Re: [Elecraft] USB sound card recommendation for KX3
Once you have selected your soundcard and get ready to set the audio levels, you may want to refer to the article on my website www.w3fpr.com. Scroll to the last article on the left column and click the link. You must set the KX3 (or K3 or K3S or KX2) for 4 bars solid on the ALC display with the 5th bar flashing. Most internet advice does not work for Elecraft radios. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/14/2018 10:54 AM, Walter Underwood wrote: On Sep 14, 2018, at 6:08 AM, rick jones via Elecraft wrote: I'm looking for a USB sound "dongle" that will interface with my KX3 for FT8 and similar modes. Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Card
Yes. Also once any potential driver issue is rectified and the sound card is installed remember EXACTLY which USB port you plugged it into and use the same port always. Even though the driver is installed if you disconnect and reconnect to a different port Windows will see it as a new device and start the driver dance again. Unless plug and pray has gotten a whole lot better (I doubt it). Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Card
I use a U7 with the KX3 and HDSDR. There is an issue with the initialization of the 24 bit drivers. I have set up for 24 bits, 192 kHz and line in using the Asus software, and 24 bits and 192 kHz in Windows control panel. When I turn the computer on and use HDSDR for the first time I have to do the following: Start up HDSDR and select Start. In HDSDR switch to 16 bit drivers. In HDSDR switch back to 24 bit drivers. In HDSDR select bandwidth and switch the output bandwidth to 192 kHz and back to 12 kHz for the small waterfall. The input remains 192 kHz. In HDSDR close the bandwidth box. In HDSDR hit Stop and then Start After all that it works until the computer is shut down or the computer sleeps. If the computer sleeps, in HDSDR hit Stop and then Start if the spectrum is backwards (moves the wrong way when you tune) or is mirrored around the center. Other than the annoyance above, it works well. I just live with the "dance" at startup. Hope this helps 73, Mark W7MLG On Sun, Mar 6, 2016 at 6:04 PM, Don Wilhelm <w3...@embarqmail.com> wrote: > Tom, > > If the problem is only happening when the Asus U7 is the default > soundcard, then how do you deal with the tendency of the Windows operating > system to set any newly installed soundcard as the default? Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Card
The reviews on Amazon and NewEgg need to be taken with a grain of salt. The vast majority of those reviews are from people who aren't technically inclined and you get a lot of "it sounds great" reviews. If you're using this for the LP-Pan take the advice of N8LP. He knows what works with his hardware. You might think about joining the Yahoo group as well. If this is for a Windows 10 computer you may be stuck in driver "no mans land" until ASUS releases drivers. Welcome to the wonderful world Windows OS "upgrades". Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Card
I used a SignaLink for quite a few years and then I changed to a Tascam US-122 mkII. When I used the SignaLink on PSK, I had to ride the RF gain to keep the digitized audio volume within acceptable input levels. With the Tascam, I no longer need to do that. The downside of the Tascam is it requires special drivers which aren't available for ARM linux. You can get by with a minimal sound card, but there is value in a better one. 73 Bill AE6JV On 3/6/16 at 3:53 PM, w3...@embarqmail.com (Don Wilhelm) wrote: If your soundcard will be used for digital modes only, then you do not need a 'top of the line' soundcard, most any will do. --- Bill Frantz| Security is like Government | Periwinkle (408)356-8506 | services. Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Card
Tom, For many years, I used a Creative Labs E-MU 0204. The last time drivers were written for that interface was late 2014 and it is no longer in production. When I upgraded to OS X 10.11, I could not use the interface because of some changes in OS X. I purchased a Focusrite 2i2 and cannot be happier (unless I had purchased the Focusrite 6i6 for more I/O). I regularly decode JT65 and JT9 in the mid -20s. I have had at least one JT9 decode at -27 using the Focusrite. The 2i2 is available from most online big-box places for right around $150. All you will need to purchase the appropriate cables. With both the K3 (I know you said K2) and KX3, I use a 3.5 mm TRS to 1/4” T and R mono from radio out and a 3.5 mm to 1/4” mono to radio input. The Focusrite USB interfaces are red anodized aluminum and you can adjust both input from the radio and output to the radio with dials on the front. It also has a separate headphone stereo monitor that can be turned on and off with volume adjustment. The adjustments right on the front of the Focusrite make operation very easy. 73, Joel - W4JBB > On Mar 6, 2016, at 16:51, Tom Fieldwrote: > > I’ve looked at the L-pan site and they recommend the ASUS USB sound cards. > Reviews on Amazon and NewEgg are pretty negative. Re: [Elecraft] USB sound card for KX3 I/Q
