This post was six years ago. Now Python 2 is end-of-live and Freevo
won't run on Python 3.x.. I myself switched to kodi years ago.

Whats left are some parts of the kaa library used by Freevo. I will
start porting useful stuff from kaa to Python 3 ... or copy code from
Tack who already did it. It may be useful for others and I will need it
myself to port some private code to Python 3. kaa.metadata is still very
useful for me.

So join me at https://github.com/freevo and keep some good parts active
and create new libraries. Maybe I will create a new project for kaa.

But Freevo itself is dead. Therefore, I will not renew the freevo.org
doamin and cleanup everything on sf.net. The "new" homepage will be
freevo.sf.net again. If you need to contact me, please use the github
page since this mail address will be invalid soon.

Bye and again: it was a good time!

2014-03-22 Thread Valerii Koval
Hi Dirk.
Thank you for your proposition.
I'm really want to try the Freevo2 and I hope you will help me in it.

I was a bit busy but now I'm ready to invest some time in Freevo2.

Here is the link on the doc where I'm going to make all notes:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MSl8gwyQi3Poj-xZ889WsT55WuocwLIcJxP7VrFcBmw/edit?usp=sharing

I will do that to allow someone after me ;) to do those steps faster and
easier.

As I understood from your answer of my previous mail I should install the
modules. I'm not sure I understood you properly.
Should I do something like
python2 setup.py install --root=$pkgdir install,

pack

kaa-base, kaa-display, kaa-imlib2, kaa-metadata, kaa-epg

modules into the distributive packages and install?

Should I add into my list of modules what I used for freevo1 any other
modules?
If yes in what way should I build them?

Please let me know what should I do now.

I'd pay your attention on next questions (according to your last response):
1. How to install and start Freevo2? Btw, I prefer to use the mplayer. Let
me know if you think I should shift to some other player.
2. How to configure it to use specific audio card / outputs?
3. How to configure it to use my RC with already known Windows OS key codes?
4. How to configure my instance of Freevo2 to use specific folders as the
input for Video/Audio/Photo sources?
5. Can I configure a couple of web radio channels how?
6. Can I configure a couple of iptv channels how?

Get the 2.0 source code from github as well as all kaa modules. On
install the modules will tell you about their additional requirements.

And, to not waste of my time please update me with a short review of
  mandatory features:

recorder (I have mpeg2 TV card)

Not integrated. The idea is to the tvheadend.

  video player (any formats)

 Works. Ether mplayer or gstreamer

  photo show

 Works

tv guide viewer + setter to record

 Again, no TV support yet.

USB (the Windows OS keys should be remapped) RC configuration.

 Works

Re: [Freevo-users] The future of Freevo(.org)

2014-03-08 Thread Pablo Casas

Hello everyone :

I think there are a lot more people using freevo than we think. I'm just
an user but, Freevo 1.9. really impressed me and has been my htpc
front-end for three years. It has fulfilled its role perfectly.Due to
its flexibility, It was the only front-end that could meet my purpose.
At this point, I have to say that I've spent _lots of hours_ reading and
understanding the localconf.py file and reading the freevo - wiki. I
had to learn how to activate modules and extracting information dealing
with a linux terminal, to organize an xml file with a text editor for
web radio listening, etc ... I think you know what I mean.

In my case, freevo has been a home-made arcade cab front-end. Due to a
mechanical switch, I could pass SVideo image signal from the cab to the
living room TV (another CRT TV). So my htpc was in fact a HT-arcade cab.
Freevo was the only front-end that can work perfectly and cope with
this, dealing with a resolution of 800x600 without errors in texts and
menus, even more, could be easily configured and managed with joysticks
devices and/or a HID interfaces (keyboards, remote controls or the
like). For me that was awesome.

My living room TV (CRT ) stopped working one week before the
announcement of Dirk , and I acquired a smart TV. Well, even with the
services that offers a smart TV, I decided to transfer the media center
functions from the arcade cab to a dedicated PC behind the led, and
perform a Freevo 1.9 installation from repositories on a fresh ubuntu
(12.04). Anyway, the result is that I can continue enjoying my freevo
media center to play videos, music and photos, launch firefox and other
applications from command menu, as well as emulators which a keyboard
control is needed (I have activated emulators plugin and configure fuse
(ZX Spectrum ) and DosBox). Nowadays I can not imagine lunching videos
and other stuff from nautilus... oh man, this is not cool at all.

