Ken

Thanks for replying quickly.

I am reading the current (D10 version) manual, but on looking at your reply
I decided to check out the errata - and there it is :-

< Pg. 14 (VFO Tuning Controls): Holding SUB now turns diversity receive
on/off. To link VFOs, use CONFIG:VFO LNK >

And it works fine of course.

It would have saved me hours of head scratching if someone at Elecraft had
updated the manual .

made the long press of SUB the activation of Diversity. Linking is done

Hello all

I have a K3 with the sub-receiver installed, and working. But .

The handbook says < Holding SUB links the VFOs (whether the sub
receiver is on or off). The kHz decimal point of
VFO B flashes as a reminder. VFO A is the master,
moving both VFOs in tandem. >

I cannot get this to work. I can get the sub rx to be on or off (by tapping
SUB), and I can get Diversity to work as well (with a long hold of SUB).

What other settings can there be on the radio that make it impossible to
select moving both VFO's in tandem ? - which is exactly what I want.

Thanks, and seasons greetings !

[Elecraft] K3 wanted - UK

Hello all

I'm looking to buy a used K3 in the UK. Must be fully operational and must
include the USB rear connection. Not fussed about other options and would be
happy with 10w or 100w rig, with or without ATU. A K3S would also be
acceptable, if the price is affordable !

Please drop me a line off list, at j...@carltonhouse.eclipse.co.uk

Thanks

Hope you make a full and speedy recovery.

It is your aerial which radiates your transmitted signal - therefore
operating the radio from a different room is unlikely to help you, it might
even put you in a higher RF field.

However, if you are able to use the internet to remotely operate a friends
radio across town, that could be a way forward.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Sub receiver

2017-02-09 Thread John Lemay
Bill, Joe and Fred

Thanks for your quick replies. It certainly WAS the correct question to ask.

Fred has put his finger on the problem; my Windows settings had defaulted to
single channel audio. My question turns into "how do I get Spectran to look
at the other channel" but that's not an Elecraft question.

Why am I interested in the audio from the second receiver ? This goes back
to a problem with my K3 which on 28MHz has a large number of receiver
birdies - I posted about this a couple of weeks ago. The situation has been
improved by tightening all the panel screws absolutely as hard as I can. I'm
no weakling but it seems that I was being a bit too cautious. But some
birdies remain, and I noticed that they are at different levels and
different frequencies on the sub. So I was making a careful check and
listing the frequencies and signal level, using Spectran. But so far, only
on the main rx. Hence my question.

Wrong question. It's already there. The USB audio is stereo. The main RX is
on the left channel and the sub is on the right.

Question is what do you want to do with the sub RX audio?

I.e., for RTTY you'd need to run a separate instance if MMTTY and set input
from RTTY channel.

Don and Dave

Thanks for your replies. I've found the schematic for the W2 meter and
sensor and I can see now that there's a lot more electronics in the sensor
box than I thought. So rolling my own is not an option.

To answer "why" is easy ... I run more power on 2m and 70cms than the
sensor is rated, and would also like to include 23cms.

Thanks again

John,

There were some changes to the coupler done for it to be used for the TX
Monitor - capacitor changes as I recall.
If you want power and SWR reading accuracy, get a new RF Sensor. OTOH, if
your main interest is in the waveshape display only, then the W2 directional
coupler may give you what you desire.

Re: [Elecraft] No power out and no receive

If there is no receive capability at all on the radio it could be quite a
serious fault - either with the radio or the feeder or aerial.

I'd suggest that under these circumstances trying to transmit is a daft
idea. Rigs these days are pretty well protected, but not completely
foolproof.

Subject: [Elecraft] KPA100 U6 voltage issue

I recently began building a just-purchased KPA100 kit for my K2 #5191.  All
was well until I reached the voltage checkpoints on page 26.

U5 pin 1 is 0.8 volts (not 0 to 0.1)

U5 pin 7 is 0.9 V (not 0 to 0.1)

U6 pin 6 is 17 volts (not 0 to 0.5)

I am much more concerned about U6, but perhaps the U5 voltages give you more
information.

The no pa pa message comes up as expected, and the current indicated on the
k2 display is less than 400 ma.

The keys are in the correct places on the ribbon cable. Nothing has ever
been plugged into the DB9 port, so this is not the issue where a standard
serial cable damages the kpa100 through the aux port non-standard wiring.

The K2 appears to work fine with the partially built KPA100 disconnected.
Voltages on D9 of the K2 RF board (my proxy for V RFDET) are much lower than
17 volts (kpa100 not connected) so the high voltage appears to come from the
KPA100, not the K2.

I have the KSB2 installed, but haven't explored that its voltages, and
haven't tested whether it still works following the 17 volt incident.

I don't see any obvious solder bridges on the KPA100.

Where would voltages near 17 volts normally be found on the KPA100 board?

Thoughts on next steps?

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV power output and tune mode

2014-03-31 Thread John Lemay
Hello

Mine is much the same - it can run from about 3w to 9w max. It would be
great to have a larger range of adjustment in a more linear progression.

Am I supposed to be able to set any arbitrary power level between 0 and
10W on the K144XV? It looks like I can't go below 4-5 W, and the
relation between drive and output looks like it's extremely non-linear.

driveoutput
0.1 mW 4.2 W
0.2 mW 6.6 W
0.3 mW 8.5 W
0.4 mW 9.5 W
0.5 mW 9.7 W
0.6 mW 10.0 W
0.7 mW 10.6 W
0.8 mW 10.6 W
0.9 mW 10.6 W
1.0 mW 10.6 W
1.5 mW 10.6 W

drive as indicated by the K3, output is measured with a W2 (but I got
similarly looking results with a Diamond).

Seems to me there's no point in using more than 0.6 mW drive.
Also, does the transverter have a concept of TUNE power? Changing power
while in TUNE seems to also change the normal power setting.

Thanks for the attention

Pf

2014-03-02 Thread John Lemay
I think it is only fair that I grab one more email in order to put right my
earlier comments. I have opened up my weather station on the bench;
dismantling it as far as I dare. I could not see any problems and all the
electronics is potted against ingress so fault finding is near impossible. I
put it back together, and now it works !

So, I'm not sure why it failed and I suppose it might happen again, but I'm
very relieved to have it operational once more.

Re: [Elecraft] Would anyone like to see an all-mode VHF/UHFoffering from Elecraft?

2014-01-31 Thread John Lemay
Ed and all

Don't forget that the situation in Europe is somewhat different. In 6m and
2m IARU Region 1 contests there is the potential for 600 to 800 contacts in
a 24 hour period. On 70cms it's around 250 QSO's for the leading groups. And
in the UK we have VHF evening activity contests where almost 200 Q's can be
made in 2-1/2 hours.

So, point number 1 is that activity is higher and therefore the potential
sale of VHF rigs is different.

Point 1 leads to Point 2: This level of activity brings with it a very
demanding requirement on the receiver, to provide sensitivity for the
smallest of signals, and good selectivity and extreme dynamic range to cope
with your near neighbours. Elecraft know how to deal with big signals.

The reason I would support Elecraft going the VHF route is because the
performance of the current shack in the box multimode, multiband rigs is
woefully inadequate in the criteria listed in my previous paragraph.

See you on the Moon again sometime ..

Ted,

You really expected a VHF contest to sound like Field day on the HF
bands? That tells me that you do not regularly operate VHF-ssb.

I have been pleading with the FM repeater HT hams for years to
explore the fun of VHF-ssb/cw/digital modes with multi types of
propagation and the response is they don't have the time, the cash,
the know-how, the property that allows antennas, etc. etc.

