Re: [Elecraft] K1 Keyer Problem...
Rui: Check to make sure your keyer paddle contacts are cleaned and making a low resistance contact when closed. The Keyer circuit in the K1 generates dots and dashes by connecting two different values resistors to ground. The voltage drop determines whether it is a dot or dash. Burnish the keyer contacts and I feel sure the problem will go away. [Elecraft] K3 Manual
Eric and Wayne Thanks to my HP P2015d Laser printer with duplexer I now have a printed and bound copy of the K3 Manual and Schematics. [Elecraft] k1 battery option and mods
Henning: I would not install the internal battery option. It requires that you install a smaller speaker and there is always the danger of the batteries leaking and damaging the board in the K1. It is very easy to make up a small battery pack and a short cable to connect it to the radio. Additionally you have to remove the batteries to charge them if you use ni-cads. I use a small 12volt 2.2 amp gel cell which will operate the K1 for most of a weekend. One other thing is that the option provides for only eight AA cells and they will only produce 12.0Volts at maximum voltage when using standard AA, only 10.8 Volts when using nic-cads, and the Gel Cell will provide about 13.8 Volts at maximum. The output power of the K1 is directly proportional to the input voltage supply. I installed the internal battery in my K2 and later removed it because of the danger of the leaking battery and the fact that it made the K2 much heavier. I would not install the extended coverage in the VFO because the tuning becomes very touchy. One rotation of the knob causes a much greater change in frequency. In the 80KHz setting you have about 8KHz per revolution of the tuning knob and in the 180KHz setting it is 18KHz per revolution. I love the backlight option and highly recommend it to you. It is very easy to install and makes the K1 much nicer when operating at night. Please understand these are my personal observations and preferences. You may have other reasons for making the changes. Jim Younce K4ZM K2 SN:18 K2 Field Tester ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] that Drake or Collins sound
Perhaps the one thing that we are all overlooking in the nice sound of the Collins and Drake radios is that their bandpass was much wider than the modern day radios and today there is far more QRM on the bands due to increased numbers of amateurs in the same spectrum. I loved my KWM-2 and used it for 14 years but doubt that it would be a very good radio to use in a contest in this day and time. Re: Fwd: [Elecraft] KPA100 Failing to Produce High Power
Curt: I bet you are using the KPA100 with a KAT100 and using the tune button on the front panel of the K2. When the KPA100 is connected the output power of the KPA100 is limited to 20 watts. Try plugging a key into the key jack and set it for Hand Key mode and press the key. I bet you will see the amount of power out that you have set with the power control on the front panel of the K2. If this is the case I fought the same thing for a day before I realized that the K2 firmware limits the power out to 20 watts in the tune mode when a KAT100 is connected. -- Original message -- From: Curt Milton [EMAIL PROTECTED] I did some additional troubleshooting, but maybe there is nothing unusual in these bias measurements? Here is the behavior i am getting. First column is K2 power setting (on 20m), second is what the K2 reads on transmit, and third is my meter. [Elecraft] OT: 50 years
Vic: Congratulations on your 50th year in this wonderful hobby. Your email got me to checking and I also will celebrate the completion of 50 years on the 27th of this month. On November 27, 1956, at the ripe age of 16, I received the callsign KN4LXU. In March 1957 I removed the N from the call when I passed my General class license and in January 1967 I passed the exam for my Extra Class and was issued Amateur Extral Class Radio Operators License Certificate number AE-8M-31. The 31th to be issued in the Mobile, Alabama FCC office. I don't remember the exact date that I changed my callsign to K4ZM but it was during the first chance the FCC offered to Extras and in the early 1970's. Also note that all exams except for the Novice were taken in front of an FCC Engineer and involved drawing diagrams and coping CW. I have been active all 50 years and still have a passion for the hobby. My interest in amateur radio provided me with the first step into my fantastic career in the electronics industry that spanned from Aviation Electronics in the US Navy to Technical Assistance Agent for a local electronics manunfacture and included a short time in electronic sales, service of medical electronics equipment, service of communications equipment and a stent of 21 years as the director of a biomedical department in a local hospital. I retired from the hospital 7 years ago and in August of this year a local electronics manufacture asked me to come out of retirement and provide technical support for its customers. So at 66 I am back in the working world. LOL I hope I have at least 30 more years in amateur radioLOL Thanks for the reminder and the trip down memory lane. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] CW recognition
