to drive my LO synthesizer and the discrete outputs to throw relays and

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Mutek Transverter combo?

2013-06-10 Thread John D'Ausilio
Well .. I just spent the weekend integrating a K3 with a set of
transverters for 144/222/432MHz ..

Assuming you have the KIO3 and the KXV3, it's a piece of cake. You'll have
to bust open your transverter to determine whether it's been configured for
split or combined IF and what drive level it's expecting (your description
of the connectors tells me it can be configured either way). If it's split
you'll need the KXV3, if not you can likely use the HF output connector
(possibly with a switched attenuator for TX). PTT can be had on the ACC
connector if you're using 0dBm IF levels, else it can be taken from the
rear panel PTT OUT jack. If you need to do more complicated things, there
are a few other handy open-collector outputs on ACC (like DIGOUT0 and 1)
that can come to the rescue ..

I was hoping that someone on this site has successfully mated the 2 boxes

there are 2 BNC sockets marked 'rx out' and 'tx/rx'. To what sockets on the
I/O board to I need to connect these? And secondly, what do I need to
ensure that the K£ is suitably programmed to communicate with the

Any help would be appreciated. If the Mutek transverter is no good anyone

[Elecraft] k3 band up/down skips transverter band

2013-06-06 Thread John D'Ausilio
I'm getting ready to go out roving for the first time with a K3 as the IF

but for some reason the rig skips 144 and goes to 222 on band up (and
similarly skips 144 and goes to 50 on the way back down). If I direct freq
enter a 144MHz frequency it correctly selects xv1, it just won't go there
with the band up/down.

Any ideas?

something more than just temperature drift as the frequency will sometimes

 different modes of oscillation.

Prodding wiggling the components in the LO circuit doesn't point to any
obvious poor connection, although the crystal itself is sensitive to being
touched, or heated by a finger. The LO alignment voltage at TP1 peaks at
 about 3.3V.

I don't have the temperature oven for the crystal, although I think it's a
requirement. But I'm concerned about the frequency jumping and a frequency
drift of almost 10kHz which I would not expect even of a non-temperature
 controlled crystal oscillator.

Any thoughts or pointers as to what could be wrong?

You can drive the K3 with just 1mW of power from the XV144.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the KRC2 .. red-headed stepchild of
the Elecraft line ;)

I use a KRC2 with a K2 to switch 6 microwave bands in the Jitney ..
903 through 10G. The radio displays the correct frequency with the GHz
lopped off. I reprogrammed the KRC2 (no programming required, just run
a commandline utility) such that it turned on 2 source and 2 sink pins
per band, with another pair of source and sink which turns on for any
microwave band. The outputs of the KRC2 can do a few hundred
milliamps, but the total package power is probably limited to under an
amp (e.g. use drivers for stuff that uses more than a few 10s of mA).
I drive two 1P6T relays plus some logic and a bunch of DEMI relay
boards.

It's not out-of-the-box, but it's been very reliable .. you'll likely
need to be able to do simple glue circuitry, diode or gates,
drivers, etc to make a complete solution

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] K60XV 0dBm output

2012-01-02 Thread John D'Ausilio
Well, for those following along I've figured this out ..

Backstory: I rove in V/U/uW contests with 11 bands, using a pair of
K2s as IF radios, a stack of XVs for low 4 bands, and a collection of
surplus, commercial, and homebrew stuff for the microwaves through 24G

Last winter's project was a move of the IF from 144 to 145MHz, but I
did this by tuning the K2 up to 29.1 and didn't pay attention to the
fact that it's only supposed to go up to 28.8 .. the net effect being
reduction in RX and TX both. I discovered this when I was working on
the level conversion project .. I couldn't get much power from the uW
K2. The low-band K2 was fine, with it's IF at 28.1, and that's when I
realized what was going on.