There is plenty VHF multi-mode radios available plus a wide
assortment of transverters, plus very economical surplus multi-modes
from past years. Radio supply is not the problem. With the
exception of 2m-eme using digital modes there is just not much
interest by the usual VHF users and especially new hams. Satellite
use has dwindled due to lack of cheap launch capability so new
satellites are essentially orbiting repeaters for the most part.

A radio with the capabilities you request will be in the $3000 class
(If not more). A K3/10 + transverters will accomplish this if you
want Elecraft equipment at less than that (I think). Or one could
buy the KX3 and add the 2M module when it comes out. Then add
transverters for 222, 432, 1296.

In 2012, I sold my FT-847 to purchase a 222-28 and 432-28 transverter
to go with my K3/10 which I already had 144-28 and 1296-28
transverters. The K3 + transverters make a way superior combo than
any multi-mode VHF/UHF that I have seen.

I am QRV from 600m to 3cm!

Yes for CW.
This would be a GREAT way to get our Techs beyond the limits of operating
on the repeaters.

Some years ago, I had expected the June/Sept VHF Contests to replace Field
Day as the big participation event for local clubs as the new Techs would
discover the many other ways to use their licenses. It didn't happen, but
this might help move along greater participation on VHF/UHF. Good idea!

I was using the K3 today. The VOX kept cycling to transmit and back
with no voice input.

Sounded like an easy problem to fix. Just touch up the antivox.

Nope.

Listening in the monitor, there is a rushing sound with clicking (like
fans in the background or something with a superimposed woodpecker).
Clearly that spurious noise is what was tripping the vox off/on.

Next removing the mike plug, the rushing sound was still there.

With no mike input where is it coming from? Unlikely to be RFI since it
is there at 1 watt.

Setting the mike gain to zero and compression doesn't fix it.
Compression level does substantial increase or decrease it.

Any suggestions?

Re: [Elecraft] Serial Connection for K2

2013-11-06 Thread John Lemay
I similarly spent ages hunting down noise from my PC and associated cables.

There are USB leads available which have a transparent outer sheath, which
show off the silver plated screen. I thought this was just a gimmick, but
it turns out they were quite effective. Remember you'll probably need
ferrites on both ends of the run with a minimum of one turn through each
ferrite. For many purposes, just clipping a choke on the cable is not
effective - depending on your frequency of interest and the level of noise.

Good luck !

Hi,
I see ebay has some 8 port Edgeports for $50.
I'm looking to cut down on computer generate noise in my shack. Currently I
have 6 or 7 usb to serial adapters. I reduced noise quite a bit as shown on
the P3 using some ferrite cores but the whole mess is now quite a sore
sight. Not only that you need longer cables to wrap through those cores.
So here's a few questions: is it better to run one high quality USB cable to
a device such as an edge port and then run serial cables from there or have
many usb to serial converters and extensions?
Anyone have a source for properly shielded USB cables?
Thanks

If you want to go 'first class', use an Edgeport USB to serial converter -
I have a 4 port model that works flawlessly. Note that this is usually
referred to as a 'converter' rather than an 'adapter' - it is often used in
commercial environments and is quite robust - those termed 'adapter' are
usually intended for the consumer market, and the relative price indicates
that fact. When I bought mine, they were selling on Ebay for a very low
price, someone had a big pile of used ones that he was selling off.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Roofing filters

2013-08-06 Thread John Lemay
Ivan

You'll get as many different views here as there are combinations of
different filters !

Roofing filters are quite easy to add at a later date (ease depends somewhat
on the options installed), so my suggestion is to go lightly at first and
see how you get on with just a couple of filters, and rely on the DSP for
filtering - which is pretty good.

For SSB, consider either 2.4 or 2.1kHz. Anything narrower is obviously more
effective, but also tiring to listen to for long periods.

For CW I think the choice is easy - head for the 500Hz filter.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Mutek Transverter combo?

2013-06-11 Thread John Lemay
Peter

I have the internal 2m transverter for the K3, and the facility to use an
external one instead - so, yes, it can be done.

Here's my settings from the CONFIG menu:

XV1 ON = yes
XV1 RF = 144
XV1 IF = 28
XV1 PWR = L1.50
XV1 OFS = -0.61
XV1 ADR = Int Trn0

XV2 ON = yes
XV2 RF = 144
XV2 IF = 28
XV2 PWR = L1.50
XV2 OFS = 0
XV2 ADR = Trn1

Some of these settings will be unique (such as offset) but most will be
appropriate. The effect of these settings is that cycling up through the
bands from 50MHz gives me first the internal transverter (XVTR1 is displayed
briefly in the VFO B area) and then the external transverter ( when XVTR2 is
briefly displayed).

You can't quite do A/B comparisons with this unless you arrange relay
switching of your 2m antenna at the same time as switching internal to
external transverter.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Bit of a long shot this but has anyone any experience of using a K3 with a
Mutek transverter? I run the K3 (#7218) with the internal transverter but
during a 2m contest yesterday the front end capability of the internal
transverter was found wanting when exposed to strong adjacent signals. I
already have a Mutek transverter but it was bought (cheaply) as untested and
therefore I do not know if it is working. The strong signal capabilities of
these transverters were legendary in their day. Therefore, I was hoping that
someone on this site has successfully mated the 2 boxes together. Basically
what I want to know is at the rear of the transverter there are 2 BNC
sockets marked 'rx out' and 'tx/rx'. To what sockets on the I/O board to I
need to connect these? And secondly, what do I need to ensure that the K£ is
suitably programmed to communicate with the transverter (the instructions
seem to be unclear to me...).
Any help would be appreciated. If the Mutek transverter is no good anyone
got a decent Demi or completed Elecraft 2m transverter they wish to sell??!!

Many thanks for reading this plea. Any replies will be gratefully received
(which is more than I can say for the internal transverter performance
 yesterday!!)

has had problems like this? In SSB mode, keying the mic without any
audio causes the watt meter to show about 3 watts output power and 3:1
SWR. However If I hold the TUNE button and put out a carrier It shows
the expected 7-10 Watts forward with normal low SWR. It also appears to
show normal readings while speaking into the mic, but goes to the

With more compression it brings it out more obviously but it is there
with no compression.
It is there even on low mic gain but much less.

It even persists even with no microphone, data lead or cables plugged in.

I have unplugged EVERYTHING apart from the power, put monitor speaker
on, and PTT and it is there. At zero mic gain no noise but it rises as
the mic gain does.

If I cut the extreme high end it goes a little but I need some high end
boost for my mic.

Its not to horrendous, its only just perceptible I shouldn't think it
wouldn't carry through to audio with a 2.7Khz bandwidth but I cant be sure.

Can I just assume its just internal noise being picked up on the monitor
amp or do I have to worry about my TX audio quality?

Has anyone else noticed this effect? Do I have duff mic pre-amp
shielding somewhere?

Rich,

If you press the pedal to the metal a little bit more, that Edsel will
easily go up to 80 mph and run rings around those 'speed demons'. That
is if you can afford the gasoline it takes to do that. The Edsel was
created in the era of 'muscle cars' and had an engine to match, so it
can hold its own in the competition. It may not be as nimble as some of
today's cars, but it is superior in terms of raw horsepower.

I long for a replacement for my 1989 Mazda MX6 turbo, but it died after
300,000 miles - the replacement 2008 Mazda3 handles almost as well, but
lacks that turbo boost which made the MX6 a really fun to drive
vehicle - it was really a Zoom-Zoom car.