Doug: I was just the opposite of you in basic training in San Diego. (July of 1958) I was able to copy solid 35WPM with a pencil, thanks to a vocational course in high school that taught basic and advanced electronics and an instructor that allowed us to work on our ability to copy code for 30 minutes a day. I took the exam for my Novice license in Nov 1956 during my first year of vocational school and then upgraded to General in March 1957. We also had to pass the 3rd Radio Telephone the first year and the 2nd Radio Telephone in our last year. The FCC tests were are final exams. (No pressure at all...LOL) I wanted to make sure that I went to ET school instead of RM school so I intentionally missed every question on the CW recognition exam. I didn't go to ET school but lucked out and was assigned to AT school at Millington, TN. I might note that because the instruction was so good in my high school vocational courses that I never had to study in AT school until we got into radar principals in the final few weeks. I aced AT A School. I don't know where you went to basic but I was back in San Diego last year and all that is left of the boot camp there is the adminstrative buildings and the training destroyer escort USS Neversail. All the barracks and classrooms have been torn down and the grinders are now covered with brand new low income housing. One other note, when I was discharged I went to work for Federal Electric Corp in Paramus, NJ as a Field Engineer and my entry electronics exam for employment was waived because of my Navy electronics training. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM exK4LXU ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Rework Eliminators
Hello List: I just finished building K2 SN 5380, with no options, for a gentleman in Virginia and he chose to have me install the Rework Eliminators. This is the first of these I have installed and it sure is a nice feature and well worth the investment. Now the addition of any options will only require to removal the Unmodule and plug in the new option since all the connectors and components are already in place No more tearing the K2 apart to install the options. This is really important when it comes to removing and replacing the final transistors heat sink. Additionally I have purchased a set of the Unmodules for myself and when I get a K2 for repair I remove the options and install the unmodules and then make sure the K2 is working properly as a basic transceiver and then it is easy to add back on option at a time. This sure helps in locating problems in a transceiver. I strongly recommend the use of these after market products if you plan to add options to your K2 in the future. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM K2 SN: 18 K2 Field Tester ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] A question about low sensitivity
Joe: I suggest that you check the installation of C6 the 4.7 pf disc located on the very back of the board between L1 and L2. This capacitor shouold be installed so that there is an empty hole between the two leads. You actually install it in a spot for a jack that is installed if you install the 60Meter Module. Many guys install this capacitor on the two holes closest to the left edge of the board and when you do there is no coupling capacitor connected between L1 and L2. Re: [Elecraft] K2 IF Alignment question
Symptom: In aligning the IF Amp on K2 #5091, I am not hearing any signal strength variation when adjusting L34 per the instructions on pg. 62. The weak signal near 7000 khz is relatively loud but moving the slug doesn't result in any variation that I can hear. I can peak signals with L1 and L2 for the 40m bandpass alignment. And actual band signals seem the same signal strength when compared to an ICom 746. All resistance test readings and all other alignment tests are within range. Guy: I have built fourteen K2s and have never really seen a significant peak in the adjustment of L34. The true peak has to be observed by using an ac voltmeter connected to the audio output. If it will not null then you probably have a problem with T1. I would guess that 95% of the problems with a null function are caused by T1 problems. If it is you will see almost a one volt drop across it. and the resistance when measured with the power off will be very high. 73 Jim K4ZM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Oscilloscope
Ci: I have done both in my life time and I'll take the O'scope problem any day...LOL You need to set the scope in the auto trigger mode and adjust the sweep speed to a speed that will show you pretty much a solid wide band across the screen when connected to the test point. You need to adjust the input attenuator to the expected voltage range and then measure the nimber of divisions the wide bad covers on the screen. It is easy to do if you set the bottom of the band to a large line and then read how many large boxes it covers and what part of another. Then take that number and multiply it times the volt/div setting on the input attenuator scale. You can reduce the attenuator to produce the largest display without filling the screen completely...The result will be the Peak to Peak voltage of the signal at that point. It really helps if you have another unit that is working that you can compare signals with. One other note some probes are attenuated by 10 times if this is the case you need to multiply the first product by 10... At least while using the ocsope the windshield is not covered with St. Elmo's FireLOL 73 Jim K4ZM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] (no subject)
Paul: How big is the wire you are using to connect the power supply to the K1. It sounds like you have either too small a conductor for the cable or else a bad connection in the plug at the power supply or the K1. Switch the K1 display to read the battery voltage and record it. Then key the rig and see what the battery voltage reads and record it. My guess is that there will be a very large voltage drop in the order of a couple of volts which will indicate a bad connecting cable. Also monitor the voltage out of the power supply with the meter connected to the power supply output terminals in the receive and transmit modes. One other thing, are you making this test using the tune mode? If so the power is reduced when in the tune mode by the software for the antenna tuner. This might be your problem too. Try reading the output with the power set to 5 watts and use the key not the tune switch on the K1 to key the K1. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM K2 SN: 18 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft or Witchcraft???
