Re: [Elecraft] Internet / cell phones

2022-01-10 Thread Tommy
The hobby of Ham radio is not "fading away". Numbers (at least in the
U.S.) are INCREASING. Yes it seems most people spend every 30 seconds of
their day and night staring at their "smart" phones, it actually sickens
me daily every time I see it. It's like a damn disease. And don't even
get me started on "The Bible"...

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 204, Issue 15

2021-05-16 Thread Tommy Judson via Elecraft
My Goodness, something I am able to make a reasonable comment on in this forum:
“Drafting”.

In the early fifties I was put into high school a drafting class to fill out a
schedule. It became my favorite subject and off I went into a lifelong
obsession - yes “obsession “. That was the beginning of me being obsessed with
perfection. Finally retired from a career starting with a 2H pencil, scale and
triangles which matured to developing a 3-D design process on a brand new CAD
system bought by my employer in the late seventies. The purpose of the 3-D
process results was to be able to tumble large multimillion dollar structures
to determine how they fit into the humankind environment.

Have now been retired thirty years and just wish I could figure out how to
easily read the manual for a KX-2!

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 204, Issue 6

2021-04-13 Thread Tommy Judson via Elecraft
Make a bad purchase good?
Bought a KX-2 off the internet and have found that it is missing several of the
screws that held the end plates on. Asked about that and the seller said he
tried to put some sort of protective end plates onto the radio but couldn’t do
it so threw them away and put the original end plates back on. What concerns
me about just going to the hardware store and getting more screws (that might
not be the proper thread/length) is I think two of the screws held the final
output transistors onto that end plate which I assume was for that end plate to
act as a heatsink.
The seller said he used the radio and it seemed to be ok but I am concerned
about the lack of heatsink/output transistor integrity and any possible damage.
Maybe I’m on the wrong track here because of never seeing a KX-2 before.
The radio looks good - no scratches or dings and the seller told me to find out
what is needed to be done to fix it and he’d send that to me.
Any help on this concern would be appreciated.
F.Y.I - the serial number is 03742 and the Firmware is REF5. Sure would like
to know when this radio was made and if this is the latest firmware.

Re: [Elecraft] Reset Third-Hand KX3

2020-05-22 Thread Tommy Judson via Elecraft
Hi,

Significant phrase - glutton for punishment - written by a respondent. Being
an engineer I’ve sometimes regretted taking on a project or two because of
thinking I could fix just about anything.

The manuals will be with the radio so will dig through them for a guide when
the package arrives before doing anything else. Looked on the company website
and there seems to be complete info on each of their products too. Also have
Cady’s book The Elecraft KX Line that I’ve been reading and find it is chock
full of good info.

Think I’m in for an awakening - the last rig or two I owned had 6146 finals
with 807 modulators driving a pair of 500 Z's in a hot box. The KX 3 is most
likely about the same size as one of those tubes.

Thank you to those who replied to my first post.

Hmm…getting conflicting words so here is the list sent to Elecraft. Guess I’ll

All this stay in place time will not be completely wasted, a couple days ago
dug out my classical guitar and now communicating with a professor of guitar at
a university near here to sign up for more on-line lessons.

Ok, the first pack (on left in your image) contains the items 1 thru 5 on my
list (I didn’t list the hat because I’m not a hat guy.). So we are good so far.

So do you have the remanding items too:
6 . KX3 (CADY)BOOK 40.00

7. AX1 WHIP 99.95

8. AXE1-40 40MTRCOIL ___?

9 . KXPD2 PADDLE139.95. (Yes, want
the “2” paddle)

10. BNC-UHF ADAPTER 7.95

11. KX2GNDPLUG MINI PLUG8.95 FOR TRAILING WIRE?
(Counterpose wire?)

12. Also want the cable needed to hook an outboard key.

Re: [Elecraft] Availability

2020-05-16 Thread Tommy Judson via Elecraft

Good Morning

I’ve been studying how to establish a ham station and asking around what is
available to do that with these days. A month or so of research brought me to
Elecraft - best bang for the buck receivers. This narrowed my search down to
just a couple radios. Now thank you to this forum's members I’ve decided what
Elecraft has listed for sale I would like to use in a newly established ham
station.

I sent a wish list to Elecraft to see what is actually in stock knowing the
present pandemic could cause shortages of supplies and labor because of the
social distancing requirements.

Now I read on this forum many questions about when customers will actually
receive the radios they plunked down $4K to buy when first announced some time
ago. One customer mentioned that he was in an older age bracket and wondered
if he’d get his in time to use it - I’m five years older than what he said was
his age.

