Re: [flexcoders] DataGrid

2008-07-02 Thread Rob Rusher
You are going to have to pull out your coding hat on this one.

Open the source to DataGrid.as and DataGridBase, examine the way the columns
are rendered. Then extend either the appropriate classes and override the
methods that layout the header and columns.

If I can find the time, I'll try it, but that is how you would start.

Good luck.

Re: [flexcoders] Smooth Animation with Resize or Move Effect

Have you tried setting the arguments that don't change on the Resize?

mx:Resize heightFrom=400 heightTo=400
widthFrom=300 widthTo=800/

There tends to be some jumpiness if you don't.

 So I started to create a custom component that is based on the

Another option would be to use WebORB. The more I look at what WebORB can
do, the easier it is to pick it over other servers.

We just had a WebORB presentation at our UG meeting on Tuesday. If you

 Oddly enough after the 10th client logs in, all subsequent logins

 Something else I'm missing?

 BTW, even with polling I can establish 200 connections and the server
 barely blinks except for an increase in CPU usage due to all of that
 polling.

2008-06-05 Thread Rob Rusher
For years I said that I couldn't/wouldn't switch to a Mac because I always
need to do Windows specific tasks. But, with the Intel-based MacBook Pro and
Parallels, I have install Windows XP SP3 on a separate partition and can run
the two OS in tandem.

So I've been on a Mac for a little over a year now. I love the form factor
of the machine; light and small. It is very powerful. I can test alpha/beta
software on Windows and Mac. I can do .NET development on Windows. I do
Flex/AIR development on both platforms.

I'd say that I'm fat and happy, but I only weigh a buck forty. But I'm am

The down side, Macs are a little pricey.

Simplify your code by using the mx:XML tag and set it's source property to
the path to your XML.

mx:XML id=myXML source=data/images.xml/

Your xml might look like:
images
image thumb=assets/thumb1.jpg/
...

Then reference it as myXML.image.thumb.

Re: [flexcoders] Refreshing Page

2008-02-08 Thread Rob Rusher
If you mean refresh as in clicking the browser refresh button, reloading
the application is exactly what it's supposed to do.

Your Flex application is just a SWF loaded in an HTML file. The SWF is
interacting with the user while the browser and html file do nothing. Not
completely nothing, but you should get the point.

Flex applications do not use the request/response metaphor you may be used
to with traditional web development.

Publish to a different folder than bin.
When you create a Flex project, you have the option to publish the output to
any folder you would like. The default is bin. I know that when I publish,
say directly to my web server, the folders are not recreated. Only the SWF
and HTML.

 is that whenever it does this, it also deletes the bin folder's .svn
 info, and Subversion doesn't like that.

 Is there a way to add my bin folder to SVN without Flex Builder
 deleting it at every build?

 And yes, I know that this is unnecessary, since whomever gets my
 latest from SVN can just publish their own SWF--my client just wants
 the SWFs in SVN.

At that point, it accepted them and changed Trial to Commercial. On restarting FB, it asks for them again and claimed they are invalid. Now entering them
into Help-Manage Flex Licenses also says they are invalid.I have opened a support issue with Adobe. They responded with a lot of stuff, one of which was that you shouldn't enter the dashes. Sounds crazy, but I tried it and it still claimed it was invalid.
Anyone else run into this? I wonder if it's related to either it having the beta installed first, downloading and using the release version as a trial for a while, entering the serial number in after startup instead of at startup, or some combination of the above.

You can use Flash Remoting or the Flash Gateway in CFMX or OpenAMF. I have not used OpenAMF with the AMF3, so I'm not positive that it works. I remember seeing posting that it does though.HTHRegards,

Just to be clear, you don't need FDS to use AMF3 ColdFusion's
ValueObjects, only CF 7.0.2.

I'm with you on price, though. They'll end up paying more in the end as
you
spend copious amounts of time writing ValueObject conversion code, and
debugging string vs. number conversion errors, but it's hard to justify
without someone who can clearly articulate to the client by spending
more
money up front, they'll save money in the end.

