FLUXLIST: Visual Poems of the Italian Futurists

A Tumultuous Assembly: Visual Poems of the Italian Futurists
August 1, 2006–January 7, 2007
The Getty Center

Words become machines, dancers, and explosions in the visual poetry of
the Italian Futurists. Dedicated to freeing language from the bonds of the
old order—syntax, punctuation, the horizontal—these polemicists of the new
unleashed their words-in-freedom, broadsheets and prints meant to
scandalize, incite, and amuse.

Institute Exhibition Gallery.

Why the flux can't we just fluxing get along?! David, Enid, J*** and I,
we're all happily fluxing whenever we fluxing feel like it -- what the flux
ever happened to just fluxing being kind to one another?

I fluxed up once; I don't want to do it again. I just want to fluxing make
art, and whatever the flux those fluxers want to call it, it doesn't fluxing
matter to me.

By the way, could you or Ann post a link to a site from which issues of

The web site is a little out of date so it does not list the issues, but
they are 39.3 Fluxus and Legacy and 40.1 Fluxus After Fluxus and there is
contact information about getting copies, it should be abut 20.00 for the

One idea...

Since you already have a Blogger account, just create a new blog especially
for your pictures. Post all the photos you like to your Kaprow Memorial
Photo Blog. Then send the link to this list, and post a highlight photo and
a link on the fluxlist blog. That way everybody can see your pictures (which
we [or at least I] would really like to see) without the photos taking up
too much space on the shared blog.

  Dear All who wrote

I have your questions for Alison, it's just that we have been very busy
and there hasn't really been a good moment to sit down and look at them
properly. I haven't forgotten! We will be performing at the Museo Fortuny
on June 15. I'll try and make any photos etc available (if anyone's
interested).
I mentioned the idea of perhaps corresponding direct with the list and
she seemed quite up for it - but we were full of cheap red wine... Emmett
Wiliams was only in town for a couple of days as they were off to Verona to
see Francesco Conz - who's publishing a new book of Ann Noel's. But I guess
we could do it long distance.

CANTAR DEL HUFF

John M. Bennett

POEMS

In English
Con una Traducción al Español por el Autor

Prologues by
Jon Cone
Ivan Argüelles

Illustrations by Larry Shineman

still I slat beside you persistent’s
beauty in the face of pages torn
and my unclouded headache like a storm

…y todavía me he
tablillado a tu lado / la belleza de lo persis
tente en la cara de las / páginas rasgadas y mi
jaqueca sin nubes / como una tormenta

from A NON

“There isn’t any way to approach Bennett, if what you expect from a poem is
conditioned by all those gurgling Norton Antologies of the last two thousand
years. …what does Bennett mean and just where precisely should he be placed
in the book shelf in my study? Well, the question is unanswerable… We
therefore suggest an insistent ignorance. and simply point to such
monumental poems as Bennett’s Huff: Here Bennett attacks “the thumbed blank
pages”, then proceeds to “the asshole’s spigot” dragging behind the
“muttered damp luggage” of language. Thus we see art before creation,
arising out of the void…” - Jon Cone

“It has been poet Bennett’s task to explore with a maddening sense of detail
and obsessive recurrence this aspect of the human condition, its puzzling
exasperating and irritating swarm of imagery simmering just below the
brain’s conscious ‘ego’, stammering buttends with the unconscious Id’s
Dionysian forays into song and debauchery.” - Ivan Argüelles

Did I mention Google?

strange kind of woman
honky-tonk woman
evil woman
a hard woman to love
you ache just like a woman
you fake just like a woman
you make love just like a woman
but you break just like a little girl
you make me feel like a natural woman
oh, she looks so good / oh, she's made out of wood
'cause everybody knows / the things she does to please
she's just a little tease / she's the femme fatale
she put a spell on you
you get your money for nothing, you get your chicks for free
she's funny that way
a whole lotta woman
she's like the wind
she's a river
when a man loves a woman
parachute woman
smack my bitch up, change my pitch up
girls just want to have fun
the men don't know, but the little girls understand
lady madonna, children at your feet, wonder how you manage to make ends
meet

woman is the nigger of the world
a girl with kaleidoscope eyes
sweet loretta modern thought she was a woman
all the girls around her say she's had it coming
i want a short haired girl that sometimes wears it twice as long
there she goes again
she's down on her knees, my friend
there she stood in the doorway
then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
there she goes, just walking down the street
sweet leaf
let me stand next to your fire
some people say little girls should be seen but not heard
girls, girls, girls,
Liberian girl
she's my girl
you're fifteen, you're beautiful, and you're mine
i love-a-love my little calendar girl
the KKK took my baby away
baby, i love you
she's a nightmare hippy girl
she has tofu the size of Texas
she plays footsie with another dimension
she'll do anything to make you feel like an asshole
she'll come back as fire and kill all the liars, leave a blanket of ash on
the ground