I’m wondering if I should consider another company’s products - find a company
if any that might have equipment in stock.

To end on a good note I need to say there has been plenty of time to leisurely
accumulate parts and design and erect a by the book optimum height inverted V
antenna out in my several acre front yard. All needed now is to hook a radio
onto the lead running down the pole and to under a small tree that will shade
me and a radio relaxed in a lawn chair.

Guess where I will not develop as much anxiety as others over delayed shipment
of equipment is because I did not send money with my wish list - or maybe I
should to actually get my name on the list to get my choice of equipment?

Any thoughts ?

Thank you Tommy Judson

Re: [Elecraft] Establishing A New Station..

2020-05-13 Thread Tommy Judson via Elecraft
My thoughts on using a loop - none whatsoever. Will have to see what that
piece of equipment might be. (Been away from HF since the mid seventies.)

Your apt will be twice as high as my apt and maybe get twice as much wind, mine
experiences plenty. I live on a corner of a building on the peripheral of the
downtown tall building area. One 30’ glass panel wall faces south and the other
faces west with a three foot square column at the apex. Our view is southwest
looking miles up the Trinity River.

My first thought was to put a horizontal “V” wire antenna with the ends
drooping to get the correct length for operation on 40 meters. Maybe some sort
of Loop antenna would be better, will have to think about this. Thank you,
Tommy

Yes, the tuner is a must.
I ordered a fiberglass mast and enough parts to assemble a 40meter inverted V
and will place a permanent mount in the ground to support this configuration.
I plan on being able to set-up/take down the pole/antenna easily whenever I
want to get on the air. Of course it’ll stay up most all the time when I’m in
residence here.

That is good advice - I went to our credit union and after figuring out the
cost of a complete station took out a share backed loan to get the best
interest and be a forced saving account of sorts because of paying it off.
Most always do this when making outlandish purchases.

The KX2 is the logical choice in this situation mostly because when back in my
home in the 17th floor apartment in a 400 person retirement facility I’m not
sure I will be able to operate. If I do it will be most likely be with an end
weighted wire suspended off a balcony - it’s a hundred feet or so to the
ground. So my permanent home will be the portable place and this country RV
will be the more permanent place - especially until this coronavirus epidemic
is better controlled.
That virus delights in getting into large facilities housing the older more
infirm population. There is only one case there AT THIS TIME. I read where
similar facilities have a large percentage of the in house population testing
positive.
Anyway, so much for the logical choice, maybe having more buttons and knobs to
fiddle with would add to the fun…

2020-05-12 Thread Tommy Judson via Elecraft
Good Morning, I have a simple but difficult question for the CW ops.

I’m wanting to get back to ham radio and specifically CW. Since I’m starting
from scratch I am looking hard at all equipment needed to get on the air. I’ve
ordered supplies to assemble a 40M inverted V and have been thinking the best
first rig I ought to order would be a KX2. Now reading the posts on this forum
I see that 95% of the ops use the KX3s.

Would anyone please like to educate me on these very unbalanced rig ownership
numbers?

Thank you, Tommy2

Re: [Elecraft] Which Paddle?

2020-05-04 Thread Tommy Judson via Elecraft
Well, gotta make up my mind on which paddle to order along with the radio.
Just checked and my CU deposited what I thought the cost of a complete station
should be into my account. These isolate in place options are dangerous, it
was to easy to do this on-line.

Not sure I want to spend it now though - preliminary buyer’s remorse?

Think I’ll go over everything again, maybe have forgotten something. Let's
see, antenna and feed line, check; inverted V support pole, check; and radio,
check (except what paddle). Haven’t nailed down exactly what all other options
might as well be purchased along with the radio either.

That’s ok, got about a week before moving out to a nice country hill side a
handful of miles out of the city limits. Been looking forward to this for a
long time and want to savor it for a while.

Re: [Elecraft] "2" or "3" Paddle

2020-05-04 Thread Tommy Judson via Elecraft
Which one?

This is something like the guy with more than one watch, he never knows what
the time really should be.

There is so much discussion about the two paddles it seems to me they both are
good and it really comes down to just which one an operator owns to use. (Yes,
read reports from owners of both but could not read a specific reason one was
chosen over the other - in the same operating scenario.)