Flex 2 can utilize AMF0 or AMF3; you just set the ObjectEncoding.

CF 7.0.2 can use AMF3; anything before only AMF0.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: FDS question

2006-07-12 Thread Rob Rusher

ouch! As I wrote that email, I avoided the buzzword bingo sentence, as I was thinking data-oriented, but put it in more laymen terms. :) Although, I never said it was only of interest for real-time data. (sematics boy - my wife chimes in)
FDS does encompass more than just real-time data. Even the Data Services part of the name implies that it provides services for managing CRUD, concurrency, synchronization, etc... and I greatly appreciate that FDS does these things. If it did not provide these services, it would be called Flash Remoting, right.
:)Thanks for detailed description Steven.Humbled Laymen,Rob RusherOn 7/12/06, Steven Webster
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I'm going to step this thread all the way to the beginning
again; there was a flawed message in this thread that suggested that FDS was
only of interest for real-time data; while it's certainly true that when we're
demonstrating the power of FDS, we'll leverage real-time/collaborative examples,
let's not forget here that the FDS value proposition is much more than real-time
dashboards.

Christophe Coenraets articulated very clearly during MAX
last year, the concept of a data-oriented versus a service-oriented architecture
(I think credit is due to Matt Chotin here too); I think that is the starting
point for discussion as to whether you are going to leverage benefit from FDS in
your application architecture.

RPC services are most appropriate in an SOA
environment. You have an existing infrastructure with which you wish to
integrate, and that infrastructure presents a set of services that can be
invoked from your RIA client. That's where you'd likely make a decision to
use RPC services:

OnlineBankingService.java
 +schedulePayment( payment, date
)
 +openAccount( account )
 +requestCurrency( fromAccount, amount, currency
)
 +generatePrintableStatement( account, fromDate,
toDate )
 ...etc

If however, your service tier starts to look a lot
like:

PatientRecordService.java
 +createRecord( patient )
 +readRecord() : patient
 +updateRecord( patient )
 +deleteRecord( patient )

AppointmentService.java
 +createAppointment( appointment
)
 ...etc

Then you're services are really just defining CRUD
operations on your data-tier, and it would suggest that you have a data-oriented
architecture. You're probably also having to do a great deal of
heavy-lifting on the client, to manage relationships, to manage the fact that
you have state on the client (your client model) that has to be replicated on
the server, and you will need strategies in place to manage synchronisation and
conflict resolution between these 2 models. If you then have multiple
clients that can all access patients/appointments/etc, then you're also going to
start having to think about locking/concurrency policies, and suddenly your
services have a great deal of infrastructure work associated with them.
And I haven't even started talking about clustering, and failover, and such
enterprise requirements for a mission-critical system as you
describe.

In these scenarios, where you have a data-oriented
architecture, but where there is no real-time requirements, no
push-requirements, no collaboration (per-se - screen-sharing/etc) requirements,
there is still *tremendous* value being offered by an application architecture
that leverages data services. Flex Data Services is going to do ALL that
heavy-lifting for you. Quickly. With code written by people smarter
than me (cheap shot, don't take it).

To define the problem that was originally
stated:

Currently our thinking is to connect
to the data through web services sending XML data to a JSO file that then will
communicate with a JAVA based API back to the MySQL backend. What, if anythign
would FDS bring to the table? Still not sure how it is better than XMLbased
solution.

When I look at that problem, I see a number of moving parts
and infrastructure work that is required - yet you are in the business of
building a large-mission critical application for healthcare. FDS is going
to remove a great deal of these moving parts, and potentially offer you an
elegant architectural solution that allows you to focus on delivering a truly
effective user-experience. You can focus on creating a useful, usable and
desirable application, and you can focus on delivering a scalable, maintainable
and performant application, you can focus on delivering feature and value to the
user (and the business) rather than focus on delivering
infrastructure.

Let FDS manage your CRUD operations for you. Let FDS
manage relationships. Let FDS manage synchronisation between your client
and server models. Let FDS manage concurrency, and locking and conflict
resolution. Let FDS manage how all that jazz works in a clustered app
server environment. Let FDS make your integration to your MySQL database a
walk in the park.

