Re: [Elecraft] PX3 kit tips?

2021-10-01 Thread Julia Tuttle
Hi folks,

My PX3 is up and running! The manual was a delight to follow, and
everything went together swimmingly. Thanks for all the tips -- I had
everything small neatly laid out in an egg carton, and assembling this was
probably the most peaceful hour of my day.

Here is a lousy phone picture of the finished product:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/NsXTLNo2zZPcuM4p9

One question: I performed the sideband nulling procedure, and found that my
ideal phase values were similar to the factory ones, but that my ideal
amplitude values were consistently about 25 lower than the factory ones. Is
this indicative of an issue with my equipment, build, or calibration? Or is
it within the expected range of calibration values?

Thanks and 73,

Julie

Do a complete inventory of all parts before you begin. It isn’t unusual for a
small piece or two to go astray.

Simply call Elecraft and they’ll send it to you. Though it may be a little
slower than in the past with the challenges of late.

Most important- have fun!

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 kit tips?

2021-09-30 Thread Bill Frantz
Remember to take it slow and easy. Read each instruction and
make sure you understand it. Then do it, check it off on the
assembly manual, and go to the next one.

It is generally a good idea to inventory the parts so you
understand which screw goes where. The small parts can be
organized in an egg carton or a ice cube tray.

Try to get into the zen of it.

Nothing to it, you will be done in no time. The right size screwdriver helps.
Also try not to get fingerprints on the screen side of the lens. Taking the

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 Fuse Issue

2021-03-23 Thread Alan Bloom

The PX3 should draw no more than about 200 mA from the 12V supply.

When power is first applied, there will be some inrush current due to
the filter capacitors but I'm surprised that's enough to blow a 1A fuse.

Is it a fast-blow type fuse?  Perhaps a slow-blow type would solve the
problem.

[Elecraft] PX3 keyboard fix

2020-10-06 Thread KG7WGX
I bought a GMYLE Mini USB keyboard a while ago and tested it with the PX3 and
it worked. Then I put it aside and concentrated on my Morse speed and
learning to use a bug.Today it didn't show the "K" when I connected it.
However, it did connect if the USB plug was pulled out around 1/16".I
applied a narrow band of heat-shrink to the USB plug and now I get a firm
connection, but the plug cannot be inserted far enough to disconnect.I don't
know if this was "tolerance stacking" and a special case or if it might
apply to other USB keyboards. If you are having intermittent connection
problems with a USB keyboard, you could try this before buying a different
keyboard.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 signal artifact - still seeking a solution

2020-07-22 Thread Philip Alley via Elecraft
Jim,

This sounds a lot like a problem I was experiencing with my KX3 while operating
FT8. I was getting pulsating noise on the signal sent to the KX3 from my
MacBook Pro laptop. I tried all the suggestions including bonding the computer
and putting ferrites on all signal and power leads with no improvement. I
finally noticed that Elecraft KXUSB cable connected from PX3 to the laptop for
rig control has an LED which blinks at a rate (almost exactly once per second)
with corresponds to the noise heard.

On the MacBook Pro I was using a port adapter which allows connecting a HDMI
cable, a USB cable and an apple Lightning power cable to one of the 4 USB-C
(Lightning) ports on the laptop. By simply moving the power cable from the
adapter to a separate port the noise completely disappeared. Since you mention
that your foul signal disappears when you disconnect the USB cable from your
laptop I suspect you may be suffering the same problem. In my case, apparently
when the LED pulses some of the power supply noise is coupled into the USB port
and contaminates the signals. I was worried about transmit signals and did not
see if any artifacts were showing on the PX during receive.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 signal artifact - still seeking a solution

2020-07-22 Thread Howard Hoyt

Hi Grant,

The shield only shields electrostatic fields and does not shield the
magnetic field from the inner conductors.  If the garbage is on the USB
signal lines and common mode (likely), the ferrite will still be
effective.  If the RFI is transverse (or differential) mode, then the
external fields from those signal conductors will largely cancel and
ferrite will have little or no effect.

