Re: [Framers] Framers Digest, Vol 206, Issue 7

2023-06-25 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Janet,
Your message indicates that the master pages are missing. Maybe you missed
importing them to some of the files in the book?
You could solve that simply by importing the Master pages (from your template
file or any other file that does have all the "correct" master pages) to all
files in your book.
Also, you'd probably should import the MasterPages table that's located on the
Reference page to the other chapters as well.

Also, assuming you've set the trigger (as explained by Charles/Art) with a para
tag (he suggested creating a special "Anchor_Landscape" tag), sometimes I
noticed the update to apply the Master pages doesn’t work if there is no page
break after the landscape page. Try to clear off whatever you don't really need
on the landscape page (basically, any other triggers on the page, I use a
"PageBreak" para tag (font of 2pts, SpaceBelow of ~800-1000 pts, a bunch of
spaces in the "Numbering" tab so you can "see it" on your body pages).

A normal Anchor Tag, if it's not used in the MasterPages table located in the
Reference pages, wouldn't normally be a trigger, so shouldn't affect things, I
think.

If anyone has links to helpful troubleshooting guides for this type of thing,

Re: [Framers] Variable Preferences - custome colurs available?

2023-02-02 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Klaus,
Thanks for the update about the colors. I didn’t realize defining custom colors
would not work with this new feature.
The feature, as Sue said is very difficult to work with when only FM internal
colors are available.
I hope they fix this…

Just another tip for Visible Variables ….
Add a backslash underscore ( \_ ) to the beginning of the variable defs (also,
idea was Shlomo’s).
(You’d have to do it for each variable (via the MIF file could speed things
up).)
It then shows the first letter of the variable with an underline, but only in
FM (i.e. on your screen). The underline doesn’t print to PDF or on paper (not
sure what happens when converting to HTML though).
HTH,
Orly

Re: [Framers] Framers Digest, Vol 201, Issue 7 - Custom Colors

2023-02-01 Thread Orly Zimmerman
Hi All,
Regarding how to get custom colors.
I've been doing this for ages for my conditional texts. I'm always looking for
more screen-friendly colors.
I assume you need to create or import colors that you don't already have into
your file.

To create new colors:
Go to View>Color>Definitions (this Menu item should be the same regardless of
what FM version you're using).
Play with the box to see what it does, but it's here that you define new colors.
1. Define a new color name (say, Product A)
2. Define its color using:
- RGB, CMYK, or HLS numbers
   or
- pick one from an existing Color Library (see button on right of Color
window)
3. The color should now be available in from the
para(CNTL-m)/font(CNTL-d)/table dialog(CNTL-t). etc. boxes - Color option.
Note re Tables: Shading uses these colors. For Table lines - you need to define
table rules in a different place.

These options allow you to do things like rename the red color to, say,
*Internal* (i.e. create a new color), and other cool things...
Red, of course remains a red color, just now you'll be able to change the
*Internal* color to another color if such a need should arise.
=
Another cool FM thing - FM colors can be defined to belong to something like a
set of colors called a *Color View*.
You can use color views to hide things (usually a graphic item), such as a
watermark, just by changing the Color View.
I learnt this from Shlomo Peretz, and expanded upon it for my own purposes to
hide (conditionalize) a table column (before Adobe introduced the feature -
until a few versions ago you could only conditionalize rows.)
There must be other cool things to do with this...

To view existing colors:
1. Go to View>Color>Views
This opens a Color View window with options for up to 6 different Color
Views.
The 3 sub windows are used to define the colors as Normal, Cutout, or,
Invisible. I don't use Cutout - just Normal (where the color shows) or
Invisible - where the color is hidden in the file. (Mind you, if you use a word
with that color, then the word is invisible, but the space it takes up remains
as is.).
 2. Click on a color name to move it between the windows.
Hint: Hitting Shift from your keyboard along with one of the small arrows
(right/left) of the Color View window, will cause all the colors to move
between the windows.
3. Click Set.
This window is used to set which Color View you use for your current document.
This definition can be imported via Color Defs (from Import Formats option).
It's useful when creating a template file with all the defs you need for say
online outp0ut vs PDF outputs, etc.

Re: [Framers] Framers Digest, Vol 195, Issue 3 - Save to PDF - Minutes turned into hours (cuc tu)

2022-06-14 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI C2,
Did you try a MIF wash?
This means saving all the files, as well as the book file, as MIF, and then
resaving as FM.
This and perhaps restarting your computer usually helps in these situations.

The simple way to do the MIF wash to a book is to install the BookMIFwash
driver (BookComponentMIFWash.dll found in the ) that comes with your FM
installation - search for it in one of the FM subfolders - there is a text
readme file (fm_bookmifwash.c) that tells you how to install it such that it
shows up on your FM menu line.
This, in the past, has saved me many times.
(Oddly enough, it's under SAMPLES>SCRIPTS and UTILITIES in my installation.)

I currently run the latest FM - so now I do a Publish>PDF which is usually
fine. Haven't had to do a MIF wash in a while, thank goodness.
Much Luck,
OrlyZ

Hi All,
One-by-one, we're all experiencing a problem saving as PDF. We're still using
FM12. It does not matter if we're working on the network or local HDD.
We know the IT group changed virus protection from Sophos to Windows Security
and we've disabled everything we can. I'm not sure if that is related or if
there could have been a Windows update that has affected this version of FM.
We've tried uninstalling and reinstalling.
Any suggestions?

Hi there,
Did you make sure that the name "Color08" is named exactly the same throughout
all your files? FM is case-sensitive, so "color08" is not the same as "Color08"
You probably don't want to go thru them 1x1.
Use a script to remove all unused formats (color names) and then import the
right color def from your designated template file.

Howdy Frame Users.

Another softball for you.

Many years ago we had a writer who experimented with random FrameMaker knobs.
He fancied colors one day and now we have this gremlin when updating books that
Color08 definition does not match the rest of the book.

I have all of our thousands of Frame files in one network folder. How can I
purge this issue from my life? I cannot even figure out how to address this one
file in a book. Where is this definition hiding? Why if I import color defs to
my entire book from my template file, removing all overrides, does this issue
persist?

Thanks All.

[Framers] FM2HTML5 Split Topic by Heading Para Style not working

2022-03-21 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
I'm trying to create HTML5 directly from an FM file or book.
To start with, I would like to split the topics based on my 2 Headings.
These are numbered headings "across all columns and side heads". The page
layout includes side heads. I instruct the HTML5 output to discard the
numbering for all the Headings - that works. The split into Topics by Para
Style is not working.
I get one long page with all info in the same HTML page.
Any ideas what could be preventing the split by heading from happening?
I'm using FM2020 v16.0.4.1062
Windows 10 Pro

Many Thanks,
Orly

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker to Robohelp Integration

2022-03-13 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Robert,
This is also what I've found - linking FM source files to generate the online
help.
My team started me off using FM because they wanted PDF deliverables - silicon
documentation are hefty books and FM keeps them all wrapped up very nicely and
very stable - publishes fine PDFs that can be jointly reviewed easily, so all
that is good, and very important for us.
On the other hand, now marketing is thinking about moving to online help.
Since I have the Tech Suite, I have RH included within my tools.
Do you think Webworks would justify its expense, or what advantage would it
have, if any over RH 2020?
To be fair, I understand that Adobe revamped RH from scratch, so I'm hoping it
can do a fine job (haven't tested it yet, but on the other hand, I haven't used
any online tools yet either).
Just checking to see what added advantages you, or if anyone else would like to
chime in) think Webworks has.
Thanks,

Re: [Framers] Framers Digest, Vol 187, Issue 7-. Re: Why so many of us feel the way we do about Adobe

2021-10-17 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
I've been monitoring this conversation and just wanted to chime in...