A sound card for digital modes is mono and and bandwidth 10 Khz or so. For I-Q data processing for spectrum display, stereo is required and much greater bandwidth. Signal link USB is not usable for I-Q data. Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Card for Win7
Phil, It looks like I can't play audio through my iMic using Win7 either. I got a good indicator that my boom Mic was being heard when I selected 'recording devices' and made the iMic mic the default device. (I need to try to record a file and play it back.) But first, I can't hear any sound in my headset. It is the same headset I use for digital voice and the iMic with my XP computer. I see the volume indicators moving up to max in the 'volume mixer' as I play a music file, but no sound using the iMic. I tried various things to no avail. Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Card for Win7
Dick, You are almost there. It appears you got through steps 1 and 2, but you also need to do steps 3, 4,and 5 below: 1. Right click on the speaker icon on the lower right of the screen and select Playback Devices. 2. The Sound window will open. Be sure the Playback tab is selected. This is where you can select the default device. More on that below. 3. Right click on Speakers iMac USB Audio System and select Properties in the dropdown menu. 4. The Speaker Properties window will open, select the Levels tab in that window. 5. Be sure the Speakers slider is set to something greater than zero, and be sure the little speaker icon is not muted. You can leave this window open while you try to play a file; however, be sure to click on OK once the volume is set correctly. Be sure you have the headphones plugged into the Out jack of the iMac. Of course, I never make mistakes like that. ;-) If you are simply playing a file back, you must have the iMac selected as the default device in the Sound window, item 2 above. That tells your PC to send the digital sound (music) to that device, unless you tell a specific program otherwise. You do not need for it to be the default device if you are setting it up to work with a program such as FLDIGI. You will tell that program to send data to that device. In fact, you probably don't want it to be the default device so you can prevent Windows from sending your music, and every other beep and blurp that Windows makes, out over the air! That is one big advantage of using a separate soundcard for digital modes. Hope this helps. Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Card for Win7
Thanks to those who answered my post about using iMic on Win7. First let me say I tried all the things suggested with no luck. I never found anything muted or disabled. At first, nothing, then I could play sounds, but no music. It seemed that it began working after I used Quickmix to load iMic. (Actually, it showed USB audio device.) **I noticed I now had a volume slider for Windows Media Player which I did not have before. I now could play music. The slider can be seen by right clicking the speaker icon, and then selecting 'open volume mixer'. I had trouble using Quickmix on Win7 when I first tried it several months ago. I wish I could remember what the fix was. (Maybe later.) Quickmix has been working fine and is a handy utility. Thanks for your help. Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Card for Win7
I'd suggest you figure out the chipset used in the iMic, then go to the chipset manufacturer's web site and download the drivers for Win7. Usually, this is the Best Way(tm). I recently updated this machine to Win7-64, and had to dig drivers out from under a lot of rocks. For integrated devices, the Samsung web support page was helpful. But for outboard, you'd want to address the issue with the manufacturer of the external devices. Generally, this comes down to the chipset used. The iMic manufacturer should have a handle on this too, but I suspect that's the first place you looked. Win7-32 and -64 have been around long enough now that locating drivers and support software / utilities should be do-able, albeit a pain in the neck sometimes. 73, matt W6NIA On Wed, 12 Jun 2013 20:57:56 -0700, you wrote: I'm sure that this has come up before so please bear with me. [Elecraft] USB Sound Card for digital modes.