summer babe (winter version)
he lied to her, he lied to her (with a perfectly straight face)
her, she can go quietly, by a disease or a blow
you dont't have to be rich to be my girl
sex bomb sex bobm, you're my sex bomb
no woman no cry
sheila is a punk rocker
judy is a punk
blood sugar baby, she's magic, sex magic, sex magic
so star me kitten
she's a star-star
if i have a reason to believe, then she has a reason to forgive
the girl can't help it

yeah, it's also pretty weird, actually we should say no veo a alguien or
no hay alguien, but people who speak spanish don't really stop and think
what we are really saying... its like saying ahorita intead of ahora...
as if we said little right now instead of right now... and there are
many others like afuerita instead of afuera (just outside/outside)... we
are just odd people.

no hay nada

there isn't nothing

Why doesn't English accept double negation? It is so much fun!

See, in Spanish you cannot see nobody (no veo a nadie), obviously, and
you can spend half your time insisting that there is no nothing (no hay
nada).

I especially like it when nothing happens (no pasa nada). People tell you
that to calm you down - really helpful.

i sometimes wonder why technology can't deal with simple text in a
uniform manner. allen's sonnet was a sonnet to me, yet not to him. one
of my poems came back to me as one really big line, which it definitely
isn't, and now i don't know whether mIEKAL's message is supposed to
appear as it does for me in this reply email (just text), or is
actually supposed to contain millions of question marks (which is both
highly enjoyable and thoroughly taxing on my brain).

back in 2003 I did David Matlin's novel How the night is divided by

Cool!

I used to mess around with similar stuff, but rather than altering books,
I'd take out the pages and manipulate that instead. So the result was
rather more visual and rather less book-like. I suppose that's why I lost
interest.

Are you sure you can't blog it? It should be trivial...

Best

*Call to All*
Seritypes: A Genetic Screening Project
Send an email, an attached image, a little DNA:

We deny race, gender, borders and the construct of other, a key mechanism
in the dehumanization of the Oppressed and the Oppressor. We affirm the
fundamental parity of all individuals.

http://www.art.wisc.edu/sgc2006/Pages/demos-seritypes.html explains (and
please see below) the
24-hour procedure that our team will be conducting in Madison WI, April
8-9 (tentative), 2006, and we'd like you to act as a remote hub (or
participant in Madison if you're in the area). If you visit the No Hate
Page (http://billfisher.dreamhost.com/nohate.html) and scroll to the bottom,
Re-Present is a past project that uses a similar strategy and methodology.

Along with sending imagery and text via email during the project (10 minutes
of your time or as much as 24 hours of participation), we may ask for your
spit (swab, cigarette butt, chewed gum, or a licked and sealed envelope), a
fingerprint or face image, and for you to collect a similar sample from
friends, colleagues, family, and strangers, or encourage their direct
participation. Your genetic material will be rendered and mixed with
printing inks and we'll go from there in the 24-hour coded and sequenced
production of silkscreen prints. Other imagery may be up- and downloaded
from a central site by all members of the network throughout the duration of
the project.

Please contact Bill Fisher at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if this is something
you'd like to work on. It would be great to have your participation in this
affirmation of shared, borderless identity.

2006 Southern Graphics Council Conference Proposal
April 5-9, 2006

Project Title
Seritypes: A Genetic Screening Project

Project Authors
Jeff Drye, Bill Fisher, Richard Lou, Danielle Wyckoff, the Arts faculty of
Georgia College State University and International Participants

Project Proposal
A chromosome's structure may change on rare occasions. A segment may be
deleted, inverted, moved to a new location, or duplicated. . .Crossing over
and changes in chromosome number or in a chromosome's structure may
influence the course of evolution. The changes in genotype (genetic
make-up) lead to variations in phenotype (observable traits) among members
of a population, so that evolution is possible.
Cecie Starr and Ralph Taggart, 1995.

