Ugh. Sorry. I'm on a new computer and I'm putting up with a lot of
system defaults until I get around to loading all the software that I
prefer.

This is Apple's Mail, which comes pre-installed. I'm honestly not
sure what it's doing to the text I send. (I just hope it isn't making
HTML code out of it) I haven't yet decided whether to get back on
board with Eudora or make a jump to the Bat.

You can tweak the Composing preferences in Apple Mail to be sure of
non-HTML postings. But if I remember some of your personal preferences
for computers correctly, you might enjoy using the unix 'pine' email
application in conjunction with a GUI emailer. It comes in a standard
installer package and is very fast for scanning email before you decide
to download it to disk with Mail. I've got it setup for Safari to open
links contained in email and am piping its print command though a
formatter before it goes thru 'lp' to the printer. If you feel
comfortable dealing with it's configuration and .pinerc editing, it can
be very efficient.

I'm talking to the publisher of The Art
of Music Engraving and Processing by
Ted Ross about a reprint and I wanted to
ask the list for your input. Would you
like to see a hardcover reprint?...
new content?... or do you already have
a copy and you don't care? All thoughts
 and comments welcome!

I would be intrgued to know what is meant by new content.

I've also talked with the publisher of
Gardner Read's book Thesaurus of Orchestral
Devices about reprinting and it looks like
the price would be around $100. Any takers?
If there's sufficient interest, I'll try
 to make it available again.

I think I'd be interested, though whether I can justify spending that on a
book remains to be seen.

Well, there is something of a publishing tradition of continuing to
 use the
name of a well known author or editor, who is long dead. Prominent
 examples
of these are Webster's Dictionary, and Gray's Anatomy. Using the
 name
Ross on a second edition of a book bearing the identical title to
 the first,
and covering much the same area of inquiry, even though edited by
 someone
else, would not be outside this tradition.

As far as Ted Ross goes, I have it both in print (2 copies) and on CDrom
so I'm not interested in a reprint.

As for Gardner Read's Thesaurus, I don't know anything about the book so
it is hard to say -- mightn't you be able to talk them into a CD-rom
version for a lot less? $100 seems a bit steep.

Thanks for asking!

As it is Ted Ross's book and he's dead, as far as I'm concerned, nothing
new can be added, unless he wrote some additional material before he died.

If somebody wants to bring out a new Standards of Musical Engraving
sort of book which could incorporate Ted Ross's book as a starting
point, that is a different thing. But I would rather they just brought
a separate book, since I already have 3 copies of Ted Ross and wouldn't
want to have to purchase a 4th copy just to get new content which Ted
Ross didn't write.