I don't mean to disregard your complaints at all - but, I personally haven't
had any serious problems with FM.
I had a very annoying FM-to-PDF problem a few months ago. The Adobe engineers
reached out to me and helped me solve it.

I only recently returned to using FM about 2 years ago after about a 4-yr
hiatus. My company bought it based on the engineers requests - before I even
got there.
Prior to those 4 years, my company dealt with all installation problems and
they obviously footed all upgrade bills.

Now that I'm at a startup I had thought about using LaTeX for a bit - since
it's free and the engineers like that as well as Markdown. LaTeX would be a
learning curve. That is, I would need to learn how to create a book from a
number of files, use X-refs, variables and conditions the way we use in FM, if
they exist at all.

While I don't think it's worth my time, it might be worth my time if we needed
online help - because those same LaTeX files would be able to be used as the
files for the basis of a static site generator for online help.

For now - our customers are used to getting PDFs and are happy with the output.
So I'm happy with FM - it's still the simplest, yet most robust and stable
option I have for creating books.

Regards,
Orly

Well ... I don't bash FrameMaker because of its capabilities, but I do bash
them for the upgrade pricing changes over the years.

For me to see the benefits of stability that Reng Winfried says is now
available (since FM 7), would require paying for a full FM license - eek!

Of course, I do not like subscription models ... this last evolution guarantees
that I will not update from FM 12. When that stops working for whatever reason,
*good*! I am not using it much anymore anyway ...

To answer your other question, yes, I have an alternative ... works "for my
purposes". I emphasize "for my purposes" since it is not for everybody, of
course!

My current flow is LaTeX using the TeXStudio editor.

Not WYSISYG, but ... one click gets me PDF output in a window on the side.
*And*, I can click on the PDF, and TeXstudio opens the *specific* file with the
LaTeX source, and puts my cursor right where I need it!

Consistent output? Yes. Many people have provided all the necessary add-ons for
just about any standardized technical format that you might ever want.

Large books? Yes. No issues with multiple-hundred-page documents for me. I keep
my chapters and re-usable text paragraphs in separate source files, so they can
be re-used in other "books" too.

Variables? Of course! Defined at the top level or wherever, and these can be
over-ridden in a given source file for local use.

Equations? Beautiful! but you do have to spend a tiny amount of time learning
how. After that curve (it is not tough), LaTeX and TeX have better equation
output than *any* other tool I have ever seen ... for technical documents, this
is perfect!

Tables? Yes. But you do have to get used to doing them without WYSIWYG ... the
rapid PDF generation is what makes it work for me!

Help files? I do not know. I have not tried creating these from LaTeX at all
(since I don't need them), but I would be surprised if this is difficult to
make happen!

And, best of all, the price is right: my current flow is FREE ... ?

Z

P.S. My latest infuriating issue is Acrobat Pro. Which seems to want to check
its license status with Adobe far too often, does not "get through" to whatever
system it is trying to reach, and stops working till I restart my computer or
reboot my router or stop using it for a while!

This is helping me move to FlexiPDF faster ... frankly, the next time that
Acrobat Pro stops, it will no longer be the default tool selected in Windows
for PDF files.

HI Paul,
The Assistant font normally doesn't create any problems.
Only when I need the images with the transparencies, then the text is erratic.
I replace the text with an Adobe font (Adobe Clean) - assuming Adobe should

This solution did not help - text is still off.
Any other ideas will be appreciated.

HI All,
I'm running FM2020 on a Windows 10 system.
My 4-page file (a brochure) includes some text (Fonts: kelson/assistant/etc)
and graphics with transparencies.
Due to this latest FM version, I can finally, easily create a matching PDF with
lovely graphics. (Background: In previous FM versions the transparencies were
blacked or whited out. I could run do some fancy programming on the reference
pages to fix, but this solution didn't work when I had too many graphics on the
same page - it was complicated).

Now my problem is that I can either get all the graphics right or all the text
right, but apparently, not both.
I use the "Publish" to PDF option.

  * When I use the Standard job option (or variation thereof) - the text
comes out fine, but the transparencies for the figures is shot.
  * When I use the High Quality Print job option - the figures come out fine,
but the text (some of the bulleted lines with "Assistant" text come out
squished or even misplaced - it's very weird.
How do I combine both of these into a single job option?

Notes:

  * The Distiller PDF settings don't seem to know that the Assistant font is
installed. But they are located in my Windows>Fonts folder
  *   I have the FM>Print Setup>Properties: "Rely on System Fonts Only... "
checkbox UNCHECKED

[Framers] FM to PDF Text or Graphics Transparency Problem - JobOptions Issue (STS)

2021-06-14 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
I'm running FM2020 on a Windows 10 system.

  *   I have the FM>Print Setup>Properties: "Rely on System Fonts Only... "
checkbox UNCHECKED
Thanks,
Orly

[Framers] Save as PDF - Do not rely on System Fonts

2021-04-11 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
Allison's recent question - about the old SetPrint reminded me of a problem I
currently have. I'm running FM2020 (from the Adobe Technical Suite) on a new HP
EliteBook 84 G6 (Intel core i5-8265U @1.6GHz<mailto:i5@1.6GHz>) with 8GB of
installed RAM. No problems with processing times or open pod issues. FM works
fine, thank goodness.

My problem:
I use Kelson family fonts for my cover/back pages. These fonts, for some
reason, don't embed in the file.
When I quickly want to create a PDF, I'll use the "Save as PDF" File option.
Invariably, the PDF conversion process (via Distiller) gets flushed.
To solve the problem, I need to uncheck an option "Do not rely on system fonts"
which can be found only in the Adobe Print settings.
And I need to reset this each time I restart FM.
Any ideas on how to avoid this slightly annoying problem.

Many thanks! And have a great week,
Orly

[Framers] Rendering embedded Visio with shading/pattern fill from FM to PDF problem

2020-12-27 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All, I'm currently running FM16 - 2020 via the Adobe Technical Suite.I have
a number of Visio's embedded in my chapters. I've noticed that if some of the
Visio items use shading or pattern fills, this does not translate well to PDF.
(I get black or white boxes completely obliterating parts of the image).Maybe
I'm using the wrong PDF setting to get these to show properly ?Or is it that I
just can't use Visio OLE objects with shading/pattern fill via FM?