A team of printmakers will transform the serigraphy studio at the University
of Wisconsin into a genetic research laboratory/operating theatre, complete
with lab coats, face masks, rubber gloves, research stations, etc.
Conference attendees as well as national and international participants will
be solicited to submit DNA samples (through cell scrapings e.g.) which will
then be combined with acrylic screen inks for creating works on paper during
a 24-hour procedure. A database of imagery will also be
uploaded/downloaded during this period by all participants. In Madison,
this imagery and the subsequent screens will be coded (as chemical
proteins), treated as raw genetic material and parceled out in discrete,
Mendelian units. Combining and printing these different genotypes will lead
to variations in phenotypes (the final observable expression of independent
inheritance), and through deleting, inverting, moving, and duplicating,
change will be affected in this genetic expression, allowing for the
evolution of the printed image to occur. Others in the participant network
will be accessing the shared online genetic (imagery) database to create
work at their own hub-location. The work which evolves over this 24-hour
period will be a population without borders, authorless and of shared
ownership. We hope to illustrate a process in which identity will be
defined through our physically shared, inextricable commonality rather than
through constructed (and divisive) geopolitical, social, religious, racial,
and gender-based ideologies.

Our Madison research team will also raffle off Genographic Project kits
(https://www5.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/participate.html), another
worldwide project with potentially
beneficial implications.

Dear Friends,
12 contributions until now for our anthology.
There is still a little space on CD for you to fit in.
I think a new definitive deadline could be October 15th.

Probably Eric Andersen will publish a sound file in the Anthology.
I also asked Owen Smith to write a little Fluxlist introduction to be
included in the booklet.
About the booklet mIEKAL aND and David-Baptiste Chirot are doing an
excellent artwork!

Come on Fluxfolks; I don't wanna take the project out of the Fluxlist!

Subject: On transit. Visual narratives in North America
Date: Mon, 6 Jun 2005 11:48:10 -0700

On transit.Visual narratives in North America.
Opening June 20th at 7.30pm. Baja California's Center of Arts in Mexicali
(México)

Catalog may be ordered or downloaded at http://www.cruncheditores.tk/

The word transit has a sense of double meaning. In first instance it
refers to the pass on public space, to travel by scales. In an indirect
form is related with Latin transitione, denoting a change of state, a
modification, a sudden variation in terms of reasoning or expression, a
space of specific intermediation. When we speak about the border culture,
the notion of transitgets dressed with both senses and aims towards the
construction of a contextual frame that allows to glimpse dynamics not
necessarily visible in regards to the invention and re-invention of the
every day things. Facing the globalization, the border must be think as an
extended way, reproduced in each one of the processes that constitute the
systems of symbolic and material interchange. The almost mythologic speech
of the cultural resistance hides the nature of the things and in special
the transit of them. The present exhibition not only represents an
approach of the term, but also the form in which the sense of the North
America is constructed. Although the field of the arts has been
overdressed with a relative autonomy, it persists in works a feedback
with respect to its own contexts and consensuses.

On-Transit. Visual narratives in North America reunites six young,
original artists of the three countries that conform the NAFTA region.
More than a revision of the latest tendencies, is a sample of the
individual restlessness of the artists, whose tie point in conceptual
terms is the idea of transit in terms of the real and the possible, what
corresponds to the social surroundings and its imaginary understood like
costories. The sample explores identity and other closely linked questions
about the development of the communities and the landscape, but also
hedonistic perspectives in regards the notion of traveling and movement.
In formal terms, the exhibition integrates a series of techniques that go
from the drawing to the electronic graph, from the photography to the
performance, the installation and the intervention.

Besides the work of Bibiana Padilla Maltos, Camille Turner, Katie Herzog,
Marc LeBlanc, Anne SARAH Johnson and Carlos Adolfo Gutiérrez Vidal, the
reader/public will find the approaches critical of Sobaz Benjamín,
Alejandro Espinoza, Meeka Walsh and Jeff M. Ward; an extended dialogue
that pretends to extend in the field of the arts and complements with
literary perspectives, travel journals and the opinion of Tim Dunn, Josh
Kun, Jerome Rothenberg, Mark Weiss, Gabriel Trujillo Muñoz and Lorne
Roberts.

so, for the past two weeks i've been on a pie/cake/cookie/donut binge.
Saturday evening i'm at a friend's house and he's going through a list of
pies in a cookbook, looking for something to make for his dad's birthday. i
whip
out my portable recorder and catch about a minute of him reading through
all
these different pies. then, today, i performed 30 minutes of ambient
soundscape at the capitol building and at one point dropped in the
recording of my
friend listing pies. now i'm coming home to macademia fluxus pie. if you
knew me, you'd know that i'm in heaven.

paul arnaud
p.s. i read this fluxlist mail everyday but don't speak up very much. i
guess i want to tell everyone that you're all maintaining a very
interesting
character in my imagination through your email address as it shows up in my
email
box. i just can't believe you're all real out there doing crazy and regular
things. i wish we could all get together and drive volvos through the
desert.

artist in my town and would like to spark something so not to vicariously
live
my ideas about fluxus thru alienated means; i.e. mass media, email, etc. no