I'm sure this very question was asked only a few days ago - so, no you are
not the only one. Generally these seem to be at a very low level and are
often obscured by band noise - that will depend on the characteristics of
your location and aerial. The problem will be most clearly observed if you
have a low noise qth.

I found out about them when I used the K3/P3 combination with a 2m
transverter.

I have spikes (low intensity and wide) that do not move when the K3 is
tuned across the band. I assume they are internally generated, else they
would be tunable. Nothing should be displayed except actual RF signals
that can be tuned to.

They are not a big deal, but it is disappointing to see them on such an

As always, reply only to the reflector - to allow others to learn also.

2013-02-26 Thread John Lemay
Bob

I can't bring to mind any user setting which would cause this issue.
However, before getting out your sledgehammer, I suggest you run through the
TX Gain Calibration routine, which is in the manual - pay particular
attention to the Milliwatt Calibration because this is the power level used
to drive the transverter. I'm not 100% convinced this will help, because you
say that the 432MHz transverter behaves fine.

Given your earlier mentioned problem with the 144MHz transverter tx
frequency, it looks like the transverter has an obscure problem best
directed to the experts - Elecraft Inc.

One last suggestion, are you getting these results with amplifier and
aerials attached - possibly you have an issue with RF getting into your
power supply. If you can, see if the results of your test change when you
use a dummy load.

For some reason I have not received your original mail, so excuse my piggy
back on Don's reply.

Firstly, 5kHz is a long way off ! If people called me 5kHz away, I probably
would not hear them at all.

Secondly, as Don says, the way the transverter works, with just the same one
oscillator running for tx or rx, it is pretty much guaranteed not to shift
between receive and transmit. So my guess is that you may have accidentally
engaged the RIT or more likely the XIT, or perhaps the split frequency
option. Everything you would do on 28MHz, your baseband for transverting, is
faithfully reproduced on 144MHz.

Bob,

I don't see how that shift could be coming from the XV144. Its local
oscillator is running on the same frequency during receive and transmit.

I would check the K3 28 MHz output to see if the same thing occurs.

A guess --
It could be a mode thing. If the others are operating with CW in SSB,
your K3 should be set similarly. The default for the K3 is for CW to be
LSB - if others are operating with CW in USB, that could account for a
difference if you are changing modes on the K3.

The offset setting on the K3 is to account for any difference between
the actual frequency and the K3 transverter band reading, and is applied
to both transmit and receive.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 generates noise on 144 MHz

2013-02-12 Thread John Lemay
Roger

About a year ago when I was using my K3, K144XV and P3 combination I went
through most of the suggestions you have received . The noise floor was
reduced to almost satisfactory levels, but not quite.

Two further things occur to me: The DC cable to the P3 is just over a
quarter wave long on 2m, so making it a different length could help.
Secondly, I'm considering using a shielded cable (some cheap thin coax would
be OK because the current consumed by the P3 is low).

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] P3 generates noise on 144 MHz

Thanks to everyone who responded. With your help, I have already reduced the
noise level from S9+5db down to S6. The receiver noise floor is S3, so I
still have a little way to go. There is now no doubt that the P3 power cord
is responsible for most of the noise radiation. Putting the ferrite
clamp-ons on the power cord as suggested by David, G4DMP, had the biggest
effect. I also obtained a small improvement by removing some accessories
that were sharing the 12V switched output from the K3. I am using the power
cord supplied with the P3, but I had a splitter at the K3 end to feed power
to a keyer and pre-amp. The extra cables for these devices were acting as
additional antenna wires to radiate the 144MHz noise. However it seems to me
that the noise should not be getting onto the P3 power cable in the first
place. I looked at the P3 circuit diagram and was surprised to see that
there is no series inductor in the power lead as it enters the box. Every
other DC (or AF) connectio
n I could find in the K3/P3 was protected by a series inductor and usually
multiple bypass capacitors. There is a single bypass capacitor in the P3
power line. It is C500 with a value of 100nF. It seems to me that the
effectiveness of this bypass capacitor very much depends upon a very good
and direct connection between the I/O board printed circuit and the case.
This connection relies on the 4 screws associated with the two 9pin D
connectors. On re-reading the construction manual, I notice there is an
instruction at the top of page 41, to check the surface of the metal work
which mates with these connectors. At the time of construction I only gave
this a cursory glance. I may have been remiss here. I will polish this
surface with emery cloth and see if it makes any difference. I also tried
powering the P3 from another 12Volt power supply, but the noise remained at
S6. If I stretched the power cord in a certain direction the noise could be
made to drop to the receiver noise
floor (S3). I guess that this is because the power cord antenna has a
null towards my 2 meter antenna in this particular arrangement. This is a
solution, but not a very good one! I will continue my experiments and let
you know how they go.

It's easy to confirm both the preamp and atten effect on the signal using
the excellent built-in tools in the K3. Switch the display to show the audio
voltage, tune in a signal, and switch between 'in' and 'out' with your
preamp or attn noting the voltage level change.

To convert to dB, it's a simple log function found on most inexpensive
calculators:

dB= 20log(V1/V2) where V1 and V2 are the two voltage levels noted.

Of course you can do exactly the same thing to compare the gain (or loss)
when comparing antennas, etc., in the signal path.

My problem: Entering any 2m- QRG, e.g. 144.300 by pushing on the
 front panel
 FREQ ENT 1 4 4 . 3 0 0 ENTER (AFX) results in changing the K3 to
 180.300 MHz
 e.g. 145.525 results in 181.525 MHz ...
Always exactly 36 MHz too much! Also when entering QRGs by my
 contesting
 software via RS232...
The only way to activate 2m is using the bandswitch-button - then my
 K3
 starts with 144.000 MHz.

Another benefit of using short patch cables for the PR6 is that it's a bit
easier to access the connectors beneath it, like the paddle socket.

I've had complaints my FM signal is low in audio (which implies low
deviation). Mic gain control is inoperative in FM mode (turned up to
60 with no change). I checked CONFIG: FM DEV and it is set to 5.0
KHz. It can be raised to 6.0 but I haven't changed it as that seems
not the proper way to raise transmit audio. I'm guessing this
setting is fixed at the factory.

I have no RF level issues: signal is full quieting on FM. Even
yelling into the mic with my lips touching the mic makes no
difference (according to the listener).

Is there an epot to control this or hard pot inside the radio?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Setup and CM500 Headset Questions

2012-02-22 Thread John Lemay
Just to put the record straight:-

BIAS settings are ON or OFF.

GAIN settings are LOW or HIGH.

The front panel mic connector can have an additional gain stage switched in,
for exceptionally low output mics.

All on p52 of the manual (Rev D10).

The K3 can apply BIAS to either the Front 8-Pin Microphone Connector or the
rear 1/8 Connector. BIAS settings for both are OFF, LOW, and HIGH.

The K3 uses the Kenwood Microphone Connector pinout. Also if a Heil Adapter
is used, it has to be a version without the 1uF Blocking Capacitor. Heild
makes both one for use with their HC4 / HC5 Dynamic Elements and another for
use with their iC Electret elements.

The CM500 has electret condenser microphone. It require bias. If you want to
use front panel you have to use little battery box that came with the
headset. Just install the batteries and connect the battery box in series
with the microphone cable. If you decide to use rear panel, you do not need
the battery box, just need to use menu setting for rear panel mic with bias.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Setup and CM500 Headset Questions

Hello everyone. I have a couple questions for you. I have browsed the
archives and I was not seeing anything that was helping.