So where I’m coming from is I’ve never used either. I learned on a Vibroplex
Lightening Bug but now with the advent of electronic keyers don’t want to dig
it out to really use. And am wondering if it makes any difference which I get
when ordering a new radio. Ie, which would be the easiest to take up and use
considering my experience. At this time I'm thinking the “3” because it has a
longer pivot arm - maybe the same or close to the what the bug has. This might
not really be all oranges though since the fore arm will most likely just
rotate instead pushing the dash lever with finger movement along with the arm
movement as with the bug.

Guess when I order a radio I’ll just order its specifically designated
components - unless there is something constructive to be said by anyone?

P.S. Someone specifically wrote the beveled paddle pads on the “2” were more
comfortable.

Glad to see this post, could almost be from me in a week or so. The only

Re: [Elecraft] Windows Needed

2020-05-01 Thread Tommy Judson via Elecraft
Good Morning Clay,

Thank you for the offer to chat. I’m overwhelmed with the info available and
compliments posted here and other places on the Elecraft equipment. Near as I
can remember the last time I worked 75 meter phone was as a net control on the
3961 net in the early 70’s. I am absolutely out of touch with the whole realm
of HF ham radio.

So fast forward to today while in retirement I would like to work some 40 meter
CW and reading various postings on the .www the products from Elecraft kept
coming up - especially all the raves on their receivers. I do remember the
saying, “if you can’t hear them, you can’t work them”. So here I am wanting to
buy a KXN so I can go out and sit under a tree and do a little ham radio.

I’ve read enough to want to get a KX3 so downloaded its user manual. Moving
through it I ran across a sentence saying there was a need for a cable to hook
to a PC…oops, that sounded like the Elecraft system was only compatible with
Bill Gate's stuff and not Steve Job’s - darn.

My question now is should I get software to provide a fake Windows platform for
Elecraft or get a real PC and use it as a dedicated option with a KX3? If the
later what would be the best choice to purchase?

Would really appreciate hearing from you or anyone with a creditable
opinion/knowledge on this subject.

73, Tommy

I have seen the same on my KX2, while dialing it seems to freeze at

minutes. Kind of annoying but not too worrying to me. At least for now.

Has anyone noticed the same symptom and if so, what had to be done to fix

Any help would be appreciated?

Chuck and all,

How many actually use the clock in the K3, K3S, KX3 or KX2?
I certainly don't. In the case of the KX3 it is used to time the charging of
the internal batteries - good use.

I can see a ham without a watch or cell phone to want the rig to display the
time for logging, but for me, my good old Timex on my wrist tells me what time
to log. The clock in my KX3 is more difficult to access than simply glancing
at my wrist!

I have never even set the clock in my K3 or KX3! Nor do I feel a need to do so.

As far as the K4 Linux software/firmware being internet connected, I have my
reservations about that. I have enough stuff connected to the internet, and
someone will have to demonstrate the benefit of my ham radio being connected to
the internet in addition to my computers.

If connection of the K4 to the internet is to be done, I have concerns about
security and personal privacy. Even Linux is subject to bad stuff from the
internet - it is not entirely secure, it is just that the number of users is
small compared to other OS versions and hackers just do not bother for most
cases.

When my refrigerator or microwave begins to listen in to my conversations, I
begin to worry about the BIG Brother consequences.

BTW, I do not have an Alexa or Siri device for those security reasons.
I can easily use a switch on the wall to operate a light switch and it is
secure. I can turn on my home theater or my computer AV application when I want
to hear music or view videos.

Call me old-fashioned, but I like to have control of my environment.
The Internet Of Things seems to be fraught with exposures and dangers that I am
not willing to accept.

[Elecraft] Right paddle on my KXPD2 issue

The right paddle seems to work intermittently on my KX2 paddles. I
have to hit it several times to get it to work but even then it's

difference.

My settings are: CW IAMB = A

CW Key 1 = hand ( I do have a key plugged in
but in or out it makes no difference)

                      CW key 2 = left = DdASH

Subject: [Elecraft] WSJT-X K3/K3s hanging as Tx

For those using WSJT-X, sometimes I find the K3s is locked as transmit but
there is no RF being sent and no Rx from the K3.

Looking at the P3 I see a jitter on the upper half of the screen as if there
was a tiny output but no Rf is seen on any of the three SWR meters in line
(K3s, AP3 & LP-100A).

I couldn't get WSJT to receive, looked at the settings, all were correct and
as is sometimes needed with WSJT-X, I rebooted to get it to work properly
but it still did not lock onto the K3s frequency.
Rebooted again and then I realized the K3s was in that TX condition with
both the red & yellow LEDs lit and that jitter on the
P3 upper screen.