Also, the OLE image, viewed in the FM itself is a little off, but the PDF is
completely illegible.Any ideas?

Thanks and Happy Holidays to all!Orly

Re: [Framers] Open Excel from FM - Framers Digest, Vol 171, Issue 7

2020-06-18 Thread Orly Zimmerman

This email is in response to David's response to my query - the digest lost his
formatted message apparently, also omitting his details.
===

HI David,
It's not onerous at all to manually attach the XLSX file to the PDF after
generating. That's exactly what I do. But, that implies that the user
 a. knows there is an Excel file attached to the PDF.
 b. knows where to find the attachment to open it.
They may not be aware that there is an attachment pane that can be opened.

I would like to have a spot on the page where the reader can click and open the
Excel file directly from the page. Alternatively, as you suggested, I could
embed the sheet as an OLE object (as I do with my Visio figures), but it's
really too large for my page (it's an ASIC pinlist with different colors for
the different balls - sort of like a map).

Mind you, I can also, deliver the PDF and Excel sheet separately, and as long
as the user has both files in the same folder, then I can have the reader click
a PDF link (directly from anywhere on a page) and the Excel file will open in
Excel - all this is controlled with a simple hypertext message marker and works
well, however, I can't control delivery to customers that way. It might be ok
for my internal readers.

Maybe there are other solutions out there yet?
Thanks,
Orly

I'm trying to use a HotSpot graphic box - where I populated the URL destination
as: //filename.xlsx

So, when I get my PDF, it asks me if it's ok to open the file and I "allow" it.
But the file doesn't open. The file is in the same folder as the PDF file.

Any ideas how I can do this?
I don't care if it's not via the hotspot properties, but I would like the Excel
file linked somehow to the PDF.
If I could embed the Excel file within the FM file - that would be best -
assuming it would allow opening the Excel via the generated PDF.

Thanks,
Orly

David's response:

Is it too onerous to manually attach the XLSX file to the PDF after generating?
I'd have to play around and research whether a link can be made in Pro to an
attachment. That too would be manual, presumably. Another thought: embed the
XLSX in a frame as an object? Weird need! Good luck, DavidDCA:d.a.d

[Framers] Problem with Creating Tables with different TableTitles in FM via MIF file.

2020-05-03 Thread Orly Zimmerman
 HI Rick,
Yes, that is the code used, or some variation of it. It works if the file is
its own file (i.e. not split).
If the file is split into the MIF template being called from the MIF with the
text flow and Tbls then the table title is on its own (i.e. in FM I see "Table
1: " with no name for the table) - where/how does it get populated?

Here is a copy of the beginning of the Tbls code: ( I can supply the code, but
it's too long for here).

#orly Adding next line with Table Format-this is not needed if I don't need the
TableTitle populated. It pulls the format from the template MIF. If I copy the
table, it even numbers them correctly, but I can't figure how to get text into
them. The string below with the example Register Name doesn't show in FM.

#Adding Table Title
 # Forces lookup in Paragraph Catalog.
#even without this line, the table shows up in FM
with "Table 1: " as its title

> # end of ParaLine
> # end of Para
> # end of TblTitleContent
> # end of TblTitle
> #end of TblFormat

>
> # end of Para
> # end of CellContent
> # end of Cell

#... it goes on to end the rows and cells properly. As well as end the Tbls.

[Framers] Problem with Creating Tables with different TableTitles in FM via MIF file.

2020-04-30 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
I'm trying to create a simple MIF file that contains tables and can be read via
FM.
I need this structure for my engineers, so that they can export data in a
pre-defined table format.

So I have the structure of the table (basically copied the structure given by
one of FM's Sample MIF files (included with the FM installation)).
In any case. Then I actually read the MIF manual and was able to create the
table and a short body page by creating 2 MIF files.
 - One MIF file is used as the template file with all my
paras/chars/tables/variables/master pages/ etc defined. (It's very long)
 - The other MIF file includes for now, one table (it will include all the
tables in the Tbls) and the Text Flow. The table is built basically from a
table header and body rows. It has an "include ( template.mif) to call the
template file (so that this MIF file is "only" about 300 lines long and easy
for my developer to follows its syntax so that s/he can auto generate tables
from their database into FM - and the developer doesn't have to deal with
unnecessary defs). This will be used to create all the ") and then
define exceptions to the Table Format by giving the statement name for the
specific property and then redefining it. i.e. create a local definition
(instantiation) based on the Table catalog definition. (The MIF manual gives an
example of redefining the number of columns and then adjusting their width -
there is nothing about the table title property).
For some reason this does not work with the TableTitle. Any ideas why not?

Thanks so much,
Orly Zimmerman

[Framers] Can I Embed an Excel file in PDF via FM

2020-02-13 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All, I would like to embed an Excel file (not table) in the PDF via FM and
then access it via a hyperlink command in the document. . I can create a link
to an Excel file that is delivered in addition to the PDF, but not attached to
the PDF - natively in the FM doc.
I can also, with Acrobat Pro simply attach a file to the generated PDF and
create a PDF bookmark to open the attached file - but my client can't since he
only has FM wtihout the Acrobat Pro.
Is there a way to do this directly from FM? Thanks,Orly

[Framers] How to format source code in FM

2019-12-31 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All, I have a document in Markdown (md) that I was asked to convert to FM.
I can do it quickly using wildcards, regexs and scripts.
All is fine and good, except when I get to source code. The source code is
formatted extremely nicely and clearly (with different colors for commands,
comments, etc and also with code line numbers) in the MD file. I can't come
close to it in FM without using a fair share of different, newly created para
and char tags, etc. This is extremely frustrating because I can take the text
and simply plunk it into Notepad++ and it gets formatted properly depending on
the language I choose. Perhaps there is a secret setting somewhere in FM, that
FM can read this code and understand how to format it? and save me loads of
time.
I prefer not creating a JPG or BMP of the code - because then the info won't be
searchable in the PDF. Many Thanks for any ideas :)Happy New Year!Orly Zimmerman

[Framers] Changing Setup Files

2019-12-10 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All, I'm currently running FM2017 version.I would like to update the
configuration files so that I can use shortcut keys like I did in earlier
versions of FM - for example, repeat last para command, or select all
conditional text around cursor (SelectSameCondTags) - which it seems that Adobe
removed for some reason. Also, they moved many things around.
I'm being very careful about the changes I'm making to the various cmd files.
Of course, before I change any of the cfg files, I make a copy, just in case...

My Qs: 1. I saw that the FM developers added a note asking us to be careful
when assigning the F10 key to something, because Windows uses that key for
different things-  anyone know what its commonly used for?  BTW - The Adobe
developers mention "For documentation on this file, see the on-line manual
"Changing Setup Files"." - for the cmds.cfg file in the general configui
folder. - but I can't find this manual.
2. Which cmd file can/should I change - if I'm working in non-structured  -
probably the wincmds.cfg in the configui/UnStructured/WYSIWYGView/ folder -
right?

