I cooked for Mai Mai and Dixie using a similar system. However, I froze the food in muffin pans, popped them out and bagged them. This gave me a day's meals or a serving at a time. I watch the chickens as they get near the sale by date. Frequently stores will mark them down dramatically a day or two before they have to throw them out. I have been able to get whole fryers at 49 cents a pound and chicken breasts at 79 cents a pound. The fryers produce lots of broth that I freeze in the lollipops for Mom's ferals. Nothing is wasted and all I have to do is put the chicken in a slow cooker. Being vegetarian, I prefer to cook a lot at once. My cats prefer the chicken in pieces though. The same could be done with beef or pork. I have added chopped raw veggies (the ones that are high in vitamin C) to the mixture. I am blessed with a freezer so I can pick up chicken in quantity when I find a good buy. hard-boiled eggs provide the necessary taurine.. and ground chicken/turkey can be used, and you can watch sales for them and get that quite inexpensively, too. (and those two are good for crf kitties, which is why i started using it--AND learned that the hard-boiled eggs gave enough taurine). i add brown rice to stretch the mixture, not because they need it (obligate carnivores and all that) and rarely add veggies for the same reason. however, being the silly mom that i am, i usually cook the rice in chicky broth, and something, okay mostly, add some gravy for flavor. and vitamins. mc On Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 8:03 AM, Debbie Harrison dlh1...@hotmail.comwrote: Thanks, Belinda!! I think probably the best option is to feed homemade raw, that way you know exactly what is in it. Unfortunately our rescue cannot afford it. There is premixed raw out there, but it seems to me it would be subject to the same issues as premixed commercial food of any kind. I have heard people express concern over feeding raw to immune compromised cats also. I know there is concern but Dixie thrived on Primal Raw mixed with finely chopped veggies..before the concerns appeared. Frankly, even with the concerns, I would feed her a raw diet if she was with me now. Feline Pride is a new raw food that is almost the exact homemade recipe as that at www.catnutrition.org It has been given the stamp of approval by Dr. Lisa Pierson of www.catinfo.org and also by the webmaster of the catnutrition website. Pierson has a lot of valuable info on her website about feline diseases. I used to cook for Fred, I would cook chicken legs and thighs, mostly thighs you get more meat for you money. Just cook, debone, blend it in the blender to the consistency your cats like, mine like it very blended, creamy like. I add an egg or two depending on how much I am making and I add oatmeal or rice, usually oatmeal. Then after I debone and blend the cooked oatmeal and egg together with the chicken, I add the supplements. Taurine, bonemeal, a mutivitamin, a little calcium, salmon oil and the supplements Fred needs for his CRF and mix it really well to get it all mixed in.
