John,

The easy way is to use the Stepconf Wizard to generate a config for you. There
is a
Sherline Driver choice and a Sherline Outputs button that does all the hard
work for
you as you page through the wizard. Take a gander at the getting started guide.
It
tells you how to create a desktop shortcut for your new config after you get
done
with the wizard.

My Sherline mill will not run whwn I select Sherline as the driver type. I have
to use OTHER. Further along the wizard you again select the output to be
Sherline and that works.
I found the not in use selection for the limit switches and also had to enter
different axis movements to get the sample engraving program to run. I don't
have a bit small enough to engrave yet so I left the Z axis up off the piece
and let the x and y axis run through the controller. My first project will be
to write a program to route a coper PC board. Should I leave the steps in the
config file alone (set at 200) seeingt that I am running other rather than
the Sherline preset in driver type. I need it to be accurate of course as I
will be milling specific lengts on the PCB. Also is there a way to manualy
control one axis with out writting a program. Sort of a manual jog.

Did you read the short Getting Started Guide? It's only 27 pages long and
covers
most of what you need to know to get up and running...

The first one sets the stepper drive timing only. The second one sets the I/O
of the
parallel port card and they have nothing to do with each other. When you select
Other you should input your drive timing values.

Re: [Emc-users] New Guy help with EMC2 and Sherline Mill

2008-10-15 Thread Eric H. Johnson
John,

The first thing to do is to just see EMC in operation. Select one of the Sim
configurations, Axis and TkEMC are good choices. As the name implies these
configurations use simulated I/O, so it will not do anything as far as
controlling a machine. It will just give you a feel for what it should look
and act like when you do get you configuration running.

Then you will have to create a configuration for your machine. I don't know
whether the boot CD gives the option to save a local copy of a
configuration, which can then be edited. If so you could still do this from
the boot CD, but the better way is to install EMC to your hard drive. Since
you already have Ubuntu 8.04 installed, follow the instructions here:
http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Installing_EMC2#On_Ubuntu_8_04_u
sing_precompiled_EMC2_packages

Then you will want to find a configuration which most closely matches your
system. Stepper-inch for example is a three axis stepper system using the
parallel port. If your system uses a control board other than the parallel
port, then pick one of the configurations relative to that control board.

For more information on configuring your system, see:
http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Configuring_EMC2

Eric

You can create your own configuration file or have Stepconf do it for
you. Check here:

http://www.linuxcnc.org/docview/html//config_stepconf.html

You can start Stepconf from the same menu you start EMC.

I assume this matches your pin assignments:
(from http://www.sherline.com/8760pg.htm )
...
DB25 pin out:
1 - Input from EMC (may be ignored in other systems)
2 - X Direction
3 - X Step
4 - Y Direction
5 - Y Step
6 - Z Direction
7 - Z Step
8 - A Direction
9 - A Step
10 - NC
11 - Output to EMC (may be ignored in other systems)
12 - Output to EMC, XYZ home (may be ignored in other systems)
13 - NC
14 - Input from EMC, C1 (may be ignored in other systems)
15 - NC
16 - Input from EMC, C2 (may be ignored in other systems)
17 - NC
18-25 - Ground
...

For the items that you don't know what data to enter, the default might
be a good choice. You will likely need to adjust your settings to match
your particular setup so don't worry too much about the data you start
with. I haven't used Stepconf so others on the list can provide better
advise.