3. If I want to use a command that is already in place - for example, in FM2107
- the F7 key is used to find command shortcuts - but I want to use F7 for
something else (related to conditional texting) - what happens if I use the F7
in both places?
Thanks!OrlyZ

[Framers] Converting Markdown (.md) files to FM

2019-11-28 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
My client gave me Markdown and PDF files.
Does anyone know a way to convert markdown files into FM and retain their
formatting? I know I can import the MD files directly into FM using the Text
converter - but that leaves them unformatted - the PDF looks really nice.
He wants the files in FrameMaker so that we can create a book easily and also
continue to maintain the cross-refs to online registers, apart from the FM
specialties of conditional text, etc.I can make simple scripts to convert, item
by item, but a conversion tool would probably be best.

Thanks,OrlyZ

Hi everyone,

I've come across this strange behavior of Frame where if I insert a paragraph
at the beginning of a text flow, Space Before does not seem to be taken into
account. I have to use empty carriage returns to create white space before a
major heading at the beginning of a flow, for example. Am I missing something?
As always grateful for any help received.

Problem opening XML file in new FM12 Installation

2015-05-05 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
I just upgraded to FM12 and am using Structured FM files.
Files that are already in structured FM are ok and all my plugins work fine.
My problem is with a certain type of XML file that I try to open in FM.
This file is used as the main file to put together a number of XML files. The
file uses a schema and schema instance

These are the first few lines of the file:
(no extra whitespaces anywhere)

?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?
!DOCTYPE book SYSTEM bookCHG.dtd
book xmlns:xs=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema;
xmlns:xsi=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance;
xmlns:fn=http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions;

This is the error I get when opening in FM:

XSLT Processor Messages
org.xml.sax.SAXException: FWK005 parse may not be called while parsing.
javax.xml.transform.TransformerException: org.xml.sax.SAXException: FWK005
parse may not be called while parsing.
javax.xml.transform.TransformerException: org.xml.sax.SAXException: FWK005
parse may not be called while parsing.
Transformation Aborted.

The maker.ini file has SAXON disabled, and I'm using XALAN for the XSLT
processor.

Thanks,
Orly

RE: framers Digest, Vol 114, Issue 15 - Re: Limit Find/Change

2015-04-23 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI John,
I do this often when converting between different templates.

But I use FM's Find dialog box with Wildcards turned on and with Consider Case
turned on.
I do a search for Body para tag by entering ^Body$ when searching for Paragraph
Tag.
The carat (^) defines the beginning of the search sting and the dollar sign ($)
defines its end, so that you don't find other para tags beginning with Body,
such as Body Text or BodyBeforeList.
Since FM's search is case sensitive, I also turn on the Consider Case button
- just to be on the safe side.

Then I continue to Change the Body para tag to Body Text para tag By
Pasting the Body Text para tag (assuming you did a special copy Paragraph Tag
while standing on that P tag).

Hope this helps,
Orly

Hi, guys...I'm putting in a couple of days to clean up some inconsistencies in
my documentation template and styles.

I currently use the P style Body Text (no quotes) for normal body text.

However, in the past, I'd used the P Style Body (no quotes) and I want to do
a Paragraph tag search on Body to clean it out. However, it also finds Body
Text which I don't want.

How do I limit the search to just Body?

Thanks

How to Create Bibliography in FM?

2014-12-11 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
I have been given a task to create a bibliography for an article I'm writing. I
would like to use Framemaker, but I have no idea how I get all the footnotes on
the last pages of the file or in an appendix file as opposed to on the page
where the footnote was created.

I don't mind writing out the Bibliography entry (I understand that there are
different formats - as long as I stick to one format, I just add them as I
create the article). Now I'm up to 6 different bib's. I'll cite it from page 1,
and then cite from page 3 (using an x-ref in Footnote style); so page 3 needs
to go back to page 1 to see the footnote. This doesn't look right. And I will
probably site the same footnote later on in the doc as well.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
Orly Zimmerman

Fameusers: Mixed Structured / Unstructured and xrefs

2014-11-02 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Lin,
We have a similar process, where we generate FM files from XML sources for our
chip register files. They are structured FM files. The functional specs for the
same book are unstructured files. We run FM in structured mode.
Auto cross ref's work as they should - assuming they have the right elements to
refer to.
The files exist together fine in the structured environment. I had to tweak the
headers on the Master pages to get the TOC right, but that works ok too.
If you already have the files in structured FM with all the links working, I
don't see why you can't have them co-exist with the unstructured files in FM.
The engineers can get used to structured FM. Maybe create a small training
session for them.
HTH,
Orly

BookMifWash supplied with Adobe FM10

2012-09-24 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
In response to my own post from yesterday...
The menu was indeed there, unfortunately, I didn't see it until one of the 3
Adobe engineers that responded to this post pointed out correctly that while
you are focused on the book file, a completely new menu item - Book Utilities -
appears in the menu. I was looking for the menu item under the File menu
(assuming it to be there from previous pre-incarnations of this DLL - for those
who remember).
FYI, there is also an option to open all book files silently, without any
warnings or pop-ups - very nice!
++Kudos++ to Adobe for helping out so quickly and efficiently.
Orly.
==

My previous post:

HI All,
As you all probably know (maybe you didn't know), FM10 comes with a few sample
ExtendScripts.
One of the samples includes giving the user the ability to install a DLL, such
that when you open an FM book file, you have a menu item offering a MIF wash on
the book.

Now, I thought I installed it according to its directions - i.e. copy the DLL
to the fminit folder in the Adobe, FM10 directory on my computer, and then add
a line to the maker.ini file under API clients. Simple enough.
But upon reopening FM10 in a book file - no menu item appears. I restarted my
computer as well, just to check and that didn't help either.
What am I doing wrong?

One thing I suspect is that there is a c file with lots of programming stuff in
it. Seems like I need to do something with that file and I don't know what.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Orly.

RE: Can't Get Delete Empty Pages to stick (Alison Craig)

2012-07-15 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Alison,
One thing I find that usually helps, apart from everything everyone else
suggested (i.e. the pagination issues) is to first save the file and then run
the Format Page Layout Apply Master Pages to the file with the extra pages.
This usually solves the problem, especially if I got the extra pages after
hiding some conditions. Usually, Save, deletes the extra pages, but not when
special Master pages are used.

Lastly, if nothing else works, then why don't you just use the SpecialDelete
Pages option. Just make sure that there is really nothing on the empty pages.
Verify this by viewing the end-of-file marker on the last page that you're
*not* deleting.

Hope this helps,
Orly.

The attached booklet is giving me fits (I've emptied the files of content, but
left placeholders so the layout is identical to the booklet with content).

The problem is Appendix B. No matter what I do, I can't get the Pagination
option Delete Empty Pages to stick.

I've tried at both the book and file level. I've used Special Delete Pages.
I've imported Page Layouts and Document Properties from a file that does work.
But it never sticks.