I'd seriously recommend that you (the general you here)
spend some time

OK I have been playing with flex for a couple of weeks
now and we are planning on
building out a rather large application in flex. The application is going to
replace several
current apps one of wich is web based the rest are not.

I am trying to get my head around the whole FDS thing. Our product will be a
medical
database. There are currently several different modules within the existing
apps. The way
I was planning this, each one would become its own flex app. the reason for
this is to try
and keep the swf file size somewhat reasonable.

Currently our thinking is to connect to the data through web services sending
XML data to
a JSO file that then will communicate with a JAVA based API back to the MySQL
backend.
What, if anythign would FDS bring to the table? Still not sure how it is better
than XML
based solution.

Also a concern with FDS is the pricing structure. will each FDS file be
considered a
different app, therefore each one require a license ($6k or $20k)? If each app
was
assigned only one processor on the VM based server would it be able to use FDS
express??

I am just not seeing how FDS figures into the equasion. Is it faster? if so
how? Does it

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Using and image as a link

2006-07-06 Thread Rob Rusher

I suggest just adding a click event on you image object in which the event handler uses the navigateToURL() method. You can find out how to use navigateToURL here:
http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flex/2/docs/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm?context=LiveDocs_Partsfile=1010.htmlYou might also change the cursor to a hand on mouseover. I blogged this a while back.

I noticed that you named your dataProvider myHomePageAC indicating that you are using an ArrayCollection. The E4X notation is used only on XML objects. You can then put the XML into an XMLListCollection to use it as a dataProvider.

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Passing actionscript variable for image path into @Embed()

2006-03-17 Thread Rob Rusher
Kushubhai,

Doug is correct. @Embed is a compile-time directive. Therefore, in order to
reference the image dynamically, you will have to embed the image and
associate it with a variable.

Typically, I will create a class (appnameAssets.as) that contains all of the
embedded assets for my application. I then instantiate that class on an
'assets' property of my ModelLocator. Then I can reference the embedded
image dynamically as ... source={ ModelLocator.assets.myImage } ...

You can do something like this to bind an Image tag to a variable that
refers to an embedded file.

In script:
[Embed(path/to/some/image.png)]
var myImage: String;

And in mxml:
mx:Image source={myImage} /

Flex requires a back-end to connect to a
mail server, so there will have to be a Flex and something. In
this case it happens to be ColdFusion.

So to answer your question, No. There is
not a Flex or Flash _ONLY_

RE: [flexcoders] Dynamic tab event label problem

2006-01-31 Thread Rob Rusher
Every event has two things; target and type. These are the who and what
of the event. Depending upon the event, there may be other properties that
you can access as well.

Who dispatched the event is 'event.target'.
What type of event was dispatched is 'event.type'.

I assume this is Flex 1.5 development because you're still using the
Delegate class in your event dispatcher?

To dump the properties of an object, you would do something like:
for (var i in obj) where 'i' is the property and 'obj' is the object.

Or you could use some of the debugging tools like Inspect Window by
Christophe Coenraets http://coenraets.com/index.jsp or the Echo Console
from the FAST framework
http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/flex/articles/fast_userguide.html.

Hi,

To be clear, we intend to support Flex
Builder on the Mac. However, we don't have a schedule for this yet---it
will be after the 1.0 Windows version ships. But we will get there.

Anyone get this to work?

I installed Eclipse 3.1 on my Mac and copied over
the features, plugins,
etc. from a Windows install of FlexBuilder. The
IDE launches but will not
open the MXML editor. The following exception is
logged to console:

java.lang.NullPointerException
 at
zorn.editors.mxml.MXMLEditor.init(MXMLEditor.java:165)

A couple things I've noticed: in the About
Eclipse dialog (under the Help
menu), the Flex logo does not appear
alongside the Eclipse logo. Also,
under installed features, none of the
zorn.* features appear. Worst of
all, the zorn features xml files have the
following lines at the top:

os=win32
ws=win32

Anyone know if it will ever be possible to run
FlexBuilder on a Mac?

