[expert] Found joystick problem, need Modeline help

2001-06-17 Thread Ken Arromdee

Never mind, I found it. I needed to do a modprobe joydev and ns558 also

Now I'm having trouble setting video modes. xmame really requires modes such
as 320x240 to work better fullscreen.

How do I set a video mode? (Under XFree86 4.0.3.) My XF86Config contains
Modelines for various low resolution video modes including 320x240, 400x300,
and others. But nothing I can do can get any of these modes recognized by
anything (never mind xmame). If I manually add 320x240 to any Modes
lines in XF86Config-4, or if I add them in XF86Config, I still don't get
them. Also, when I do XFdrake, it doesn't see the 320x240 or other low
resolution modes. I really have little idea where even to begin.

[expert] How do I set up a joystick?

2001-06-16 Thread Ken Arromdee

I am running Mandrake 8, with fvwm2 as a window manager and no Gnome or KDE.

I'm trying to compile/run xmame and need joystick support, but can't figure out
how to get it.

harddrake shows a line for joysticks, but if I click on it nothing happens.
probing options lists no configuration tool for joysticks.

rpmdrake lists no packages that contain the string joy.

xf86cfg doesn't seem to anything useful that I can figure out (like put a
joystick section in my XF86Config-4).

I can try modprobe analog or turn on my Sidewinder and try modprobe
sidewinder. This doesn't give an error message, but doesn't do anything
useful that I can see, either.

What can I do to get a working joystick?

[expert] Getting rid of winbond message

2001-05-17 Thread Ken Arromdee

After rebooting (Mandrake 8.0) and getting a login prompt, a few seconds later
some message about Winbond appears. It seems that some background process
that is part of booting prints this message.

What prints this message? I'd like to redirect it to /dev/null or do something
with it which causes it not to print out on top of the login prompt, but I need
to find it first...

I then have to type CntRL-C to return to my usual logon screen with the
prompt, so I can log INTO KDE with startx.

I get this message 100% of the time (booting up into the console). Ctrl-C
isn't necessary for me, I can just type my login and password on top of these
messages... it seems to be some kind of background process.

[expert] Cursor problem in X?

2001-05-10 Thread Ken Arromdee

When I start up X, my cursor appears for a split second in the middle of the
screen and then moves farther right and up. What's causing this? It's only
cosmetic, but I don't like when my machine does things I didn't tell it to do.
This happens before any window manager starts. (I could tell, by adding a big
delay to my .xinitrc before starting the window manager--it still happens
immediately.)

I'm running Mandrake 8.0, XFree86 4.03, and using a Matrox G400 card. The
monitor in XF86Config and XF86Config-4 is a Generic|High Frequency SVGA,
1024x768 at 70 Hz. (But is actually running at 800x600).

Also, XFdrake doesn't work for me. I get an error modprobe: Can't locate
module serial. If I let it continue anyway and test a mode, testing modes
that I know should work (800x600, 65536 colors) cause a black screen and a
hang until the test finishes.

[expert] new VIM, odd map expansion?

2001-05-08 Thread Ken Arromdee

I'm getting an odd problem in vim (the 6.0z alpha in Mandrake 8): every time
I type the characters 16 and don't wait a few seconds between the 1 and the
6 I get a meta character instead (M-=). It behaves just like a map command
except that :map and :map! don't show anything suspicious. Also, digraphs
are off and vi-compatible mode is on.

Re: [expert] Sound is only coming out of one speaker

I have sound coming out of only one speaker. I'm using a Soundblaster AWE32
card, i believe (i did so much swapping around and now it's been awhile since
i've had to open the hood). Definately SoundBlaster, anyway, and i enabled all
the soundblaster modules when i last built my kernel. I configured it with
sndconfig awhile back. I just tried to reconfigure it with Harddrake and every
time it tried to test it, it would come back with the error: modprobe couldn't
locate isa-pnp module. Sure enough, locate isa-pnp comes up empty.

Well, I had the exact same error (with a different ISA soundcard) about modprobe
not finding isa-pnp. After some advice from here I gave up and installed the
card the old way and it worked (though sndconfig doesn't handle my card).

I suspect this is a problem with ISA soundcards in general. I can understand
not wanting to spend a lot of effort on support of a dying bus type, but
I really wish someone would fix this.

I saw your original post but i didn't see any replies. What was the advice you
received, and what does installing it the old way mean?

The advice was to forget about using Harddrake.

In this case the old way meant to:
-- pnpdump the card and put the result in /etc/isapnp.conf, uncommenting the
appropriate parts. I had already done this before (Red Hat 6) so I just got
the file from my backup.
-- put the appropriate alias and options lines in /etc/modules.conf (also
already in my backup; it was called conf.modules before)
-- run isapnp on startup. This should be automatically done already (I think
it's in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit).
-- modprobe the soundcard on startup. /etc/init.d/sound will automatically
modprobe anything named sound or midi. (It didn't do the FM chip in
the soundcard, so I had to add a line to do that, or I could have put it in
/etc/modules.)

It also turned out that on my soundcard, I had to isapnp *immediately* before
modprobe or it wouldn't work, which meant modifying /etc/init.d/sound a bit,
but you probably won't need to do that.

I haven't tried using ALSA yet.

[expert] Help needed: sound, modem

2001-05-06 Thread Ken Arromdee

I'm trying to use harddrake to install/configure my soundcard. It gives me
options of Terratec Soundsystem Base 1 and Terratec Soundsystem Base 1/
MIDI, which are ISA and using modules ad1816 and mpu401 respectively. For my
card (Shark Predator ISA with Waveblaster) it seems correct. But it doesn't
autodetect the correct port or the FM device. And the install doesn't actually
work at all. It gives an error modprobe: Can't locate module isa-pnp.

My modem is one of those hardware PCI Actiontecs. I know the kernel can't
detect them yet (had to manually modprobe). It does work when set up through
Draknet, but I get several minor annoyances: Dialup Options doesn't reread
the old configuration and I have to type in everything again each time; it
doesn't seem to configure some things (giving nonroot users permission to
connect, using a different init string, whether to redial when disconnected,
whether to log the commands sent to/from the modem); cancelling can sometimes
cause a core dump. Also, how should I start PPP? I've been using ifup
ppp0, which certainly works, but there has to be some graphical interface
that doesn't require Gnome or KDE.

Does anyone know if locate is in the distribution anywhere? (I actually
use it.)

Minor bug: The startup screen with the text logo claims I have One 850
Mhz AMD AMD Athlon Processor Processor 127M RAM. The repetition of the words
AMD and Processor make the line overflow onto the next line, ruining the logo.
(What should I do to report minor bugs like this anyway?)

Supermount seems to be causing me problems. I've gotten a kernel panic from
various combinations of mounting, unmounting, switching disks, and supermount.

[expert] questions...

2000-10-05 Thread Ken Arromdee

I don't have Mandrake right now. I do, however, have Red Hat 6.0 and am
intending to upgrade in the near future. Does anyone know:
-- If Mandrake is compatible enough with Red Hat that I can do the kind of
upgrade that keeps some configuration files.
-- If there is an upgrade option which lets me wipe out the OS while keeping
some directories such as /usr/local and my home directory. (They are not on
separate partitions. And yes, I realize this may cause some problems such as
the RPM database not knowing about any programs that are still in /usr/local).