So, thanks to all the people who have contributed in this great software.

Since there will be no more changes for the time being, how about a
last official release? Nothing fancy, just tarballs in the website
with a proper version number and a small README and INSTALL.

I never participate here, but I'm a Freevo fan too. It is still being
used, its just that there are so many other options now and more
actively developed too.

Re: [Freevo-users] The future of Freevo(.org)

2014-01-25 Thread James Trietsch
Well... heck.

My Freevo and I had gone rogue and been off the grid for a few years
now... I can't remember the last time I updated from SVN. I think I've
had the Freevo for nearly a decade at this point, from humble beginnings
in a beige mini-tower case with a keyboard for control, to it's current
digs in an Antec HTPC case with iMON VFD display and remote, recently
upgraded to allow full 1080i playback via the VGA connector to my
ancient rear-projection CRT HDTV.

In fact, I was gearing up to come back on the list with an interesting
announcement. I finally got tired of having to choose between Gray's
Anatomy or Glee on Thursday nights, plus having to take over the set-top
box to record was a less-than-ideal solution (but it worked great) and
sometimes I'd not notice it was recording and change channels or turn
off the box (meaning to turn it on). Plus, sometimes I'd _want_ to watch
TV, but there's a recording that needs to be done...

So back on Black Friday weekend, I picked up an HDHomerun Prime box from
Newegg on a discount. For those who haven't heard of it, it's a three
tuner CableCard box that runs over your network. Controlled over network
by your computer and throws back the raw MPEG-TS stream for saving or
streaming/viewing.

I've been on a total coding bender for the last three weeks or more.
I've written a recording plugin for the HDHomerun Prime that handles the
multiple tuners (and may theoretically work with any of the HDHomerun
boxes with small modifications). It also works around a flaw in the
firmware by setting up a ping to the HDHomerun box while recording,
keeping the stream to the Freevo from stalling or dropping.

I've re-written swaths of code in the recordingserver so it will now:

* Handle multiple simultaneous recordings for any given number of tuners
(reported by the recording plugin)
* Properly handle back-to-back recordings (delayed recordings where
end-time for one is start-time for another) when all tuners are in use
* Conflict resolution for any given number of tuners (still testing this
one, but early results are very promising!)
* Positive communication between recording server and recording plugin:
if the recording fails to start, we now know it. It will highlight
yellow in the web interface and the server will keep attempting to start
the recording every minute until it is successful or the program is over.

I also tweaked the thumbnail generator so it only pulls I-frames for the
.PNGs (instead of half-built P-frames from jumping into the middle of
the stream), handles the fact the TS streams never start at zero-time
and doesn't assume we want a 4:3 thumbnail (widescreen thumbnails!).
There are still a few issues with the automatically generated
thumbnails, but I'm planning to sort those next.

It works so well I can't believe I wrote it all myself! I had a Saturday
where it was recording two or three programs simultaneously for hours at
a time and it performed flawlessly. Granted, this was before I had the
conflict resolution or delayed recording pieces written, so I had to vet
the recording schedule by hand to make sure there weren't any conflicts.
That was a real brain-bender! These two start at 19:00, this one ends
at 20:30 and this one starts at 20:30...

If anyone is interested in using this, I'd be more than happy to send
along the plugin and the necessary patches to other parts of the system.
I'd say the plugin is definitely at a Release Candidate level: it works
great but I still have more plans for it. At present it only works for
recording... as I don't use the Freevo to watch live TV, I haven't
looked into that area, but it should be theoretically possible. In fact,
the HDHomerun Prime does targeted streaming, so it should be as easy as
making mplayer listen and starting a stream from the HDHomerun.

I do have plans for a page on the webserver that will allow one to
easily start and control a stream to your computer, but that's still in
the planning stages.

Of course, all that would never have been possible without all of you,
this wonderful, crazy community behind the Freevo. Dischi and Jason,
nothing but the utmost respect and heartfelt thanks for leading this
project. Thanks to you, I learned Python, finally got my head wrapped
around object-oriented programming and have a functional DVR that I can
tweak when I decide something isn't right about it. I wouldn't and
likely couldn't have done any of it without your leadership on this one.