Thanks.

RE: [flexcoders] Sending complex data types to ColdFusion form Flex 1.5

2006-01-26 Thread Rob Rusher

Your custom ActionScript object is translated into a ColdFusion
structure. So, make sure your object name and the argument name are identical,
then make sure the argument type is struct.

When you pass custom objects back from the server, make sure they are
arrays of structures.

Here is a call to the RO:

restService.addReview({review:event.eventReviewProp})

In the CFC:

cffunction name=addReview access=remote
returntype=boolean

 cfargument name=review type=struct required=yes

Hi all,

I have been trying to use Remote-Object to pass complex data types from

Flex to ColdFusion - to no avail. Simple arrays and strings can be

passed easily, but as soon as I send an object all hell breaks loose.

I am running ColdFusion 7 (updater 3) on Win2K with Flex 1.5 (all on
one

machine) using Apache 2.

If anyone has a working example on how to pass complex data types to

ColdFusion that shows how I can read them out as
argument.passedinobject

I would greatly appreciate your help.

Here is the situation:

I am wrapping annotationdata into a shell object which is sent to a

ColdFusion component. Using the debugger, I can see that the correctly

formatted object is sent out. However, ColdFusion responds with unknown

error if I try to access the passed in data.

I don't get an error if I don't set a datatype or required to yes.

However, I am also unable to access the passed in object.

Thanks,

Kai

RE: [flexcoders] Filling a TileList with objects from a dataProvider in Flex 1.5

2006-01-26 Thread Rob Rusher

TileList uses a dataProvider and cellrenderers to do what you're trying
to do.

So you're going to have to add a setValue() to your custom component
that assigns the dataProvider data to your component properties.

Your TileList will then take the result from your service and set the
cellRenderer to your component.

i.e.

mx:TileList

 dataProvider={ myService.result }

 width=100%
height=100%

 cellRenderer=MyComponent

 itemWidth=120
itemHeight=108/

Then in your component do this:

mx:Script

var compProperty: Object;

function setValue( str:String, item:Object )

{

compProperty =item;

}

/mx:Script

mx:Label text={ compProperty.name}/

Flex 1.5

Hi all:

New to Flex 1.5, having problems understanding how to do a seemingly

simple thing: populate a TileList with items created out of a

HTTPService call. Help/pointers would be appreciated.

I have a HTTPServer object:

mx:HTTPService id=myService /

I have a custom component:

custom:MyComponent myProperty1= myProperty2=/

I would like to build a TileList of MyComponent instances, iterating

over the myService.result object to set MyComponent properties.

However, I can't seem to find a way to do this.

I have tried using a Repeater to handle the myService iteration, but

can't find the correct syntax (if there is any) for where to nest the

Repeater within the TileList. It would seem logical to try
something

like:

mx:TileList

 mx:dataProvider

 mx:Repeater
id=r

custom:MyComponent

myProperty={r.currentItem.someValue} /

 /mx:Repeater

 /mx:dataProvider

/mx:TileList

but no dice; compiler complains mightily about naming nested objects.

Am I even in the ballpark on this?

Thoughts from the group?

Thanks in advance,

-E-

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Flash Remoting with Registered Objects

2006-01-25 Thread Rob Rusher
Object.registerClass() helps prevent the AMF gateway from having to search
for the equivalent object type when using RemoteObject. And it returns a
Boolean, so I wonder about SharedObjects not working with out it. You should
be able to store simple data types in a SharedObject. (i.e. Number, String,
Boolean, XML, Date, Array, and Object)

Since Object.registerClass() takes two arguments, the java class package
structure and the ActionScript package structure, what are to passing?

Rob,

Thanks for your quick reply. I am using registerClass() so that the
object can be saved as a shared object on the client, until the user
is ready to submit the form. I tried it without doing this, and it
did not work. The problem I am having is that once the class is
registered, I cannot send an instance of that class to CF.