This is a new K3 to me, the guy before was primarily a CW operator. He did
not even own a mic. So I decided to buy the Yamaha CM500 headset and was
trying to get it all setup this evening. Below is some of the things I have
tried. In short, I am looking for the settings you have found to work.

I am following the Fred Cady guide that I bought online. I am in the setting
up
SSB section.

I was in test mode. When I was not in test mode I could get the TX light to
come on via the PTT foot pedal, the XMIT button and never VOX. I never
heard myself in test mode even when messing around with the Monitor,
Compression, MicGain, VOX Gain and the VOX Interrupt, Mic+Line (off). I am
using the Front Panel, Low, Heil adapter. I tried the
headphones/mic on the computer, they sound great and the mic picks up very
well.

So, with VOX not going off at all. I suspect the mic connection is not
getting to the radio. My headphones came with 1/8 to 1/4 adapters. 1
stereo and 1 mono.

the mic on the headset is 1/8 and goes directly into the adapter along
with the 1/4 PTT pedal. I then have the stereo 1/8 to 1/4 for the audio
and that is plugged into the front. I also wasn't sure what to connect
it to on the back since there are warning messages near the stereo
connectors on the back. I was afraid
to mess with anything there.

Is it a bias issue? A connector issue? Software setting?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Re: [Elecraft] Monitor (OT)

2012-02-10 Thread John Lemay
I think it's more important to consider the proximity of the monitor to the
aerial, rather than the amplifier. With a bit of luck, it's the aerial doing
the transmitting and receiving, not the amplifier. This brings several
variables into the equation, such as aerial gain and direction (if any),
height and distance from the shack. Add to that short list; power levels,
receive sensitivity, frequency in use and background noise levels

These variables will no doubt ensure a host of different answers for similar
monitors !

that all Samsungs are OK!

I bought a LCD monitor from Costco a couple of years ago - I'm fairly
sure it was a Samsung. It didn't have real buttons, but some sort of
touch-sensitive mechanism. Unfortunately it also turned out to be
RF-sensitive, and would turn the monitor off, or bring up the config
menu, etc., when I transmitted on certain frequencies. I returned it,
and bought a Viewsonic, which has real buttons, and have had no
problems with that one.

YMMV, of course

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Internal Tuner Question

2012-01-02 Thread John Lemay
John

I would struggle to explain this, but I'm quite certain that what you are
seeing is quite correct and nothing to worry about. The Palstar is showing
you the swr of the antenna and feedline. The K3 ATU is matching the
transmitter to this impedance. The ATU does not change the antenna
impedance.

I installed the KAT3 over the weekend and the construction and calibration
was successful. This evening I hooked everything back up to check reception,
tuning and swr. I have it set to AUTO, when I tap the ATU TUNE switch the
tuner does its thing and I read a 1.0:1 swr on the K3 meter. I have a
Palstar Wattmeter installed between the K3 and the antenna and for some
reason I am getting a high swr on the Palstar meter of 5:1 and don't
understand why. I have a multiband vertical antenna with a 4:1 Unun at the
base of the antenna. Am I missing something here?

A little hand holding would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] K3 and P3

2011-12-05 Thread John Lemay
Hi all

Rick said

If you have a P3, unplug the RS-232 connection(s) and it will show you
your audio during transmit. That way, you don't have to trust your ears to
make the adjustments in timbre.

Request (Wayne/Eric): Can we make the P3 have this ability without
unplugging the I/O? It's VERY handy to watch the transmit audio.

I second that request.

In addition, I wonder if someone could publish a few screen shots on their
web page to indicate good and bad examples of setting up the K3 transmit
side ?

Many thanks

[Elecraft] K3 TX Inhibit success

2011-12-03 Thread John Lemay
Further to my mail yesterday, I am now able to confirm that my system is
running with TX INHibit in use.

Primary control between RX and TX is achieved with a footswitch controlling
my sequencer. That in turn controls TX INHibit.

So, unless I hit the footswitch, the K3 will not produce any power from PTT,
VOX, XMIT, TUNE or internal voice keyer. It is, I think, as near foolproof
as possible, which is just what I wanted !

It'll get a good test tomorrow, we have an 8 hour 2m contest on Sunday.

[Elecraft] K3 TX Inhibit

2011-12-02 Thread John Lemay
Hello

I have a question about the TX INHibit function of the K3.

I want to use this with an external sequencer to ensure that my rig,
amplifier and masthead preamplifier (on 2m) are controlled in a safe manner,
and that even pressing the XMIT button or turning on VOX does not lead to a
mishap.

However, TX INHibit does not work as I expected:-

I have turned on TX INH with LO = INH. I have plugged a lead into the 15 pin
accessory socket so that pin 7 can be held low (in my test case, connected
to earth). That works fine and TX is inhibited (indicated by the flashing TX
icon).

When I remove the earth connection from pin 7 the rig remains with TX
inhibited - that's the bit I don't understand.

I can only get back to normal transmit operation by going back into the
CONFIG menu and turning off TX INH.

What am I missing ?

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] RX audio distorted on FM

2011-11-25 Thread John Lemay
Pete

I confirm it's normal and common with most rigs. But if you don't like the
background noise on FM you can use the squelch control to cut it out.
Careful setting of the squelch will ensure no background noise but as soon
as a weak station is received it will break the squelch and you will hear
it.

Yes, that is normal. When you switch to FM you are listening to a much
wider
portion of the band you are on.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 audio muffled?

2011-11-15 Thread John Lemay
Chuck

I agree with Joe's diagnosis. Try an experiment:-

Run 100w from the K3 alone and get a report. Then turn back the power so
that K3 plus amplifier is producing 100w. See if the report is now OK, or
muffled.

If the report is OK, it could be RF feedback which only occurs at high
power. If the report is muffled you might have an amplifier problem.

Chuck,

I had muffled audio reports while using a Tokyo Hi Power 1.2Kfx amp.
It has coming from RF getting into the amp. THP wrote it off, saying
nothing they could (would) do about it because I was on the second
floor. But... I now have a KPA-500 and have no problems on any band at
any power level.

Just a thought!

Joe N9VX

I have gotten a few reports of sounding like my audio is muffled as compared
to running the K3 alone. It is true that with several listeners in different
states, there is not a consensus of opinion on that. Some of the guys think
it sounds just fine, and some say they can hear a slight muffled sound with
the KPA turned on. The point of comparing it to K3 only and K3 with KPA500
is that the mic is not in the equation. The report is clearly that the amp
sounds muffled. Not unreadable, just slightly muffled.
I have a bias current of 0.4A...about the only thing I can think of to
check. I think there was some discussion of setting the bias current here,
but I can't find it again. What is the range of bias current for best
linearity? I don't see any help in the manual.

Whilst listening to SSB signals on 114MHz using the K3, K144XV, and P3 I
noticed that I can receive perfectly resolvable signals 11kHz either side of
the main signal.  Further investigation revealed that the spurious signals
are every 11kHz either side of the wanted but reducing in amplitude the
further away from the wanted signal I tune. The levels are -40dB, -60dB,
-80dB on the HF side and -50dB, -60dB,-80dB on the LF side.  All levels are
referred to the wanted signal and are my best guesstimate from the P3
display.  This is only on 144MHz and does not manifest itself on any other
band.

The only other observation is that the frequency calibration offset is
+5.34kHz rather than the +2.86kHz marked on the transverter.

If any one has experienced such observations and how to overcome them I
would appreciate your input before I contact our friends at Elecraft.