This happens every so often and what I
have to do is touch any of the buttons on the K3s and it disengages this
situation.
I did that to deal with the issue I
mentioned above. I could restart the K3s but then I'd have to restart
LP-Bridge and wait, so I use the quick fix.

Anyone experience this and figure out how to prevent it?

Thanks!

cases made of metal, and with good electrical contact between case and lid.
Light weight is desirable. Any suggestions from the List? My best idea so

the desired sizes is not easy. Note to self: Don't be too upset if you have

Yup, I did the Sunspot counts daily for the AAVSO for 8 years a

number of individual spots, again somewhat hard to discern, and k is
an "observatory factor", which appears to be much like Einstein's
Cosmological Constant, and can take on any value that makes the data

Recently bought a KX3 and a Buddistick vertical (like, 2 weeks ago). Love
the KX3 it is a great radio... however... so far my efforts to hear much of
anything, much less make a contact with someone, has been frustrating to
say the least. I live in an apartment and am surrounded by power lines for
one thing. The background noise level on 40 is pretty bad varies but is
s7-9 mostly. I took my setup to a nearby park and the bands were
definitely quieter. So the local manmade noise level is an issue (and one
reason I chose the KX3 was the hope that its rcvr and filtering could help
with that.)

Have yet to make a single contact, so I am just wondering if I just
happened to choose a really lousy period of solar conditions for HF? Or is
the base loaded vertical a joke?

I would love to be able to find another ham even close by just to try and
get some sort of an HF QSO even if it is with someone down the block.

AM stations. :)

(On a side note the tuner in the KX3 is great!. That thing was able to get
a match for 80 meters on the Buddistick which was showing something like
25:1 swr. The KX3 tuner clicked and rattled for a while and found a match
to <2:1. Not sure how much actual RF is going out, probably not much... but
I was amazed it could tune to that high an SWR.)

Put a dummy load on the KX2 so you don't clutter up the airways.

  Dummy load being used.

Once you have that, the next step is to set the audio level correctly.
You have 2 controls to manipulate - the KX2 MIC GAIN and the Line Out
setting for the soundcard in the computer.
You want to have a mid-range setting for the KX2 MIC Gain, so set that
first, then go to the computer and make a trial adjustment of the LINE
OUT (or Speaker) setting for the soundcard - about 50% is usually a
good starting point.

Already done.

Then use your digital mode software to do a transmit.
Look at the KX2 ALC meter - you need to adjust the audio levels so you
have 4 bars solid on the ALC meter with the 5th bar flickering.

While in transmit there is NO SIGNAL leaving the radio. NO power bars
show. Turning the mic gain does nothing.

Port drop-down indicates that WSJT-X doesn't see the KX2 USB cable. I had
this happen to me until I realized that I still had the KX2 utility app
running. It had the com port. Once I shut that down the com port was freed
and COM7 showed up in the Serial Port drop-down in WSJT-X. Is the KX2
utility app still running on your PC?

On the File\Settings\Radio tab I have selected the rig as Elecraft K3/KX3
the serial port as COM7 and my PTT Method is CAT, not VOX.

As KN3ILZ said, click the Test CAT button and if it turns green it's
configured properly.

I have the jumpers and cables for the SignaLink USB to KX2 as well. I've
just never used them. If this hasn't solved the problem I can try it out
with my SignaLink USB when I get home.

Tim

Bob,

I have the appropriate cables for the Signalink to radio. Everything
is hooked up per instructions. I've even got my KXUSB cable connected
and I'm only able to receive and decode. Transmitting is now my problem.

SO frustrating.

A program like Dimension 4 will sync against the Bureau of Standards

The SignaLink has nothing to do with rig control. All it is is a
single-channel sound card, plus an external VOX circuit to generate PTT.
You don't need the VOX circuit with elecraft rigs, their own VOX works fine
in digital modes, so all you are getting from the SignaLink is the sound
card. You can get better sound cards for less, but if you already have a
SignaLink, you can use it as your sound card.

What you need for rig control is a serial port connection to the rig's
serial control port. The KXUSB is your best bet, or if you already have a
serial port or a USB-to-serial adapter, you can use a KXSER between the
serial port and the KX2.

In WSJT-X, for PTT you can simply use VOX, which does not require rig
control, or if you have rig control working, you can have the rig control
do the PTT. Apart from that, what rig control really gives you is frequency
control. In addition to giving you instant band changes and avoiding
logging contacts on the wrong band, rig control also enables WSJT-X's Split
capability, which tunes the rig's dial frequency automatically in order to
keep the audio tones you are using between 1500 Hz and 2000 Hz. This helps
avoid transmitting spurious signals created by audio harmonics, and it
ensures that the transmitted power does not drop off towards the edges of
the receiver bandpass.