I ended up applying Sverre's 10M filter mod and tuning 10 up to 29.1
.. I now get +2dBm at 29.1 and just a tad under +1dBm at 28.1, which
is exactly what I need :)

[Elecraft] XV144 - power input to RF module

2011-11-20 Thread John D'Ausilio
I'm considering modifying the XV144 I use in my microwave rover by
removing the RF power module. It looks like I should get around +10dBm
or so from the driver stage alone, which is just what I need to drive
the mixers in my transverters while being low enough to prevent major
damage on sequencing failure, etc. Has anyone done this and measured
the output?

2011-11-07 Thread John D'Ausilio
Add an l to the url ;) http://www.qsl.net/ve3sma/downloads.html

I used Don's circuit on my low-band K2 (driving one each
50,144,222,432 XV) and an external sequencer in the Jitney .. the last
step of the sequencer enables TX in the K2. Steve's solution does it
in one board and doesn't require any mods to the K2, and it's
relatively easy to isolate 0dBm ..

I also use a filter similar to Steve's .. happened to have one of
Diz's universal low-pass filters
(http://kitsandparts.com/univlpfilter.php) in the kit box and built it
up for 10M and that eliminated a number of weird behaviours on TX ..

I did not have success with that link you posted - I got a 404 error.

There is another solution to inhibit CW until a sequencer has completed
and gives a signal back to the K2.  It is my article on PTT for CW on my
website www.w3fpr.com.  It interrupts the keying unless the PTT signal
to the K2 is present (start the sequencer with a footswitch or other
 switch external to the K2).

Yes, the K60XV option does not like VHF RF on the coax connected to the
TX jack - it interferes with the K2 power control.  A low pass filter
with a cutoff below 50 MHz (and above 28 MHz) cures that problem  A low
power in-line low pass filter works fine.  The problem does not exist if
the high power BNC output from the K2 is used.

The K2 makes quite a nice IF rig for VHF transverters, but it has a few

 www.qsl.net/ve3sma/downloads.htm .

First is a sequencer which switches the RF to the transverter to prevent it
from transmitting while its internal antenna relay is switching.  This deals
with the lack of any way to stop the K2 from transmitting on CW when the key
 is pressed.

The other is a bandpass filter which gets rid of most of the problems due to
the high RF sensitivity of the transmit IF output circuitry to RF.

These are not extensive articles, but there should be enough there for

[Elecraft] KRC2 + K3 - wiring?

2009-05-19 Thread John D'Ausilio
Seems to be a conflict .. the KRC2 manual sez ground wire between KRC2
p1 and K3 ACC p5 (which makes sense), KRC2 errata say to use K3 ACC p6
(which is DIGOUT0 and doesn't make sense to me). In any case, I've
wired the first way and AUXBUS from KRC2 p6 to K3 ACC p2. I'm getting
ERR PTT and weird behaviour .. almost as if I'm on 1 and 4 rather than
2 and 5 on the ACC connector, but I've checked and rechecked - the
diagram in the manual matches the numbers stamped in the connectors
and everything seems sane there also.

Anyone got any clues before I give up and put the K2 back in the jitney?

[Elecraft] OT: How to reply to a thread, and why it's important

2008-03-06 Thread John D'Ausilio
Sorry for the spam, but I quit smoking tobacco last week and I'm in a
foul mood, and this is one of my pet peeves (along with HTML mail) ..

minor rant
Those who use a threading mail program (Gmail is a great example) see
a thread as a group of messages all clumped together to make it easy
to read in context. You've probably noticed that often times a reply
to a thread will show up at the top level rather than in it's
sequential place in the thread .. creating a new, different thread
than the original. Then some people might reply to the new thread
while others reply to the original thread .. maybe yet another new
thread gets created. Ever wonder why?

Well, it's because some people do not use the Reply button, but
rather copy/past a subject line into a new email and post that. Seems
sensible at first blush, but doing so breaks threads .. bad netiquette
and unnecessary to boot. The key is in the (generally invisible) mail
headers. Every email has 'em, and you can make them visible in all
email clients one way or another (in gmail click on the little
dropdown box at the top left of any message and View Original). The
headers of interest for this topic are the Message-ID, In-Reply-To and
References headers.