I even tried recreating the file by copying Appendix C over Appendix B, then
copying in new content and re-adding the file to the book. That didn't fix it
either.

Whenever I Update the file it always reverts to Make Page Count Even.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Importing Math Equations from Word 2010

2012-06-20 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
We have math equations that we get from the engineers in MS Word docsuments.
We usually need to copy these equations into our unstructured FM files for the
customer.
We're currently on Win7 OS and FM10.

-When we copy equations from Word docs (that were created in Word 2003,
then saved as Word 2010), into FM (Special PasteEmbedded Object), then all is
fine and you can double click the equation, open it and continue to edit as a
Word object if needed. I'm assuming these equations were written using Math
Type or Equation Editor 3.0

-However, when we import equations from Word files originally created
in Word 2010 (it seems Word has its own equation editor), then when importing
(Special PasteEmbeded Document Word Microsoft Object ) into FM, then we get
loads of question marks and H's as opposed to the equation. If we double click
on the equation, it opens properly in Word 2010. Saving the page as PDF shows
only the question marks.

Using any of the other special paste options turns the equation into an image.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the equation to show properly in FM?

Thanks,
Orly.

RE: framers Digest, Vol 77, Issue 11

2012-03-18 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Joel and others,
Regarding the footnotes, Klaus's idea makes the most sense, i.e., creating a
cross-reference to the last row of the table.
I was wondering if any of you reference your footnotes in another way.
I suggested putting the footnotes - as references, but in a Footer row, as
opposed to the last row of the table. The footer row, like the Heading row,
repeats on each page of the table. This way, the reader does not lose their
place in the table and can just glance down to the bottom of the table to see
what the footnote is referring to.

This obviously depends on how much space you're willing to give up on your page.
Depending on the type of table and info, this may be more useful and easier for
the reader.

I would be happy to hear what others think of this idea.
Best Regards,
Orly.

I want to put my table footnotes in the last row of the table and I can't see a

Apologies if this has been asked before - I attempted to search the archives
and didn't see any good way to do it.
I want to put my table footnotes in the last row of the table and I can't see a
good way to do it. Does anyone have a method? Thanks,

Joel

F9 Keyboard Shortcut not working (FM10, WinXP)

2012-02-23 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Deanne,
Yes, this is indeed a big problem.
I didn't realize it was a problem until I was sitting with an engineer, who's
time is very precious and I'm trying to update my text according to his edits,
as we proceed and I couldn't proceed because I couldn't get the shortcuts to
work. F8 and F9 are really fundamental to my work, as well as the Control-4/5/6
used for conditional.
Ultimately, I had to have him wait for me to close FM and restart to get
everything back to normal again. Very frustrating!!
I think this is an unreasonable bug that Adobe should really have fixed - it
used to work fine, it should work fine now too!!

I'm on FM10, but in Win7.
Best Regards,
Orly.

In our department, a few of us have experienced temporary loss of the keyboard
shortcut F9 (apply paragraph format) from time to time. As of this week, I have
lost all use of it, even though I retain use of F8 (select character format).
What gives? Is this a bug? How does one get F9 back? I searched through Adobe
help, found no help (could not anticipate what they were thinking).

Thank you.

RE: Custom Table Footnote options

2011-07-04 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Jeremy,
Thanks for your response.

Unfortunately, the \x codes you suggest do not result in anything useful. (I
just get these x2663666560676261, numbers posing as symbols)

The reason I got a germandbls for \xa7 is because that is what is defined for
the FM standard character set. (Note additionally that \xa8 = registerserif,
\xa9 = copyrightserif, \xaa = trademarkserif from the FM char set).

I don't understand why I cannot find similar sequences (or codes) to the *\d\D
, or where it is documented).

In any case, if I do look at what the FM documentation states, I don't have too
many options for Table footnote symbols because I cannot assign the Symbol or
Dingbats font to the symbol in the Table Footnote numbering properties.

Do you suppose this can be done in the FM ini or configuration files?
Thanks,
Orly.

and then a double dagger for my footnote symbols
in that order.

Those are the Frame dialog box codes, which work in
all Frame versions, Unicode (8 up) or not (7 down).

I tried inserting \xa7 \ax8, \xa9 and \xaa and got
a Beta, then a few copyright symbols and then a
register trademark symbol - but what I wanted were
club, diamond, heart and spade.

Not sure why you got that; should have been section
mark, dieresis, copyright, and feminine ordinal.
Those codes would give you the suits in the Symbol
font, but AFAIK you can't specify font for those
symbols.

Does anyone know how I can get a proper list of
options for defining these Custom symbols for table
footnotes? I've checked the character sets but FM
doesn't seem to use the standard char sets.

Use the Unicode for the chars: \x2663 \x2666 \x2665
\x2660 for the solid symbols, \x2667 \x2662 \x2661
\x2664 for the hollow ones.

I'm currently using FM8 from TCS1 on WinXP SP2

For FM8 and above, Unicode code points should work.
Haven't tested this specific usage, though. ;-)

RE: Custom Table Footnote options

2011-07-04 Thread Orly Zimmerman
Hi All,
Ok, so we've established that the Unicode for, say, a black spade, is 2660,
according to all sources so far.
In the Table Footnote Custom dialog box, when I enter
2660
, it thinks they are just numbers. The first footnote gets a 2, the second a 6,
etc.

When I enter:
\x2660
in the dialog box, FM returns
60
And the same thing happens, the first footnote gets a , the next a 6, etc.

If I look on the BabelMap thing - the box holding the 2660 character just shows
an empty box, while its label is U+2660 BLACK SPADE SUIT

Can someone explain what is going on here and why I don't/can/'t see the black
spade on my computer.

Thanks,
Orly.

[FrameUsers] Cannot save one or more files in the book

2011-06-30 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Yves,
Yes, I get this message a lot. I have tried researching this and not found a
reason or solution.
I'm running FM8 on WinXP SP2 from the Adobe TCS1.0 with 3GB.
What I usually do, is just ask FM not to save the file and then re-open it and
everything is fine (I may have to adjust the conditions again to match the
book).
This error message usually appears for the first file of my book and usually
when I first save change conditions, and then update the book and then try to
save the book.
Best Regards,
Orly.

Hi group

Fm 9.0p255 + Windows 7, 64-bit + Subversion

I have a large Fm book (166 files, 1200 pages). When I update my book and all
generated files (toc, lof, lot, ix), I sometimes get an error message saying
cannot save one or more files in the book. Is happens sometimes and the
files which cannot be saved are different each time the error occurs.

Has anyone else seen this?

[FrameUsers]: Looking for the best way to highlight text to the reader

2011-06-30 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Fei,
We also use the AXCM plug-in for the colors and I understand why you don't want
to use the over/underlines or other lines in addition to color.

I do recall one of our other teams using a script to add the tag name (i.e.
Product1) to the beginning of each text that uses that conditional tag. In this
way, you could leave your colors for your customers who are not color blind and
would appreciate the coloring, and have a text delineation as well - to
indicate what product is being discussed.
(You know also that you can leave the coloring in the PDF and define the PDF to
print only black and white).