Chuck,

It is almost that simple. If you have a desktop PC, is that simple,
but you connect the K3 line out to the soundcard line-in and the K3 line
in to the soundcard line out. The levels should be within the range of
adjustment using the K3 controls as well as the soundcard volume
cotrols on the computer.

With a laptop, controlling the levels may be more complicated, and may
require some resistive dividers to work properly. For instance, the
laptop headphone output may be greater than what is normally considered
line level - although if the computer is expecting powered speakers,
that one *may* be OK. If you have a line out jack from the computer,
use that instead of the headphone output.

Connecting the K3 line out to the laptop Mic In, may prove to be
troublesome, although some laptops have a software setting that allows
either line level or mic level using the same jacks - if that is your
case, set it for line level. If your computer is stuck with only mic
level input, you may have to reduce the K3 line out signal level by
about a factor of 10. A 10k resistor in series with the K3 output line
plus a 1k resistor on the computer side of the 10k resistor from the AF
line to the AF return (usually the shield). Place that voltage divider
close to the computer end to keep noise pickup on that signal line to a
minimum.

Remember that the audio input level to the K3 is adjusted differently
than the traditional wisdom for other transceivers - use TX TEST to
set your input level (no RF will be transmitted), use DATA A submode,
and adjust the Line In level in the K3 (and/or the output volume and WAV
level in the computer) so the ALC meter illuminates the 4th bar with the
5th bar barely blinking. The K3 ALC action does not begin until the
audio level hits the 5th bar.

Good luck with your connections and with JT65.

 Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] Breakthrough from 28MHz to 144Mhz

2011-10-15 Thread John Lemay
Hello Roger

I also have the K3 with internal transverter. 10m is certainly lively today
!

I have the P3 as well, and have used this to evaluate the breakthrough from
28MHz, which I find to be between -45 and -50dB. With my HF vertical it
means that a number of 10m signals are audible as breakthrough, but barely
moving the meter.

If I had an efficient HF beam the situation would certainly not be
satisfactory.

Hi All
I was monitoring 144.370 today on the K3 with K144XV module installed when I
heard a SSB sideband signal at about S2. Also connected to the rig was a
Butternut HF6V for HF.
The signal turned out to be a strong station on 28.370 - the IF frequency.
Anyone else noticed breakthrough to 144 from the 28 IF ??

When running my K3 with my DB6NT/Kuhne transverter on 144MHz IF out is
set to 1mW. That's o.k. for both CW and DATA A (WSJT), when 1mW is good
for 25 W out at the TVTR. Thats perfect for my 2x GU74b amp.
But in SSB it's completely different. My Heil Pro Set (electret) is
working great but with mic gain set to 10 and compress to 20 ALC
shows 6 to 7 units, compress some 10 but there aint no 1mW out at the IF
out anymore. It's quite below, app. 0.5mW in the peak and thats good for
not more than 10 W out at the transverter.
I wonder why in SSB the IF out is much lower than in CW and DATA A mode.
More mic gain aint help of course.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong (probably?).

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV output power range

2011-08-09 Thread John Lemay
Stan

I missed your original post, so I'm appending to this one.

My K144XV can be controlled from about 2w to 9w. I would hazard a guess that
you may be overdriving and sending something into compression in an attempt to
get more power out.

It would also help if you could borrow another external meter to see if yours
has a problem.

Good luck

Hello Stan,

I got 1-9 watt output on my Kuranichi meter. I would suggest check the sitting
of the TMP cables. I once managed to deform the TMP socket by inserting the
cable incorrectly.

Since that time, I open up the top cover of the K144XV to check the cabling
whether I re-sit the K144XV into my K3 after dismantling. In other words, I do
all my cabling work with top cover opened and cover it after visual inspection.

主題︰ [Elecraft] K144XV output power range

My external watt meter does not agree with the power output bar graph display
on the K3 except in the very middle of the power range. While turning the
power control from 0.1 to 1.0 W., the bar graph shows the expected 1 to 10
display. But my watt meter display goes from about 5.8 to 7.5 W.

Does my watt meter really suck, or is this a behavior that others have seen?
The K144XV manual suggests that an upper value of 7.5 W is not unreasonable
given the accuracy of most meters. But 5.8 W for a minimum output power
seems way too high.

Anybody have numbers to compare?

Subject: [Elecraft] Transmit audio frequency shift on USB?

I'm having a ball with my newly assembled K3! I was on the air (USB,
14.170) this weekend trying to fine tune my audio equalization. Two
gentlemen told me I sounded great. However my audio was smoothest 30-50 Hz
above my operating frequency. They are both audiophiles. My RIT was OFF.
One based his opinion on critical listening. He said the audio was very
good at our mutual frequency but had a slight rasp to it. This went away
about 30 Hz higher. The second gentleman was using a FLEX 5000. He
indicated that my signal measured 50 Hz higher than our stated operating
frequency. He recorded my signal at both frequencies. It was clear that I
sounded best 50 Hz high.

I am using the TX ESSB option set at 3.0.

Do these observations make sense? If so, do I need to make an adjustment?
It was just the 2nd hour on the air with the new rig, so I'm not 100% sure
that my fine tuning was turned on to 3 digits past the decimal. But could
there be some other explanation?

Thanks and 73,

Re: [Elecraft] P3 RFI

2011-07-07 Thread John Lemay
Good morning all

I raised the issue of noise coming from my P3 several months ago.

It is noticeable on 2m, using an EME array that is about 50ft from the rig.
There is a combination of azimuth and elevation in which the array looks
directly at my shack and under those circumstances the noise level on 2m
rises several dB.

I was advised to put chokes on the cables at the P3 end, and to revisit the
cleaning of metal panels on the P3 where they meet. I've done this till I'm
blue in the face, but it doesn't help because the P3 radiates a small amount
of hash from the display screen. It's not practical to screen this !

Ed,

Listening on a TH-D72 on about 137MHz, yes the noise from the P3 is indeed
loud. However, by the time I have more than a metre or so separation
between the P3 and the handie, the noise drops below the handie's squelch
threshold, so for me at least, it's a very localised phenomenon.
The interference is also present on 2m, but would certainly be inaudible
with an antenna placed well outside of the shack.

Ok Roger - thanks for the input.
TX-DLY is an option I suppose but that means the sequencer will not be
sequencing in the right order. ( I dont know if that is an issue or not).
The sequencer has to switch the LNA first then switches the PA and K3 over
together to tx. TXDLY. If I use TXD then they will all have to go over
together and maybe there is a risk of RF getting to the LNA with the amp in
TX awaiting RF from the K3?

Agreed, the demand is not likely to be huge. But there is a growing list of
Countries with access to 4m.

Would the existing XV50 transverter lend itself to conversion without a

It would require a transverter, such as the K144XV. What I don't know
is whether there would be much demand for a 10-watt 70 MHz
transverter, especially given that it would occupy the same location
as the K144XV. Another possibility is a dual-band transverter.

I can't make any predictions on this right now.

Re: [Elecraft] K3V - another new product speculation

2011-04-09 Thread John Lemay
Serious ops go the transverter route because rigs such as the 847 and 2000
are a compromise, and in particular because their performance on the vhf /
uhf bands is not too good - poor dynamic range, reciprocal mixing issues
etc.

That is an extremely small market. There is a reason the rigs you mentioned
are no longer around. Serious ops go the transverter route.

I've always thought that Elecraft should come out with a VHF/UHF all
mode rig based on the K3.

Yes, I know about the outboard transverters but I'm talking about some
thing like the old Yaesu FT-736 or Icom IC-910 based on the K3.