Here's some of the headers from a recent top thread message on the
Elecraft list:

Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Wed, 5 Mar 2008 18:08:28 -0800 (PST)
To: Elecraft Reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net
From: Lee Buller [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [Elecraft] K3: Stereo Speakers - What are you using?

And here's the relevant headers from it's first reply:

Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Wed, 05 Mar 2008 20:38:21 -0600
To: Lee Buller [EMAIL PROTECTED], elecraft@mailman.qth.net
From: Tom Hammond [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3: Stereo Speakers - What are you using?
In-Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
References: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Notice how the In-Reply-To header from Tom's reply has the Message-ID
from Lee's original message? That, dear friends, is the key to
threading .. and those headers are only generated when you hit the
Reply button! When a user tries to get around the Reply button for
whatever reason, those headers are not generated and the thread is
broken..

So .. please use Reply often and responsibly, and help clean up all
the broken threads. It's true that reckless use of Reply (and Reply
All) can result in embarrasing situation when mail which is intended
to be private ends up on a list, but you should always examine the
generated reply before hitting Send anyway :)

Have a great day, everyone!

 It's a 2-story structure and it's virtually impossible to

Cutting groves in the wall board from each outlet down

damage the wallboard and still require its replacement.

There seems to be no realistic solution ...

I built my shack, garage and shop onto the house and
they -DO- meet all codes. There is a dediacated breaker
panel feeding this addition and there are 17 ground rods

Re: [Elecraft] Fan for XV144

I don't know that the XV432 fan is going to do you a lot of good. The
PCB on the '432 has holes cut in it to provide airflow through the
chassis while the others do not. Ultimately it's the bottom panel that
serves as the heatsink for the power amp module, so I'd think raising
it up and putting some airflow on that panel would be helpful.

[Elecraft] Delay between key in, key out on XV

2007-08-18 Thread John D'Ausilio
I've been searching around and I can't seem to locate any information
on whether and how much delay there is between key in (or 8R) and key
out on the XV series transverters. I need an early PTT for my
about-to-be-integrated outboard T/R relays .. I've got a external
sequencer solution, but I got to thinking that if there's at least 50
or 100 ms delay coming out of that I could get rid of the diode on the
key in connector and use the 8R to fire a driver for the T/R relay.
Anyone know?

I run a stack of 4 XVs driving high-power TE amps in my rover.
Antennas are short yagis spaced relatively close to each other on one

of RF present on the unselected transverters, whose configuration
leaves the gate of the PHEMT connected to the antenna connector in
that state.

I suspect bandpass filters would probably eliminate the problem (I

[Elecraft] XV mods

2007-03-20 Thread John D'Ausilio

sorry about that, accidentally hit send :)

I don't know if others have had the issues I've had with the XV
transverters, but I thought I'd report on my efforts this weekend ..

I run a stack of 4 XVs driving high-power TE amps in my rover.
Antennas are short yagis spaced relatively close to each other on one

of RF present on the unselected transverters, whose configuration
leaves the gate of the PHEMT connected to the antenna connector in
that state.

I suspect bandpass filters would probably eliminate the problem (I
have one on the 6M station and it's not given me any problems), but
space is at a premium in the rover. I decided to modify the XVs in the
following fashion:

I remove the jumper from the antenna connector to the pad leading to
the common on K1, and attach it to the W3 pad that's connected to the
NO contact, then cut the trace between the NO contact and W3 (leaving
W3 and the N connector connected to the output circuitry).

I short the K1 common to ground.

K1's NC contact is conveniently already tied to the input circuitry,
and I add W2 for split output.

Cut trace to K1 coil and reroute to 12V (powered when XV selected).

This repurposes K1 to short the input circuitry to ground whenever K1
is not energized (XV not selected). It's an easy mod for 6/2/222, but
a bit of a PITA for 432 (W3 is under K1).

I've also modified my TE amps by removing the T/R relay, and am adding
external T/R after the amp.

While building my KSB2 I was wondering about and came up with an idea.