RE: [flexcoders] Can CSS Inheritance be Controlled?

2006-01-24 Thread Rob Rusher
I'm not quite sure I understand what your query is, but... If what you are
trying to do is have the textDecoration that is applied on the dataProvider
to a LinkBar carry over to the LinkBar, you're out of luck.

Like this:
?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
mx:Application xmlns:mx=http://www.macromedia.com/2003/mxml;
mx:Panel title=Link Bar Panel
mx:LinkBar dataProvider={ myStack } textDecoration=none /
mx:ViewStack id=myStack
mx:HBox label=tab 1 textDecoration=underline
mx:Text text=Text in 1 textDecoration=underline /
/mx:HBox
mx:HBox label=tab 2 textDecoration=underline
mx:Text text=Text in 2 /
/mx:HBox
mx:HBox label=tab 3 textDecoration=none
mx:Text text=Text in 3 textDecoration=underline /
/mx:HBox
/mx:ViewStack
/mx:Panel
/mx:Application

The LinkBar is using the ViewStack as its dataProvider. There is not a
parent child relationship there so inheritance can not happen. Only the
label and icon properties of the ViewStack's children are passed to the
LinkBar.

I would like to insert some Links in a LinkBar that do not inherit the
textDecoration attribute from the parent LinkBar. Setting the
individual Links textDecoration has no effect, they all use the
parent's attribute.

Would anyone have any idea how to do this? Maybe somebody from
Adobe/MM could provide a suggestion?

Thanks,

RE: [flexcoders] Multiple values in a data model

What you want to use is the mx:Object instead of mx:Model.

This example dynamically adds a new object to the mx:Object test each time
the button is clicked.
?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
mx:Application xmlns:mx=http://www.macromedia.com/2003/mxml; xmlns=*

mx:Script
![CDATA[
public var count:Number = 0;

var newRecord:Object = new Object();
newRecord.name = Toby;
newRecord.sign = Leo;
newRecord.birthYear = 1984;
test[ count++ ] = newRecord;
}
]]
/mx:Script

mx:Object id=test/

mx:Button label=Add click=addToModel()/

Inspect/

Subject: [flexcoders] Multiple values in a data model

I have an application I am working on where the user can input
information into various text input fields layed out in a HBOX. If
the user needs to add another person for the input they click on an
add event that dynamically creates another row.

My question is what is the best way to tie multiple entries to the
data model? If there is only a one line entry it would be no problem,
but what do you do when you want a data model to hold mulitple
entries from dynamically created input fields to be re-used
throughout the app or sent back to the database?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Did you try adding it in your style sheet like this:
@font-face {
   src: url(assets/fonts/arial.ttf);
   fontFamily:futura;
   unicode-range: glyphs;
}

Then in your flex-config.xml set the unicode-range:
language-range
   langglyphs/lang
   rangeU+0E01-U+0E5B/range
/language-range

RE: [flexcoders] Max width and height for the Loader??

2005-12-22 Thread Rob Rusher
Moyosaned,

Yes, width and height properties are inherited. It sounds like you want to
set the content to scale to the size of the Loader, so you would want to set
scaleContent to true.

A blind guess, there was a known bug (1.5 bug 84294) in the loader where
during resize of the content the original size is not known.

Also if you are loading an image, I recommend using the Image tag because it
is optimized for images.

Is there a max width/height for the Loader
I tried a width from around 4000 pixel, but I see around 3000/2880.
Is it just me? I'm loading the image like this:

mx:Loader id=image_loader scaleContent=true
maintainAspectRatio=true mouseMove=scroll()/

and

mx:Loader id=image_loader scaleContent=false
maintainAspectRatio=true mouseMove=scroll()/

and setting the source in script.

What am i doing wrong! Is there a max?

[flexcoders] How do you pass bindings into a custom component?