BTW, Pro Audio Engineering is a first-line Fair-Rite dealer and we have
good stock on many mix 31 parts at good prices in small quantities.

Cheers & 73,
Howie / WA4PSC
www.proaudioeng.com

If the cable is shielded, and the garbage is on the PC's USB signal lines,
an external ferrite won?t do any good. I don?t know if the cable is
shielded or not, but if it is, then the garbage may not be on the shield
? and perhaps the USB isolator might be worth a try. Maybe.
I don?t know anything about that device ?

Hi Grant,

See my earlier post in this thread and the reference cited -- the
problem is that the noise is NOT differential mode (inside the cable),
it's common mode, and often on the shield, due to its improper
termination inside the box.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 signal artifact - still seeking a solution

2020-07-21 Thread David Herring
Jim,

Having percolated on this for a while longer, another thought comes to mind.
You mentioned that you tried a ferrite snap-on on the USB cable. In order to
really be effective, the USB cable would best be tightly wrapped around the
sides of the snap-on in something of a serpentine or sequential fashion, not
just randomly coiled up like a garden hose. I don’t know the specifics of how
you did it, but I mention this in case you did the garden hose method
originally…in that instance it would be a worthy exercise to rework your choke,
wrapping it properly and seeing if that then makes a difference.

Also, it’s not unheard of to need multiple snap-ons with multiple turns each to
get enough impedance to choke out the unwanted signal. Especially if you can’t
get 6 to 8 passes through the center of a single snap-on.

Oh, and once you get the snap-on wound, it’s highly recommended to cinch down a
zip tie around the circumference to ensure that both ends of the ferrite
material inside are making good contact with each other. If there’s the
slightest gap, the thing won’t work worth squat.

Hope that helps, and that at least one of these suggestions you’ve been getting
on the reflector solves your artifact issue. ;-)

Do artifacts disappear when you have USB cable connected to the laptop but
disconnected from PX3?
Perhaps the USB cable acts like an antenna.

For RFI transmitted via USB cable, try USB isolator. E.g.,

Jim,

There is grounding, bonding and choking. You’ve tried grounding and choking,
it may be time to try bonding.

Try bonding the PC to the rig with the shortest run practical of either large
copper wire or braid. See if that has an effect on the artifact.

Also, did the choking reduce the strength of the artifact at all?

I have learned a lot from and thus recommend the papers on grounding, bonding
and choking from Jim Brown, K9YC. http://k9yc.com/publish.htm

[Elecraft] PX3 displaying artifacts...

2020-06-20 Thread Robin via Elecraft
I have tried this with two KX3’s with the same result.

When connecting a PX3 to a KX3 and there is no antenna, the flat signal on the
PX3 has some artifacts. The highest being where the KX3 unit is placed and then
2 to 3 on each side symmetrically of decreasing amplitude. This means that when
you scroll the VFO for a signal it appears as if you are always on a signal!

Usinbg the same PX3 on another KX3 I get the same.

Unless KX3 rigs are sensitive to some local noise (compared with a K3 where
there are no artifacts on a P3) then it may be the PX3 itself, but what is the
adjustment to cancel this? Any clues or suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 Display During Transmit

2020-05-19 Thread Grant Youngman
Sorry. Was in the middle of something, and had a brain f*rt.

Anyway, no, works the same — the spectrum continues to be displayed (frozen) in
the bandwidth window with the cursor. It does not disappear.

I’m on the latest firmware. If there’s a menu function that would affect that
(can’t imagine why), I’m unaware of it.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 Display During Transmit

2020-05-19 Thread AL7CR
On the PX3 a solid green band displays the current bandwidth of the RX filter.
While receiving the spectrum is displayed over this block. When I go to TX the
spectrum on top of the green filter display disappears and only the green
filter block is displayed. The spectrum outside of the filter block is frozen
and displays as normal. When I return to RX the spectrum displays over the
green filter block again.