I wonder if many poor solder joints occur because of the lead moving as
the soldering tip is removed. In the case of an IC, while I'm applying
heat, I'm pushing against the chip's lead. When I remove the soldering
iron, the lead is going to spring back just a bit (i.e. move) as the
solder connection is cooling. Could this be a major contributor to poor
solder joints?

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 + K2 + XV + PC = cabling confusion

side of the KRC2 .. 2,3,5 to the PC, 6,8,9 to the XV and added

total cable length on AUXBUS, from K2-KRC2-XV is about 4 feet ...

I'll know later today when it moves off the bench and into the jitney :)

John;

As I recall your configuration, your KRC2 uses the band info from the
Auxbus to select the various transverters. I don't believe that it
needs the RS-232 communications for your use. This means that you
can fabricate a cable that connects the K2's serial port to the
computer. The KRC2 and the XVT both need most of the remaining
signals, so you can connect them from the K2 to the KRC2 and the XVT
in any convenient fashion. The easiest would be to cable from the K2
to the KRC2, then from the second KRC2 connector to the XVT. You
might want to look at the cable fabricated for the KAT100, it
provides the connections you need, so something very similar might be
the way for you to go.

Good luck with it, let me know if you need help.

Last time out I ended up using an IC706 as the IF rig when the
equipment I was going to use didn't work. So now this time I'd like
all these things to play together .. the K2 driving an XV and the KRC2
 and Roverlog.

Looking at the KRC2 manual, it sort of indicates an either/or
scenario, and jumpers determine whether the PC side of the cable gets
AUXBUS ans 8R and other control signals. Since I want a PC on there,
can I just parallel the K2 end? I was using a straignt serial molded
9-pin cable between the K2 and the KRC2, now I'll have to build one
(or maybe just hack into it and splice).

[Elecraft] KRC2 + K2 + XV + PC = cabling confusion

2006-09-02 Thread John D'Ausilio

So .. not a moment too soon. I've completed the new XV144 to use as
the intermediate IF in my rover microwave setup. Now I've already
configured the system such that the K2 connects to a KRC2 with a
custom map, and the KRC2 switches around all sorts of stuff for me.

Re: [Elecraft] PTT options in K2 firmware?

Look at the break delay setting .. I use a pair of K2s with my V/U/SHF

that's why you would need hard PTT .. but maybe I'm wrong?

Assuming you meant 22 mW, you should indeed use the 251 mW setting of
the jumpers. The 1 mW setting is for 1 mW maximim. You'll be able to
use the input level control to tweak the transverter to full output
for your drive level.

Re: [Elecraft] FW: [Moon-net] Elecraft K2 IF for EME

2006-07-13 Thread John D'Ausilio

I actually posted the start of this thread here a couple of days ago ..

They've got valid points for EME, but they don't apply so much to
typical VHF/UHF contest work. I've only got one rove in using the
Elecraft stuff .. the low band station worked great once I got the
right combination of IF cables and Ts. Strong signal performance was
great, conditions were so poor that there wasn't much weak signal
around :(

The high band station ended up using an IC-706, but that was a failure
in the 144-28 xverter .. we used the K2 as the bandswitch, because I
had integrated everything from 903-10G using a custom-mapped KRC2

I'll have more to say in the fall after I get more experience and
tweak out some bugs, but so far I like it

I would appreciate hearing all responses to this subject because I was
considering using the K2 (or maybe the K3?) for weak signal work
someday. What are the major strengths/weaknesses of the K2 in this area,

There are some very knowledgable people on this list and your experience

All,

I used to have a K2 and I share the same comments you have mentioned as
well as Shawn's one. Aside a number of minor things, I was mostly
annoyed by the bad ripple of the IF filters too, which is not a trivial
thing. They kept the filters area still at a 'very kit level' , maybe it

would have been better to put some extra effort there.

Another major draw back for me it was the 10Hz step tuning, which with
the very tight DSP set at maybe 50Hz BW it didn't really ensure a proper

operation in CW/weak signals. Yes one could eventually set the RIT as
the 'fine resolution tune' but then the split function was lost and, in
my case, I could not compensate the doppler anymore thus being obliged
to use another rig in TX...