RE: [flexcoders] move window up

2005-08-15 Thread Rob Rusher
Rajesh,
Because each title window has a parent you can simply get the top child with
the getChildAt() method and then set your target above that.

function popToTop( target : mx.core.UIObject )
{
var parent = target.parent;
var topSibling = parent.getChildAt( parent.numChildren - 1 );

if ( topSibling != target )
target.setDepthAbove( topSibling );

RE: [flexcoders] About synchronizing grid rendering with service completion

2005-08-09 Thread Rob Rusher

You could use a ViewHelper for that view. You
could also set the showBusyCursor on the RemoteObject to prevent the user for
clicking anything until the screen is ready.

By the way, I forgot to mention that we
are using the cairngorm Project microarchitecture, and so our question would be
towards finding the best way (or best practice) to achieve this functionality.

Your approach seems ok to us, Tracy, but
how would we implement this the cairngorm way?

Could you disable them in the mxml tag to

Hi all,

We have a view that contains a grid and some action buttons.
These action buttons must be disabled/enabled depending on the data provided to
the grid. The data is provided by a remoteObject, and the decision of
enabling/disabling these buttons is taken by the view. Everything is working
fine, except for this little decision part, since it starts rendering even
though the data returned from the remote object is not yet complete. Is there
any way to avoid the rendering of this little component until the remote object
call finishes?

Any help will be appreciated.

I too hate one letter variable names. :)

One of the other developers actually wrote the solution. Another created the
problem in the first place.

A few people mentioned the zeros. Courier New makes it hard to spot.

Did you know that Flex allows variable names of more than one letter that
express the intent of the code ? :-)

Incidentally, in your previous code, the line:

var test:myV0 = new myV0();

looks on my screen like you're using the numeral zero rather than the
capital letter O in your class name, so the compiler is correctly telling
you The class my-vee-nought could not be loaded. Should save you your
work around above...

Best,

Steven
PS. If you rename the variable to t, don't bother strictly typing it and
drop the brackets in the object instantiation, you should save 8 keypresses
and remove the possible places for typing a nought instead of an O to 1
instead of 2 ;)

RE: [flexcoders] databinding question

Its probably because of the way
they are instantiated. dispatchEvent() is a mix-in from UIEventDispatcher.

You might try adding ChangeEvent to the
component once it is created. Just a thought.

Quick question...why are these different:

height=100% portfolio={selectedPortfolio} /

Versus:

mainContent.createChild(ReportingDatesPanel, , {width:
100%, height: 100%, portfolio: selectedPortfolio});

When the selectedPortfolio object changes in the main app with the MXML
in first example above, the custom component recognizes the change in the
selectedPortfolio object and performs the correct action.

If I have the main application dynamically create the custom component
with the code in the 2nd example above, if the selectedPortfolio
object changes, the dynamically created custom component does not see that
change and none of the actions that I want to take place, actually take
place. Im guessing this is a databinding issueam I supposed
to set the portfolio attribute differently to catch changes in this object when
dynamically creating the custom component?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

RE: [flexcoders] How much do you charge for Flex development?

2005-07-20 Thread Rob Rusher
What?! Are you guys crazy? My mechanic charges me more than that.

Consultancies are going to charge between $100 (newbie) and $250 (guru) an
hour for a Flex developer. Sure, as an independent, you will charge less but
not that much less.

Maybe I'm spoiled, but Jesse you're worth way more my friend.

Busy/Bad Mood = $60/hour
I like you/Not Busy/Good Mood = $30/hour

As far as salary, I'd think because of your server background, 70-90 is fair

 market rate (per various job sites the USA government department of
commerce salary reports) depending on company size, but depends on the
direction they are going with Flex.

For example, the reason I'm asked to do contract Flex by clients (beyond the

fact there aren't many Flex contractors) is because I know how to get the
GUI to work. The reverse holds true in having a good server-side developer
on the team doing Flex because he/she knows the impact on the backend and
can offer valuable insight into making the application work better, leaving
the GUI/wireframe/frontend visual details up to someone like me.

...of course, the same logic applies to my Flash projects, hehe.
Flex/Flash, here's my typical scenario:

Jesse, can you do Flex contract?

