Re: [Elecraft] K3 Sub Receiver
Ken Thanks for replying quickly. I am reading the current (D10 version) manual, but on looking at your reply I decided to check out the errata - and there it is :- < Pg. 14 (VFO Tuning Controls): Holding SUB now turns diversity receive on/off. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Pigremote availability
Tim Hope you make a full and speedy recovery. It is your aerial which radiates your transmitted signal - therefore operating the radio from a different room is unlikely to help you, it might even put you in a higher RF field. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Sub receiver
Bill, Joe and Fred Thanks for your quick replies. It certainly WAS the correct question to ask. Fred has put his finger on the problem; my Windows settings had defaulted to single channel audio. My question turns into "how do I get Spectran to look at the other channel" but that's not an Elecraft question. Why am I interested in the audio from the second receiver ? This goes back to a problem with my K3 which on 28MHz has a large number of receiver birdies - I posted about this a couple of weeks ago. The situation has been improved by tightening all the panel screws absolutely as hard as I can. I'm no weakling but it seems that I was being a bit too cautious. But some birdies remain, and I noticed that they are at different levels and different frequencies on the sub. So I was making a careful check and listing the frequencies and signal level, using Spectran. But so far, only on the main rx. Hence my question. The no pa pa message comes up as expected, and the current indicated on the k2 display is less than 400 ma. The keys are in the correct places on the ribbon cable. Nothing has ever been plugged into the DB9 port, so this is not the issue where a standard serial cable damages the kpa100 through the aux port non-standard wiring. The K2 appears to work fine with the partially built KPA100 disconnected. Voltages on D9 of the K2 RF board (my proxy for V RFDET) are much lower than 17 volts (kpa100 not connected) so the high voltage appears to come from the KPA100, not the K2. I have the KSB2 installed, but haven't explored that its voltages, and haven't tested whether it still works following the 17 volt incident. I don't see any obvious solder bridges on the KPA100. I think it is only fair that I grab one more email in order to put right my earlier comments. I have opened up my weather station on the bench; dismantling it as far as I dare. I could not see any problems and all the electronics is potted against ingress so fault finding is near impossible. I put it back together, and now it works ! So, I'm not sure why it failed and I suppose it might happen again, but I'm very relieved to have it operational once more. Re: [Elecraft] Would anyone like to see an all-mode VHF/UHFoffering from Elecraft?
Ed and all Don't forget that the situation in Europe is somewhat different. In 6m and 2m IARU Region 1 contests there is the potential for 600 to 800 contacts in a 24 hour period. On 70cms it's around 250 QSO's for the leading groups. And in the UK we have VHF evening activity contests where almost 200 Q's can be made in 2-1/2 hours. So, point number 1 is that activity is higher and therefore the potential sale of VHF rigs is different. Point 1 leads to Point 2: This level of activity brings with it a very demanding requirement on the receiver, to provide sensitivity for the smallest of signals, and good selectivity and extreme dynamic range to cope with your near neighbours. Elecraft know how to deal with big signals. The reason I would support Elecraft going the VHF route is because the performance of the current shack in the box multimode, multiband rigs is woefully inadequate in the criteria listed in my previous paragraph. Ted, You really expected a VHF contest to sound like Field day on the HF bands? That tells me that you do not regularly operate VHF-ssb. I have been pleading with the FM repeater HT hams for years to explore the fun of VHF-ssb/cw/digital modes with multi types of propagation and the response is they don't have the time, the cash, the know-how, the property that allows antennas, etc. etc. There is plenty VHF multi-mode radios available plus a wide assortment of transverters, plus very economical surplus multi-modes from past years. Radio supply is not the problem. With the exception of 2m-eme using digital modes there is just not much interest by the usual VHF users and especially new hams. Satellite use has dwindled due to lack of cheap launch capability so new satellites are essentially orbiting repeaters for the most part. A radio with the capabilities you request will be in the $3000 class (If not more). A K3/10 + transverters will accomplish this if you want Elecraft equipment at less than that (I think). Or one could buy the KX3 and add the 2M module when it comes out. Then add transverters for 222, 432, 1296. In 2012, I sold my FT-847 to purchase a 222-28 and 432-28 transverter