This is just to report my practical experience, it is not my intention
to bias any soul. Aside this, I also have to report that building the
radio was definitely a nice experience bringing a lot of satisfaction
and excitement during its progression.

D.W. Harms wrote:
 Hi Don e.e.

Besides my home mde transceiver I have the K2 with a built in DEM
transvertor (144-28 ECK) in use since Januari 2004.
In combination with the transvertor it slightly outperforms my home
made
transceiver. I can highly recommend the radio!

There are only two things that bother me:

 1. The throughput gain on 28 MHz seems to be low. I made a seperate
output
on the rig to bring the 28 MHz signal to my Drake R7/Tr7 combination
and I
have obviously more signal there. This of course could influance the
 overall noise floor...
The K2 really marvels at the lower HF-bands, but the front-end filters
on
28 MHz are not that good. That is probably why the excellent
strong-signal
behaviour for which the K2 is well-known, is not too obvious on 28
MHz. I
sometimes think about replacing the frontend filters, or to change the
IF
 to 14 MHz.

 2. The IF-filter seems to produce some ripple, as reported by another
ham
here on moonnet. Of course this is a killer in weak signal work! I
have
not noticed it myself, but heard others (PA0CHN) complain about it.

It was fun building the radio during the x-mas holidays together with
my
youngest son. So if you are looking for a heatkit-like project, then
go
 for it!
It is a superb radio for portable work. I use it in combination with a
300W mosfet amp for MS-work and have good experiences. It is probably
much
better than the average portbale multi-multi band rice-boxes...

I am not too sure yet if it is the best radio for weak-signal EME
work. I
have to do some more investigation. It is hard to judge given the
fact
that I have lots of urban noise, something that EVERY radio would
suffer
 from hi!

I also saw a remark about microphones. Well, I have used the K2 wit
both
an electret and a MD-microphone. Both worked well, though you should
not
expect HIFI reports... But then again, I am no fone-fan so I dont
bother
 too much...

[Elecraft] mutiple XV daisy-chaining

2006-06-09 Thread John D'Ausilio

So, how do you do it? I originally set mine up to use all BNC
plumbing, tees and female barrels with a right angle at the end. This
is giving inconsistent result, presumably because of inaccuracy in
spacing and stress on the plumbing. Today we've been trying various
combinations of stubs to the plumbing, but it seems like attenuation
is killing us (cables range from 12-24, RG-58). It seems like that
milliwatt is pretty easily lost in cabling/plumbing. So, those of you
with multiple XVs, how do you do it?

Problem is if I enable *any* level of compression, the XV buzzes on
voice peaks and my signal sounds crappy. Best results were with SSBA=3
and SSBC=1-1 (using an MD-2 desk mike). Evidently some of the RF is
making it's way back inside the XV. Cabling is all good, shielded
cable to key the amp/Accuvolt, normal shielded auxbus cable. Even with
the 1-1 setting I get the buzzing whenever I drive the amp much above
300W.

[Elecraft] XV combo side panels

2006-03-16 Thread John D'Ausilio
XV owners .. I'm going to be fabricating a set of replacement side
panels for the XV series next week. They will replace the existing
side panels to allow a stack of 4 XV's to be mounted together, spaced
so that BNC T-s and barrels will connect the in/out if ports, and will
have a bend and mounting holes at the bottom to allow the stack to be
attached to a desktop (this is all for my rover). Since we'll have a
template, it occurred to me that maybe other XV users might be
interested in this project. If so, please email me OFF-LIST and let me
know you're interested. Don't have a cost estimate yet, but I can't
see how it would be that awfully expensive ...

Re: [Elecraft] Output power of 6m Transverter with K2/100?

2006-03-10 Thread John D'Ausilio
Assumption: you're talking about the Elecraft XV-50

The XV outputs 20W independent of the drive configuration. It can be
driven with as little as 1mw of 28Mhz power. Assuming you use a K60XV,
the existence of the 100W bit doesn't matter .. without K60XV you
would use the original output connector, see the XV series manuals for
more info.