Rich told me he was having trouble sending this to the reflector but it is such valuable advice and works so well I want to share it with the group. I find even the DUPE warnings now come on the main computer speaker even while sending PSK31 on the USB sound card. My IMD meter reads -29 to -33 so that is working well and my water fall looks just perfect like I have not seen since back when I ran Windows 98 Second Edition. Thanks again to everyone that helped me. I hope to work you in some of the upcoming contests. 73 Ken W0CZ Rich's direction follow Ken In windows Vista and 7, I set the main sound card as the default soundcard. It can also be done in XP but is a PITA. Then in HRD or MIXW2, select the correct sound device. With Vista you are stuck with the volume settings you had as only the default sound card volume sliders show up, but I found this workable. To change in Vista you need to make the sound card for the rig default to change volume settings, they will not link to mix unless default, (I set mine for mid range and then did the rest from the rig) Once you get the proper volume setting make the main sound card default and all should work (don't forget to reset the settings in MixW if changed.) I did not have to do this with Windows 7, as the slider is visible for all sound devices. Make sure that the sound card for the rig is not set as the default Sound card. It appears to me that Windows 7 can have two (or more?) default sound cards. This can be done from control panel/sound/... I do not recall this in Vista or XP. MIXW and HRD will see the sound card even though it is not default, but you must select it manually as it will go the default otherwise. Only need to do this once unless you change cards. For MIXW go to Configure/Sound device settings, then select the correct soundcard in the top three windows. HRD can be changed similarly. [Elecraft] USB Sound Card for digital modes.
Hi from Ken I put Windows7 on my computer and for the most part everything is working well but now I got around to using PSK31 and have a problem. The waterfall will show a signal for just a couple of seconds but then the signal goes away. I thought I had it fixed by turning off the noise reduction feature in Windows7 but now as I try to use it I notice that the signal input drops off just as though there is an auto gain feature that holds the audio too low for the digital programs to work properly. I can increase the gain in either the computer or the K3 but after about 2 seconds the gain drops off. My question is what USB sound card works best and if I change to a USB sound card will it work the way the old Windows sound cards worked or will I still be up against the new AGC action. Thanks in advance for any advice I get. 73 Ken W0CZ w...@i29.net __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Card for digital modes.
I am using Windows 7 and use the US Interface NAVIGATOR. It has a built in soundcard tailored for digital modes; additionally, the drivers work with Windows 7. What is nice with any of the external USB interfaces is you only need one cable to your computer (USB). All the other connections are between the radio and the interface. Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Card for digital modes.
There is no problem with any well designed USB soundcard. You will need to open the Windows 7 mixer (right click the speaker icon) and set the correct properties for that soundcard recording mixer. It may also be necessary to open the recording devices and set he properties for the device you use. Vista and Windows 7 operate the same way ... they no longer allow an application to have master control over a sound device. Don't be fooled other advice to use an amateur specific device. All of the low cost devices use variations of the same chip (TI PCM29xx) and all use the generic USB Sound driver (USB Audio CODEC) built into the operating system. There are plenty of reasons to use a dedicated USB sound device for amateur operations. Some designed specifically for amateur use have good operational enhancements and a very few take special care with low noise inputs but the drivers are all bog standard with Windows. 73, ... [Elecraft] USB Sound Card for digital modes.
Hi. to the group. Thanks to the several people that sent me hints about my problems. I put several of the letters together and came up with a solution that works well for me. I bought the Creative Sound Blaster X-FI-GP SB1100 and it is now working just like I was used to before the Windows7 upgrade. I was able to make it work by plugging it directly into the lap top but I was short of USB ports so I plugged it into the USB hub and had to find my unused USB hub power supply to have enough power to make it work there. I have the keyboard, mouse, K3 and the Sound Blaster all connected to the hub. I also had to replace the KUSB with another USB to serial coverter as the KUSB still worked on one Windows 7 computer but not on this main one. It would key the rig instead of polling the rig about once a second. I reloaded the operating system and it lasted about 2 hours and started giving me the same trouble again. So far the new USB to serial card is not giving me any trouble. Thanks for you help. 73 Ken w0cz w...@i29.net __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