No, but these people might have time. :: forwards list of contractors ::

*alternate universe where Jesse has time for more than 1 contract job a
year*

Sure, but I'm really busy right now, what are the details of the project?

:: gets details / specs / whatever wireframes are available, if any ::

Ok, swag time estimate is X hours @ 60 an hour, my rate, thus that'll cost
you $XX for my services.

Geez, we don't have the budget for that

:: negotiations ::

Ok, I've adjusted the scope of what I can do, rate, and hours based on our
discussions. We agree to $XX for the project since that fits nicely in your

budget. Let's knock this shiz out of the park!

So, I say a rate, but rarely ever get it because of budgetting, which is
understandable and I'll adjust what I can do and what I charge accordingly,
if at all possible. Now, as far as salary, I'd treat it similiarly to any
New Media + Front-end JSP Development type job, and you'd have an accurate
assessment of salary range. Naturally, all the other rules of location,
budget, company size, time, etc. all factor in which is beyond the scope of
this email; there are plenty of resources online both professional,
independent, and governement which can help you make a more educated
inference based on the numbers I gave above.

As a CF developer, I've been recently been putting more serious
thought into becoming a Flex developer. It would be a long time
before the company I work for could move into this direction, if
ever. So I'd have to become a contractor or find a Flex position at
another company.

But I'm curious as to how much a Flex developer should be making. I
realize much of that depends on your skillset, but does their exist
any averages? or possibly some minimums and maximums?

Let's pretend I make around $75K/yr as a full time CF developer. I'm
by no means a Flex guru, with less then a month of learning it. I
would also be seeking a CF position with an emphasis on Flex
development, for, it seems as though I'd have to take a good sized
pay cut if I were to become purely a Flex developer with what little
experience I have... and therefore would need to offer my CFML
skillset as well, to counter the pay cut. Personaly, getting a CF
position with a Flex emphasis and making approximately the same
amount of money would seem like a bargain to me. But would I be short-
changing myself? Would a lack of Flex developers allow a person to be
less competitive and ask for more?

And what would contractor generally charge? I don't see myself
becoming a contractor yet, for I'd rather seek a fulltime position
where I could learn first.

RE: [flexcoders] Minimal webapp

2005-07-20 Thread Rob Rusher
Aldo,

I am building some POCs and I wouldn't like to deliver the MXML / AS
sources. Two questions:

- Can I deliver just the compiled SWFs? How?

Yes you can if the SWF doesn't use the Flex proxy for anything (e.g.
RemoteObject). You simply set the keep-generated-swfs to true in
flex-config.xml, run the page and then copy the generated SWF to wherever.

- Will they expire after a day?

Yes, they will expire if you don't have a license (NC or Commercial).

BTW, they are to be deployed in WLS8.1... but I already have them
working in a similar setup in my box, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I would suggest that you deploy your POCs to the Flex Explorer sample
application. Then just hand out the URL to people so that they can see it
work as well as see the code. It's very simple; just edit the topics.xml in
the explorer directory.

RE: [flexcoders] Business Delegate, command class, service locator, etc, etc

2005-07-19 Thread Rob Rusher
You need to view the following breezo:
http://macromedia-v5.emea.breezecentral.com/architectingflexapplications/

It demonstrates the .95 version.

Subject: [flexcoders] Business Delegate, command class, service locator,
etc, etc

hello everyone,

this is my first post to the group. I am a long-time CF guy and have
bought (5 copies!) and read the RIA book and had Figleaf come inhouse
to give Flex beginning training. We want to start really getting some
applications out the door, but I want to make sure I understand the
framework and best practices before we get too far. They didn't teach
us that stuff in class.

Since the code for the credit card application in the book isn't
available, does someone have a graphical representation of the various
architectural best practices and how they interact with each other? I
downloaded the cairngorm files - which I assume somewhat follow
architectural suggestions set forth in the book - but I haven't yet
been able to make much sense of them.

many thanks.

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Flex License(s) Performance

2005-07-19 Thread Rob Rusher
Jack,

You compile the SWF on a server with Flex install. Then copy the generated
SWF over to your web server and embed it in a web page.