to go with my K3/10 which I already had 144-28 and 1296-28 transverters. The K3 + transverters make a way superior combo than any multi-mode VHF/UHF that I have seen. I am QRV from 600m to 3cm! 73, Ed - KL7UW PS: I worked three stations in the Jan. VHF Contest! Listening in the monitor, there is a rushing sound with clicking (like fans in the background or something with a superimposed woodpecker). Clearly that spurious noise is what was tripping the vox off/on. Next removing the mike plug, the rushing sound was still there. With no mike input where is it coming from? Unlikely to be RFI since it is there at 1 watt. Setting the mike gain to zero and compression doesn't fix it. Compression level does substantial increase or decrease it. Re: [Elecraft] Serial Connection for K2
I similarly spent ages hunting down noise from my PC and associated cables. There are USB leads available which have a transparent outer sheath, which show off the silver plated screen. I thought this was just a gimmick, but it turns out they were quite effective. Remember you'll probably need ferrites on both ends of the run with a minimum of one turn through each ferrite. For many purposes, just clipping a choke on the cable is not effective - depending on your frequency of interest and the level of noise. Good luck ! Note that this is usually referred to as a 'converter' rather than an 'adapter' - it is often used in commercial environments and is quite robust - those termed 'adapter' are usually intended for the consumer market, and the relative price indicates that fact. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Roofing filters
Ivan You'll get as many different views here as there are combinations of different filters ! Roofing filters are quite easy to add at a later date (ease depends somewhat on the options installed), so my suggestion is to go lightly at first and see how you get on with just a couple of filters, and rely on the DSP for filtering - which is pretty good. For SSB, consider either 2.4 or 2.1kHz. Anything narrower is obviously more effective, but also tiring to listen to for long periods. For CW I think the choice is easy - head for the 500Hz filter. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Mutek Transverter combo?
Peter I have the internal 2m transverter for the K3, and the facility to use an external one instead - so, yes, it can be done. Here's my settings from the CONFIG menu: XV1 ON = yes XV1 RF = 144 XV1 IF = 28 XV1 PWR = L1.50 XV1 OFS = -0.61 XV1 ADR = Int Trn0 XV2 ON = yes XV2 RF = 144 XV2 IF = 28 XV2 PWR = L1.50 XV2 OFS = 0 XV2 ADR = Trn1 Some of these settings will be unique (such as offset) but most will be appropriate. The effect of these settings is that cycling up through the bands from 50MHz gives me first the internal transverter (XVTR1 is displayed briefly in the VFO B area) and then the external transverter ( when XVTR2 is briefly displayed). You can't quite do A/B comparisons with this unless you arrange relay switching of your 2m antenna at the same time as switching internal to external transverter. Re: [Elecraft] XV144 drops power if PWR is moved during xmit inUSB mode
Bob I can't bring to mind any user setting which would cause this issue. However, before getting out your sledgehammer, I suggest you run through the TX Gain Calibration routine, which is in the manual - pay particular attention to the Milliwatt Calibration because this is the power level used to drive the transverter. I'm not 100% convinced this will help, because you say that the 432MHz transverter behaves fine. Given your earlier mentioned problem with the 144MHz transverter tx frequency, it looks like the transverter has an obscure problem best directed to the experts - Elecraft Inc. One last suggestion, are you getting these results with amplifier and aerials attached - possibly you have an issue with RF getting into your power supply. If you can, see if the results of your test change when you use a dummy load. Re: [Elecraft] XV144 transmits 5kHz low
Bob For some reason I have not received your original mail, so excuse my piggy back on Don's reply. Firstly, 5kHz is a long way off ! If people called me 5kHz away, I probably would not hear them at all. Secondly, as Don says, the way the transverter works, with just the same one oscillator running for tx or rx, it is pretty much guaranteed not to shift between receive and transmit. So my guess is that you may have accidentally engaged the RIT or more likely the XIT, or perhaps the split frequency option. Everything you would do on 28MHz, your baseband for transverting, is faithfully reproduced on 144MHz. Its local oscillator is running on the same frequency during receive and transmit. I would check the K3 28 MHz output to see if the same thing occurs. A guess -- It could be a mode thing. If the others are operating with CW in SSB, your K3 should be set similarly. The default for the K3 is for CW to be LSB - if others are operating with CW in USB, that could account for a difference if you are changing modes on the K3. The offset setting on the K3 is to account for any difference between the actual frequency and the K3 transverter band reading, and is applied to both transmit and receive. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/23/2013 10:08 AM, kd...@denstarfarm.us wrote: Howdy K3' people: Made a few contacts on 2m now, SSB CW. Re: [Elecraft] P3 generates noise on 144 MHz
