QTH via Paypal. Will consider separating the PL2T boom and Heil Icm mike
seperately for $70 each if I get an offer for both and no one wants both
together. Email me for pics.

you can break or cut the plastic between each pin and desolder or heat

Subject: [Elecraft] KSB2 screw up

So I accidentally skipped the first page of instructions then found that I
had some parts left over at the end of construction and I was missing the
header P1 or whatever, so I grabbed the connector and soldered it inonly
to find that the previous owner of my K2 had already put the female
connector on the main board of the K2, and I had just accidentally installed
the female connector on the KSB2 board. Great.

Long story short, I ripped out the female connector on the main board as it
was much easier to access but it was a huge to get the male header into
the holes. It isn't quite seated all the way but it is stable and straight
and seems to work OK with the module installed.

Question is: how would one actually go about removing one of these headers
correctly (I guess I already know the answer: desoldering station)

Already have 1 5w SSB qso down with one of the RT 66 stations and sent 1
wspr tx this morning and was spotted several places on the East coast. It
works! :D

John, that's more evidence that it's the forward and reverse power detection
diodes in the KPA100 that failed since when you remove it the power
detection function is handled by a separate diode detector in the base K2.

The base K2 doesn't have a full forward/reverse power detection circuit to
calculate SWR. It uses a simpler diode detector to only measure the output
power at the antenna connector and reports the power assuming a 50 ohm
non-reactive load. The detector output tells the K2 when it is producing the
power requested by the POWER control.

Subject: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

Good Evening,
I just checked my weather forecast and was shocked! On Tuesday the
thermometer will peak at 70 degrees! Such heat is just not normal.
Another spate of summer-like heat for a short period then back to more
normal 50 degree temperatures. I shall need to stock up on ice and
sunblock for this spell of sweltering heat. Lately it has been in the
high 50s and wet. Today the fire in my wood stove is perking along after
I spent the morning splitting more kindling. I hiked the property
yesterday and planned my next season's wood cutting schedule. I have
about five acres of downed timber to clear with a number of deadfalls to
negotiate. After I clear the working area I can plan how to drop those
hanging trees. Without a place to run I am in the path of a few large fir
trees. I doubt whether they would attempt to dodge me during their fall
to earth.

Propagation was good this week. Good enough for a few skeds on twenty
meters. Some QSB and some QRM from stations who could not hear either one
of us working. But with the Elecraft gear I just move the filters off to
the side a bit to weaken the QRM and all is well. I keep reading about
the sun going back to sleep but that's OK; we did just fine during the low
part of the solar cycle. Maybe one day we shall get the large numbers of
sunspots with the requisite ionization where propagation will be
fantastic. I have yet to be skunked any time I have run the nets so why
worry about the sun and its foibles?

If anyone is interested in acting as a relay station on either net
please email me. I will turn the net over to you for a few minutes so you
can call areas in my skip zone. It sure would prove helpful to those I
cannot reach directly.

Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.

1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call)
2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP relay help)

Sunday 2200z (Sunday 3 PM PDT) 14050 kHz
Monday z (Sunday 5 PM PDT) 7045 kHz

Stay well,
   Kevin. KD5ONS

Re: [Elecraft] rubber band vfo

2011-05-27 Thread John Cooper
Well it just so happen both my girls back tires were flat so I cut the tube
out of one and reversed it and cleaned it and stuck it on the k2. Once I
armor all it and get the powdery talc off of it I think it will look stock.
definitely like the feel of it now. Also went ahead and took some 1/2
shrink wrap and reversed it so the markings wouldn’t show and cut out 5
pieces for the 5 knobs(AF Gain, RF Gain, Keyer, Power and RIT knob.) My
harbor freight heat gun did the trick. Thanks for the tip!

I cut my K2 rubber band from a section of bicycle inner tube. If you can
find one a little smaller in diameter (probably a 1.125 to 1.25 tube), it
can be stretched to fit on the knob. The trick is getting parallel cuts
through the tube. It may have taken a few attempts, but the old tube
supplied lots of raw material.

[Elecraft] k160 led

2011-05-18 Thread John Cooper
while doing the zero beat led I went ahead and put in the rant led too since I
didn’t wanna reopen the front panel again. I don’t have the k160 board yet. I
soldered from the 2.7/4v to the led thru the resistor 180ohms to pin 7. I also
put in one 4700 cap to a ground on the control board plug and pin 7 of the rf
board. That was all. My kaf2 stopped being recognized after, sort of. It
would still work you hold it and the leds for it came on and you could hear the
difference in audio but the screen display would say not installed. The clock
would also say not installed but in the menu it would recognize and show on or
off. So after disconnecting the rant led from pin 7 on the front panel the
kaf2 works normal now.

Wow that was a lot, my question is do I need to isolate pin 7 from the auxbus
by cutting the trace like Im supposed to do on the 160 board when I get it?
Theirs 2 red arrows with a space on your schematic I assumed that was a plug.

[Elecraft] LED's in K2 keycaps

2011-05-13 Thread John Cooper
Ok Ive got LEd’s in the keycaps in the Mode/Vox switch for transmit A=B/Split
for rit/xit/ and split mode, and XFIL/AFIL for audio filter on.

Still Planning on the rant switch light in the ANT 1/2/TUNE button when I buy
the 160M option and the CW zero beat light in the PRE/ATT/SPOT cap.