Sounds like you might have a bad hetrodyne crystal on 40 meters. If you have a general coverage receiver tune it to the oscillator frequency and see if you hear a strong carrier when you move the antenna near the crystals on the filter board. If not you may have a bad crystal or a bad solder connection on the relays that switch then in and out. Next look at the solder connections on the filter board very closely. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] SSB Removal
Dan: Don't forget to install jumpers in J9 J10 (Pin 1 to 3). I removed some pins from an old computer motherboard nd made jumpers that fit J9 J10 and connects a 0.001 cap between J11 (Pin 7 12). I do this all the time when building a K2 so that I do not have to rewire it when installing the KSB2. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 SN:4761
Hello List: K2 SN: 4761, my fourteenth K2 to build, has passed Part II testing and working great like all K2's. Now on to complete the last Part and install all the accessories that have already been built. Johnny, KD4ORO, the owner, will be operating it by the middle of next week for sure. Only minor glitch was a broken miniature 100mh RFC in the VCC line to the PLL Chip. Strange in that the PLL locked up fine but was jumpy when tuning and then would settle down and be fine when tuning was stopped. Discovered a 0.7 volt drop across the choke and so replaced it with a jumper and it stablized. Was lucky enough to have one in my Elecraft parts supply and replaced it and all is well. Back to the work bench. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] K2 TX alignment problems continue
Neal: How sure are you that the wattmeter is reading correctly? What scale are you using to read the output on and are you operating the radio into a dummy load or an antenna? Also where are you measuring the 0.8 volt drop? That sounds like a pretty big drop in voltage with only 2.2 amps of current. One word of note - I have built thirteen K2's and have never seen one that would produce 19 watts output at any setting of the power control or any band. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Insatll SSB and things go dead - question
Tim: Install a scrap resistor lead or piece of solid hookup wire from pin 1 to pin 3 on J9 and J10 and install a 103 Cap from pin 7 to pin 12 of J 11 and you will be back to what you had before... I would bet you have a problem on the SSB board. I had this on one SSB generator and it was either RFC1 or RFC2 that was shorting out to the crystal housing. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM K2 SN: 18 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K1 on a sailboat
Mike: I operate my K2 on a 48' St. Francis Catamaran (The Quantum Leap) that I crew. For an antenna I use a 40 meter center fed dipole fed with 300 twin lead and terminate it in a LGP 4:1 Balun and run about 20 feet of RG58 to the K2. I install it as a sloper from the top of the mast by connecting it to the Spinnaker halyard and pull that end to the top of the mast. (note: Be sure to attach a downhaul line to the halyard to be safe so that if the antenna breaks you can still pull the halyard back down and don't have to climb the mast.) I attach the bottom end of the dipole to the safety railing on the bow. I use another piece of small line attached to the balun to keep the twin lead at 90 degrees from the dipole and attach it to the safety rail at midship. I open a hatch in the salon area and drop the RG58 through and connect it to the rig on the table in the salon. I can take it down or set it up in about 5 minutes and using the KAT2 in the K2 it tunes all bands 40 -10 to a 1:1 SWR and receives and radiates very well. The antenna is made out of a 33' length of AC zip cord that was split and the insulators are pieces of plexiglass and I use light weight cord on the ends of the insulators..The whole antenna when coiled up can almost fit in a box the size of your K1. The center insulator has two 8-32 screws and nuts and a wing nut on each one so that I can attach the 300 ohm twin lead. The dipole leads stay attached to the center insulator all the time. By the way I used this antenna while motoring due to no wind on the way from St. Lucia to George Town, Bahams and checked into the Maritime Mobile Net running 10 watts and they had no problem hearing me. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM K2 SN:18 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] KS PLL Reference Oscillator