Roger About a year ago when I was using my K3, K144XV and P3 combination I went through most of the suggestions you have received . The noise floor was reduced to almost satisfactory levels, but not quite. Two further things occur to me: The DC cable to the P3 is just over a quarter wave long on 2m, so making it a different length could help. Secondly, I'm considering using a shielded cable (some cheap thin coax would be OK because the current consumed by the P3 is low). Regards John G4ZTR _ From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Roger Crofts Sent: 12 February 2013 00:10 To: elecraft reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] P3 generates noise on 144 MHz Thanks to everyone who responded. With your help, I have already reduced the noise level from S9+5db down to S6. The receiver noise floor is S3, so I still have a little way to go. There is now no doubt that the P3 power cord is responsible for most of the noise radiation. Putting the ferrite clamp-ons on the power cord as suggested by David, G4DMP, had the biggest effect. I also obtained a small improvement by removing some accessories that were sharing the 12V switched output from the K3. I am using the power cord supplied with the P3, but I had a splitter at the K3 end to feed power to a keyer and pre-amp. The extra cables for these devices were acting as additional antenna wires to radiate the 144MHz noise. However it seems to me that the noise should not be getting onto the P3 power cable in the first place. I looked at the P3 circuit diagram and was surprised to see that there is no series inductor in the power lead as it enters the box. Every other DC (or AF) connectio n I could find in the K3/P3 was protected by a series inductor and usually multiple bypass capacitors. There is a single bypass capacitor in the P3 power line. It is C500 with a value of 100nF. It seems to me that the effectiveness of this bypass capacitor very much depends upon a very good and direct connection between the I/O board printed circuit and the case. This connection relies on the 4 screws associated with the two 9pin D connectors. On re-reading the construction manual, I notice there is an instruction at the top of page 41, to check the surface of the metal work which mates with these connectors. At the time of construction I only gave this a cursory glance. I may have been remiss here. I will polish this surface with emery cloth and see if it makes any difference. I also tried powering the P3 from another 12Volt power supply, but the noise remained at S6. If I stretched the power cord in a certain direction the noise could be made to drop to the receiver noise floor (S3). I guess that this is because the power cord antenna has a null towards my 2 meter antenna in this particular arrangement. This is a solution, but not a very good one! I will continue my experiments and let you know how they go. I have a couple questions for you. I have browsed the archives and I was not seeing anything that was helping. This is a new K3 to me, the guy before was primarily a CW operator. He did not even own a mic. So I decided to buy the Yamaha CM500 headset and was trying to get it all setup this evening. Below is some of the things I have tried. In short, I am looking for the settings you have found to work. I am following the Fred Cady guide that I bought online. I am in the setting up SSB section. I was in test mode. When I was not in test mode I could get the TX light to come on via the PTT foot pedal, the XMIT button and never VOX. I never heard myself in test mode even when messing around with the Monitor, Compression, MicGain, VOX Gain and the VOX Interrupt, Mic+Line (off). I am using the Front Panel, Low, Heil adapter. I tried the headphones/mic on the computer, they sound great and the mic picks up very well. So, with VOX not going off at all. I suspect the mic connection is not getting to the radio. My headphones came with 1/8 to 1/4 adapters. 1 stereo and 1 mono. the mic on the headset is 1/8 and goes directly into the adapter along with the 1/4 PTT pedal. I then have the stereo 1/8 to 1/4 for the audio and that is plugged into the front. I also wasn't sure what to connect it to on the back since there are warning messages near the stereo connectors on the back. I was afraid to mess with anything there. Is it a bias issue? A connector issue? Software setting? Thanks in advance for any assistance. Re: [Elecraft] Monitor (OT)