I can not imagine how the KX3 / PX3 connections could have anything to do with
this behavior. Could it possibly be a bug introduced with the latest firmware
or perhaps due to some combination of menu settings?

Not sure what you mean by “current filter display” — on the PX3 (?). The PX3
works exactly like the P3 — during transmit, the PX3 display freezes in place.
Nothing is covered by a solid color. I’ve never seen it do what I think you are
describing.

Have no idea why that might be happening. Have you checked the connections

[Elecraft] PX3 Display During Transmit

2020-05-19 Thread AL7CR
On my P3 connected to my K3S when I transmit the display is frozen and shows
the last spectrum.

I just noticed that on my PX3 connected to my KX3 that during transmit the
current filter display covers the spectrum with a solid color.

This does not matter much but I prefer how the P3 operates. I did not see
anything about this in the manual. Is there a way to get it to operate like
the P3 and is this normal?

[Elecraft] PX3-KX3 display question

2020-05-18 Thread Daniel M. Kruss
My KX3-PX3_KXPA100 system works perfectly, however I cannot understand the PX3
display. On either USB or LSB there is a significant, narrow signal spike
which tracks the KX3 frequency. On either USB or LSB it is at the edge of the
cursor where the carrier (suppressed) would be. There is no tone as I tune
across it and it does not interfere with operation. The waterfall does show a
narrow trail. If I change the XFIL from FL1 to FL2 then the spike moves to the
center of the new, narrower passband. On CW it is in the middle of the passband.

Is this spike normal or am I setting something incorrectly? I can send photos,
if needed.

Thanks,

Dan K9GDQ

I'll second Grant on Novus. I bought their 7100 kit from Amazon, and a set

The Novus 7100 kit is about $22 at Amazon:

The “standard” that many other radio restorers use, and I use, is Novus
Plastic Polish. It comes as a set of two abrasive level liquids and a fine
polish. On some tough problems I've successfully used a product called
Micro-mesh … which is a set of cloth/paper abrasives in increasingly fine
grits. Usually use Novus, though, unless it's a really deep scratch.

Novus is sold on-line by Walmart, tubesandmore.com, and other places. The
other obvious option is just to purchase a new acrylic face from Elecraft if
it’s a major deep scratch.

Meguiar's Mirror Glaze MGH-17.

I have used it on aircraft and other transparencies. Deep scratches may
require work with increasingly fine abrasives. MGH-17 will remove the marks

[Elecraft] PX3 display artifact caused by Elecraft USB cable

2020-04-11 Thread James Smallwood via Elecraft

Hello - I recently purchased a PX3 to support my QRP contesting efforts and am
really glad I did. It really helps streamline S during contests.

However, when I plug a brand new Elecraft-provided USB cable for connecting the
PX3/KX3 into my two-year old HP Pavilion PC, a 3-4db artifact appears on the
PX3 display. No audio is associated with this artifact but it's distracting
when viewing the PX3 display.

I'm certain the cable is the source of the issue because once the USB cable is
unplugged the artifact disappears.

Can anyone suggest a resolution, or is this a known issue?

Thanks for taking time to consider this.

[Elecraft] PX3 for locating ft8 interference?

2020-01-13 Thread Tox
I've been using a kx3 to play with ft8. Finding intermittent severe
QRM is rendering it deaf to due desense. (Signals that are coming in
at -5 disappear from the waterfall when the source fires.)

The waterfall in WSJT-X is only really useful for a few kHz of view,
and I suspect that if the interference is notchable, it is outside
that passband.

Would the PX3 still give a full 200kHz of view to help with (maybe)
adding a notch useful for being able to then hear ft8?

I do have RTL-SDR, and Kerberos SDR, but haven't set them up for fear
of blowing out the front end when transmitting, haven't found an
equivalent to the MFJ autosensing TR switch that is solid state and
can withstand 100w of transmit.

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Hello Grant,

The waterfall height range adjustment is from 20-139, with 100 as the default.
With height set to 139, slightly more than 1/2 the display is waterfall — maybe
60%

At that height it takes about 10-11 seconds for a signal to move to the bottom
of the display

This statement surprises me, because the manual says for the menue "Waterfall" the default

Does that mean 100% of the half display height?