I've never liked the FT-847 or TS-2000 approach of stuffing a radio with
DC to daylight. If something goes wrong with the rig you lose both HF
 and VHF/UHF.

Elecraft has all the parts sitting in stock. Use the guts of the
transverters and integrate them into a K3 sized box with the same DSP
and control boards. Getting 100W out on 2m/70cm will need a new PA
 design (50V???).

I guarantee it's more complicated than that and it's not something that
I'd want Elecraft to waste time doing if it means putting something K3
on the back burner. It all depends on if there's a market niche that
needs filling. I think there is but could be wrong.

S-Meter Lite software does a nice job with OLD Kenwood and Yaesu

Re: [Elecraft] PLL Control Voltage Range

2011-03-28 Thread John Lemay
Ken

I can only comment on my own K3 which does not have a second receiver.
Variations from 1.5 to 5v are entirely normal - you are observing the
voltage on the voltage controlled oscillator. You will see it change
gradually as you tune across a band, and then jump as you step to another
band (these are the bands covered by the VCO which are not the same as
amateur or broadcast bands).

Without a second rx, my PLL2 always shows 0.0. Common sense tells me that
PLL2 in your case should be similar but not necessarily the same.

Subject: [Elecraft] PLL Control Voltage Range

I have been having some flakey operation with the main receiver in SN 1292
recently which I believe I have cured for the moment by re-calibrating the
main VCO. As suggested in the manual, I have been observing the PLL control
voltages on the VFO B display. Depending on the band, it is varying from a
low of about 1.5 volts to about 5.1 volts. I also notice that there is
sometime a rather large difference between the PLL1 and PLL2 control
voltages (about 2 volts) on a given band, but not in all cases. These
voltages do not change much over several tens of KHz tuning on any given
band. Do these values and actions sound reasonable? I don't recall seeing
a table of acceptable PLL 1/2 control voltage ranges by band. Thanks for any
insight,

Ken, NU4I

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Noise from P3

2011-03-24 Thread John Lemay
Well, I have undertaken a lot of work to address this problem:-

1. taken apart the P3 and doubly made certain that contact between the
various chassis parts is good.

2. taken apart the K3 and paid particular attention to the contact areas
around the rear panel and IF output area.

3. placed ferrites at both ends of the DC lead to the P3.

4. used the P3 on a separate power supply.

5. placed ferrites on the IF lead between the P3 and K3.

The problem remains. In fact if anything it is a little worse this morning,
but these are not lab measurements.

So, Dxing on 2m with the P3 running is a non-starter for me.

Not if it is common mode current, coupled from signal common onto the V-

While it is written about audio interconnects, it applies directly here

While operating on SSB on 144.225 MHz using the internal K144VX
transverter I am getting broadband noise around that frequency when I
switch on my P3. The noise is quite strong, about S7, and shows clearly
on the P3 screen. If I move the P3 about six inches away from the K3 the
noise disappears. Removing the 2 metre antenna also removes the noise.

I would be grateful if anyone else with a K144XV and a P3 would check to
see if they get the same problem?

Many thanks

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Noise from P3

2011-03-23 Thread John Lemay
I've spent a bit more time investigating this noise, following my initial
response to David.

The noise sounds rather like a buzz saw. It is quite audible on the K3
speaker, it is strong enough to move the S meter, and it's visible on the
P3. There is not just one frequency, but the noise is every 19kHz (approx)
across the band.

The noise goes away if:-

1. I turn the P3 off
2. I remove the 2m antenna

The noise reduces if:-

1. I disconnect the BNC at the K3 IF Out connector.

I already have chokes on the DC lead to the P3.

I think at this stage I should also make it clear that I have a highly
sensitive 2m system with masthead preamplifier, and four eight element yagis
which are at present quite close to ground level.

That's entirely possible -- but it's also possible that the cables are
involved. Many RFI problems have more than one cause, or more than one
component, or a combination of causes, both of which must be present for
the RFI to happen. In this example, a hand or finger next to the
display allows RF to capacity-couple to the body, and the resulting RF
current radiates the noise. Take the fingers away, and if there's still
noise, another coupling mechanism may be present. On the other hand,
I've never felt the urge to have my fingers next to the P3 screen. :) I
don't operate 2M for weak signal work, because I'm blocked by a high
ridge to all of North America, so I can't comment on noise from my own
display. :)

I don't recall details of the P3 construction, nor the display, but the
display is a potential break in shielding, and even a potential RFI
source. Ideally, the display should be bonded to the shielding
enclosure and be constructed in a manner that there is no break in the
shielding, and any current driving the display should flow in a loop
with very small area to minimize any magnetic field.

I am pleased to report that putting a ferrite 'clamp-on' core at each
end of the 12V power lead has completely cured the problem. Because the
cable is quite thin, I managed to wind two turns round each core.

I wonder whether a screened power cable might have been an alternative
answer? Maybe I shall try that tomorrow.

Incidentally, before fitting the cores I did notice that placing a
finger near the screen did increase the noise.

  Mike,

That is creative and very nice, but a pair of high efficiency
(unamplified) speakers will beat that all hollow while allowing the
use of AFX. I use a pair of old RS Optimus speakers that I picked up at
a thrift shop for a bargain - they make the K3 sound sweet - YMMV.
IMHO, the internal speaker sucks, and is to be used only when there
are no other alternatives.

 Hi Georges,
Like you I cannot fathom why the K144XV is so low in it's received signal
strength, I too see no better than S3-S4 on signals that on all other radios
are S9-S9+.
I (and others) have asked Elecraft about the discrepancy but as yet the
low S meter reading issue remains unfixed.
It used to read a little high when compared to other rigs and firmware
version 3.97 made it read quite accurately.

which makes feeding it easier, but does not change the ability of the
 antenna to radiate.

15 minutes spent with any antenna modeling software will show that
whether

At risk of pointing out the obvious, with a short(ish) vertical you'll
probably need to receive with the pre-amp switched on, and the attenuator
switched off, on most bands.

Even with, (quite literally) a screwdriver poked into the antenna socket,
you should hear a good number of signals - and probably a lot of hash and
qrm from local sources such as computers.

Given the paucity of received signals, I don't think transmitting is a
particularly good idea !

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 not recieving

At the risk of exposing what a n00b I am when it comes to HF, I really
need some help. I recently (last month) purchased a K3. First HF
radio I have owned. I got my license 2 years ago and have spent most
of the time since playing with VHF. I have been trying to teach
myself CW and decided that it was time to step into the HF waters. I
studied, ogled, and dreamed of my ideal HF transceiver. I finally
found the K3 and having looked (at least a cursory glance) at all the
others, I was sold. I saved my pennies and purchased. I also got
myself a 43' untuned vertical antenna, balun, and radial wires.

My setup: K3/100 has 100 feet of low loss 400 coax out to the 43 foot
vertical on the hill in my back yard. It has 8 25 foot radials and a
4:1 balun. The K3 has the KATU3, KPA3, KTCXO3-1, KFL3A-400, and
default 2.8KHz filters. I assembled it and did followed the
calibration instructions as well as I could. I think I got
everything, but obviously I missed something. Or maybe I just need an
elmer to tell me what to do.

I cannot seem to find any signals that make the S meter go above a 3
or 4. I have the RF gain turned up a fair ways (mostly to the top),
and I can hear static. As I tune up some of the bands on SSB, I can
hear a tone that changes higher in pitch as I tune up in frequency. I
have tried listening for CW, but I am hearing nothing as I scan
through the bands. I had a 10m horizontal dipole taped to my wall for
a while until I found time to run the coax out to the back yard. I
had hoped that since it was resonant on the 10m band, maybe it would
be able to pick up something, but it was no better (or worse) than my
vertical.