I think it's more important to consider the proximity of the monitor to the aerial, rather than the amplifier. With a bit of luck, it's the aerial doing the transmitting and receiving, not the amplifier. This brings several variables into the equation, such as aerial gain and direction (if any), height and distance from the shack. Add to that short list; power levels, receive sensitivity, frequency in use and background noise levels These variables will no doubt ensure a host of different answers for similar monitors ! Further to my mail yesterday, I am now able to confirm that my system is running with TX INHibit in use. Primary control between RX and TX is achieved with a footswitch controlling my sequencer. [Elecraft] K3 TX Inhibit
Hello I have a question about the TX INHibit function of the K3. I want to use this with an external sequencer to ensure that my rig, amplifier and masthead preamplifier (on 2m) are controlled in a safe manner, and that even pressing the XMIT button or turning on VOX does not lead to a mishap. However, TX INHibit does not work as I expected:- I have turned on TX INH with LO = INH. I have plugged a lead into the 15 pin accessory socket so that pin 7 can be held low (in my test case, connected to earth). That works fine and TX is inhibited (indicated by the flashing TX icon). When I remove the earth connection from pin 7 the rig remains with TX inhibited - that's the bit I don't understand. Pete I confirm it's normal and common with most rigs. But if you don't like the background noise on FM you can use the squelch control to cut it out. Careful setting of the squelch will ensure no background noise but as soon as a weak station is received it will break the squelch and you will hear it. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 audio muffled?
Chuck I agree with Joe's diagnosis. Try an experiment:- Run 100w from the K3 alone and get a report. Then turn back the power so that K3 plus amplifier is producing 100w. See if the report is now OK, or muffled. If the report is OK, it could be RF feedback which only occurs at high power. If the report is muffled you might have an amplifier problem. Some of the guys think it sounds just fine, and some say they can hear a slight muffled sound with the KPA turned on. The point of comparing it to K3 only and K3 with KPA500 is that the mic is not in the equation. The report is clearly that the amp sounds muffled. Not unreadable, just slightly muffled. I have a bias current of 0.4A...about the only thing I can think of to check. I think there was some discussion of setting the bias current here, but I can't find it again. What is the range of bias current for best linearity? The levels are -40dB, -60dB, -80dB on the HF side and -50dB, -60dB,-80dB on the LF side. All levels are referred to the wanted signal and are my best guesstimate from the P3 display. This is only on 144MHz and does not manifest itself on any other band. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and JT65-HF
You will also need a means of making the K3 go into transmit. A work-around would be to use VOX. John G4ZTR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Don Wilhelm Sent: 18 October 2011 22:22 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 and JT65-HF Chuck, It is almost that simple. If you have a desktop PC, is that simple, but you connect the K3 line out to the soundcard line-in and the K3 line in to the soundcard line out. The levels should be within the range of adjustment using the K3 controls as well as the soundcard volume cotrols on the computer. With a laptop, controlling the levels may be more complicated, and may require some resistive dividers to work properly. For instance, the laptop headphone output may be greater than what is normally considered line level - although if the computer is expecting powered speakers, that one *may* be OK. If you have a line out jack from the computer, use that instead of the headphone output. Connecting the K3 line out to the laptop Mic In, may prove to be troublesome, although some laptops have a software setting that allows either line level or mic level using the same jacks - if that is your case, set it for line level. If your computer is stuck with only mic level input, you may have to reduce the K3 line out signal level by about a factor of 10. A 10k resistor in series with the K3 output line plus a 1k resistor on the computer side of the 10k resistor from the AF line to the AF return (usually the shield). Place that voltage divider close to the computer end to keep noise pickup on that signal line to a minimum. Remember that the audio input level to the K3 is adjusted differently than the traditional wisdom for other transceivers - use TX TEST to set your input level (no RF will be transmitted), use DATA A submode, and adjust the Line In level in the K3 (and/or the output volume and WAV level in the computer) so the ALC meter illuminates the 4th bar with the 5th bar barely blinking. The K3 ALC action does not begin until the audio level hits the 5th bar. Good luck with your connections and with JT65. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/18/2011 2:21 PM, Charles Eklund wrote: I'm a new K3 user and love it. Re: [Elecraft] P3 RFI