[Elecraft] [PX3] Waterfall

2019-10-18 Thread Ingo Meyer, DK3RED

Dear Elecrafters,

I intend to buy a PX3. But I still have a few technical questions.

The manual says "[DISP] toggles between the spectrum, and combination spectrum/waterfall
display modes." Is it possible to increase the height of the waterfall to 100%, so the
spectrum height is zero?

If the waterfall is increased to 100% height (if possible), how long does it take for a
signal on the waterfall to reach the bottom from the top?

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 Keyboards

2019-08-24 Thread Gwen Patton
I got 2.4ghz Amazon Basics keyboard for it. I tried a wired keyboard, and
while it was a nice keyboard, RF kept getting into the keyboard buffer no
matter what I did. I tried toroids, chokes, you name it. It'd start shoving
spurious noise into the character stream, keeping it from finishing in PSK
or CW mode. When I switched to a 2.4ghz model, it works perfectly. Don't
use Bluetooth, as there's no way to enter the pairing code, so it won't
work.

This is the one I got: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0787G1YFG

Don’t know what happened to the list. Keyboard models change so frequently it
probably got to be a mess to keep up with it.

This Logitech is a Bluetooth keyboard. Last I saw something about it,
bluetooth wouldn’t work because it needed a PC BIOS to make the connection.

I use an Anker 2.4GHz wireless keyboard that works fine. It comes with the
wireless/USB adapter that stores in the keyboard battery compartment. There
are several types of these around.

[Elecraft] PX3 Cursor with KXPA100

2019-08-19 Thread Grant Youngman
So it's normal, I guess, that every new user of a product “rediscovers" some of
its unique characteristics.

I rediscovered the issue of the effects of the KXPA100 on PX3 cursor behavior,
making it twitchy and jumpy. Since there has been previous discussion of a fix
that Elecraft chimed in on, but there’s been no fix, I assume it may be a
hardware/processing limitation, either of the KX3 or PX3.

To ameliorate the issue, I’ve added PA Mode ON/OFF functions as macros in the
PX3 (since it isn’t an issue when the PX3 doesn’t come along on an outing).
Saves digging into KX3 menus to change the PA status and is certainly quicker.

PA Mode ON:  MN146;MP001;MN255;PC080;
PA Mode OFF:  MN146;MP000;MN255;PC010;

(I change power settings as well, YMMV).

Still — it would be nice if there were a way to solve the underlying problem
without waiting for the KX4 :-)

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 problems

2019-05-06 Thread Bill Frantz

An update:

I got the PX3 utility communicating with the PX3 after rebooting
my Mac (which didn't help), and swapping the USB<--->RS232 cable
between the two USB ports on the Mac, which fixed the problem.

I have put screen shots from the PX3 on my DropBox

showing normal operation and both the vertical and horizontal smearing.

It seems I can fix the vertical smearing by holding the AVERAGE
button and then exiting.

If no one has any ideas, I'll bug support.

Vertical smearing. It acts as if once a signal is displayed on

if I change bands on the KX3.

Horizontal smearing. It acts as if the signals on the
waterfall are being modulated by a weak signal so the they get
wider. This widening makes a CW signal about 3 times wider.
This issue comes and goes with no obvious cause/relation to
other things.

Any thoughts? Any fixes?

Subject: [Elecraft] PX3 LCD cover cleaning

I've got dust under the plexiglass LCD cover on my PX3. Since the 4 screws
hold the circuit board to the front of the PX3, I'm wondering if taking
those off to remove the PX3 plexiglass will cause the board to fall off the
back of the front into the box? I can't remember if the side jacks will hold
the board in place or not. I know it's a trivial process to open it up, but
I'd prefer not to just to wipe some dust off the back of the plexiglass.

I've built a KX3, a KPA500 and most of a K3 and am worried about the PX3
main board falling off the front of the enclosure...

