Re: [Framers] Document reflows when saving to PDF

2023-08-25 Thread rick
Thank you Mike! The issue is the behind the scenes switch to the Adobe PDF
printer driver when the PDF is created. The PDFs are created on a dedicated
computer, so I should be able to solve it by changing the default printer
driver to Adobe PDF.

Re: [Framers] Document reflows when saving to PDF

2023-08-24 Thread Mike Wickham
I hardly use FrameMaker these days, but as I recall, Times can hide on
reference pages and master pages, which require a separate search from
body pages. Times may also hide in imported objects. Another place that
unexpected fonts hide is in table titles. You insert a new table, but
don't need a title on it, so you turn the title off. But it's still
hiding there with an assigned font attached. (FM uses Times New Roman as
default there.) Finally, I think I remember that, if you print
registration marks, AdobePDF chooses Times as the font to print them.
There's nothing you can do about it, but I wouldn't think that would
cause reflow.

The most common cause of reflow , though, is not having AdobePDF set as
the default printer. If it's not set, then FM uses the font character
spacing of the driver for the printer that is set, but changes it when
you create the PDF. I'm sure that's not news to you.

Regarding Calibri reflowing, is it possible that the document could be
using a printer resident version of the font, then when you switch to
AdobePDF to print, it might be picking up a different, installed version
of the font instead? Again, that would assume that you don't have
AdobePDF as default printer. Looking in printer properties, there is an
entry for "TrueType Font" that lets you choose between "Download as
Softfont" or "Substitute with Device Font." The first is preferable
because it prevents substitutions with a font that might have an
identical name, but different metrics.

BTW, I am assuming that by reflow, you mean words move from one line to
another, changing lines and paragraph layout. But, if your issue is only
a reflow of line length, there is also a maker.ini setting,
"DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=On" that affects the placement of words on
the screen. It lets you choose between displaying characters optimally
(using the optimal number of pixels), at the expense of line length.
There are not enough pixels on screen to perfectly display characters
and the spacing between them, so FM has to either fudge the spacing
between them or fudge the line length.

When set to "On", the spacing between characters will not be accurate,
and the characters themselves might look a little rougher, but the
length of the line of characters will be accurate and everything will
print its best and with the layout you expect. When set to "Off," FM
optimizes the characters for clarity on screen at the expense of line
length. So lines of typed characters, at times, might even extend beyond
the margin, even though they won't print that way. If you are not
justifying text, you might not even notice this because you expect a
ragged right-hand margin. When you print, the printer has many more dpi
and gets it all right—but line lengths will not be what you saw on
screen. So "On" gives a closer preview of how the document will print.
"Off" makes characters look best on screen, but doesn't care so much
about how lines look.

I can't believe that I wrote all that.  I miss Framemaker!

I can't look at Distiller settings now, but look for a way to disable font
substitutions. Or, alternately, force Times to sub to Calibri.

Or save as MIF and search for the hidden Times (stuff gets set in weird places
other than just character and paragraph styles). Manually change to Calibri and
resave as FM.

Re: [Framers] Document reflows when saving to PDF

2023-08-24 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

What is your default printer in Windows?   Or are you allowing Windows
to control it for you?
If you don't have "Adobe PDF" configured as the default printer, then
FrameMaker may get font metrics based on the printer.

Are you using Windows Remote Desktop?  [AKA Microsoft Terminal Services
client, AKA MSTSC.exe]?

Are you sharing printers between your workstations?

But I suspect that your document may contain a paragraph format that
still references "Type 1" [PostScript] font.
You could save your FrameMaker document as MIF, and then open the MIF in
a good text editor like NotePad++ to locate the 'Times' font.
Alternatively, go to the FrameMaker preferences dialog Edit >
Preferences; and UNtick the "remember missing font names" check box.
When you reopen the document, FrameMaker will actively change any Times
font references to Times New Roman.