Good morning all I raised the issue of noise coming from my P3 several months ago. It is noticeable on 2m, using an EME array that is about 50ft from the rig. There is a combination of azimuth and elevation in which the array looks directly at my shack and under those circumstances the noise level on 2m rises several dB. I was advised to put chokes on the cables at the P3 end, and to revisit the cleaning of metal panels on the P3 where they meet. I've done this till I'm blue in the face, but it doesn't help because the P3 radiates a small amount of hash from the display screen. It's not practical to screen this ! Re: [Elecraft] PLL Control Voltage Range
Ken I can only comment on my own K3 which does not have a second receiver. Variations from 1.5 to 5v are entirely normal - you are observing the voltage on the voltage controlled oscillator. You will see it change gradually as you tune across a band, and then jump as you step to another band (these are the bands covered by the VCO which are not the same as amateur or broadcast bands). Without a second rx, my PLL2 always shows 0.0. Common sense tells me that PLL2 in your case should be similar but not necessarily the same. As suggested in the manual, I have been observing the PLL control voltages on the VFO B display. Depending on the band, it is varying from a low of about 1.5 volts to about 5.1 volts. I also notice that there is sometime a rather large difference between the PLL1 and PLL2 control voltages (about 2 volts) on a given band, but not in all cases. These voltages do not change much over several tens of KHz tuning on any given band. Do these values and actions sound reasonable? I don't recall seeing a table of acceptable PLL 1/2 control voltage ranges by band. Well, I have undertaken a lot of work to address this problem:- 1. taken apart the P3 and doubly made certain that contact between the various chassis parts is good. 2. taken apart the K3 and paid particular attention to the contact areas around the rear panel and IF output area. 3. placed ferrites at both ends of the DC lead to the P3. 4. used the P3 on a separate power supply. 5. placed ferrites on the IF lead between the P3 and K3. The problem remains. In fact if anything it is a little worse this morning, but these are not lab measurements. So, Dxing on 2m with the P3 running is a non-starter for me. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Noise from P3
I've spent a bit more time investigating this noise, following my initial response to David. The noise sounds rather like a buzz saw. It is quite audible on the K3 speaker, it is strong enough to move the S meter, and it's visible on the P3. There is not just one frequency, but the noise is every 19kHz (approx) across the band. The noise goes away if:- 1. I turn the P3 off 2. I remove the 2m antenna The noise reduces if:- 1. I disconnect the BNC at the K3 IF Out connector. I already have chokes on the DC lead to the P3. I think at this stage I should also make it clear that I have a highly sensitive 2m system with masthead preamplifier, and four eight element yagis which are at present quite close to ground level. That's entirely possible -- but it's also possible that the cables are involved. Many RFI problems have more than one cause, or more than one component, or a combination of causes, both of which must be present for the RFI to happen. In this example, a hand or finger next to the display allows RF to capacity-couple to the body, and the resulting RF current radiates the noise. Take the fingers away, and if there's still noise, another coupling mechanism may be present. On the other hand, I've never felt the urge to have my fingers next to the P3 screen. :) I don't operate 2M for weak signal work, because I'm blocked by a high ridge to all of North America, so I can't comment on noise from my own display. :) I don't recall details of the P3 construction, nor the display, but the display is a potential break in shielding, and even a potential RFI source. Re: [Elecraft] K3 not recieving
Vernon At risk of pointing out the obvious, with a short(ish) vertical you'll probably need to receive with the pre-amp switched on, and the attenuator switched off, on most bands. Even with, (quite literally) a screwdriver poked into the antenna socket, you should hear a good number of signals - and probably a lot of hash and qrm from local sources such as computers. Given the paucity of received signals, I don't think transmitting is a particularly good idea ! I recently (last month) purchased a K3. First HF radio I have owned. I got my license 2 years ago and have spent most of the time since playing with VHF. I have been trying to teach myself CW and decided that it was time to step into the HF waters. I studied, ogled, and dreamed of my ideal HF transceiver. I finally found the K3 and having looked (at least a cursory glance) at all the others, I was