[Elecraft] PX3 - USB thumb drive issues

2019-02-24 Thread Mike Parkes
I am having problems getting the PX3 to work with a thumb drive for
screenshot captures. I had one smaller thumb drive (32MB?) that the PX3
would mount but wouldn't save screenshots too. So I figured maybe the thumb
drive was bad and bought another one. This one locks up the PX3 or causes
the px3 to run extremely slow. This is a brand new thumb drive 128 GB size.
Is it the size that is choking the px3? Should I buy a smaller one, is
there a recommended size? The PX3 manual states nothing about what the
thumb drive requirements are to get it to work.
Thanks, 73's Mike AB7RU

Ok, try holding the menu/labels button at the lower right of the px3 to

I use my PX3 on a sailboat in a go-kit and frequently sit out in the
cockpit with the PX3-KX3 and a Raspberry PI 7" touch screen (and RPI of

But the PX3 can get bright enough for me. It does consume more power of

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 Select knob not changing KX3 freq

2018-11-26 Thread Grant Youngman
It’s not quite clear what you’re trying to do.

The SELECT knob on the PX3 is not just an auxiliary tuning control. So if
you’re twirling the knob and expect the frequency to change, it won’t. You can
turn on say Marker A, and use the SELECT knob to move the marker. That by
itself won’t do anything but move the marker. But then, if you PRESS the knob,
the frequency will change to match the marker.

But it is not just a tuning control …

[Elecraft] PX3 Select knob not changing KX3 freq

2018-11-26 Thread Mike Parkes
I just finished putting together a new PX3 from kit, and have it connected
to the KX3. Everything seems to be working, signals from the KX3 are
showing up, and changing the KX3 vfo changes the displayed freq on the PX3.
However, the SELECT knob on the PX3 is *not *changing the displayed freq on
either device. Thanks for any help!

Hi John,

Reliability of the PX3 front panel circuit board and LCD is extremely high
(ditto with the P3). We do get an occasional request for LCD replacement,
usually after the PX3 has been operated portable and sustained damage in
transport.

The bezel (~$21 replacement cost) usually takes the brunt of the damage.
If a new LCD is required, it's ~$100. Replacement instructions can be
found in the PX3 Owners Manual.

I don’t think we’ve ever had to replace an entire PX3 front panel module.
We could repair it in virtually any scenario short of grizzly attack.

I called them and we did some troubleshooting of the issue.

I'm sending it back to them today. It's most likely a bad screen that will

I was able to do every band except 50Mhz.
On 50 I was not able to get any change at all. The other bands nulled fine.
Is there a factory setting I can use on 50Mhz?
Tnx,

[Elecraft] PX3 computer interface to KX3

2018-04-26 Thread Bill Frantz
I'm sitting in New Hampshire and I find I can't get my computer
to talk to the KX3 when it goes through the PX3 using the
ACC1-PC jack. The computer can talk to the KX3 when plugged in
directly to ACC1 jack on the KX3, and the PX3 can get the
frequency data when plugged into the same jack.

I have the same problem with both wsjt-x and RUMlogNG, so I
don't think the problem is in the computer software. The USB
<--> RS232 seems to be working, so I suspect the PX3.

Does anyone have any suggestions for something to fix to get
both the computer and the PX3 to talk to the KX3? (I'm low on
test equipment here, but I do have a DVM.)

Thanks - Bill AE6JV

[Elecraft] PX3 reset....

2018-04-24 Thread Tom Francis, W1TEF

Greetings,

Apparently I can't read owner manuals correctly.  I'm trying to reset my
PX3 to

factory specs and I don't seem to be accomplishing that.

I'm probably missing something, but could somebody tell me what I need
to do.

(I need to do this because I've hopeless messed up the display and I
can't seem

to get it back to where I want it - resetting it is the best option).

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 Green Cursor Bar Color Inverting

2018-04-24 Thread Alan
The cursors look different depending on mode (CW, SSB, various digital,
etc.) And the mode setting is stored per band. So probably it's just
that different bands are set for different modes.