Now I wanna do the same thing for Rate/LOCK key to light when you have the
VFO knob locked out and for the NB/LEVEL switch when the NB is on. Has anyone
looked at adding lights for these 2 functions?

[Elecraft] 14.316 birdie found!

2011-05-06 Thread John Cooper
Not meaning to start the entire thread again just wanted to say I found where
my 14.316 birdie was. I have a Ramsey DTMF Tone grabber kit that was making
the noise. Unplugging it from the power supply really made a difference. I
had it hooked to the speaker out jack of my kenwood tm 261a it displays the
numbers anyone punches in on a repeater using their mic. I found it after
finally getting the battery option and going for a ride around the neighborhood
to try to find the source and their was nothing, so I walked around the house
and yard and still nothing. Back on the mfj 4245 supply it came back so at
first I thought maybe that was it but then I started unplugging things from the
rigrunner which I should of tried a long time ago.

Now I am ready for the net on either frequency 73’s WT5Y

If there is consensus to change, I propose the possibility of 14.305.
It's lightly used as far as I know. There are nets during the week from the
beautiful day net at 92 central time
And some Saturday's. There's the west coast prestigious group net at 1pm
central. Not sure if they are on the weekend. Some of you west coasties may
know. Other than that it's fairly quiet. The 24hr maritime net is far enough
away at 14.300. Sometimes QRM from 14.307.5. If 14.304 would be far enough
from the maritime net, then itwould be better in case of activity on
14.307.5.

[Elecraft] 14.316 help!

2011-04-24 Thread John Cooper
Ok on the MA5V vertical I can hear a carrier on 14.316 and on the dipole the
carrier is twice as bad on 14.316 pretty much from 14.315-14317 is unusable. I
was thinking this was an internal birdie but would changing antennas make a
difference? Now I suspect its something local. Anyone else noticed this? If
it is something inside the radio causing it is their any mod I can do to at
least move it off the Elecraft SSB net freq?

Ive had 2 ec2 enclosures which I used for 2 kat100’s and kpa100’s remoted
which means I have 2 leftover tops 2 leftover bottom rear heatsinks and 2
leftover front panel pieces. Theirs a few scratches from being in my desk
drawers but still nice overall. Any interest in them? These do not make a
complete ec 2 enclosure! There is no bottom panel or side panels, no screws no
kickstand or rear feet or 2d fasteners. If interested I can take pictures.

Oh don’t forget to tin your iron tip every time and wipe off the excess
before you solder the component, you want a nice shiny tip that will
transfer the heat otherwise you have to hold it their a long time I have
lifted traces like that but it was because the tip was dirty and took a lil
too long to melt the solder or I was using a throw away plug in iron.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Control board booboo?

Sorry, I got the subjects mixed up - ignore the subject line on my
last post, The proper subject is in this post and the text is copied
below. Sorry for the excessive bandwidth and any confusion I caused.

Wayne,

It looks like somehow the plated thru-hole was damaged somehow - that is
unusual, but you proved it can happen. From your photo location, It
looks to be R12 instead of R18. R12 is an 820 ohm resistor, R18 is just
a jumper wire.

Looking at Tom Hammond's board images (available for download at
www.n0ss.net), that you are OK - solder it on the bottom side (same side
the resistor is located).

Just to make sure the entire network is intact, after soldering it (on
the bottom side), use your ohmmeter and check for continuity from that
lead to P2 pin 10, P4 pin 10, and the non-grounded side of C11 - put one
lead on R12 and the other lead on the points mentioned.

Just for completeness, check the other side of the resistor too - it
should show continuity to U6 pin 2.

If all those checks are OK, then you are good to go - if any of them
fail, you can use wire to connect the points that have no continuity -
all is not lost, it can be repaired.

If that solder pad lifted by just inserting the resistor lead, then the
thru-plated hole may have been defective (very unusual), but if the pad
lifted when you attempted to solder it, take note and turn your
soldering iron temperature down, it was too hot.

I've just soldered R18, which is on the back of the K2 control board.
This picture is of the front of the board. Right in the middle of the
picture is one of R18's leads, and encircling that lead, a tilted white
ring that looks like what was on the board, encircling the hole, before
I started soldering. It has lifted off of the board, buoyed by the
solder, and is sitting there like a winning ring-toss.

What is it? Is it bad? What do I do now?

 Best Regards,
 Wayne Conrad

[Elecraft] key dot weight

2011-04-10 Thread John Cooper
On the K2 menu you can vary the key weight from .090-1.40 (90-140%) according
to the manual. Did this and played with the paddle but cant tell any
difference. What am I listening for?

[Elecraft] using a scope on a k2

2011-04-08 Thread John Cooper
How would I use a scope to monitor key clicks on cw, and the waveform on ssb?
Also anything else I can do with a scope too? This is in reference to a K2 IE
where do the probes go and so forth. Off list is fine too. Couldn’t find any
definitive answer in the archives.

[Elecraft] paddle key training

2011-03-25 Thread John Cooper
Anyone know of any google or youtube videos or a website that shows how to use
a key like the bencher by-1 or 2. Also I would like to poll those that use
paddles do you have dits on the left or right paddle? Curious as to what the
majority uses.

My K2 is up and running from getting it yesterday. At least to where you check
out the basic functions. Starting Reciever and PLL Synthesizer tonight.

You now have
the distinction of being #3 on my list of those who like the idea of
building their own advanced radio completely from scratch, should we
ever have the courage to explore that path :)