sold. I saved my pennies and purchased. I also got myself a 43' untuned vertical antenna, balun, and radial wires. My setup: K3/100 has 100 feet of low loss 400 coax out to the 43 foot vertical on the hill in my back yard. It has 8 25 foot radials and a 4:1 balun. The K3 has the KATU3, KPA3, KTCXO3-1, KFL3A-400, and default 2.8KHz filters. I assembled it and did followed the calibration instructions as well as I could. I think I got everything, but obviously I missed something. Or maybe I just need an elmer to tell me what to do. I cannot seem to find any signals that make the S meter go above a 3 or 4. I have the RF gain turned up a fair ways (mostly to the top), and I can hear static. As I tune up some of the bands on SSB, I can hear a tone that changes higher in pitch as I tune up in frequency. I have tried listening for CW, but I am hearing nothing as I scan through the bands. I had a 10m horizontal dipole taped to my wall for a while until I found time to run the coax out to the back yard. I had hoped that since it was resonant on the 10m band, maybe it would be able to pick up something, but it was no better (or worse) than my vertical. As far as I can tell, the radio seems to transmit. I can see the power meter moving and the SWR meter moving. The ATU seems to be able to find acceptable settings on most of the bands with the vertical. But I can't hear them. You can't work them if you can't hear them, right? This is a desperate plea for help. Is it the radio or me? I think the idea of a couple of short cables is better. Re: [Elecraft] Love/Hate your K3
Hi Stewart TMP connectors can easily be made up with nothing more than a soldering iron (for the centre pin) and pliers (for the outer). It's a one-way trip - they're not designed to be undone. If you have an intermittent I think it's a fair bet that one of the pins looks like it is soldered but the solder may not have taken to the inner conductor. However, I don't know of a UK source for TMP, and if anyone does, I'd be very interested to know ! It happened last week too but recovered but this time it looked final; after significant preparations for the contest and in the middle of a freezing night I wasn't a happy person. I'd sort of resigned myself to waiting a few hours and then driving 35 miles to hopefully borrow a K3 from a friend who wouldn't be doing the contest; first though I'd quickly check the reflector and to my delight up popped a message describing this very fault, caused by the TMP cable coming loose from the J7 connector on the KREF3 board (thanks N3CAQ..!). Off came the lid to reveal a well seated cable but a nudge on J7 with a pen brought the rf back to life! Mightily relieved I carried on and things were fine for a couple of hours until the same thing happened; this time I removed the 2nd receiver and took out the cable to test it and sure enough the meter across the centre pins showed intermittent continuitygently flexing the cable caused the connection to come and go. Interested to speculate how long the cable has been faulty; this ancient model (#145) has definitely showed power fluctuations in the past on occasion but I've assumed a software source (can't explain it..? must be software..!) so maybe it's been like it from new, don't know. The good news was I remembered having a spare new TMP cable left over from the KRX3 fitting which I used and all was then back to normality. This now begs the question of getting replacement TMP cables which I will pose to Aptos since I assume they are custom made and I can't imagine a non-specialised crimping tool doing the job. Moral of this tale is check the reflector first, and watch your connections; the few problems I've had over the years (including random error messages) have all been traced to less than perfect contacts of one sort or another. CQWW was excellent though I am considering claiming for an hours worth of points from Aptos ;-) Thanks to all those calls familiar from here for the Qs on 40m - I was sosb low power. Re: [Elecraft] Import to the UK
Hi Simon Just to confirm: you'll pay a Parcel Force handling charge and then VAT on the total value. There should be no import taxes. If you have a dispute, it's easier to pay and argue afterwards, otherwise you won't get you nice new rig until it's all settled. Your letter from Parcel Force will give you options about how to pay (on-line, in person at depot etc), and there should be an option to collect your rig from the depot. Re: [Elecraft] Adding options later for the K3