Alternatively, you could search per condition and apply a different font or
font size or some other character change - although that would look funny (it
might be ok for some things) - here, however, the search and replace would be
ridiculously simple - Search (even throughout the entire book) for ConditionA
and replace by PASTING a character tag (you could define font 10, Arial Narrow
as opposed to Arial, or underline, or whatever). Obviously, you should test it
first so nothing goes wrong.
Best Regards,
Orly.

Structured FrameMaker 7.2 on Windows XP, AXCM version 2.01, and FrameScript.

I have some manuals that are going to be published separately for different
products. I'm using an attribute value for conditional text, and the AXCM
plug-in to color and filter the manuals. Normally, I remove colorizing for
the final publication, but this time, the program manager wants to show the
differences. We want to avoid using color in case someone decides to print
the manuals (yes, we still ship PDF as well as HTML). AXCM offers underlining,
double underlining, overlining, strikethrough, and revision bars in addition
to colors. I'm not completely satisfied with any of these solutions because
the underscores in some words gets lost with the underlining, and it gets a
bit messy when you have a whole page underlined. On the other hand, revision
bars look a bit like it's a draft and it doesn't show what changed on a line.
Can anyone think of some alternatives considering the tools I have at my
disposal? For example, is there any way to change the revision bar to another
character or characters?

might be ok for some things) - here, however, the search and replace would be
ridiculously simple - Search (even throughout the entire book) for ConditionA
and replace by PASTING a character tag (you could define font 10, Arial Narrow
as opposed to Arial, or underline, or whatever). Obviously, you should test it
first so nothing goes wrong.
Best Regards,
Orly.

Deleting Empty Paragraphs

2011-06-13 Thread Orly Zimmerman
Scratch That,
Even though it finds the tables, it actually leaves them intact when searching
and replacing this way.

HI All,
I'm trying to delete empty paragraphs from a file I imported from Word. A simple
\P\p
or
^\p
in the find box using wildcards does fine, except if my empty para is an anchor
para with a table anchor in it. It seems FM doesn't see the table anchor.

I have a script that deletes empty paras as well, but that left me with empty
paras that were a level 3 or 4 Heading.

And yes, I already did a MIF wash. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Orly.

Re: FM8 crashing like it's Word

2011-05-15 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
I have been struggling with this problem for a while too and always thought
that I just did not have enough memory.

In any case, now I have 3GB RAM and it still crashes too often.
FM 8 (p.277) from the Adobe Technical Suite 1.0 on a laptop, Windows XP, 32 bit
system, 2.53 GHz CPU, 3 GB RAM - I did see an improvement (i.e. fewer crashes)
when I moved from 2GB RAM to 3GB RAM, but FM still crashes too often.

There are two types of crashes - one, apparently when there are obvious missing
cross references - because there have been systematic crashes when
opening/closing my Revision history chaps - which are always short chapters
with no figures, but lots of x-refs (always in tables) and some are always
hidden, due the nature of our books. I understand that there is a bug that
reports these hidden x-refs in tables as unresolved when updating the book (as
reported by the error log file). If I do a search for unresolved x-refs in my
book, however, no unresolved x-refs are found.

The other type of crash has to do with whether I have embedded visios - this
apparently can drive FM crazy - although I'm not sure why. I try to save the
visios with the latest Visio version I have on my laptop -assuming this will
help for some reason.

If all else fails, usually, a MIF wash solves the problem, so I have scripts to
save all my book files as MIFs and save all the MIF's back to FM.

BR,
Orly.

Hi Lea,
Regarding your message below, this was a problem in FM 5,and maybe FM6.
If I'm not wrong, this was fixed in FM 7 - if not FM7 then definitely by FM8.
I use it now (FM8) and it works fine- in fact, for some things I do - SAVE AS
PDF is the preferred way to print.

Have a great day!

Hi Art,

Sadly, regardless of the fact that Adobe has owned both Frame and Acrobat for
quite a while, the collective wisdom on this list is that ?Save as PDF? should
not be used. Ever. Many folks have posted problems with this feature ranging
across four versions of Frame that I know of, and I?m a relative newcomer. A
few people have posted that it works for them, and more power to them. For
myself, I?ve given up ever even attempting it.

YMMV,

RE: Need Advice on Upgrade Strategies for FM and Acrobat

2011-02-14 Thread Orly Zimmerman
Hello Jasmine,
Our SME/Engineers are routinely given FM to draft documents.
We have set up a template for them to use (unstructured FM) and if they are so
inclined to help, this usually works very nicely.
The template is firstly setup with the types of headings and some sort of
general statement of how to populate the heading - eg - 1- unit name - 2-
overview- 3 features 4- signal descriptions 5 theory of operation 6
programming 7 limitations - etc.
Secondly, the FM template is setup for ease of use.

One thing we do - is use para tag names that the engineers will understand -
for example - BodyBeforeList which is exactly what it implies. And while this
is an unstructured file, the next para is defined as a Bullet tag - so that
they actually can get a bulleted list (should they need a numbered list, then
we would explain to them to change that tag to Numbered1 whereby Numbered is
the next tag - and so on.

Now, if I were creating the template for FM Tech Writers, the tag name would be
BBL or b4list or some shortened version whereby I could use shortcut keys - to
format, but, from experience, I can tell you that the engineers don't like to
remember keyboard shortcuts. F8/F9 are hard enough to get them to remember.

Tables are already setup in the template. There was some special table we used
that already had some cells straddled with different para tags in the relevant
places, so that we put on the reference page - they can copy from the ref page.

If you use conditional text, the other - very important thing I would make sure
they know and understand, is to always work with **all** conditions showing -
and give them a lengthy explanation on how to use conditions.

I could go on and on...

In other words, if you set up the template for easy use, it makes their and
your job easier.

As far as upgrades and Acrobat - you'll probably have to get the latest FM for
the engineers -they most likely don't need the TCS. In the past, I think that
single FM licenses came with Acrobat Distiller installed, then the SMEs can
create PDFs which is basically all they need from Acrobat. I don't know how
Adobe sells the packs now.

Best of Luck,
Orly.

Try this trick: rotate the table 180 degrees (or put it in a frame and rotate
the frame), then rotate the cells individually 180 degrees again.

Then you have a table upside down but text is straight and numbering should
begin at the bottom.

Yes, it would be helpful to know your filename, however, try checking your

Hi,

I have FM 7.1 and RH 8 installed on my Windows XP system. Whenever I try to
import a frame mif, I get an error which says something like Failed. Invalid
character in filename. My files do not contain any special characters.

What could be the cause?

What could be the filename? :-)

You're more likely to get some help if you tell us the exactly what the error

framers Digest, Vol 62, Issue 18 - Issue while importing FM 7.1 mif file in RoboHelp 8

2010-12-19 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Neeraj,
Yes, it would be helpful to know your filename, however, try checking your
filename for more than one space. This once caused me to lose figures in the
file - it could make Robohelp hiccup as well.