John: Have you used a seperate freq counter measure the freq or a general coverage receiver to listen to the freq at both hi and lo setting to make sure you dont see a steady signal?...Also can you adjust the votage at R30 to the value called for in the manual? My freq counter transistors amplified but not enough to drive the input of the counter at the higher freq and the result was what appeared to be a frequency jumping all over the place. I discoveered the PLL was in lock and the freq steady and in range by using a general coverage receiver to listen to the PLL output. About the only thing that could cause that is one or two of the Varicap Diodes of the wrong type installed in the PLL circuit or a wrong capacitor. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM K2 SN 18 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 #4039 Headphone Socket - Replacement needed, UK supplier?
Nicolas: I have had two K2's sent to me for replacement of the headphone jack and on both units I found that they were not soldered properly. They both had worked for several months and then became intermittent. I soldered the connections again and let the solder flow into the connections and both of the units no longer had a problem with the jack not working. The leads out of the socket are not long enough to extend out on the bottom side of the board so installing the jack requires that you take a little longer to solder each connection so that the solder will wick down to the jack pin. You might try reheating the connections on the bottom of the board and add solder to let it flow into the connection. My K2 is serial number 18 and the jack still functions fine. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 #4520 up and running...
Peter: I would look in the area of the Low Pass Filter section or the Bandpass filter section. A quick check of the low pass can be done on RX by connecting the antenna to the rf out jack and then moving it to W1. If the signal level increases then the problem is in the Low Pass Filter section. A good test of the Bandpass filter is to look at the RF voltage on the base of Q5 in the tune mode on a good band and then on a bad band and see if the level is way down as compared to a good operating band. Check solder connections on K5 and K6 and K11. All other sections of the radio are functioning if it works on other bands, Also make sure that C33 is installed in the correct holes. If I were a betting man I would bet on the Low Pass Filter circuit that is common to those two bands.. (L23, L24, C218-222) Good Luck 73 Jim Younce K4ZM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] K1 on USB CW
John: In 1959-1961 I was in the US Navy and stationed at NAS Norfolk, Va. I lived in the ham shack of W4NPT and ran many phone patches on 20 meter SSB for HZ1AB a US Air Force base in Saudi Arabia. Our SSB rig was a Central Electronics 20A with the Command Set VFO, an HQ-170 Receiver, a Johnson Viking Courier Linear Amplifier and a Mosley TA-33 triband antenna.. One evening I received a phone call from the state department requesting that I run a phone patch for a high ranking offical of the Saudi government who was in the US with his daughter who was having surgery. The night of the scheduled patch I established contact with HZ1AB about 15 minutes before the schedule and checked out all the equipment. They were very strong into Norfolk at 2AM. When the call came from the state department we were all ready and started the phone patch. About 5 minutes into the phone patch I looked up to see that my Johnson Courier linear was on fire. Flames were coming out of the top of the cabinet. I stopped the phone patch and ran for a CO2 fire extinguisher to put out the fire. After I got the flames out I removed the linear from the operating position and sat it on the floor behind me. I was really worried about botching the phone patch that the state department deemed so important. So I connected the antenna directly to the output connector of the 20A and tuned it up. I called HZ1AB and asked how he copied and he repiled you seem to have the problem resolved because your 20db over S-9. We finished the phone patch in about 15 mor3e minutes with no problems and after I had hung up with the state department I told HZ1AB I was using the 20A barefoot and he could not believe it. I was running QRP and enjoying it before it became fashionalble.Hi Hi. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM K2 SN: 18 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft You must subscribe to post.
