Exactly what I do, my everyday programs are in the FVWM menus and when
I want something unusual (whose name I don't know) I use the Gnome
Panel. I'll have a go with kicker and see if it does what I want,
 thank you.

So I've installed KDE's kicker and it seems to have a totally
different view of what Desktops are from FVWM's view. In fact I
*think* kicker's Desktops are FVWM's Pages, but I'm not very certain
and it sure is confusing!

Re: FVWM: If I enable Desktop Effects fvwm2 crashes

2008-05-16 Thread Jaimos Skriletz
Yes, sorry, I should have said, the 'Desktop Effects' is accessed
from gnome-panel. However I don't really see why fvwm should stop
it working. Just about every other thing that I can access from
gnome-panel works perfectly. fvwm2 is supposed to be gnome friendly.

From your logs it apears that the conflict is with FvwmPager.

You could try to disable FvwmPager for the time you need to turn on the desktop
effects.

Well, if it crashes, does it leave a core file or print any error
output? THe snippet you posted earlier is not from fvwm itself.

When I click on Enable in Desktop Effects my whole desktop just goes
pop and I get returned to the GDM login screen. Hence no error
 messages, as I'm running in init level 5 I don't think fvmw2 has a
tty to write to when it dies.

That Enable Desktop Effects button is set up to replace the
running window manager but it doesn't seem to actually start
a full window manager.

In my setup, when Fvwm stops I get a prompt
asking me what window manager I want to run.

So when I click on that button, fvwm stops running and I see
the prompt.

But there is no apparent window manager.

When I answer the prompt I have to type in fvwm2 -replace.
fvwm by itself won't work.

So, it seems that button:

kills the running window manager
Puts something in its place that isn't useful.

Fvwm is not crashing, it's just stopping as requested.

That would explain it then, however it doesn't help me sort out the
original problem that I was trying to sort out. I'm currently using
gnome-panel as the only 'extra' on my screen, I don't use fvwm's
buttons or similar. Most of what I want I access via fvwm's menus,
it's only occasionally I go into the gnome-panel menus to find
something.

Since I'm using gnome-panel I also use the gnome Workspace Switcher
which sits happily as an applet in the gnome-panel. The problem is
that there is an interaction between the Workspace Switcher and
Desktop Effects which is why I want to change the settings in Desktop
Effects.

I realise this is getting a bit far from fvwm2 now though.

Is there any equivalent of gnome-panel in fvwm2 where I could park
FvwmPager? Can I get the gnome-panel menus into the same place? The
gnome menus have the big advantage of automatically adding new
programs when you install them.

FVWM: If I enable Desktop Effects fvwm2 crashes

2008-05-15 Thread Chris G
I'm running fvwm 2.5.24 on Fedora 8.

If I go to System - Preferences - Look and Feel - Desktop Effects and
click the Enable Desktop Effects butoon it crashes my fvwm2 session.

I have attached my .xsession-errors file, I suspect the relevant bit
*may* be this:-

[FvwmPager][FlocaleGetFontSet]: (5x8) Missing font charsets:
JISX0208.1983-0, KSC5601.1987-0, GB2312.1980-0, JISX0201.1976-0, ISO10646-1
do_ypcall: clnt_call: RPC: Timed out
_XmCvtStringToXmFontList()
INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: SendRequest: Read of ack failed: 0

System error?:: Success
*** encoders
math1mono - x-mathematica1

Can anyone explain this? I only want to enable Desktop Effects
temporarily to clear an associated oddity in the Workspace Switcher
preferences.
