[Elecraft] K2 - REMOTE KPA100/KAT100

2008-07-02 Thread MTcja

K2 6442 is working fine and I was able to make a number of contact on Field
Day using an antenna hung from a crane at 103 feet. However, success at
home has been frustrating as I am in a hole, in a valley, at the low end of
the sun cycle, in a community that does not allow antennas. Currently, I am
using a High Sierra screwdriver with tuned radials that I have to set up and
break down every time I use it. 15 Watts max has not resulted in very many
stations hearing me.

To make up for all of the above shortcomings, I am looking into ordering the
KPA100 and KAT100 and mounting them together in the Elecraft enclosure.
However, I am a little leery. This is an after market modification and will
not include the awesome assembly manual that allowed a neophyte like me to
successfully build a K2.

I would like to hear from anyone who has built a Remote KPA/KAT100. Any
comments are welcome. However, I am most interested in the following:

1. Who has the best, most complete instructions on how to successfully
build this mod? So far I have only found one source on the net.
2. What are the pitfalls that an inexperienced builder should be watchful
for?
3. Any other comments welcome.

Thanks.

[Elecraft] K2 6442 ON THE AIR

2008-05-18 Thread MTcja

Thanks to the patient assistance from Don, W3FPR K2 6442 was on the air last
night (for the first time) with N7CMJ, Less of Evergreen, MT. We initiated
our contact on 2m to coordinate and then made contact on 10m and 15m.
According to N7CMJ my signal was 5/5 with 5 watts. His frequency readout
was 28.499.09 to my 28.500. I guess that is good enough for now. All I
have left to do is install the 60m accessory and the KIO2 (looks
intimidating).

All was not perfect however. Just a couple of problems cropped up.

1. I am getting a flash of HiCur occasionally when I transmit. The Current
setting is at the recommended 2.0 and I was only running 5 Watts.

2. According to N7CMJ the Elecraft mic sounded great. Not so with my Heil
Traveler Headset. For reasons unknown, it caused a thumping or pulsing
sound in the receiving station. I do not know what this could be and
neither did Less. Per Heil instructions, I am using the same adapter as
that used by Kenwoods.

Suggestions more than welcome on the above issues.

Again, thanks to Don, Less and also Gary (W7GFB) for all the help getting
on the air.

[Elecraft] KSB2 INSTALL - RX LOST

2008-05-15 Thread MTcja

Just throwing this out there while I start backtracking to figure it out.

I have installed the K160RX, KAT2, KBT2 and now the KSB2. Prior to install
I was able to hear activity on the bands. After install I could hear very
few stations. On the ones that I could hear, it was barely so even with
full AF gain and the SWR meter would barely deflect. This AM a friend tried
to TX on 40m at 5, 10 and 50 Watts. So it seems I have induced a deafness
problem. I have also installed the Elecraft mic with the Rbias resister and
jumpers. I was missing one jumper but used one from my computer junk box.
It was slightly different as it does not have a top like the ones Elecraft
provided. I include this on the off chance this might mean something to
those of you far more experienced and knowledgeable than I. I have
attempted to TX into a dummy load and I get dot deflections on the SWR
meter in the 5-7 range but a separate watt meter indicates well below the
set power.

Anyway, if anyone has any thoughts on tracking down this gremlin they are
certainly welcome.

Thanks 73's,

Chris

[Elecraft] KAT2 INSTALL - VOLTAGE AT U4, PIN1

2008-05-07 Thread MTcja

After listening for a while and reviewing basic and advanced operation I am
now beginning the install of the K2 accessories. For the KAT2 I am getting
.001 V at U4/PIN 1. Is this close enough to zero? If not, please advise
the best way to trace back the origin of this voltage. BTW, in TUNE I am at
3.8. Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT2 INSTALL - VOLTAGE AT U4, PIN1

2008-05-07 Thread MTcja

Don:

Thanks again. Good news. And thanks for the hint I do have the k60xv to
install so this is a big help. I am kind of going by guess and by golly on
what order I install things. I have started with the KAT2 and had planned
to move to the SSB2, but I may do the 160m accessory first. Suggestions
always appreciated.

 Chris,

Unless you are really careful with your DMM leads and have zeroed your
DMM, *any* reading of .001 volts (or even up to .003) can be considered
zero under normal conditions because it is likely noise being coupled
onto the DMM leads from sources unknown.

So, yes, that is close enough to zero.

Additional hint: if you are ever going to install the K60XV, use a 470
ohm resistor at the R6 location rather than the 47 ohm value. If you
have the K60XV in hand, you will find an extra 470 ohm resistor just for
that purpose packaged with the kit.

[Elecraft] KAT2 CALIBRATION - R 1 2

2008-05-07 Thread MTcja

I am in the process of calibrating the tuner. I think that I have R1 set
using an external meter. However, with full deflections of R2, the LCD
indication does not move from 0.0r. Using my DMM to measure resistance of
R1 at the center terminal I got 36.0k. The closest I could get with R2 was
36.08k (not in TUNE mode). Please let me know what to do to resolve this
issue. Thanks again for all the help as I approach completion.

[Elecraft] K2 6442 - Chasing zero on alignment.

2008-05-04 Thread MTcja

I have been working through the alignment prior to final assembly on my K2.
Up through the receiver pre-alignment things seem ok. However, I seem to
have some problems on the TX alignment on page 80.

To do this process I am using the integrated meter and the Elecraft Dummy
Load. In addition, I do not have sufficient understanding to reason out
things that do not seem to work as expected. I have done the procedure
several times and it seems that I have to make bigger than expected changes
each time. Here is what has happened:

1.  Larger than expected changes;
2. BAND +/- skips band and have to manually tune to frequency or remains on
same freq;
3. When aligning 17m adjusting c32/4 does not change power indication.
Indication will flicker up or down by .1 watt.

If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it. Is there a way
to get everything back to a default starting place and start over with the
whole part III process? I am really hoping to get this resolved so I can do
the final assembly and install all the accessories. I do not want to do
that until I am relatively confident that the alignment is ok.

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

[Elecraft] K2 6442 About to be Born......

2008-05-03 Thread MTcja

Alignment pains 6 min apart

Up to now all TA results have been within specs. All the way to tx
alignment on page 80 where confusion entered and ignorance poked his head in
the delivery room.

The second column on page 80 starts stepping through the bands after
aligning L3 4 on 80m. However, there is no mention of using TUNE in
conjunction with the procedure like the tx adjustment for 40m done
previously. Should that be assumed even though the instructions do not
indicate?

Any assistance on this in order to get this baby delivered and accessories
installed will be greatly appreciated.