Rig control is certainly worthwhile, but it needs something separate from
the SignaLink.

Tom,

Why are you using a Signalink ???Its not needed for WSJT-X, and
I'm not sure that its needed for any other digital mode. You can
connect the KX to your computer using the steps below.

1. Find yourself a good USB external soundcard that provides a
48,000 Hz DVD quality INPUT and OUTPUT.WSJT-X requires this, you
can pick one up at Amazon for less than $30, or get a good one for
$70. I'm not sure the Signalink provides that DVD quality out.
2. Use the KUSB cable for CAT control. WSJT-X will use it for PTT
and Freq control.
3. Get two 2.5mm cables for the stereo in and out and hook them up
to the external soundcard.
4. Set the Windows audio in for the soundcard at 100, and use the AF
knob to set the dB in to WSJT-X
5.Use the rig's PWR knob to set the output power, and then when in
tx, set the MIC knob to show 4 bars of ALC

That's it ... in WSJT-X set the rig for K3/KX3, set the serial port
as the same one that the KUSB is assigned to, baud rate at 38400, 8
data bits, 2 stop bits, no handshake, PTT at CAT, Mode at Data/Pkt,
Split at RIG. Once its setup, the TEST CAT button there should turn
green, you can then click the TEST PTT and it will kick the rig in.

Hope this helps,

Neil, KN3ILZ

Re: [Elecraft] FW: Proper installation of PL 259's

2013-11-13 Thread Tommy
Hey ya 'young whippersnapper' calm down some? If you want to know 'stuff'
about Elecraft equipment, this IS the place. If you want to know something
about antennas/feed lines, try www.towertalk.com which is the correct
place for this PL259 thread in the first place. If you don't know where to
look for information, ASK! But just about every time someone says How do
you there are typically 30 to 100 responses of 'how I do it',
nothing related to Elecraft equipment. I'm sure the Elecraft reflector
moderator does not really have the time to stop these type threads every
time they get started simply because he is off helping make a company run.

Yeah, really.

A lot of people take really common stuff for granted, like soldering
connectors onto coax. For those of us who don't have decades of
experience/mistakes under their belt (and who got their ticket in the era of
the internet and pre-made coax), small things like this (which have big
impacts) are lost to convenience.

For every person like me who freely admits that I dont know the correct way
to solder a PL-259 and thought pre-made was 'good enough', there are
probably 10 who are too afraid to come forward to admit it. You should be
happy that some of us /want/ to make their own coax instead of the premade
stuff. Isn't that keeping a little part of the 'real' hobby alive.

I'll get off your lawn now. Im just a young whippersnapper.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB got lost = Solution

2013-10-25 Thread Tommy
Again thanks to all who actually read my post and offered helpful
suggestions.

I have finally discovered the infamous operator error that caused my K3 to
lose rcvr audio when I would change modes from CW to SSB.

As mentioned in my original post, for the past 61 years I have been
primarily a CW operator, therefore seldom paid close (enough) attention to
the settings for the voice modes. Therefore when setting up the Rx
Equalization, I set it up for CW with the below setting:

50 100 200 400 800 160024003200

-16 -16 -6 +15 +16 -15 -16 -16

AND I did not set up Rx Equalization for USB/LSB. I did save the
configuration for CW. Obviously when I switched to USB or LSB, I could hear
no voice audio. It was only after discovering my 'operator error' I changed
USB/LSB to:

-16 -16 +16 +8 +12 +12 +12 -16

And now I have normal audio (to my ears) in all three modes.

Thanks again for your helpful suggestions and let's close this thread.

This morning when I turned on my K3, in hopes of being able to perform some
positive troubleshooting on my lost USB and LSB rcvr audio, I went to the
20m SSB band and lo and behold my USB rcvr audio is NOW WORKING!!
I have done nothing to my K3 except for having gone over the menu

what fixed it. A worrisome result - but it's now working!

I am having a configuration issue that I have spent hours trying to figure
out and need some help please.