As far as I can tell, the radio seems to transmit. I can see the
power meter moving and the SWR meter moving. The ATU seems to be able
to find acceptable settings on most of the bands with the vertical.
But I can't hear them. You can't work them if you can't hear them,
right?

This is a desperate plea for help. Is it the radio or me? Please
have pity on the n00b and walk me through my first HF contact.

Re: [Elecraft] BNC adapter question

I think the idea of a couple of short cables is better. It gives you
flexibility of where to put the PR6, and I'll be putting mine under the rig
(just far enough forward that the rig still sits on its feet).

Using right angle connectors might make access to some of the other rear
sockets impossible.

Re: [Elecraft] Love/Hate your K3

Hi Stewart

TMP connectors can easily be made up with nothing more than a soldering iron
(for the centre pin) and pliers (for the outer). It's a one-way trip -
they're not designed to be undone.

If you have an intermittent I think it's a fair bet that one of the pins
looks like it is soldered but the solder may not have taken to the inner
conductor.

However, I don't know of a UK source for TMP, and if anyone does, I'd be
very interested to know !

Three hours into cqww the output power on my K3 started fluctuating wildly
and then went to zero. It happened last week too but recovered but this time
it looked final; after significant preparations for the contest and in the
middle of a freezing night I wasn't a happy person.

I'd sort of resigned myself to waiting a few hours and then driving 35 miles
to hopefully borrow a K3 from a friend who wouldn't be doing the contest;
first though I'd quickly check the reflector and to my delight up popped a
message describing this very fault, caused by the TMP cable coming loose
from the J7 connector on the KREF3 board (thanks N3CAQ..!). Off came the lid
to reveal a well seated cable but a nudge on J7 with a pen brought the rf
back to life! Mightily relieved I carried on and things were fine for a
couple of hours until the same thing happened; this time I removed the 2nd
receiver and took out the cable to test it and sure enough the meter across
the centre pins showed intermittent continuitygently flexing the cable
caused the connection to come and go.

Interested to speculate how long the cable has been faulty; this ancient
model (#145) has definitely showed power fluctuations in the past on
occasion but I've assumed a software source (can't explain it..? must be
software..!) so maybe it's been like it from new, don't know. The good news
was I remembered having a spare new TMP cable left over from the KRX3
fitting which I used and all was then back to normality. This now begs the
question of getting replacement TMP cables which I will pose to Aptos since
I assume they are custom made and I can't imagine a non-specialised crimping
tool doing the job.

Moral of this tale is check the reflector first, and watch your connections;
the few problems I've had over the years (including random error messages)
have all been traced to less than perfect contacts of one sort or another.

CQWW was excellent though I am considering claiming for an hours worth of
points from Aptos ;-) Thanks to all those calls familiar from here for the
Qs on 40m - I was sosb low power.

Greetings Fellow Elecrafters,

With great anticipation I finally got around to assembling my P3 (SN 211)
last weekend. Assembly went great and power on tests were encouraging.

Unfortunately, it fails to display any output from the IF output port on my
K3. Nothing. Every function seems to work just fine except that S9 signals
on 30m (freq displayed OK) do not show anything on the display.

So, I first thought that maybe I had a bad interconnect cable so tried
another ... nothing.

Moved the frequency knob of the K3 around ... frequency display tracks the
VFO.

Tried every function on the P3 ... everything appears to work fine.

I have not made the +10dB mod to my transverter board nor have I upgraded
the firmware in the P3 from factory (0.28).

I am now wondering if I have a busted IF output or (sigh) a faulty P3??

Suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further please?

How can I tell the K3 which of two 2m-transverters (XV1: K144XV-internal and

When I enable both transverters in CONFIG (XV1 ON = YES and XV2 ON = YES)
the K3 will always adress XV2 and does not leave me a chance to choose which
transverter to use with either RX input. This would be useful for diversity
reception with XV1 connected to the MAIN rx and XV2 conntected to the SUB

Has anybody succeeded to use two separate 2m Transverters with both RX paths
for diversity reception - and how?
Any suggestions welcome!

Re: [Elecraft] Import to the UK

2010-08-18 Thread John Lemay
Hi Simon

Just to confirm: you'll pay a Parcel Force handling charge and then VAT on
the total value. There should be no import taxes.

If you have a dispute, it's easier to pay and argue afterwards, otherwise
you won't get you nice new rig until it's all settled.

Your letter from Parcel Force will give you options about how to pay
(on-line, in person at depot etc), and there should be an option to collect
your rig from the depot.

Good luck

Hi All,

K3/100 ordered and in the UK according to USPS:

Shipment ActivityLocation Date Time

Into Foreign Customs GREAT BRITAIN 08/17/10
11:00am

Yay!

I understand that Parcel Force will write to me so I can pay their
charge and the slice for our government.

My Questions:

Is there a difference between Import Duty and VAT

Am I liable for both?

Any tips as to how to make sure that Parcel Force get it here?

Fingers are crossed...

Yes, I get this artefact. It's been evident ever since I got my K3. You will
notice that it is made worse by excessive mic gain or compression.

I hope it is an artifact in the monitor circuit, and not on the transmitted
signal !

Hi

Just noticed this when playing around with the K3's monitor.

With the Gate off
EQ flat
MH2 hand MIC
TX test mode
Band 7mhz

While whistling there is a odd artifact. If I whistle I get a sound that
sounds like a oscillator pulling in a receiver. I dont get any odd sounds
with normal voice testing

.With a continuous whistle I get this artifact that is a mirror of the
whistle, however it seems to shift frequency or pull the louder you
whistle. It might be a IMD product? I have never noticed this before in the
K3's monitor. I will also check the clubs K3's and report back.

Anyone else get this?

John

Re: [Elecraft] Adding options later for the K3

2010-03-24 Thread John Lemay
Mike

It's refreshing to hear from someone who is not considering buying the 100w
kit with almost every single option on day one !

Building the basic kit will give you a first class rig at a very competitive
price and will give you the confidence to go back inside and add options
when you need them. It might be wise to save up and buy and install more
than one option at a time, just to save repeatedly opening up the covers,
but that is all.

The basic kit you refer to comes with DSP IF filtering, and a 2.7K roofing
filter, so you needn't order any other filters, unless you're interested in
AM/FM, or you're a confirmed CW addict. Filters are one of the easiest
options to fit.

There's just a small snag with new options (such as the 2m module) - when
they're first released, there can be a backlog, and experience shows us that
release dates tend to move forward too !

I am looking to get a K3 kit. Just the basic 10watt kit, the ATU and maybe
a Filter.

I would assume that the hardest part, would be the original build. Is it?
As time and cash becomes available, I will add to it. Is it all easy to add
later, or is there some option, because of complexity, that I should install
at the beginning?

It will be replacing a Kenwood TS-570, so don't need to start with a lot of
options to see a big difference. I'm planing on using a Heil Goldline
microphone, that I was using with the TS-570.

I just joined the list here, yesterday.

My last attempt didn't make it through, hopefully this one will.