Life changes, we all know that... and I certainly have no plans on
abandoning my Freevo. MythTV and XBMC may be slicker and more fully
featured, but Freevo is written in a language I understand and can play
with. I'll happily accept being the less-than-cool kid on the block in
exchange for that kind of freedom.

My thanks extend to _everyone_ that has been a part of this journey,
from the ones who rolled up their sleeves and dug into the guts of the
system, to

Re: [Freevo-users] The future of Freevo(.org)

2014-01-21 Thread Phil Raymond
I too will miss Freevo. Unfortunately, one of the functions version 2.0 leaves
out, is the primary reason i used Freevo. To capture HD streams out of my cable
box, using a Hauppauge HD PVR. Fortunately,I recently bought a new laptop and
installed version 1.90. As long as it continues to work, I will use it. Thanks
Dirk, for the many hours of work you put into Freevo, as well as everyone else
who contributed in some way.

 Anyway, about the server shutdown:

 still remain?

Yes. Only the SVN and the Wiki will be gone. The SVN should be no
problem, the code already is on github.

I also do see no reason to terminate the Sourceforge part of the
project. Therefore, website and mailing lists still remain. I will also
keep freevo.org registered so http://www.freevo.org will continue to
redirect to SF using a different webserver I share with friends.

Re: [Freevo-users] The future of Freevo(.org)

2014-01-20 Thread John Percival
A sad day indeed!

Quite a few years ago I tried to get Freevo running on a Fujitsu HTPC but, no
matter how I tried, I just couldn't get a signal out of the SCART socket -
something quite basic one would have thought. Loads of people on the web with
the same problem but no solution. So I shelved the project until, ironically, I
got a Smart TV with a new-fangled HDMI connection and I'm now using REL-1_9_2b2.

I did consider moving to version 2 but, quite frankly, I've invested too many
years of my life in getting Freevo working at all and, more importantly,
working the way I want it. Not only do I think it looks pretty cool (is it
still cool to say 'cool'), but so does my wife and that's saying something.

Sure I tried XBMC along the way but I don't like its look and feel. Although I
do admit to ripping some code from it to create an ITV Player (I'm in the UK)
for Freevo. Also, I created several other TV 'catch-up' players from scratch.

I can also watch my security camera via Freevo and it's integrated with my
Asterisk PBX. In fact, just this minute I've managed to get it to play my voice
messages.

As an old assembler programmer, I've taught myself some basic Python and
thoroughly enjoyed, and will continue to enjoy, working with the Freevo
infrastructure.

I suppose I'd better take some backups.

Very many thanks to all involved Freevo and best wishes for the future.

Sob. Sob.

John Percival.

I'll continue with Freevo 1.x on my tv box. It's been reliable - more
reliable than the hardware, which is now V4.
The Freevo 1.x wiki was last archived by archive.org in May
http://web.archive.org/web/20130527124511/http://doc.freevo.org/

and the 'recent changes' page says last change in Feb, so that is still
available.

Thanks Dischi, Jason, and everyone else.

Re: [Freevo-users] The future of Freevo(.org)

2014-01-20 Thread Tuomas Tonteri
Hi,

I used Freevo 1.x for years as HTPC only letting it go a year or two ago
as I didn't anymore need any multimedia center. As it worked great, I
had no reason to upgrade to anything else including Freevo 2.

Simply loved the things it could do. It could play _any_ music files,
even midi to hardware midi synthesizers, it could also play _any_
standard definition video file with great RGB picture quality to CRT TV
using matrox hardware. I don't think there is anything else out there
that can do these things.

In fact even with modern hardware it has the same strengths so for
anyone requiring some special functionality Freevo is still the way to go.

Anyway, about the server shutdown:

- Will the freevo web page (http://freevo.sourceforge.net/index.php)
still remain?

If not, I can host the web page BUT this would be on a home server that
can easily have a day or two downtime now and then and very rarely even
longer. However, the server has remained up for I guess 10 years now and
I plan on keeping it up for years to come. I can also host a version of
the wiki that is non-editable. If you don't get better offers then
please contact me Dirk and we will set it up.