The difference is that you don't need a Java Application Server running.
i.e. more system resources

I'm not positive, but I think you need special licensing permission from MM
to deploy a Flex app without the server.

Darron:

Thanks for your input.

I read Ted's post. His production server does not have Flex. Where
is the SWF being served from?

Forgive my ignorance, but if you need a flex license for every server
the SWF sits on, what's the difference?

Can you elaborate further?

Thanks again,

Jack

 With the above scenario how many simultaneous users can adequately

 better to ask how many per hour?

 See Ted's entry here about scaling Flex:
 http://www.powersdk.com/ted/2005/05/scaling-flex.php

 I completely agree with him as well. I don't have Flex running on
the
 server at all. Instead, I take my Flex-compiled .swf and place it
on a
 typical web server. Then, the Flex application is delivered as
a .swf
 and there's no need for the server to do any extra processing at
all.
 I've never had a server crash because it couldn't send out .swf
files
 fast enough. Keep in mind though, you'll need a Flex license for
every
 server the .swf file sits on.

 You can use RemoteObjects without a Flex server running as well,
but
 you'll need to use another AMF gateway such as OpenAMF (or you can
use
 ColdFusion). If you use WebServices, you might need a little shim
 script to get around the security restrictions of the Flash Player
 (loading data across domains), depending on what server the web
services
 are located on.

 Also, I read somewhere that RemoteObjects is faster. Is it a
 signficant increase?

 In general RemoteObjects are faster because it uses AMF, which is
a
 binary format and much less verbose than WebServices. It's hard
to give
 a definite yes/no answer because I've actually seen results go
both ways...

To become a certifiedFlex Programmer, if so how hard
is the test? I mean I was just wondering?

RE: [flexcoders] Location of the shared.sws

2005-07-18 Thread Rob Rusher

Joost,

You need to create the library descriptor
file that defines the SWS. In this descriptor file you will be able to
reference SWF or SWC .

http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flex/15/flex_docs_en/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm?context=Flex_Documentationfile=1165.htm

The livedocs link above shows how to point
to a different server.

Subject: [flexcoders] Location of
the shared.sws

Hi,

I have the following problem regarding the shared library:

The webserver (server 1) embeds mxml.swf files from the
flexserver (server 2). The shared.sws is located on server 2. The mxml
saysthe rsl can be found on rsl=shared.sws.

When the page is accessed throught the HTML the sws cannot
be found. When I call the mxml directly everything works fine. In the first
case the mxml expects the sws on server1. So entering an absolute path, like
rsl=http://domain/shared.swsshould
help. But this doesn't work A compile error 'the resource cannot be found' is
returned. Does anybody have an idea how to do this?

Thanks!

-Joost

[flexcoders] Re: mx:ScrollView not known to compiler?

2005-07-14 Thread Rob Rusher
ScrollView is not in the mxml_manifest.xml.

If you add component id=mx.core.ScrollView
class=mx.core.ScrollView/ to /WEB-INF/flex/mxml-manifest.xml and
restart the service the error message will go away.

Rob Rusher

 Well, why would you want to create a ScrollView object? Most
Panels, and in your specific case, your HBox, have properties
HScrollPolicy and VScrollPolicy which allow you to turn on/off/auto
(default) those scroll bars.

 I also believe ScrollView is just a base class for objects that
use scrolls(not sure if it can be instantiated or not;abstract
class???not sure)

 Maybe I'am missing something obvious here (or my brain just melted
because of 30°C/86°F in the office) but why can't I use
mx.core.ScrollView inside mxml? The sample below does not compile
and gives the following error: Don't know how to parse
element http://www.macromedia.com/2003/mxml:ScrollView;. It is not
a known type or a property of mx.core.Application.

 mx:Application xmlns:mx=http://www.macromedia.com/2003/mxml;
   mx:ScrollView
 mx:HBox width=1000 height=100/
   /mx:ScrollView
 mx:Application

 I also tried to build a MXML component that subclasses ScrollView
but still no go.

 Ideas?

 Dirk.