Mike It's refreshing to hear from someone who is not considering buying the 100w kit with almost every single option on day one ! Building the basic kit will give you a first class rig at a very competitive price and will give you the confidence to go back inside and add options when you need them. It might be wise to save up and buy and install more than one option at a time, just to save repeatedly opening up the covers, but that is all. The basic kit you refer to comes with DSP IF filtering, and a 2.7K roofing filter, so you needn't order any other filters, unless you're interested in AM/FM, or you're a confirmed CW addict. Filters are one of the easiest options to fit. There's just a small snag with new options (such as the 2m module) - when they're first released, there can be a backlog, and experience shows us that release dates tend to move forward too ! Is it all easy to add later, or is there some option, because of complexity, that I should install at the beginning? It will be replacing a Kenwood TS-570, so don't need to start with a lot of options to see a big difference. I'm planing on using a Heil Goldline microphone, that I was using with the TS-570. Re: [Elecraft] {K-3} K144XV
The datasheet is quite clear - 2m reception is possible on main and sub-receivers. Diversity reception is not, because there's only one 2m antenna connection. Waiting for my k144XV too ! Hi all, As I understand it, the only input path to the K144XV is it's dedicated ANT 3 BNC connector, it cannot receive signals through the ATU. The only way the sub receiver can listen to it is if it is sharing the main receiver's antenna connection and hearing the 28MHz IF through the KXV3A. Otherwise 2 K144XVs would be required. The sub receiver can be set to MAIN to share the main receiver's signal or AUX which depending on how it was hooked up when installed will either be the non-transmitting jack on the ATU (CONFIG:KRX3 set to ANT=ATU) or the AUX RF BNC connector on the rear panel (CONFIG:KRX3 set to ANT=BNC), neither of which will hear the K144XV. With the sub turned on go into BSET and tap ANT to change it's antenna to MAIN. Holding RX ANT will also change the sub's antenna when not in BSET. Thus, 2M diversity reception is not possible with the K144XV. I have the sub RX but don't have the K144XV yet (it should arrive any day), so I could be missing something, but I have been studying the manuals in preparation. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 Receiver Noise Level -- Evaluation and Adjustment
Hello Sverre Thanks for putting your spectral analysis on the web page. It's very interesting and I decided to do my own test. I used Spectrum Laboratory, but it displays similar information to Spectran. I have deviated from white or pink noise, because most of the time we are listening to real signals (or qrm!). I decided to inject a signal: I used my K3 and XG1 to perform the test. The line out from the K3 was connected to line in on my PC. With reference to a fundamental audio signal at 0db, a third harmonic of this was observed at about -40, and a fifth harmonic at around -50dB. The even order harmonics are well down in comparison. I don't know if this is a good result or bad. But it's clear to me that if I am listening to a 700Hz CW note, no amount of audio roll-off at 4kHz or so is going to change the relative levels of those first few harmonics. Just for fun, I ran the same test using an FT-847. The results were very different. Firstly, harmonics were down at -55 or better. Secondly, the even order products (2nd and 4th) were louder than the odd ones. And lastly, the FT-847 graph showed several close-in spurious alongside each harmonic, which had been completely absent with the K3. I hope this all makes sense. And apologies if my use of technical terms is not spot-on. I'm just an amateur, with no training in electronics or radio ! Re: [Elecraft] K3 used prices - UK
I think that part of Julian's original mail has so far gone unanswered - that is the question of valuing used Elecraft K3 series equipment. There hasn't been much for sale recently so there is little to go on. My starting point, I think, would be around 2/3rds of the price you paid. Of course, this might be complicated by the varying exchange rate and occasional price increases. Brett There's one more parameter to check: AF LIM If you set this to small numbers (say 1 to 5) you will get almost no audio with AGC OFF. Hope it's as simple as that ? AGC-S seems to work as it should and AGC-F as expected but if I turn AGC off my rig does silent. I'm still able to see the S-meter swinging to the signal that I was listening to. Current settings are as follows: AGC Decay = Soft AGC Hold = 0.00 AGC Pulse = Normal AGC Slope = 10 AGC Threshold = 7 AGC-F = 120 AGC-S = 20 I've made a few changes to this setup and I'm unable to get a sound out with AGC off. I've performed the SPI clock mod and the extreme signal protection mods. I've tested with both AF and RF gains maxed and the output it still silent. I've also fully swiped the range several times to rule out a dirty pot. [Elecraft] K3 VFO Tuning noise reduction
Hello all Has anyone carried out the VFO tuning noise reduction modification yet ? The photo is a little unclear (or maybe it's my eyes) - it looks as though one resistor-diode combination has the anode connected to the resistor and the other pair has the cathode connected to the resistor. Have I got this right ? Perhaps the folks at Aptos read this reflector .