As a CW person, I seldom operate SSB and I am trying to get set up for this
weekend's CQWW SSB test. Below are some of my configuration for my K3 and
the attached are jpg configuration sheets from K3 EZ. In any band in the SSB
portion, I have no audio output any time I am in the USB or LSB mode,
however if I change from USB to CW, I have normal audio but of course I
can't copy the SSB signals. This is true whether I have my SUB turned on or
not. I have my CM-500 headset plugged into the rear of my K3 and I have the
RS20S headset plugged into the front panel PHONES jack and I have no audio
with either or both of the headsets plugged in. With both headsets removed,
I have no speaker audio in the SSB mode, but normal audio in the CW or AM
mode.

Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

In CONFIG I have:

SPKRS = 1
SPKR+PH = YES
L-MIX-R = A b

Thanks for your input and 73,

PS: I have been trying to configuration pictures from K3-EZ but nothing is

[Elecraft] K3 - SSB audio got lost !

2013-10-23 Thread Tommy
I am having a configuration issue that I have spent hours trying to figure
out and need some help please.

As a CW person, I seldom operate SSB but I am trying to get set up for this
weekend's CQWW SSB contest. I have tried posting two configuration pages
from K3-EZ but with the file size limitation of about 30 kb and I exceed
that. Below are some of my configuration for my K3. In any band in the SSB
portion, I have no audio output anytime I am in the USB or LSB mode, however
if I change from USB/LSB to CW, I have normal audio but of course I can't

In CONFIG I have:

I am pretty sure I have one configuration set incorrect, but using both the

cannot find what I have incorrect.

Re: [Elecraft] Keyer weighting (was 'Elecraft keyer chip replacement')

2013-08-22 Thread Tommy
Certainly not picking on Ralph's comments, but I have a question. As a CW
operator for some 61 years, I have always wondered why a lot of CW operators
adjust their sending weight to suit their own ears (taste)? Do they then sit
back and send to themselves because their weight adjustment sounds good to
them? For instance, what if Ralph calls CQ with his weight on the 'heavy'
side (52%) and since I prefer a normal 3 to 1 ratio, I probably will
not call him because to me his CW sounds pretty bad. If we could back up a
step and all CW operators set their weight to the 'normal' three to one
weight, wouldn't that be more ideal? Then if someone ask you to change your
weight to the 'heavy side', you could then comply with that persons wishes?

I used to run QRQ and if your weight was set to anything other than the
standard 3/1 and you were sending at over 50 wpm, not too many folks could
copy you. If you operate in very many contest, your CW is going to stick out
like a sore thumb if your weight is anything other than the standard.

So why not stick what has been the standard for a very many years?

Again, I am not knocking how Ralph likes to make his outgoing CW sound.

Tom - W4BQF

Many people confuse ratio with weight. 'Weight' makes both the dots and
dashes longer (or shorter), but preserves the 3:1 ratio between the two.
I've used some radios with internal keyers that have adjustable weight
(wrongly named) that only makes the dots longer. Sounds terrible, IMHO.

I prefer my weight slightly on the 'heavy' side (52% on my Super CMOS III).
'Choppy' sounding CW usually means that the weighting is too light.

I always use an external keyer that does exactly what I want, except in a
contest, where my microHam keyer (via N1MM) has provisions for correctly
changing weight. Sounds good either way.

My internal keyers are for emergency use only.

Very well put and true.except when it comes to cars then it has to
be a Carol Shelby 2013 Mustang again all AMERICAN MADE. But they
were all sold before production even started, it was the highest HP

had one of them you could trade for a dozen Porsche's and still have
money left over. It was one of those cars that if you had to ask how much
it was you couldn't afford it.

Not like Elecraft radios and equipment where the highest performance
is at the most reasonable cost of any.

 Mike,
I bet the equipment is donated and besides these non-USA manufacturers
have been advertising and thus supporting the league for many years.
They
also make good gear but remember that there are one hell of a lot of K3,
K2
and KX3 radios being used outside North America. Our hobby is world wide
-
DX is the driving point for many of us. Note also that ARRL remains
aloof
as it needs to if producing credible reviews in QST.

Competition is good. The old USA manufactures lost it with SSB and
solid state electronics for a number of years. Now there is a new group
of
companies really competing. I bet no one offers the service and
attention
to its customers that Elecraft does. The bar has been lifted and the
standard of radios from overseas has also improved but can they match
the personal touch of Eric, Wayne and friends?

Yes I am happy to see my country of birth and citizenship again
producing quality ham radio equipment. It is natural to feel this way
but
my dream car is still a Porsche.

Septembers QST arrived the other day and on page 13 is a run down of W1AW.
Noticed its loaded with all non U.S. made rigs! No Elecraft or Ten Tec
 rigs both made in America.
Just a thought that makes me go h?