Hi,

I have FM 7.1 and RH 8 installed on my Windows XP system. Whenever I try to
import a frame mif, I get an error which says something like "Failed. Invalid
character in filename". My files do not contain any special characters.

What could be the cause?

FM8 with SP3/FM9 SP3 or Windows7 - any problems?

2010-12-14 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
I was wondering if anyone knows how FM8 handles embedded Visios (OLEs) with
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) or how FM9 handles them.

Currently, we work with TCS-FM8 on Windows XP with SP2 and have a load of FM
files with embedded Visios.

As I understand, FM7 doesn't do well with this matter with SP3- I was wondering
what will happen if IT insists on upgrading us to SP3 or Windows 7.

We will have to change the way we work or is it not a problem?

TIA,
Orly.

I use this very handy utility http://www.stevemiller.net/puretext/

FM8 crashing upon showing all conditions.

2010-08-05 Thread Orly Zimmerman
Hello Everybody,
I'm really at a loss here.
I'm hoping someone can help.

I have a file (actually a few), which when I try to show all conditions crashes
the entire FM book. It also crashes when I open the file on its own and try to
show all conditions.
This usually happens with files that have a visio object embedded.
Or with my Revision History file which may have old revisions with x-refs that
are no longer relevant.

Apart from driving me crazy, I'm having incredible trouble (trouble's not the
word, I can't create PDFs this way) creating PDFs this way. My only alternative
is to send the corrupted file to a co-worker, have them open the file and then
save it with all conditions showing. (MIF wash does not help).

Any other ideas?
And yes, I've installed the Windows Hotfix - my IT fellow is at a loss too.

RE: SAving frame files with numbers at the end

2010-05-24 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Gillian,
I had this problem with files that were created with older versions of visio,
that were *embedded* in my fm file. I had this particular problem especially
when I tried changing the conditional text settings. In one of the individual
files, I had isolated the problematic figure and then had to delete it in order
to work with the file. I found an older copy of the figure in my backup files
somewhere.
For these files that you mention with the funny hex endings - if you open that
file in fm you'll see that one or more of you figures is shown as a grey box.
That may give a clue as to the corrupted figure.

As far as the books go, I also had trouble with saving books as PDF when
changing conditional text settings. I tried the windows hotfix, but was still
having other problems (I'm running XP/SP2- TCS 1.0). In the end, IT just
reformatted my disk - so everything so far is ok - haven't done major
book-building yet, then I'll know for sure if all is ok.

Debloat FM file with linked Visio sheets

2010-03-22 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
I'm trying to link figures to my FM file.
Originally, I had embedded the Visios, but this made the file about 30MB or
larger.
I've finally figured out how to link to different sheets of a single Visio
file, but still, there is one Visio causing the file to still be 10MB - whereas
the Visio file itself is 966kb and the FM file without any figures is also
around 317kb.

All the drawings are linked, even the one causing the file to blow up.
As an aside, I had noticed that one of my files was linked funny -then I
noticed that the sheet name included a slash - when I got rid of the slash, all
was ok. My current sheet that is causing me this grief is called HW so I
don't think it's the sheet name.

I'm running FM8 on the TCS
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Orly.

Possible Solution for Color Definition Cleanup

2010-01-16 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Fred,
We found that if you save the file as MIF and open in FM7 that you can delete
these unwanted colors in the MIF file. But if you're using conditional tags, in
FM8, the mixed tags will give mixed colors. I'm just hoping I never find two
colors that mix to give white :)
BTW, this is true also with the Deleted, Inserted and Hidden FM tags that FM
gives the file when saving as FM7 and then re-opening in FM8 (they are used
even if you don't use track changes) - you get some funny tags that you don't
see in your conditional text dialog box, but do show on the bottom of the
screen (where tag names are shown). This usually happens when the engineer used
all tags for some text except his/her product tag. It can get weird in some
places. I've written a bug about it to Adobe, but haven't seen any response.

Fred's correct, but I did notice that things changed slightly with W7. W7 32

RE: FM crashing upon attempt to create PDF - 3Qs

2009-11-11 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Art,
I print directly to the postscript printer called Adobe PDF which I think is
supplied with FM. I do not use the SAVE AS feature, just from habit (using FM
from version 5) although I understand that the feature currently works in FM8
and is actually needed when I use a third party app on FM.

As for my computer's guts...
I have 1.99GB of RAM, running at 1.83 GHz

My C drive also has 20 GB of free space - don't know if that makes a difference.

**A very interesting point and solution**, ===my IT fellow suggested moving
my files to a folder directly under my C drive, so that Adobe doesn't have to
deal with long folder names under a number of other folders.
This seems to have solved the problem, at least for the day.

Thanks for all your help!!
Orly Z.

How much RAM and free disk space do you have? Creating the PDF eats up a lot
and can trigger a crash if it runs out.

Also, you don't mention how you're doing it -- printing to the PDF logical
printer or trying to use SaveAs... which I think isn't as good as printing to
the Acrobat printer.

Yes, the hotfix works and doesn't seem to break anything, so it certainly
wouldn't hurt to roll it on.

RE: FM crashing upon attempt to create PDF - 3Qs

2009-11-11 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Art,
Why would moving the files eliminate the network delays?
The folder I placed the files on are on my C drive, but they are still
automatically backed up by the network - the other drive (with the longer name)
was also backed up automatically.

And, I always work with my book files open - I want to see what's happening,
and if I goof, this way I can just not save. Also, each time I made a change to
the book files (changed conditions or updated the book) I would save the files
at that step - perhaps this guzzled the precious free virtual memory.

Lastly, how would I know if my memories are marginal? I work on a laptop and
the IT people told me that I could not get more than 2G RAM on the laptop - I
would need to move to a PC.

Thanks,
Orly.

The other thing the move may have accomplished is eliminating any network

One other thing you may try is opening all files in the book before you do the
PDF, which should also eliminate any network issues.

The 2G RAM and kinda limited free space may be marginal if it's an incredibly
large book ... There's a lot of file swapping and temp file creation involved
in the process.

Hi folks,

I'm hoping the combined mega-brain that is the frameusers forum can
help me out with a problem...

I've just upgraded from Frame 7.2 to Adobe Tech Comms Suite 2 (Frame
9.0p237). I'm running Frame under Windows XP, SP2, using Parallels
Desktop 4 on my Mac (OS X 10.5.6). I have applied all the Adobe
updates to the Tech Comm Suite components.

Now, I can't print book files using the AdobePDF driver. Frame 9 gets
part-way through the job then crashes with an exception. This has also
broken my Frame 7.2 printing (I guess installing the new Acrobat Pro
stomped all over the existing Distiller/AdobePDF installation; job
options moved/disappeared, and so on).

 From Frame 9, I get:

Internal error 9004, 6920492, 9676798, 0. Framemaker has detected a
serious problem and must quit.