 Hi Guys

Thanks Don, Matt and others answering on my issue.

I have now seen the light. I was deeply in to a engineering mode, where i
tried to do everything according to spec. The spec on the XV144 say
IF input from 28MHz to 30MHz and a output from 144-146 MHz. Then the thing
need to operate in that area and the natural place for alignment
would be 145MHz in the midt of the window. And being in engineering mode my
thinking was that the K2 was designed to match the XV144

Now you guys brought me back to real world. Why would I run the transverter
with K2 That do not do FM above 144.8, that in Denmark are
the border line to the the FM area (144.8 and up.)

So trying to cover most used areas for CW and SSB i should properly align at
144.3. Where the output from K2 should be at full level and no
 issues should be seen.

Sometime i guess my education is of no use where looking at all the spec and
stuff are the thing to do, when just a little common sense it
 needed. :-)

 Michael,

That is normal - the K2 spec for 10 meter coverage is 28.0 to 28.8 MHz at 10
watts output and it falls off more rapidly at the high frequency end than
 the low end.
You may be able to increase the usable coverage at the expense of the
maximum available output by peaking the 10 meter bandpass filter at some
frequency higher than the 28.2 point that is indicated in the manual. I
would suggest peaking at 28.8 or even higher if you need to achieve good
power output over the entire 28.0 to 30.0 MHz. If you do that, check the
maximum power output at both ends of your chosen band and try to balance the
maximum available power at both ends - adjust the peaking frequency up or
down to achieve good coverage over your desired range.

The SSB Firmware was ok, version 1.8 so no problem there.

Now i have found the issue on the K2, but not the solution. The desribed
issue seen on the low power out are comming from the 28-30 Mhz.
  if i check
indicated power by the internal powermeter it drops over the
  freq. with the
power set for 5W i do reach 5.4 W on 28 Mhz at 29 Mhz it is 4,9, still ok
but at 30 Mhz it is down at 0,3 W
So trying 10 W 29 Mhz only goes to same 4.9, so a rolloff on increasing
freq. are seen. Proberly normal, but passband seems to be to narrow ???

Any idea is this normal ??

dip it in paste or liquid flux and then into the pot. Solder
manufacturers sell bar solder (with no flux) for use in solder pots.

flux on the top, so I skim the top as it is heating to leave a thin layer on

removing the burn't enamel some other way? Also what temp works the best,
this thing smokes pretty good at 750*F and seems to burn the flux. Anything

bothered me and that is my alignment of the CW and SSB filters - my main
problem is that I only have a basic understanding of what I'm doing - I feel
I need a better understanding which will result in a better alignment of the
 filters for both modes -
  - here's what's bothering me - I can tune in a cw signal on the widest
 filter position XFIL#1 and when I switch to positions 2, 3, 4 [I've set
them for 1.50, 700, 400, 100 cycles], I either lose the signal and have to
retune for it or the signal is there but certainly a different tone and down
in volume - it seems to me that if I have them set right, I shouldn't have
to retune and the volume should be ok -
  - so I got out my N0SS noise generator and put a new battery in - booted up
the 10 minute Spectrogram program, set it's parameters according to
instructions I printed off the Elecraft Builders' Resources, set markers at
600 2000 hz and turned on the noise generator - then I went through all
the steps, 1 through 15, for the CW alignment and adjusted the waveforms for
each position - then returned the K2 to normal operation -
  - I tuned in a 40 mtr cw signal in the widest position, then switched in
the next xfil position - the signal disappeared and I had to retune it in -
then when I switched XFIL through the other positions I didn't have to
retune - maybe I've made some progress seeing I don't have to retune xfil
 positions 2,3, 4 -
  - so I'm looking for suggestions on how to approach this procedure so I can
tune in a cw signal in position 1 and then switch in xfil positions 2,3, 4
and not lose the signal - then of course I'll be looking at SSB - tnx 73

[Elecraft] Rover progress - transverter builds

2006-01-25 Thread John D'Ausilio
Moving along in the direction of the mostly-all-Elecraft rover
station, I've completed the 50 and 144Mhz transverters and should wrap
up the 222 this evening. As expected, the Elecraft transverters were
enjoyable to build and worked the first time (once I corrected my
jumper config screwups). I did find a small problem with my K60XV
during testing .. the input coax center conductor had detached from
the BNC connector.