Hi all,
As I understand it, the only input path to the K144XV is it's
dedicated ANT 3 BNC connector, it cannot receive signals through the
ATU. The only way the sub receiver can listen to it is if it is sharing
the main receiver's antenna connection and hearing the 28MHz IF through
the KXV3A. Otherwise 2 K144XVs would be required. The sub receiver can
be set to MAIN to share the main receiver's signal or AUX which
depending on how it was hooked up when installed will either be the
non-transmitting jack on the ATU (CONFIG:KRX3 set to ANT=ATU) or the AUX
RF BNC connector on the rear panel (CONFIG:KRX3 set to ANT=BNC), neither
of which will hear the K144XV. With the sub turned on go into BSET and
tap ANT to change it's antenna to MAIN. Holding RX ANT will also
change the sub's antenna when not in BSET. Thus, 2M diversity reception
is not possible with the K144XV. I have the sub RX but don't have the
K144XV yet (it should arrive any day), so I could be missing something,
but I have been studying the manuals in preparation. I'm sure someone
will correct me if I'm wrong. Hope that helps.

IMHO an external sequencer is still the best way to have a foolproof
system. Running QRO with a mast mounted lna isn't a good idea if you
don't have one. 20 ms is not enough for sure, as most of the QRO coax
relays have a switching time of that amount or even more
My sequence timing is around 250 ms, in four steps, including LNA, PA,
Driver, and RTX/XVTR.

I am still worried about the diode switching, 2m specific PTT outputs and

the other bands. This is not quite long enough when you are sequencing an
amplifier and a pre-amp as there is more to switch than just the coaxial
 relays.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 Receiver Noise Level -- Evaluation and Adjustment

2009-12-20 Thread John Lemay
Hello Sverre

Thanks for putting your spectral analysis on the web page. It's very
interesting and I decided to do my own test. I used Spectrum Laboratory, but
it displays similar information to Spectran.

I have deviated from white or pink noise, because most of the time we are
listening to real signals (or qrm!). I decided to inject a signal: I used my
K3 and XG1 to perform the test. The line out from the K3 was connected to
line in on my PC.

With reference to a fundamental audio signal at 0db, a third harmonic of
this was observed at about -40, and a fifth harmonic at around -50dB. The
even order harmonics are well down in comparison.

I don't know if this is a good result or bad. But it's clear to me that if I
am listening to a 700Hz CW note, no amount of audio roll-off at 4kHz or so
is going to change the relative levels of those first few harmonics.

Just for fun, I ran the same test using an FT-847. The results were very
different. Firstly, harmonics were down at -55 or better. Secondly, the even
order products (2nd and 4th) were louder than the odd ones. And lastly, the
FT-847 graph showed several close-in spurious alongside each harmonic, which
had been completely absent with the K3.

I hope this all makes sense. And apologies if my use of technical terms is
not spot-on. I'm just an amateur, with no training in electronics or radio !

Concerning the last few days' discussion of noise and artifacts, here is a
spectral analysis plot of my K3's output:
http://www.qslnet.de/member/la3za/bilder/K3-CW-spectran.jpg

First it shows the signal related artifacts in the 10-13 kHz range as
mentioned by Wayne N6KR below. It also shows line noise at approximately
every kHz (harmonics of 1.025-1.030 kHz). The highest of these is at approx
2050 kHz and is at about -40 dB relative to the main signal, i.e. at a level
of about 10^(-40/20) = 0.01 or 1%. Thus these lines could be audible and be
part of the explanation for the complaints about the K3's sound. Apart from
the lines, the background is down to -60 dB above 2-3 kHz.

It is interesting to note that my spectran plot has discrete line noise as
opposed to that of G4ILO in his blog from today
(http://www.g4ilo.com/blog.html), plot here:
http://www.g4ilo.com/uploaded_images/k3freqresponse-736797.gif . His
background noise level is similar to mine.

Could this be due to differences in individual K3's as has been hinted to on
this list?

My setup is:
K3 with PRE on at 14.102 MHz, RF gain at max,
CW with 400 Hz roofing filter and bandwidth set to 400 Hz,
AGC-F on and with AGC parameters SLP=9, THR=3,
I use a lot of averaging in Spectran to make the lines more visible as seen
from the setup info in my plot

Where did you make your measurements? There are significant

down to -60 dB above 2-3 kHz.

It is interesting to note that my spectran plot has discrete
line noise as opposed to that of G4ILO in his blog from today
 (http://www.g4ilo.com/blog.html), plot here:
 http://www.g4ilo.com/uploaded_images/k3freqresponse-736797.gif
. His background noise level is similar to mine.

Could this be due to differences in individual K3's as has
been hinted to on this list?

 My setup is:
K3 with PRE on at 14.102 MHz, RF gain at max,
CW with 400 Hz roofing filter and bandwidth set to 400 Hz,
AGC-F on and with AGC parameters SLP=9, THR=3, I use a lot of
averaging in Spectran to make the lines more visible as seen
from the setup info in my plot

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV or XV144 transverter?

2009-12-08 Thread John Lemay
David

The secret with these RA Mitsubishi modules is getting the heat away, and
they're not very efficient at all. The earlier M series were a little better
(I notice that's what shows on Elecraft's web site pictures but no doubt
they have had to upgrade when stocks ran out).

Looks like the internal transverter runs discrete components ? Can't quite
see enough in the pictures to be sure.

The Mitsubishi RA30H1317M module used in the XV144 is supposedly rated
at 30W at 135-175MHz. Having said that my XV144 seems to trip out if I
run it more than about 5W on FM.

One more thing, XV144 is supposed to work at 10 watt if under full duty

Re: [Elecraft] K3 used prices - UK

2009-09-21 Thread John Lemay
I think that part of Julian's original mail has so far gone unanswered -
that is the question of valuing used Elecraft K3 series equipment. There
hasn't been much for sale recently so there is little to go on. My starting
point, I think, would be around 2/3rds of the price you paid. Of course,
this might be complicated by the varying exchange rate and occasional price
increases.

sorry did forget, that the list doesn?t accept html-mails ...
Here is my wish again

Within WAE CW one week ago we did record all QTCs to MP3
just to be able to relisten to them if something went wrong

The line output of the K3 is the ideal port to do so.
Unfortunately there is a small issue when pressing a button
on the front panel. The beep is much louder on the
recoring than the recorded signals.

Isn?t it possible to disable these keyboard beeps for the line-out jack???
Or is the only possiblity to disable them at all?

2009-08-15 Thread John Lemay

There's one more parameter to check: AF LIM

If you set this to small numbers (say 1 to 5) you will get almost no audio
with AGC OFF.

Hope it's as simple as that ?

Strange operation here... AGC-S seems to work as it should and AGC-F as
expected but if I turn AGC off my rig does silent. I'm still able to
see the S-meter swinging to the signal that I was listening to.

Current settings are as follows:
AGC Decay = Soft
AGC Hold = 0.00
AGC Pulse = Normal
AGC Slope = 10
AGC Threshold = 7
AGC-F = 120
AGC-S = 20

I've made a few changes to this setup and I'm unable to get a sound out
with AGC off.

I've performed the SPI clock mod and the extreme signal protection mods.

I've tested with both AF and RF gains maxed and the output it still
silent. I've also fully swiped the range several times to rule out a
dirty pot.

Can anyone else reporduce this with 3.25?

[Elecraft] K3 VFO Tuning noise reduction

2009-08-14 Thread John Lemay
Hello all

Has anyone carried out the VFO tuning noise reduction modification yet ?

The photo is a little unclear (or maybe it's my eyes) - it looks as though
one resistor-diode combination has the anode connected to the resistor and
the other pair has the cathode connected to the resistor. Have I got this
right ?

Perhaps the folks at Aptos read this reflector .

Thanks