The FrameLog file has this (along with loads of text that probably
isn't helpful):

Internal Error: 9004, 5998149, 4768373, 4768714

Also, from Frame 7.2, as well as the ... must quit error, I get:

The instruction 0x0035199f referenced memory at 0x. The
memory could not be read.

I *can* print individual files (opened from the book, but printed from
the individual file, not the book's File menu).

I tried using a different PPD (a Postscript), but no dice.

I looked on the interweb and found a couple of things that looked
promising:

http://iconlogic.blogs.com/weblog/2009/02/adobe-framemaker-it-wasnt-my-fault.html

Tried trashing the font cache and rebooting: no joy; tried looking for
the Microsoft hotfix that supposedly restores balance in the universe:
you have to ask for it, rather than download it, and there only
appears to be an English version for XP SP4 - SP4 doesn't exist!

I'm stumped. If any of you guys can help. I would be very pleased.
BTW, I have also installed Toobar Express from Microtype, and the
customized toolbars that were made available recently by Klaus Daube
(free of charge, http://www.daube.ch/docu/fmaker55.html ). I may try
uninstalling those, to see if it helps (but I doubt it).

Thanks in advance,

Martin

2009-10-19 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,

We need to update the books we're working on by moving things around within the
book.
Now, if I want to move a table that is cross-referenced within the same chp to
another chp (i.e. we have table 1 in chp1, will move table 1 to chap2 - but
will still ref the old table 1 from chp 1 *and* from chp 2), is there a way to
keep the x-refs updated?

Thanks,
Orly.

smart quotes in XML?

2009-05-21 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
I'm using Adobe Framemaker 8 from the technical suite

Currently, we are converting our FM files into XML and then inputting info into
a database. From this database we will be creating our FM files again.

Now, in the XML file we noticed something strange that the smart quotes get
translated into some unintelligible letters - apparently the Unicode or
something.

Can anyone tell me what the Unicode for the begin, end smart double and single
quotes are, so that we may perform a search and replace to normal (straight)
quotes in the XML ?
Or how I would replace them?
In the future - we'll know to do this first in the FM - but for now we've
already begun working in XML and don't want to convert again.

Thanks
 Orly Z.

RE: Does FM crash on Large files on a regular basis?FM8 to FM7 to FM8 conditional text woes

2009-01-09 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
I thank you for your suggestions, however...
I am not at liberty to change the workflow of the docs.
Since many engineers use the same FM files to update the various info in the
files, the Visios must remain embedded OLEs (as Art rightfully corrected me)
for the engineers to update and not have to remember where to take what file
from or have the need to create graphics folders.

That said, after re-thinking/looking at the file and with Shlomo Peretz's help,
I realized that my real culprit was conditional text gone awry.
I'll explain, when I saved that FM8 file as FM7, it kept two conditional tags
created by FM8, but not accessible by FM8. My engineer, when he applied the
tags for some of the text in the file, put 2 tags as NOT IN - causing all the
rest of the tags to be applied to the text, which is not how I work the book
(yes, I know, I should have communicated this better to the engineer, in any
case).
In the meantime, I open the FM7 file in FM8 and save.
In order to fix the tag situation, I did Control-F7 to highlight all the
incorrectly tagged material. Then I de-applied the incorrect tags and thought I
had left only one conditional tag on the text. It should have been seen in
yellow, however the color did not change at all. Low and behold, below you see
the crazy FM8_Track_changes_deleted and FM8_Track_changes_added conditional
tags at the bottom status bar indicating these conditions are applied to my
text, but they do not appear in the conditional text dialog box.
So, in an effort to rid myself of this nusance - I tried to completely untag
the info (Control-6) - This only causes the text to now be marked as if track
changes deleted was on and mark it in red strikethrough.
So I play with it a little more, and then - wham - FM8 has lost all its senses
and decided to die on me.
I guess it didn't know what to do with those extra tags either, especially
since I didn't have track changes on and have never had track changes on in FM8
- just because the engineers have FM7 and cant' handle it.
(I may have confused the order of what I did - it was early this morning -
about 14 hours ago)

IN SHORT, the solution to this mess is to delete the extra tags in
**FM7**(there they are regular conditional text tags that can be
edited/deleted) - preferrably before the engineer gets hold of them, or at
least afterwards, before messing with the file.

Thanks again for your help.
Best Regards,
Orly.

I agree with you guys, but the client of the moment is using a
home-grown conversion program to generate HTML that requires GIFs or
PNGs. So I've been using them more than (my preference too) PNGs.

PDF retains the vector properties of the original and is highly portable.
If portability is not an issue and everyone is careful to only use
universally available fonts (since the file format embeds only the font
*name* and not the font itself), WMF works well for Visio graphics
 in my experience.

Does FM crash on Large files on a regular basis?

2009-01-08 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,
I have an FM file that is 14 MB with lots of Visio embedded drawings in
different conditionalized rows of the tables.
Now, I am trying to compare my last version of the doc with the newer version I
just got from the engineer who updated the file.
I am working in FM8, but had saved the file in FM7 for the engineer.
The engineer returned the file in FM7 format, which I opened in FM8. I did
nothing else to the file except open all the conditions in order to compare
with my previous file.

Now, each time I do a compare, FM crashes on me. The corrupted file (with the
.fm.c57 extension) shows that all the figs are corrupted.

Does anyone have a solution for this? Could it be a simple matter of adding
more memory to the computer?

My computer is running XP Pro, version 2002, SP2
"Genuine Intel(r) CPU
T2400 @1.83GHz
1.83 GHz, 1.99 GB of RAM"

HI Rebecca,
Did you try saving your file as MIF and then reopening the MIF file and saving
as FM.

Sometimes this helps.

Disappearing Symbol Characters

2008-07-23 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Ted,

I had the same problem.

This was the solution that I used given by Paul Schnall from one of my
other lists:

"I have had the same problem, and it is a little more work but I create
the letter using the visio drawing tools and then save it in my
favorites.

Now I just bring it into the visio file and place it where I like."

(OZ: I think it becomes a sort of custom shape - as far as Visio shapes
go)

You can look up the other suggested solutions in the FM Users' archives
under the subject: "visio fonts don't show in FM" (June 22 -25 2007)

FM won't let me type Shift-a char

2008-07-07 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,

Does anyone have any idea why my computer refuses to type a Capital A
(i.e. when I press Shift-A), nothing shows on the screen.

This only happens when typing in FM. All other applications are fine.

Thanks,

how to change PDF comment text font size?

2008-03-16 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,

This is probably more of an Adobe question, but someone here might know.

Is there any way to control the size of the text in the comments box
when commenting on Comment enabled PDFs?

A colleague would like to add names to a floor plan created in Autocad
and saved as PDF and write in the names of each person in the cubicle
using the PDF commenting feature. But our current text is too large for
full names. I tried using the EditPreferencesCommentingViewing
Comments. There is a possibilty there to change the font size, but it
doesn't seem to work for us.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Orly