Initial tests indicate performance at least as specified (and maybe a
bit better). Going to do noise figure and sensitivity testing next
week, but casual beacon listening and comparison to a DEMI/TS-850
looked very promising.

The physical layout is very nice also .. K8ISK and I are working on
building new side panels which will attach to each of the 4 XVs and
tie them into a single unit, spaced convienently to allow BNC T and
barrels to connect them together (might even extend them to the K2,
which would make a monolithic 160M-70cm station with the footprint of
the K2).

Current plans are to drive the beast to Dayton for show+tell and
shakedown prior to the June test .. if it doesn't end up in the flea
market it'll be at the FDIM hotel. Contact me closer to the date for
personal tours :)

affect the transverter output as well? Going to troubleshoot some more

a web search and low and behold you can now buy a reprint for $16.03.

adjusted the AF level for optimum distortion level. It was independent of
the rig in use, and maybe it can be used for other digital modes like FSK

Does anyone have a clue or a web-pointer to what this is?

[Elecraft] K2 as IF for V/UHF and uW

2005-09-15 Thread John D'Ausilio
I'd love to hear from people who have been using the K2 as an IF for
v/u/micro contesting. I purchased a rover vehicle recently and I'm
thinking about abandoning the riceboxes it came with and move to
transverters for the low bands.

Current setup has dual FT-100's, which drive TE amps for 50, 144, and
432 directly and 222 using a 28Mhz IF. The microwaves (through 10G)
are all run with 144Mhz IF from an IC-706.

I'm thinking a couple of K2s with some switching of control and IF so
they can share a set of Elecraft xverters (hopefully including one for
432 eventually - hint, hint :) That would cover the bottom 6 bands
directly .. I'm tending towards an SDR solution for the top 4 anyway
that would give me a nice bandscope display.

Anybody out there roving with a K2?

take the Technician exam, so I'll have to supplement it with rules and
operating practices. I'm also going to supplement it with basic home wiring
 just for fun.

I'm not looking for a reference book, I'm looking for something that is
intended to be taught from. It might even have student workbooks and other
supplementary material. It doesn't have to be designed for home school; it
can be designed for bigger classrooms or maybe even a teach yourself
 electronics book that includes projects.

Ultimately (here's where we tie into topic of the Elecraft list) I'll have
them each build a K1 or KX1 but there's a lot to learn before we get there.

 Any suggestions?

A more sophisticated noise blanker is certainly possible. It would need
about twice as many parts, and to fit in the available space would
require nearly all SMDs, including 0603 size passives and TSSOP ICs.
This implies a completely pre-assembled module, which is one of the
things we tried to avoid in the K2 :)

Still, this is definitely on the wish-list. When we do get to it, we'll
be looking for testers who have all sorts of horrible noise to throw at
 it.

I'm staying at a house on the beach in Westbrook, CT for the week .. I
got a 16.5 foot crappie pole from Cabela's, a surf rod holder from
Benny's, tied an 87 foot piece of wire to the eyelet and at low tide
set the pole in the rod holder into the sand. It's been there for 6
cycles of the tides now and it looks like it's holding steady :) The
wire runs over a minimum of 20 feet of ocean, and maybe 55 feet at
high tide.

I have it connected to the red post on my ZM2, and a 17 foot
counterpoise hangs out of the window and is sort of run along the side
of the house (away from the water) attaches to the black post (link to
ground). It tunes fine on 80/40/30/20 with the ATS .. with the KX1 I
tune it by hand and then kick in the ATU so I don't have to manually
retune on 30/40. Guess I really should go over to the radioshaft and
see if they have a banana-to-bnc adapter to see how the KX1 handles it
alone ...
