FLUXLIST: Re: France

2002-05-27 Thread Tom Holmes
I'd love to see a Fluxshow... but French is definitely not my domain. I've been around a lot of foreign tourists lately, and have resolved not to even visit another country without a good working knowledge of its official language(s). I abandoned my studies of French in high school, so I don't think I could pick it up in time for the show. Plus, I live across a considerable expanse of water in the Atlantic Ocean.. ~tGet your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com.

FLUXLIST: Address books abound

2002-05-23 Thread Tom Holmes
Minna,
I got my address book in the mail today. The only reason for the delay, however, is that my address changed. Not that I expect much mail-art from Fluxlisters in the next three months, but I thought I'd give my temporary address, then my new permanent(ish) address once I find one. So here it is:
Tom Holmes
PO Box 88
Hillsboro, NH 03244

This goes for fellow Fluxlister Dan Holmes ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) as well.
My address book cover is lovely, by the way. Who was responsible for the bark-like cover? It's great, but I'm worried if I open it too wide, it'll break.

I can't explain why, or even approach explaination, but I think "Buzzer" is my favorite poem of yours I've read. I really can't say why it appeals to me so much more than the others. I'm not even sure why I'm bothering to let you know, since it doesn't help you that much.
Oh, well.

Re: FLUXLIST:by the by...

2002-03-07 Thread Tom Holmes

Isn't that more like onomonopoea? 'Tinntinnabulate' sounds like a bell, but the word doesn't really look like it. Or is my idea of iconicity off?
Coincidentally, Arvo Pärt uses the term to describe his works, post-1970 or so, after his sabbatical. Note the following, borrowed (without permission) from http://www.musicolog.com/:

"I have discovered that it is enough when a single note is beautifully played. This one note, or a silent beat, or a moment of silence, comforts me. I work with very few elements - with one voice, two voices. I build with primitive materials - with the triad, with one specific tonality. The three notes of a triad are like bells and that is why I call it tintinnabulation." -Arvo Pärt

Thought that was kinda neat.

Hm... invisibility would have it's definite advantages, butmost ofthese advantages are selfish. I'd like to be able to say I'd prefer flight, as the ability lends itself to aiding others more easily.
Though really, I'd like to have the ability to make hats out of thin air.

Re: FLUXLIST: does fluxus exist? a simplistic approach...

2001-11-29 Thread Tom Holmes

My knowledge is limited on these types of subjects, as it is on all
subjects, but my impression was that a 'neo-' movement was simply an old
movement being done again, eg. neo-classicism. I understood neo-classical
music to be similar to classical music, but composed in the nineteenth and
twentieth centuries, as opposed to the sixteenth and seventeenth. Does art
use different rules than music for terminology? Mind you, I have a primarily
music-educated background.

Re: FLUXLIST: Clear Channels List of Songs with Questionable Lyrics

This list is absolutely appalling; most of those songs have nothing truly
offensive in them, and in fact several have positive messages that should be
heard, especially at a time like this. Thank you for adding them into
rotation. I hope others in charge of radio will do likewise.

FLUXLIST: Projects

2001-09-01 Thread Tom Holmes

I've been working the past couple weeks to put some music up on the Net. I
have limited resources, so my only really viable option was
www.garageband.com. It streams music via RealAudio. My brother and I have to
review about twenty generic pop songs before we can upload anything, so soon
we should have our first song uploaded. It will be called The Wheele Goes
Round, and it runs about an hour and a half. The fun part is when other
unsuspecting pop musicians are forced to listen to it and review it for
their own upload credits. I'm looking forward to that.

Re: FLUXLIST: Room Enquiry

2001-08-09 Thread Tom Holmes

I'm afraid that I cannot vouch for any alternate plans for the House of
Flux. After all, it was built at least thirty years before I was born. I was
simply citing a well-known fact, that room 42 did not exist.
Also, I've never been to the House of Flocks. It must be very warm, and
smell terrible.

Re: FLUXLIST: Room Enquiry

2001-08-08 Thread Tom Holmes

Several possibilities:

1) You may have been eating in room 24. Since the door was closed, the
numbers would appear backward to you, if they appeared at all, thus
displaying 42.

2) You may have been eating in a room that had been mistakenly marked 42,
but was really just a large closet or the like. Whether marked as 42 or
not, no room in the House of Flux is truly a forty-second room.

3) The room number may have been obscured by fruit, such as an enormous
tomato.

4) You may be playing a practical joke on us.

5) You may have eaten not in the House of 'Flux', but in the House of
'Flax', which of course has a room 42. I have made that mistake myself
several times, as they are on the same street and look disturbingly similar
from the outside. A clue that could verify this: if your food seemed
excessively stringy, you were probably in the House of Flax.

Whatever the case may be, rest assured you did not eat in room 42. The
builders simply did not build a room 42.

Re: FLUXLIST: the robbery

2001-08-03 Thread Tom Holmes

create a one-exhibit, one-day-only miniature museum in your house. Invite
the neighborhood with free admission and refreshments. For an exhibit, make
a display of the things that were stolen by putting several numbers next to
blank spaces with notes marked, item missing. Put the sandals in an
inconspicuous place in the display.

FLUXLIST: Mr. Stevens' FluxProject

2001-07-18 Thread Tom Holmes

To all in Fluxlist:
Hi! My name is Tom, and I'm new to the list. I've been on the digest form
for a while, testing the water, and it looks like fun. I hope I don't seem
imposing if I offer a piece for Mr. Stevens' new FluxProject. I don't have
the poem immediately on hand, but I'll dig it up when I get a chance (the
file is on a computer fifty miles away).
History: I received a corny poem via e-mail that had been forwarded and
responded to several times, leaving it with several layers of these . I
used the computer's drag-and-paste technology to mutilate the poem for about
an hour. It still evokes the same emotions, and, in fact, is an improvement
on the original, in my opinion.
If you are willing to accept it at least for review, thank you, I will send
it as soon as I get ahold of it myself.
Best wishes to all!

Yours truly,
Tom Holmes,
The Master Of Destruction.
